Did this 2 years ago for the first Eid. Sunglasses, hats for the kiddies, very comfortable (closed) shoes for all to do the sites, and shorts are perfectly fine. Oh, and a good camera (and tripod if you have it) with an extra card - I think I took over 600 pics!

DC, good to see everything has stabilised. I had the same thing: was admitted on my 32nd week with early contractions and after an overnight observation was told to go home and be a good girl Although I had to go back on my 35th week for the real thing ... Hang in there ... only a few more weeks to go! If you would like me to scan the few pages of the book with the Scottish boy names and send them across to you, happy to do so. Sometimes having a list where you can cross options off helps - I am a 'lists person' so that is how I operate; if I had to rely on my memory ... I'd probably be living in a tent in the middle of the desert

:) DS also has a Buddy Snuggle which is the same square velvety cloth with a teddy head + arms in the middle which he does hold once he has fallen asleep but so far has not helped him go to sleep. Having a bit of a problem with night sleeps right now but will create a new thread and hopefully someone who has been in the same situation will have suggestions on how to handle. Thanks though, it seems like the cot soothers effectivity depend on the baby and knowing mine ... no chance :)

They are in different places. When you go in to register yourself for a box they should give you a map which shows. When you drive towards AD on SZR, take the exit after the last one for Marina/JBR and drive straight at the traffic light by Ibn Battuta. Discovery Gardens are on your left - not so easy to navigate through but it is organised in clusters so use that to find the location of your PO Box. Just beware, it took us a good 3-4 months to receive any mail!!! We kept on complaining to Emirates Post as the banks, etisalat etc claimed our letters were being sent, but sadly EP were not interested in hearing us. We now receive most of our post - not sure where the rest lands which is not too reassuring considering there are bank and credit card statements supposedly lost somewhere in EP.

Was in the middle of typing my message when you did yours. Just checked Lachlan which I missed but I also love it. It says: Derived from the Gaelic 'laochail' (war-like), which is from the root 'laoch' (war, strife). Alternatively, it may be from the Irish Lochlainn (Lakeland, Fiordland), a name that originated from the name the Irish used for the native home of the Norse invaders. Variations: Lachann, Lachlann. Pet: Lachie

Do you have any news for us DC? Scottish names seem to be the trend at the moment so I have pulled out the baby names book we bought before DS was born. There are the most beautiful Scottish boy names but spelling could be a bit of a headache for the LO. Here are a few that I like: Alasdair (defender of mankind), Benneit (blessed), Calum (dove), Darach (dark oak), Eachann (brown horse), Eoghan/Evan/Ewan (youth), Glenn (valley), Iagan (little fire), Iomhair/Imhear/Iomhar (archer) – this name is the Scottish variation of the Scandinavian Ivar, Kester (Scottish variation of Christopher), Kieran (little dark one), Magnus (great), Neacal (Gaelic form of Nicholas), Ranulf (shield wolf), Ruiseart (Gaelic form of Richard), Tearlach (Gaelic form of Charles), Uilleam (Gaelic form of William).

Some friends of ours moved to DXB from the UK recently and had they gone through the trouble of making lists of books etc I would have heard about it. They used Allied Pickfords - you might want to give them a call and see what they say.

I just used one that DH bought at the Home Centre (I think) to put in between my knees. It is a small rectangular pillow with 2 convergent C's that I propped against my knees when I went to sleep as my knees are quite bony and they always rubbed against eachother at night. Problem is that I lost it every single night. Other than that I also had a V shaped pillow I bought at Mothercare to support my bump in bed. Again, I never seemed to be able to keep it - in the mornings (or whenever I woke up during the night) it would just appear on the floor or on DH :)

hmmm ... the lollipop ... I have been waiting for this one to come up for some time ... FB and its millionaire boys have no ethics when it comes to privacy restrictions (that is why I have no private info on FB other than my name and location. But this one (lollipop) is a new one! I have not posted pics on FB for about 2 years now. Family and close friends ask me for pics of my 6-month old DS but instead of posting them on FB I send them a private e-mail with the pictures. Any wall posts related to DS are always replied to with a private message. I am sure some of my friends on FB who live abroad are starting to think whether me having a baby is all in my mind and he doesn't really exist ... lol Back to this topic: I wash and disinfect literally anything DS touches. If a clean nappy falls on the (disinfected with Dettol) floor, I do not use it but just throw away. If toys falls on the floor, they are put away immediately until I find the time to wash in the machine and wipe with Dettol wipes. My hands are raw in between the fingers from washing them dozens of times a day, and anything in sight. Friends, hubby, MIL already tried to explain bub needs to build his own immune system but that does not help. I am the queen of paranoia when it comes to bacteria and germs.

I found diet A&W Rootbeer once at Choithrams in Bur Dubai. I'm glad I bought 8 cans, because when I went back it was all gone, and my inquiries were met with blank stares-- sigh Aleta, I have noticed it at the Choithram's at Amwaj in JBR this week so I am sure if you check other branches they may have it too.

I like Waitrose breads too! Otherwise why don't you try and bake your own? I started a few months ago after I took the dust off the bread maker hubby had in the storage room from his single days. So easy! Just throw all the ingredients in and choose the programme for the type of bread I want (wholemeal, with seeds, etc) and 2-3 hrs later ... voila! You can also leave in to bake overnight as at the end of each bake the machine turns itself off.

Soft and breathable are best - I think these days most should be anyhow. I buy Air Optix which come in sets of 6 and each lasts about a month (longer if you look after them). You can find them in most optical shops. I get mine at Vision Express in Dubai Marina Mall but they also have a shop in Ibn Battuta and a few other malls.

I am currently reading Bill Bryson's At Home - AN EXCELLENT BOOK! It tells the history of families and homes. In example why are homes built as they are? Why do we have a kitchen and separate living room / bedroom? Why do we use salt and pepper and not example cinnamon and chilli? Why do buildings look like they look etc. Answers to endless questions about human history. I read this over the summer and loved it! Tonnes of trivia and interesting historical facts. Mr Bryson rarely disappoints does he? I'm reading The Poisonwood Bible at the moment. It's been on my list to read for a long time and so far so good.... LOVE Bill Bryson - will make sure I get a copy of this on my next trip to the mall! Also a (reasonably) new mum and will be hard to find the time but will have it on hand when the occasion arises :)

Unless the bathtub is attached to the table I would have it on the floor and you can sit next to him/her. Our DS was a premie so we bathed him in the washbasin for the first few weeks, after which we started using a baby tub we had bought at either Mothercare or Babyshop (sorry can't remember) that has the reclining seat built in so that I do not have to hold his head up during the bath. I simply have it inside the regular bathtub as he has started to splash about a lot, and I sit on the edge of it. He is now almost outgrowing it so looking at getting him one of the mats with a back support that you just sit in the regular bathtub (I think Mothercare stocks them).

The Atlantis dolphins were caught in the wild in the Solomon Islands. If you pay to go and see them/swim with them you are condoning capturing a wild dolphin and putting it in a swimming pool to live out its life. No need to go as far as Oz to see wild dolphins. See them playing alongside your dhow in Musandam. It's such a thrill, pleasure and privilege to have these fantastic wild creatures *choose* to come swim beside your boat :) True, have seen them happily jumping in Musandam too! Although some years ago and my memory starts to fail ;)

Happy ending on this one - after holiday to visit family and hubby realising DS' cousins are not circumcised, we have put the subject to rest and my little darling came back intact :) This was never a religious matter for us; rather hubby's opinion for that DS should have it done because he'd had it done some 40 years ago when this was routine procedure on all newborns for 'hygiene' reasons. KS, good to know about having to watch doctors here with the uncircumcised ... I saw the paed doing it on his first visit (he is no longer his paed for other reasons) so hope he did not damage anything! Something I will ask his current paed to check. Thanks also to the ladies who shared their experiences on the hows etc.

We had the same challenge with names that both hubby's and my family found easy to pronounce. When we still did not know if it was gonna be boy or girl, we chose Monica for girl - it's easy to pronounce in most languages. I also love Chloe but chances are high that she (if a she) might spend her entire life spelling it out for people.

I have used Xclusive Boats Charter who are based at the Dubai Marina Yacht Club http://xclusiveyachts.com and would be excellent for a birthday party. Was very happy with the crew. They can organise catering for you although we brought another company who provided us just with a chef and we used the charter company for the food service. Just beware that their staff are not really trained for a high level event so do not expect a 5 star level of food service. You can BYO booze and the boat is already loaded with ice, water and soft drinks. We just sailed along the coast of Jumeirah so not sure if they would go all the way to Mussandam - you may need to look at suppliers up in Mussandam itself.

I wanted to do this experience a few months ago but hubby convinced me to wait and see them in their real environment. Just came back from a holiday in Oz where took a boat trip to see dolphins and humpback whales off the coast of Queensland. We viewed a couple of dozen whales and half a dozen dophins really close up (they came so close that ended up diving under our boat a few times) and it was such a beautiful sight I had tears down my cheeks! I would most definitely recommend waiting for the right time if you travel anywhere where you can see the real thing rather than paying more to see them in captivity - it is well worth it!

I will pass on the writing etc but wil not be going back, would rather walk the extra 2-3 minutes to the Choithram's around the corner. Not that we do our weekly shopping there (C4) but we still spend AED 100-200 a week on snacks, dairy, bread and the odd fruit/veg. So at the end, their loss not mine. This does not make it less of a scam, and this is really the reaction they are hoping for (especially when it comes to Western expats): why should I bother for the just AED 1-2? Anyhow, onto more important and better things now: off to pack for my holiday with my gorgeous family :)

Later on, DH fancied ice cream after dinner so I went downstairs but instead of going to the usual shop (A _ M _ Y _) I decided to walk an extra couple of minutes to the Choithram's at Amwaj. On the way back I stopped at A _ M _ Y _ to let them know they had an upset client (they know me as we have been customers ever since they opened a couple of years ago). The supervisor had the courage to look me in the eye and say they 'forgot' to update their system with the promotion. Well, how come they don't 'forget' to increase prices? The 'mistakes' these establishments make seem to mysteriously always happen in their favour, never that of the customer's. I mentioned to him that they had not 'forgotten' as they had reduced the price of the 6 pack by AED 0.50 which was only a third of the cost of one bottle. After a brief silence, he asked me to come back in the morning to speak to the morning supervisor ... Debating whether I should write to Coca-Cola and let them know that A _ M _ Y _ Supermarkets are not passing on their promotion to the end consumer. After all, Arwa/Coca-Cola are giving up part of their profits to run this promotion! edited by twin_butterfly on 14/09/2011
