I had a natural delivery, no epidural, vacuum assisted birth in American Hospital and the only extra charge (for the vacuum) was about 600Dhs. The total bill was around 12000. I expect City would be about the same. We brought our own diapers, wipes, maternity pads etc. because I knew we'd be charged for those if we used hospital ones. Hi ChuckyDucky, Yes, I called City today and they explained to me whats charged and whats not. And that if I told them when I checked in that I wasn't interested in anything not covered by my package then there wouldn't be any extra charges. So far I've covered all of the basics except for medication which i'm not necessarily against paying for, i would just like to be informed first that this is not covered by your package so you will be paying blank extra so that I can at least make a choice.

I must say the 25,000 sounds a lot with no pain relief and a natural delivery. (Austan) Mine was that and I had a C section with epidural at City and stayed 3 nights. UmmZarinah best thing to do is buy a package, or go and ask them for a price list. I would also be prepared to pay a lot more than expected - I was covered for 10,000aed by insurance but had to supplement the additional myself. Ensure you have a credit card with a huge limit or the cash to pay for at least 50,000aed extra. Any NICU costs will send the bill way over this. If you are concerned about cost, register with Latifa. TDB, what are the delivery costs at Latifa? I had to go there for emergency care and liked their ER over City's ER care but when I looked at their packages the antenatal is only 500 AED less than at City. Are the delivery costs different??

I didn't like her. After being kept waiting over an hour to be seen despite arriving on time for the appointment, she spent the first few mins of the appt on the phone to another patient while I was lying on the bed with my clothes up/down waiting to be scanned. While she was on the phone she picked at all her nails and pulled them off and collected them on the table and then threw them away. I don't know if that's uncharacteristic as I did go to her based on everyone's feedback...I could have dealt with the lateness and even the talking on the phone...but the nails thing has put me right off. I'm now on Dr Elsa's waiting list. :( I was with Dr. Anne from week 16 to about week 33 of my pregnancy and I'm very surprised at your experience. She never kept me waiting and I would assume that if you had to wait that long then perhaps there was an emergency with one of her other patients. She seems to try to be available for all of her patients as I called her once and although she answered, she informed me that she was currently with a patient and asked me to please sms her. The nail thing is simply bizaar. You mean to say she clipped her nails sitting there or peeled off fake ones?? Perhaps a previous client complained about her nails or....they got caught on something/?? While it is really strange I think I'd be grateful that she cut her nails (assuming she washed her hands afterward). Dirt sits and grows under even the cleanest of nails. I think you should give Dr. Anne another chance. The only issue I had with her is that she did not feel pro VBAC enough for me and I found that she said odd things at times that made me feel less comfortable.

Dr. Azizunisa is the name of the ob at City who is head of the department. You should also search this forum for City Hospital and you will find loads of recommendations for many of the obs at City. If you're considering other hospitals as well simply search the forum for the hospital name and you will find many relevant threads with recommendations from most of the top private hospitals as well as the government hospitals (which are also top hospitals btw). Good luck again

Hello Kat, congrats on your pregnancy :-). Many of the obs at City are highly recommended. I was initially with Dr. Anne Philip who was good and am now with Dr. Elsa who has super high ratings from many of her patients. The waiting list for both doctors is currently very long though (Dr. Elsa's being the longest). I suggest just calling and making an appointment with the ob who is available the soonest and get on Dr. Elsa's waiting list. I was in the same boat as you (not scheduling an appt until I was 11-12 weeks) and I started with Dr. Anne and didn't get an appointment with Dr. Elsa until I was 34 weeks! There is also another ob there, I forget her name but she's the head of the department there and I've heard some great reviews about her as well. Regarding your headaches, I too had headaches at the beginning of my pregnancy and the doctor prescribed Magnesium. I also have a couple of other pregnant friends who've also had headaches and their doctors have prescribed magnesium as well. Its also good for leg cramps so I would suggest taking that along with your prenatal vitamins and you may find the headaches will simply go away. Mine went away on their own as my pregnancy progressed and I only take the Magnesium if I have a leg cramp now. Good luck, and do let us know how everything goes.

. However, for your son to have such full nappies at a young age might mean he is drinking too much at night - is he getting formula? I agree with Quinn. If he's fine during the day with Pampers he should be fine during the night as well. At 1year he's sleeping through the night and not waking up to eat/drink so perhaps minimizing his fluid intake before bedtime would help???

I had my baby at city 2 years ago with no maternity coverage. I had a straight forward delivery with no pain relief. They had a policy that all must stay 2 nights and no this wasn't my first baby but 3rd. On checkout our bill was roughly 25,000dh which was the delivery charge included in this. I'm due to have my 4th in September and so pleased we have maternity cover this time around! All the best with your birth Thank you Austan for your reply. The delivery package at City is supposed to include the following: Delivery Fees Labour ward care Hospital stay for 2 days Obstetrician's professional fee consumables used during the delivery pediatrician's consultation hospital diet Rounding fees - Specialist Obstetrician I assume that those are all the major costs involved but I do not expect in any way to walk out of there only having paid the 12,500. I'm just trying to see what other additional costs can be....racked up without you even realizing it. I know any additional labwork or medicatons wouldn't be covered. Not sure about neonatal baby care, etc. I also think there's a time limit on the labour ward care, like after a certain number of hours they begin billing you....I really would like to be as clear as possible on all of this beforehand as this pregnancy was totally unplanned and I DO NOT like being surprised when it comes to money (something that seems inevitable here).

Must arrange a coffee morning for us all. See you all soon, and happy incubating - lol I hear coffee mornings so often, do people really mean get together and drink coffee? I mean I've snuck probably 3 iced coffees this pregnancy but the last one affected me so much that I haven't touched a coffee. Before I was pregnant it didn't affect me at all, could drink a cup and go straight to bed but I was so jittery the last time it made me feel extremely uncomfortable and uneasy.

So I had my first appointment with Dr. Elsa today and I loved her! She was so in tune with me, took the time to go over my chart, asked a buuuuunch of questions. She's the first doctor I've seen in this country who wanted to know so much about my previous delivery and C-Section. She empathized with me AND actually agreed that I probably shouldn't have had to have a c-section if the baby or me weren't in any sort of distress (other doctors just made excuses for their fellow doctors). She is truly pro VBAC but she still tells it like it is.....lets you know if you want to do it you can but once you or the baby are at risk its off the table. I'm so grateful to have been able to get an appointment with her, the 4 month wait was well worth it and I'll definitely be sticking with her! :-)

So thats why I havent seen you in Pilates last few weeks Cleo. I keep recommending my doctor at CIty Hospital, her name is dr Azizunisa, she is the head of maternity at City Hospital and used to be the head of maternity at Al Wasl (now Latifah). For some reason I never see any recommendations for her but I think she is fantastic. And my previous pregnancy I had dr George so she had some pretty big ob-shoes to fill. ;-) That's super strange, I've never heard of Dr. Azizunisa. Dr. Brit referred me directly to Dr. Ann and I'd heard of Elsa from here....where is she from? I loved Latifah when I had to go there about two months ago because I wasn't getting any answers from City's Emergency Care. I was having contractions every 4 minutes and it turned out I had a UTI :-0 It doesn't look like the best hospital but the care there was GREAT! They were extremely thorough (even though they gave me a hard time about not having a file there). I even looked at switching to Latifah but I learned the Antenatal Package was 5000 (only 500 less than City) and I'd already paid for it at City. And they have shared rooms there, that's really a turn off...but yeah I was so impressed I'm sure any doctor that came from there is great. It is strange that Dr. Azizunisa is the head of maternity and not that popular. Maybe she doesn't take on as many patients as the rest of them (as she IS the head).

HI HUN! I'm back in Canada now because I planned to deliver here all along, but I was being followed by DR Elsa from week 5-28 and I loved her. I would suggest you keep your appointment and give her a shot. If I did choose to deliver with Dr. Elsa and stay in Dubai, she was extremely supportive of me trying for a VBAC. She listened, gave me her honest opinions and advice and said it to me like it was all while being very supportive of what I wanted. She told me what she would and would not do, but made it clear that safety and me and my baby would be priority. I highly recommend her even if you will be at 34 weeks, she's a lovely person and a fantastic DR! Thanks Cleo for the feedback :-) I decided to cancel my appt with my regular doctor for today and just keep the one with Elsa on Tuesday. Hopefully everything will go smoothly :-) I have a six year old myself and we definitely need all the extra help we can get! Good Luck!!

perkynana (Im reluctant to ask what that means...) thanks for your valuable input. So many women see Dr. Elsa and speak just as you have of her. I'm definitely going to the appointment and most likely switching to her. I understand that most of the time will be with the midwives, but to have a doctor that I know is on my side is key because as you said, the midwives do what the doctor tells them to.

Does anybody see Dr. Elsa at City?? I initially was seeing Dr Britt but as she won't be in town around my due date she had to refer me to a different doc. I asked for a referral for Dr. Elsa but I think it was easier for the nurses to put me with Dr. Ann as her schedule was more free. So I've been seeing Dr. Ann from about week 15 to 30. I finally was taken off of Dr. Elsa's waiting list and given an appointment at the end of this month but now I'm having second thoughts about switching doctors this late (I'll be 33 or 34 weeks when I see Dr. Elsa)> Dr Ann is fine, but I dont feel any connection to her really at all. She's pro VBAC in the sense that she didn't really protest when I told her I wanted a VBAC. I just want to make sure I have a doctor who's going to be on my side when I'm in labour, not one trying to push me towards another c-section and I've read soooo many things about Dr. Elsa being super pro VBAC.

BTW, anyone knows if they're having a boy or a girl? Any chance my doc will be able to tell on my 16 weeks scan tmrw, or am I being too optimistic? Hi Pichon, I dont know which hospital you're at but I've found that even though the doctor looks at my baby with the ultrasound machine in her office at City during every visit, the quality of the ultrasound is really not up to par with the machine they use for the 20 week scan. I kept thinking if the baby was in the right position that she'd be able to see but I really dont think the machine is designed for that much detail (I could be wrong). I wont be finding out till my scan on May 9th (22 weeks) as it was scheduled late due to the switch in doctors. Over the next three weeks or so we'll have alot of gender announcements!! Does anyone know now?

Hello Gujji, Sorry I cant really help you either but my daughter is five and we've been in Dubai since she was one AND she's been in school here since she was three AND she's NEVER had a vaccination. She's never had any problems enrolling in school. She doesn't have a regular pediatrician however. I just take her to the closest doc whenever she needs to go. Doctors seem made to scare the living day lights out of you. You should definitely do your research though (if you haven't already done so) on vaccinations. I will personally never understand the logic behind injecting toxins directly into the bloodstream, especially that of an infant/child. But you MUST do your research and be informed as Tattie Bogle says :-)

No way. Especially a carseat. That is something you should buy new. They are only good for so many years and are not to be used if they were in a car accident I've heard this quite recently as well. A friend told me that car seats "expire" after three years. I looked at her crazy, how could a car seat expire?? And for what reason??

Hi, I second what coffeebean says. Shea Butter is the best! My daughter developed really bad eczema when she was 3 months old and the only thing that helped was changing my diet (she was being strictly breastfed) and keeping her skin moisturized with shea butter. You have to be religious about it though and you also need to make sure you aren't using any cleansers that are drying the skin out further. I bathed her often with an oatmeal bath and used the shea butter at EVERY diaper change (yes, about 7 times a day!). I cant say it would have worked on its own though. I had to completely remove ALL dairy from my diet. She's five now and every once in awhile I see her scratch and I have to re-emphasize to her that we ALWAYS use shea butter every night after her bath. I highly highly highly hiiiiiighly recommend shea butter!

I've finally got a last minute appointment with Dr Elsa at the city hospital for tomorrow morning. Hi Soxy, how did you manage to get in with Dr. Elsa?? I had my first apt with Dr. Brit and as she won't be around for my delivery she said she'd need to recommend me to a diff doc. I liked her, but I immediately became super excited for a recommendation for Dr. Elsa. Despite my request, and her referral I did not get an appointment as there was nothing available :-( Still on the wait list for an apt with her though :-/

Yea it's tough, I'm pregnant and this may be my first and last! Can't deal with this nausea as well...does anyone know any good baby sites where I can find a good site for info, advice and products? I'm looking for something local if there is one... Hi Fatima, if your nausea is that bad you should ask your doctor to prescribe something. One of my friends was prescribed Zofran (Ondansetrin Orally disintegrating tablet 4mg) that she swears was a life saver for her. My cousin also had bad nausea into her second trimester and her doctor put her on Vitamin B6 which she says worked as well. I'd try the B6 first because its a vitamin, but definitely ask your doctor. Also nausea is worse when you aren't eating. I know you feel disgusting and eating is just yuck but keeping your water up and nibbling on crackers can actually help alot. If you dont like crackers try cheerios. You dont have to eat alot just alot of snacking, a cracker here and there if you can manage. Hope you feel better soon :-)

Hi ummzarinah Thanks so much for that info. I think it a bit odd that you can't have a tour of the hospital, but each country does things differently. I shall look into City I think as have heard lots of good things. Hope all is going well for you. Hi Bongo, I dont remember if I've posted this already but City does tours every Friday at 11am and 4pm. My husband and I went two Fridays back and fell in love with City. I don't know if the staff there are coached to answer all the questions right or what lol. But I was very happy to hear how pro natural they seem to be there and pro mom and baby. Allowing you to labor and deliver in the positions that are most comfortable, skin to skin contact within the first 30 minutes of birth, babies stay with mommy, pro breast feeding, etc. Also the quality of the rooms is up to par with American standards. It seems that perhaps you can walk into any hospital and ask for a tour though. I saw Welcare yesterday because I had to see a doctor due to these terrible headaches I've been having (she prescribed Magnesium btw which seems to be working because Tylenol did not). While I was pretty impressed with the doctor (Dr. Jennifer, American), I wasn't impressed at all with their labour and delivery rooms. They seemed old and the nursing staff was blah, it just didn't feel right to me. Then the entire maternity ward is on the ground floor very near to the exit which I just found to be peculiar in general. I mean you have to be buzzed in and out but it didn't make me feel to secure at all.

Awww thanks so much, I'm excited for #2. I always wanted 3 kids... but I think after this one I'm done. This nausea is really taking it's toll on me :( I still have hope for your #3. Honestly I believe God makes women forget about the nausea when our babies are born! Otherwise we'd never willingly put ourselves through it! The first time for me I was all like "This is terrible! I can't understand how there are so many babies in the world! Women are crazy! I'm never doing this again!!!" Lo and behold I'm having another (and you as well :-). We forget how bad it is and we think "Oh it wont be so bad" YEAH RIGHT!!!

Hi Guys!! Joining in your group :P I'm 8 weeks pregnant with #2, being followed by Dr. Elsa at City hospital. I had a c-section with my son (who is now 2) and really really hoping for a VBAC now and Dr. Elsa is so supportive of that. (i love that woman). I'm not sure if I will end up delivering in Dubai...may go back home to Canada for that, just so I can be around family, but we'll see. Pregnancy is elhamdullilah going well, except for the horrible morning/all day sickness. I'm really hoping this will pass soon. I don't know how much more of it I can take :( I saw someone mention Bikram Yoga, while pregnant. To my knowledge, I didn't think it was safe, just because Bikram Yoga is also known as "hot" yoga and exposing your body to very high temperatures is bad for the fetus? That's what I was told anyways... With my last pregnancy i gained over 60lbs!!! Im''m determined NOT to do that again. It was my first- I wasn't careful and thought being pregnant meant lying around and eating. Boy was I wrong! I ordered this set of workout DVD's called the Pregnancy Project. It's 9 DVD's for the 9 months of your pregnancy with workouts to suit each stage. I just need to muster up the energy to start doing them lol They're done by Tracy Anderson. I'm also going to look into regular pre-natal yoga classes-should help with the pregnancy aches and pains :) edited by Cleo4e on 04/03/2013 Hi Cleo, congrats on your pregnancy!! I tried to get in with Dr. Elsa but she's booked up until July :-( I'm looking to have a successful VBAC as well insha'Allah and Dr. Elsa seems like the best choice. I did make an appointment with her in late June just in case I decide its best for me to switch doctors :-o Right now I'm scheduled to see Dr. Britt later this month, hopefully all goes well and I don't need to switch doctors that late in my pregnancy. In regards to the Bikram Yoga, its designed to keep the room temp and your body temp at 98 degrees. Everything that I've read says that as long as you aren't increasing your body temp you're fine. Its just like taking a bath or getting in a heated jacuzzi or sauna, anything over 100 is not recommended as that is increasing your body temperature and while you can sweat and cool down, the baby cannot. So as long as you aren't increasing your body temperature you're fine :-) Please let us know how you like the Pregnancy Project videos. I've never heard of them going to look them up now....

Hello Ladies, Has anyone enrolled in any prenatal fitness classes? I'm really interested in taking up Bikram Yoga but the classes I found are all mixed and I don't really want to join a mixed class. Does anyone plan on taking antenatal classes? Where? With who? I heard about these antenatal classes by Cecile from a friend who took them when she was pregnant. She and her husband loved the classes. The instructors name is Cecile de Scally and her email and mobile are [email protected] 0555886298. The classes I believe are one day a week for four weeks @1500 AED. I know its early to be booking antenatal classes but anyone interested will at least have the info when needed :-) I've contacted her and am waiting for a response. Has anyone else heard of any other highly recommended classes? Has everyone picked a doctor? I have an appointment with Dr. Britt at City in 3.5 weeks. I'll be 16 weeks so perhaps they'll pro-rate their antenatal package :-/ Is anyone still having sickness/aversions to anything? What? I think, well I hope, my morning/all day sickness is over. I have an extreme aversion to sugar. Anything with the slightest amount of sugar makes me sick. Tried to eat a banana yesterday but my body said "No!" So I've lost some weight, I wish I could eat like this when I'm not preggo!! Is anyone having aches and pains? I was sleeping on my back the other day and got up to go cook dinner and everytime I put my foot down on the ground my lower back hurt immensely. It lasted for about 10 steps but it concerns me (and added to my motivation to do yoga!) I can't think of any other questions to ask at the moment. Just trying to liven this thread up a bit!!

OP, I only got a hospital tour of Latifa hospital similar to what you describe (ie, all smiles and open doors and friendly chatting with the doctors/nurses) because I knew a senior midwife working there and made a private appointment with her for that purpose. Ultimately I decided to deliver my children at Latifa because I was happy with staff commitment for the baby's wellbeing in every problematic situation and for adhering to UN Baby Friendly Initiative guidelines, the not-for-profit aspect of the hospital's ethos, staff experience with most delivery room critical situations, but also because I am comfortable with Arab culture and am used to the weird quirks that come along with it.The doctors and staff are overwhelmingly either Arab (Emirati and others) or South Indian. I knew beforehand that it's a teaching hospital for the young women at Dubai Medical College for Girls, and wrote stuff in the birth plan to keep the teenagers out of my active delivery room :) Hi Apricot, I don't think I can say I'm that comfortable with Arab culture, not in a hospital setting. I went to a predominantly Arab grade school and high school and while I'm comfortable with some aspects of their culture I'm not too sure I'd be comfortable at Latifa. I've heard a lot of good things about it but I'm not particularly fond of the shared L&D room and the potential unavailability of a private room afterwards. My daughter had an Arab doctor here who diagnosed her severe pneumonia, which I'm thankful for, but it was like he was untouchable. He NEVER asked us if we had any questions and before he even finished answering a question he was halfway out the door not expecting another one! It was sort of like we weren't supposed to ask questions and we were the odd ones. I know all Arab doctors aren't that way (the ones in America surely aren't) but it definitely rubbed me the wrong way. :-/ I also found that City Hospital does tours every Friday at 11am and at 4pm. You have to be super prompt I was told but I plan on going there on the 2nd.

I had a consultation yesterday with Dr. Hiba at DMC, she delivers out of City and was highly recommended by a friend. But I didnt really get the vibe that she was pro VBAC. First she wanted me to do some chromosomal disorder test, and then when she heard I wanted VBAC the first thing she says is "Ok, but you have five days after your due date to go into natural labor, after that you have to have a c-section" I dont know if this is true or not I'm definitely going to be doing my research on it but I really don't feel that that would be the initial response of a pro VBAC doctor. All in all I just didnt' click with her and so I am looking elsewhere. Will be 12 weeks Sunday so I guess I need to pick a doctor and package soon.

Humm.. I am very surprised and disappointed to see that a part of my message about my negative experience with dr Braithwaite has been erased. I do have a friend who was with dr. Sant and she was extremely happy so for me it looks like I will be paying her a visit after my 12 week scan at the fetal centre. Hi KenzaB, You should try re-posting. I'm interested to hear what you have to say. I think though I've decided to go with City Hospital instead of American. I tried to get in with Dr. Elsa as there are GREAT recommendations on here about her and how pro natural and pro VBAC she is but I'm wait listed till July :-( I think I may end up choosing another recommended doctor at City and then if I really like Dr. Elsa in June then I can simply switch.

Has anyone had experience with Dr. Braithwaite at the American Hospital? edited by Happy4 on 20/02/2013 Hello Happy4, welcome :-) I don't believe anyone here has had any direct experience with Dr. Braithwaite but I've personally read a lot of good things about her, she's definitely worth a consult, I've scheduled one with her myself :-) Is this your first? You're very very lucky to have no nausea, I hope it stays that way for you :-)

And I don't really want to go with a male doctor. I don't know if Dr. Marcus and Dr. George are the same but they both sound like men. The doctor who delivered my daughter was a man but that was in California and there's sooooo many choices of women doctors here.

Well I was high risk due to pre-eclampsia and ended up having to be induced because of it. But the only reason I was forced into a c-section is because I let them break my water before I even started dilating and 12 hours later I hadn't progressed enough to continue labouring due to the risk of infection for the baby. So I was totally scammed :-(

Hi Polly, I think it would greatly differ from mom to mom. I think with baby showers everybody is looking for super cute/thoughtful. One of my friends just bought me diapers, which, at the time, I thought was sort of dumb and unthoughtful. But she was already a mom and she knew that as a parent thats what you're buying ALLL the time. So after I actually had my baby I was really thankful for the diapers and wished I'd received more to stock up in a corner because they literally disappear! If you know what gender the baby is and whether or not he/she will have their own nursery then I'd suggest purchasing something for the nursery that you know she's missing. AND DIAPERS!!!!

Hi, I had a successful VBAC using the hypnobabies course. Its a self study set which I purchased while in US. If you are interested, I am selling it. Its in excellent condition complete with all material intact and no notes in the books. Hello Icedqueen, If you still have your hypnobabies course I am interested. I purchased it way back in 2007 when I was pregnant with my first. I liked it but I wasn't able to keep up with it and ended up being induced which led to a c-section. I wished I'd stuck to it and am currently 12 weeks pregnant, looking for the course. If you have it, please let me know.

Hello Ladies, I'm wondering if any of you had a natural delivery after a previous C-Section in Dubai and what your experiences were, which doctor, hospital, etc.

Hi ladies, thanks for your responses. I guess I'm going about this all wrong. It would help if the hospitals had like an open day or a tour of the hospital day like the hospitals in America do. You go on the hospital tour get to meet a couple of the doctors and then you feel pretty comfortable with your decision. Is the only way to do that here to pay 500 plus AED for individual appointments with 3-4 doctors???

Hi Bongo74, lin251, and KenzaB :-) There are alot of good doctors that have been recommended on this site and others. Amongst them Dr. Braithwaite (may have spelled that wrong) at American, Dr. Britt (think this doc is either at Welcare or City I forget), Dr. Luthra at Medcare, and a couple of others whose names I cannot remember. My firstborn was born in the US so I have zero experience with Obgyns in this country. Also there doesnt seem to be like an open house/tour of the hospital that can be arranged at these hospitals. I could be wrong because I've only looked online but definitely American, City, Welcare, and Medcare are the top 4 hospitals that all the ladies on here highly recommend.

Hello :-) I'm feeling....better, I hope. I think my nausea may be gone for the most part. I haven't had morning/all day sickness in about 3 days now but I'm only 10 weeks so I dunno. This is my second pregnancy. I have a five year old daughter that was born via C-section due to complications with pre eclampsia. I hope, Insha'Allah that this pregnancy goes well with no complications and that I am able to have a 100% natural labor and delivery. How about you? How are you feeling? First pregnancy? Have you found/picked a doctor yet??

Technically you are already their employee according to MOL. They've already paid the majority of the fees for your visa. The only remaining being 300 for your medical, 310 more to MOL, and 300 more to Immigration. Your labour card number has already been issued and bank guarantee already paid. All this being said, yes, they can ban you. If they choose not to ban you then you will not be granted an additional 30 days to stay here in the UAE. You will have to exit as of the visas original expiry date.
