Our family is as Western as they come and I find this utterly disrespectful. Us expats (Western expats) have it pretty good out here and a bunch of a few egocentric and disrespectful people will spoil it for the rest of us. The rules are the rules, we live in a Muslim country and whoever does not like it should not have chosen to come here and live. It is not Saudi Arabia and we like it just the way it is, so please let's just keep it reasonable. If you want to do top baring and thong wearing on beaches, go where it is acceptable. A couple of days ago I was at the check out of a supermarket where admittedly it's mainly Western expat clientele with the odd local or other Arab nationality but on this particular day (lunchtime) there were 5 Muslim women (all were there separately, but all with heads covered). This lady in front of me (won't mention nationality but she was in her 30's) was wearing shorts so short you could see what she had had for breakfast, and the top was made of net fabric with holes the size of a cherry and the bit that was covered, as thick as a thread of yarn. Underneath it a black bra (not even a swimming costume) ... The Muslim women all stared at her in disbelief and I (dressed in what I thought was normal casual wear for this country but next to her feeling ultra conservative) just felt so embarrassed for this grown up woman who was (and boyfriend/husband too) completely oblivious to the people around her.

We used them recently and they were brilliant. We called in the morning, thinking they would be taking a day or two to come and collect, but they came that same evening.

We are moving within Dubai soon and husband has decided that the current Du package we have 'Talk Surf & Watch' + Orbit showtime is not worth the money as they always repeat the programmes and the movies are also on repeat forever. So this may be a good time to switch to something different. Does anyone have any good recommendations? We recently bought Apple TV but still seems so unfamiliar and I would hate to feel that I don't have access to the main news channels (we don't really watch them daily but its nice to have them there if we decide to have a look at whats going on in the world). Thank you Ladies xx

Thank you Daza but I have decided not to bake it as I will be making the savoury for both adults and kids, so decided to get help for the cake. Hence the reason for not wanting to order more than necessary - to be honest fondant-covered cake is nice on the day of the birthday party but afterwards it just seems too rich. Sivstet, so if there are 20 kids you would order a 2-kg cake to feed the accompanying adults too?

Please let me know once you have seen this so that I can delete the address :) Happy Easter! edited by twin_butterfly on 06/04/2015

Thank you Apricot!!! Wow, you sound like you have been doing this for quite some time so I might need to come back with some more questions ;) Unfortunately all I have is a non-electric mixer, so I might have to wait until my birthday or Christmas for that KitchenAid/Kenwood. Could I ask why you recommend the Kenwood vs the KitchenAid?

Avoid in the veining if you can, or another option would be to park at Marina Mall and take the RTA boat across to Promenade, or just walk across the bridge. Sooo much nicer!

All Salt Peter does is to give it the meat its red/pink colour. Just use regular sea salt if you don't mind the meat-y colour - it does exactly the same minus the pink colour. Also Salt Peter can be toxic if you are not very careful with the measuring. There are a few other urban legends out there but I will let you google it instead of posting it on here ...

I had serious doubts about vaccinating my first and actually delayed the whole process by months. I read a book by a Swiss doctors that lists every single vaccine for children and how this could affect the child (with examples of patients she knew had reacted badly to the vaccines) and also making mention of the less 'dangerous' ones. Also, just google 'should we vaccinate our children' and you will find lots of website posts against vaccination. We ended up going just with the ones that are absolutely essential (where the infection could be life-threatening or create a life-long disability) and to be quite frank we did it because to get your child into nursery/school you will need to present the medical book confirming that your child is immunised. Having said that, one of my besties didn't immunise her daughter who is now attending one of the most sought-after schools in Dubai. Def a controversial topic but I think you should do what you think is right for you and your family. edited by twin_butterfly on 06/01/2015

Ahh, thank you Missy Moo! But shame … I just found out that what I wanted is on the 'not allowed' list (glass) :( :( :( Might just have to be through friends travelling in that direction but I hate asking for this as I realise how much families already have to lug around … Oh well ...

Fully sympathise. My first was also born at 35 weeks and spent the first days of his precious little life in NICU so I can understand how stressed you are - I had no clue of how to care for a newborn, let alone a premie! Mine did not feed easily at the beginning either - no breast (wouldn't latch), little bottle. They grow their appetite and skill at bottle drinking slowly. I would say relax, give it a few days and keep an eye on her weight gain weekly. Why don't you talk to the nurses and doctor before leaving? I know how daunting it is but you will see how things fall into place slowly and a lot of it comes from instinct although you may not think it possible at this stage. Best of luck and do let us know how things come along. But for now enjoy bringing bub home - I also know how special it feels to finally being able to bring a NICU baby home. Our first evening at home was just magical! Don't forget to take the photos as you will really treasure these later on. Big hugs to you! edited by twin_butterfly on 09/10/2014

Newby, a few people I know quite swear by Cecile de Scally who has a Facebook page and also an official Facebook page for her business (sorry can't remember the name). I can't give you first hand feedback as I haven't needed post natal support (up to now, fingers crossed!). But have met her socially and she is a lovely South African lady who came across as the no-nonsense type of person. She is well respected in the UAE and I think she said she has been here for 10+ years doing the same thing. Otherwise, put a post out on the Pregnancy, Babies and Toddlers forum on here and there is also a lady who does BF support and I quite active on there. All the best xx edited by twin_butterfly on 06/07/2014

Well, that explains the odd signature :) As for Spam, you can block the Spamer by sending the following to 7726: b (space) name of the sender in the exact same fashion, so use capitals etc. got the tip from etisalat yesterday as also quite fed up with the repeated Spam from all sorts of companies I never heard about.

My hands seem to have aged much faster over the past six months than ever before. Can any of you recommend a very good cream for hands that won't cost thousands of dirhams and won't be too greasy either? Many thanks xx

Original recipe is just potato (parboiled, then panfried) and egg but sometimes you might find them with caramelised onions too. If you want a bit of an extra something, I normally add tiny bits of bacon - but this would not be the veg option the OP is looking for :)

Agree - they charge rather a lot. The standard seems to be AED 750 for 1 hour and when you ask them in detail what the actual activities are, they seem to struggle going into detail but to be frank if I pay AED 750 I want to know what I am going to get for it. There are some that charge more but then you also get a Western native English speaker as your entertainer and they have themed and cuter activities, as opposed to the one-fits-all programme. One company that seems to have similar charges to Party Citi is Party Universe, but I am less than impressed with them as they called me after having booked with them to say their entertainer (they actually have 2) was not available. Agree that I did not book an entire or super expensive package as I am doing the party styling myself, but it is not right to confirm a booking with a client and then cancel it if you get a more attractive piece of business - I have to add that I had also ordered tables and chairs, and a whole lot of helium filled and foil balloons with them.

Thank you thank you thank you! You are amazing, ladies! CitronKB, which Daiso did you go to? I have called Ibn Batuta and Barsha, and they claim they don't have them. Failing that I will try Party Centre - they have opened a new shop in Media City :) Thank you so very much for offering the cutter!!! I would love to! The entertainer I had booked for DS' birthday party next week has called saying they had previously been booked and cannot make it to our party :( Can anyone recommend party entertainers? We have everything else sorted, so just need an entertainer that can keep kids of ages 2 to 4 busy with dance, games and competitions for an hour. Many thanks in advance.
