Thanks Lola - the problem was, I didn't even know where the correct channel of information was! I could never seem to find the right place - and schools contribution to the situation was rubbish! If they had said in the first place that I couldn't sponsor, then fine! Rant over, issue closed! Thanks to everyone for your help!!!

Lola - thanks for the link, I managed to e-chat with the GDRFV and it seems that Sourskittle, you are indeed correct!! Apparently since hubster is in UAE, I can't sponsor my son!!! Who knew...apart from sourskittle!?!?! Lola, yes I do work in a school although it only opened in Sept. There was an issue with Visas as they could only process 15 at a time (apparently standard for a new business venture!) until they hit a certain threshold. Due to the fabulous (ahem) organisation of the whole debacle, I had to visa run with my son until Feb due to my lack of residency visa as this meant there was no way of sponsoring him. Now I'm to understand (from my e-chat) that my son can only be sponsored by my husband and only if both of us have RVs! Now over to hubbie to handle this...I'm off for a bottle of grape juice!!

No valid residency as yet as we only moved in August. My visa was not completed until late Feb and then due to personal circumstances, I had to fly home during Spring break so couldn't start the process for my son. Here are some more questions then, just to clarify for my own sanity: As I have the accommodation provided by my employer, I thought it would be easier to sponsor our son. My hubbie has no documentation relating to our property as my name (or rather my employers name) is on everything. Thoughts on this please? Does anyone know of a company that will provide health insurance for a child without residency as this seems to be a requirement? Sourskittle - is it perhaps because your husband original sponsored your child that there was a problem? Not sure but it could have made the difference?! Thanks as always edited by trish82 on 05/05/2015 edited by trish82 on 05/05/2015

Son is only 3, so is he too young for a medical? I'll try and contact my PRO tomorrow for clarification. perhaps I am getting confused with the wording. As for the mother only sponsoring the son under certain circumstances, I don't think this is correct. I have looked into it and as long as I'm a teacher (check), earn over 10k AED (check) and father doesn't object (check), I'm in the clear.. Unless the guidelines have changed in the last month then I should be ok. As for the EW FAQs page, I had read it but was looking for clarification as I had conflicting information relating to some of the items required.

I've been told unequivocally that because he's not covered by my company, they will take nothing to do with my sponsorship of him - and that stretched as far as giving advice too! In saying that, a new one started a couple of weeks ago, so I might try him and see if he's any more helpful than the last one! Thanks

Thanks for the reply. I don't yet have medical for him as our medical insurance requires him to have residency - and I can't get residency without medical insurance? Is that right? I also have my employment contract/salary cert but they not attested. All the rest of my docs were attested in the UK before I left. How does that process begin here? Thanks again

Good afternoon all I'm in need of some direction when it comes to the sponsorship of my son. My husband works here also, but we decided for me to sponsor him (as I'm a bit of a control freak!). I have the following documents already: - ejari - dewa bill - salary certificate from my employer - certificate from employer to confirm my address - no objection letter from employer - passport photos for son What else do I need? What is my first move in kick-starting the process?! I'm so confused?! TIA

Thanks to both for your replies. No need to backdate - just to insure for future injuries. I'll check out Globalities - thanks for the suggestion

Not looked into it yet - thankfully school nurse will remove stitches to avoid another hefty bill from the hosp. I'll get on the travel insurance as soon as I get a breather!

Thanks Derien - that was what I thought, but I'm hoping that there are some out there who offer a service to non-residents. He's fine actually but to be honest we all found the trip to the hospital a bit of a trauma! Stitches to the face for a 2 year old - not good!! Dreading the return visit to have said stitches removed!!

I did a visa run last night and the guy in Oman said it was valid for 40 days...we queried, and he said that it was 30 days plus the grace period.

Hey Taurus Before we moved, I checked out the nurseries in Motor City and they are all termly fees I'm afraid. Why not give them a call now though since the term has started. If they have spaces, surely the would be open to negotiation...? Oh, my son is in Emirates British in Motor City, and he loves it!!!

Thanks for the replies. My company provides the best perks, hubbies company doesn't cover medical for our son or education. Mine does... should I be sponsoring him to enjoy these benefits? Thanks again T edited by trish82 on 11/08/2014

Thanks for your input. My main concern was that my name and my sons names are different and I was wondering if that would pose a problem?! Fingers crossed it will all be fine then!

I'll be leaving from Glasgow - I assume they'll be ok then?! I've read that sometimes a permission letter has to be notorised...which is the part I'm worried about as hubbie is already in Dubai!

Hi All I start my new job on 1st September, but my son doesn't start nursery until the following week. Does anyone here know teachers generally do with their children during this week? I've only just noticed that the nursery starts later (although I did suspect as much) as I just got the calendar through. Any suggestions welcome. TIA

...in Motor City. We're moving to Dubai in August and I'm looking for any recommendations as to peoples preferences. I do understand that they ARE only peoples preferences and recommendations, but I don't have my DS in nursery here in Scotland so just wondering what I should be on the lookout for. I think they are calling it GEMS Metropole Motor City or something similar. My friend went to the Gems Motor City Q&A session earlier this month. He said they indicated they will not have many Western teachers/ were looking at mainly Indian staff. Hmmm...not too sure about this. The CEO was interviewing in London 2 weeks ago - with some success. I also know quite a few western teachers who will be here from next year.

My hubbie is looking for short term accomodation - he's excellent with animals, although he will be working ft. With my job, I am provided with accom...but not until I arrive in mid August. Hubbie arrives end of May. Not sure if he's of interest...and not sure how he'd feel about me pimping him out for pet sitting duties either lol!

Thanks Tattie...we did notice that his office is right on the Metro line from Mirdif - which is why it would be a consideration. I'll check about office parking...

Hi Ladies. After my last thread on the actual cost of living, I have secured a post in Dubai for next Academic year and am moving to Dubai with my husband this summer (yay!). Now the questions start...I'll be based in Motor city, and he will be based in Deira. Where should we be looking at to live? Would Mirdif or Silicon Oasis be acceptable for us both to commute from? I'm aware of the air traffic over Mirdif as my aunt used to live there. Also, as my employer provides the accomodation, there is no guarantee of where we will actually live yet (possibly close to my school in Motor City). How would a commute be from Motor City to Deira (worst case scenario)? Would that be awful or is it something that might be possible? TIA once again

Thanks for everyones replies. We've decided that it just won't work for us just now. Had we heard at the start of the year that he was being offered the job then I would have had more time to look for employment but as but stands just now, it's a big gamble!,

Emlsnre - I looked at the list of staff at VH and I know one of them (not to well) from Cairo. Unfortunately I'm Secondary so it won't help me in this instance. My job prospects are more limited! Lolacat - I think you're right actually! The package just doesn't look that attractive as there is no relocation or education allowance which will be a huge expense in years to come and I can't count on that being in my package (I don't think) as I'll more than likely be a local hire. McB - I am applying for jobs from the UK, however when we get down to the nitty gritty of who will be accompanying me etc then I will undoubtedly have to mention my husband - which will probably affect the benefits that are offered to me in my package as (from what I gather) these are assumed to be provided under the husbands contract. Perhaps I'm wrong? Thanks admin - I applied for a couple of posts off the jobs page! Thanks again for all your advice!

I don't mean to be nasty, it's a genuine question you have to ask yourself. I didn't take your comment as nasty - it's a genuine question! I fully intend to work, however at this point (and his contract was only offered last week), i feel like I may have missed the boat with much of the recruitment. It was never our intention to live off one wage, however my experience of being in the middle east tells me that there is a potential that I might pick up a teaching job at some point as there are no-shows and re-advertisements for a number of reasons. I know there is absolutely no reason why we can't survive on 2 wages, but am genuinely asking if we could do it short term on only one wage. My husbands job are providing medical and flights, so I know that is one less expense. I'm not penny pinching as such, I just don't want to move out there, realise we've made a terrible decision, struggle financially and live to regret it. Also, I HATE shopping! One of the reasons my hubbie and I get along so well! I'm well aware of the brats - I taught in a lovely (high profile) school in Cairo so I'm well versed in how difficult children can be from well off backgrounds. I'm no stranger to hard work. The reason we want to move is because I gave up my job in Cairo when I met my husband (who lived back in the UK), and although I've never regretted coming home, I have never really been satisfied with being back in the UK...I have very itchy feet!!

I seem to remember having a very early Burns supper (just after my return to Egypt after Christmas) when I was abroad...and I brought the haggis, a friend brought the neeps and another brought the whiskey from Scotland! Can't celebrate without the trimmings! Again, thanks for your replies. I have many more questions...but will need to put them in an orderly manner before I put them to you. I must admit, you've put my mind at rest slightly regarding the affordability aspect of it. To answer the question about bills back home...The bills we have are reasonably small and once our home is rented out, we will no longer have these bills as the rent will (hopefully) cover these. Also, if I get a job in Dubai - and my fingers are firmly crossed - then these small bills won't be of any significance as they will be paid off shortly anyway. Thanks for your replies. Unfortunately, it has bred more questions... Is it standard for the husbands perks to include education allowance. I'm a teacher but haven't been applying for jobs (stupidly!) as the delay in my husbands contract was such that we weren't really sure how long it would take to materialise (I've worked in the middle east before so aware of the lack of regard for time!!). I know I would be a local hire if I was to secure employment in Dubai, but does that mean I lose ALL perks eg If my husband is employed, it is assumed that his package would cover our medical/housing/return flights etc, but would my employer cover the education aspect - or do I lose that too? I would only be looking for a maid if I got a job, not in the interim. I know that apartments are expensive, so we do have a bit put aside for the first 3 months rent (if we found a place that would take 4 cheques) and we would probably be looking at a cheaper location until we got on our feet. We're hoping this will be a long-term move. We also have enough to cover our bills back home in the interim. Thanks
