Hello, I'm 8 weeks pregnant and my husband's company health insurance does not cover maternity at all! I've called a few insurance company (Daman and ADNEC) and it takes 10 months for the policy to kick in. I cant do a hospital package either as my obstetrician is independent. She does deliveries at City Hospital but does not go under the hospital package. Do you know of any insurance which will take me on pregnant already? I don't mind paying a premium, I would just feel safer knowing that if there are any complications, I'm covered by an insurance. Thanks for your help! ADNIC will cover you. when i spoke to them they said you had to be an AUH resident....have an AUH visa...then they changed completely and said they didn't do it any more. really? what a shame. my friend did it early in the year and she is Dubai based. It's not fair how they can just chop and change things as they please

Frazzled right around the time when DS turned 3, it may have been a few months before, he started doing this weird prolonged blink thing. It was totally weird and freaked us out. Apparently at this age there is so much going on in brain development and it's kind of an overload response. He stopped it on his own after a few weeks. How old is your LO? try and film what he/she is doing so you can show your Dr in case your LO doesn't do it when you take them (this happened to me!). Hopefully it is something similar to my experience. All of the experts will tell you to ignore it and not mention it to the child. We did this and I think it is definitely the way to go.

I think it depends on her mothers situation. Will she be alone when her daughter is not with her, or does she also have another family? No she doesnt, which we are sympathetic towards and has played a large part in our desicions to date. However is that reason enough for us to miss out on every xmas morning? yes it is. I suppose you have every right in the world to resist her mother's request, but it would be so sad for her to be alone on Christmas morning. You and your husband are in a completely different situation to her. Let her have her daughter on Christmas morning.

My DS was born early at the very end of August. He is due to start FS2 at a BC school in 2015, however my husband and I have decided that we would like to hold him back a year so he starts FS2 in 2016 instead. The school is fine with this, however the nursery have said that he can only stay there for one more year. Has anyone managed to hold their child back for one year, and if so how did you go about doing it? I would really appreciate your thoughts. TIA Yes, that is a great idea and especially beneficial with boys in my opinion. I have done this with my DS who is also a summer baby. Not every school is fine with it but I am glad that the one you have chosen is. There are plenty of excellent nurseries that will allow him to stay on. I had my DS at Little Land which is excellent.

yes, keep her in Nursery. Don't try putting her in to "big" school ahead of her time, the older girls in her year will eat her up!

I was wondering if anyone has successfully transferred their child from one school to another in Dubai [u'>after[/u'> the November 15th cutoff date? if your child is not in school already, I believe it doesn't matter. However if your child is already in a school, I don't think the KHDA will allow any switch after 15th Nov. That's what they (KHDA) told me anyway.

It is strange because staff at the KHDA have openly admitted to me recently that there are not enough FS1, FS2 and Grade 1 spots for the number of children. This is going to create a massive headache for the KHDA.... I reckon they will have to back down on this one. I am sure they didn't anticipate the school having to close down (even though I am sure the Principal made this clear to the KHDA, they probably thought the school was bluffing)

Hi all... sorry for the delay in replying but I wanted to ensure that I got all my facts right before posting on here... I had a discussion with the Head of Transition at Horizon and she verified that [b'>ALL[/b'>[u'>[/u'> yr6 students last year got places into secondary schools. I also approached six of the parents who had children in yr 6 and they have all confirmed that their children and all their classmates got places in secondary schools. Glad to hear that everyone eventually got a place, but that doesn't necessarily mean that they got places in the best schools, nor the one's that they wanted. I am sure that everyone managed to get a place in some school or other. HorizonMum2, I know Horizon is an awesome school and personally I don't care too much about academics, rather I want my children to be confident, kind work as a team, have a strong sense of community etc (all of the things that Horizon promotes) but surely you have to see that it is not on par with the top schools where academics is concerned. It also concerns me a bit that they have this "no homework" policy however some parents are doing extensive homework with their kids while others doing nothing because they don't even realize they need to. It seems that they leave a lot of it up to the parents? I don't know, maybe I am wrong, it is just what I am hearing a lot. edited by Tru Blu on 14/11/2013 edited by Tru Blu on 14/11/2013

Tru Blu Very curious indeed! I know there were two children that waited until very late but were placed in the end. There were some that didn't get the school of there choice but did get places. Also there were some that left the country but that wasn't due to school placements. I agree if you want a [i'>very academic based school[/i'> Horizon isn't the place to be. If you want a great community, that nurtures your child to be a positive part of society then yes this is a great choice. Best of luck to the OP and anyone searching for the right school. edited by Rickadon on 11/11/2013 yes, am thinking perhaps they found places after I had heard that kids didn't get places or something? anyway, main thing is that they did find places in the end :-)

Tru Blu I am not sure where you got your information from or who you have spoken to but I am a mom of one of the children from year 6 last year. All of the children secured places in the end. Yes some had to wait longer but that more to do with the awful way places are granted here in Dubai then just Horizon. There were 4 or 5 that secured places at Dubai College last year, about the same that do every year on average. At the end of the day Dubai College isn't for everyone. BarshaLady 1 No Horizon is not a HIGHLY academic school but those who have chosen this school have done so partially because of this. If you want your child pushed academically then this isn't the school for him/her. If you want your child to expand on what they are learning at home, to be kind, responsible positive contributors to society then yes this is a school for your and your child. As I have said before picking a school for your child is a very personal decision, one you have to make for reasons that suit you, your child and your family. Every school as it's challenges/issues you just have to be able to make them work best of your family. My oldest has moved onto Secondary and is blooming! Goodluck edited by Rickadon on 11/11/2013 One of my friends and also one of my children's teachers at Nursery who had children in year 6 last year gave me the information. I trust them both wholeheartedly. Anyway, as I have said on this thread and previous threads, I really like the sound of Horizon and think that it has most things right, however to answer the OP's question, the answer would have to be that Horizon is not on par with other similar private schools when it comes to academics.

My first son was born after 24 hours in labour & then a C section. I was 18 yrs old & had a very healthy pregnancy apart from the fact that my sons head never engaged. He had been turned but refused to stay in the correct position. I was in hospital throughout the labour. But my son went into fetal distress & the nurses were reluctant to call the surgeon at an unsociable hour. By the time the C section was started my son was already fairly distressed, when he was born he didn't breath for 11 minutes. He eventually died 10 days later from the traumatic birth & pre birth conditions. I also felt it must have been my fault. My sisters could almost deliver a baby while washing up . SO it must be me ?? All I can say to you is thank God you are both safe & well. Im not trying to diminish your feelings. Please know as a mother whatever we do for our children its almost never enough. God bless you & congratulations . Sorry for your loss, even though years have probably passed, this would be so hard and painful to go through. {{{HUGS}}} Neamhai, I ended up having an emergency C-section with my first, then my second baby was breach and my 3rd pregnancy was twins so 3 C-sections for me!!!! At the moment you are still very hormonal and probably sleep deprived. go easy on yourself, there are so many other things in life to beat yourself up about. Try to focus on the fact that you go this beautiful healthy little girl into this world safely and you did what you had to do. TDB, I can't believe that you were induced like that for the convenience of the Dr. How awful and stressful for your body! and your wee one. They do that kind of thing a lot in DXB from what I gather.

I believe that a few year 6 students did not secure places at Dubai's high schools this year which is a bit of a worry. I am not sure this is correct, as at least a few gained places at Dubai College. I would echo Horizon Mum's views regarding the positives of the school. Negatives regarding website/communication have improved since the installation of the communicator system. It is correct. Go and do your homework if you have doubts. The school should really tell you if you ask them straight up. I actually wish it wasn't true, but it is. I am sure that a few gained places at DC but the number that applied was far greater than a few I bet. edited by Tru Blu on 10/11/2013 edited by Tru Blu on 10/11/2013 edited by Tru Blu on 10/11/2013

I moved my trouble from Horizon to another school and realised how low the academic standard was at Horizon across 4 year groups. Wouldn't recommend it on the academic front. There are other schools that focus on the whole child, sports and not at the expense of academic standards. I am also interested in this thread. I have long been keen on Horizon as it has quite an alternative approach and is sporty etc... however I have heard a number of things over the last 6 months or so. I believe that a few year 6 students did not secure places at Dubai's high schools this year which is a bit of a worry. As a result I think they have decided to up their game a bit and will be putting more emphasis on academics, the really have to.

I am a former IB student from 2009 (graduated from university in the UK and now working). I would not recommend IB as it is too much pressure/stress for 16-18 year olds, which is quiet unnecessary, unless education is extremely easy for your child and they plan to go to Harvard, Oxford or Cambridge. If your kids are looking to go to university in the UK it is far better to do the A levels as it is easier to get very high marks in. For a comparison the IB has 6 subjects and A levels only 3 that count, while the IB grading system is not evaluated correctly on UCAS and universities, as in universities in the UK require a much higher grade in IB then they do in A levels, which are not even close to being equal, therefore puts IB students at a disadvantage for UK universities. interesting insight. thanks for your post.

Sorry ding I can't help you with that question. My husband's company has taken care of most of it but most certainly we only have a contract between us and the Maid. There is no agency. Perhaps the majority of people sponsoring in Ajman use an agency, in fact, I am sure that they do. They would be mostly local and girls who come to the UAE to look for work themselves would only be interested in Dubai or AD. Good luck with it!!!!

Ding we have just been through this. My husband is on a Sharjah SAIF zone visa and the same rules apply. Where is your Maid from? Luckily our Maid is from Sri Lanka and [b'>we were able to say [/b'> that her salary was a mere 500 a month and therefore the cost of sponsoring her was only 6000 (we pay her more than this of course). If your Maid is from the Philippines then I think the minimum salary is 1400, which makes it not so feasible. I believe that many families sponsored on Ajman and Sharjah visas end up using Agencies like Howdra and Explorer here in DXB for their full time Maids.

Really Trublu? Amazon flat out says it can't ship cod live oil capsules here! In fact it says that for everything except books and dvds. May I ask what was the worth of your order please? I know for sure that clothing/lingerie from UK has a limit of 1000AED and over that amount, you have to pay customs. Ahhh, okay. I use shop and ship so technically they are only posting it within the US.

Perhaps you could look at the new Widad Learning Centre in Jumeirah? It only has 100 pupils and caters well for children on the spectrum as well as those that are not. It would be so good for your 8 year old daughter. Your other kids could also go there, but as you said you would prefer them to follow the National Curriculum maybe you could put them at another school located in Umm Suqeim or Jumeirah.

Put in more applications than just there though, as Horuzon does have a great rep and a long waiting list to attest it. they are due to expand within the next 12 months so waitlists shouldn't be a massive problem like right now. I really like the sound of Horizon school itself but dealing with the enrolment/waitlist process has been so awful that I have been quite turned off the school. edited by Tru Blu on 15/10/2013

same thing happened to m with Horizon school. Passed and waitlisted and nothing happened after. Thank God I had other alternatives. And the part that bothered me most was that they had no particular order of going through the waitlist. (At least I asked, and was told there is no particular order.) Also no follow up notices at all. I know, its been really disappointing and stressful to say the least. No communication whatsoever (other than me trying to make contact). They really need to review their system. I didn't have a plan b which was quite silly of me I know. Anyway, onwards and upwards, I have been in contact with DESS and Star over the last few days, and other than being much nicer to deal with, they may actually try and help me :-)

Interesting OZ. Why wont the KHDA allow it to be called a school? is it primarily for children with learning difficulties? or does it just cater for them? as far as I know, my four kids don't/wont need additional assistance.

It might be genuine. Many landlords are defaulting on their loans. Maybe he just needed a signature to drop of the papers and that's it. Why are your husbands employers saying its a scam? They rang the bank and the landlord and neither knew anything about it! It's probably the debt collection department of the bank oh okay, just read this. Maybe he wants to see what your signature looks like? No one ever cares or checks in this country, but in other countries an exact signature match is a must!
