Do you know that you can buy temporary insurance at the border? There is an office or 2 on the right just before the border and one right inside the Omani border building. You are KIDDING me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Are you sure you can do that for a rental car, too? We arrived at our rental car co at 8am in DIP, only to be told 'no,' at which point we had no choice but to purchase same day flights! Felt incredibly stupid, and spent a flippin' fortune there, but LOVED Muscat immensely and can't wait to return!

Hi Feefmick Hope you get this. We loved them, great trip, and the kids had a blast pretty much rolling around in the sand the whole time. The camp has running water & flush toilets, a bar, dune boarding, belly dancing, camel riding, and henna painting. They've also got the tamest, cutest baby donkey that I would have taken home with me if I could have. The camp is so well cleared and used, with big carpets everywhere, that you don't feel at risk for the creepy crawlies, which I would otherwise be a tad worried about here. My kids were up the hill all evening and through the dark, and I was worried about snakes or bugs, but was assured we were fine, and they had lights everywhere, including up the hill. I sent some people there this weekend and they said it was the highlight of their trip to Dubai. It was also great in that there is a bar so you can unwind and have a few. It's easy to do, you only need a little overnight bag and you're sorted. They told me one family went 5 times last year. Let me know if you go!

We moved from the US two months ago today! Dubai is a pretty spread out city so as DramaQn wrote, it all depends on schools and work. There are a ton of family places here, and it also depends on what you're into, if you have pets, etc. We are in the Meadows, but will probably live in another area next year, as much as we love the area here, and proximity to DH's work. If you are a burbs kind of family, Arabian Ranches might be more your thing. It also really depends on budget. And I also have a 5 year old girl and finding places for her was tricky. Once you respond with your budget, where your DH's office will be, and what sort of stuff you like to do, I can point you into a few directions & schools. There is plenty to do here, don't worry about that!

yay, a happy ending! We lost our cat 3 days after we moved into our villa a month ago. I was beside myself, going to all of the neighbors, security, fliers made, etc. 8 hours later, my son found him in our wardrobe. Ridiculous cat! He did that once in a clothes dryer years ago, too. I know that feeling of panic and dread, and in Dubai, especially! You're lucky to get them back in one piece. :)

ugh, wrote a long response, only to be logged out! you are a star for this! I really appreciate it. We are having to stop at Diamond Lease in DIP in the am (my fault, didn't occur to me that we couldn't just call and add Oman insurance), so we may not even get there till 4 or so. Sunday we'll hang at the beach and visit the souk and maybe the Mosque, Monday we're doing the dolphin dhow, and Tues maybe we'll meander back via Nizwa, if we have the stamina. I KNOW we'll be in Oman a lot, as even after only two months, I'm feeling the need to get out of Dubai a LOT. I like it here, just need to be a bit more connected to nature. Did the Bedouin Oasis thing a few weeks ago and loved it. I will pick up the off road book when we get back, so we can use it when we get a car, which we need to do in the next few weeks!

I am pretty sure we'll be back soon, and will have a 4x4 when we get around to getting a car! I can't wait to camp and go to wadi's there! I first have to get my UAE license, though, baby steps in Dubai, it would seem. Everything is taking forever! We are planning to cross the Oman border at Kalba, to avoid Eid swarms at Hatta. We were then going to just going straight on the main road till we got there. We were thinking of doing Nizwa on the way home, but to be honest, it doesn't matter where we go, we just wanted to do something different. We were going to do it in one day, but if we're dying from the drive we could stay in Nizwa, I guess. I'm just as happy to cut across at Al Ain, to be honest. But it would be great to find a little swim spot and old fort on the way home, and I think there are some that don't require 4x4's to get to. It's just the sorting out of the route that's a bit tricky. The road between Bahla and Ibri looks like it could take some time! What do you reckon Muscat to Dubai travel time is if we did the route you suggested?

Thanks, but looking at the description, it looks like a multi-region player, which we already have. And the thread about using your dvd player as a converter, tried that with ours, and not sure it's actually possible. We are really looking for a signal converter, which I've seen in other countries, but would sure be nice to pick one up here!

I'm here, fell asleep on the sofa, and was off to first screening of new Bond film this am. :) We are now scrambling to get Oman insurance, what a stupid oversight. Thinking we may end up hiring a 4x4 at the airport. Honestly, we're just looking for a nice diversion on the way home, and preferably without a 4x4 requirement. I thought that via Nizwa was one of the routes back to Dubai. Is the route you mentioned below via Nizwa, or something else altogether? I'll have a look at the link, as well. This might be more of a Muscat 'light' trip, ie we've not got our permanent car here yet, we're only 2 months in the UAE, so we're just doing a getaway, with a view to a second more offroad-ish trip in a few months' time.

I did mine once in the US and need to go again here, but I went to the best Dr in the area, and he was not a big fan of laser for spider veins, more for varicose. Injections are better for red spider veins, laser for blue. If anyone can name someone, I would love a recommendation. Re lasering, as part of this year's crazy mid life crisis (which included a mini tummy tuck, lipo, and a long overdue brutal foot surgery), I also started getting my tattoos lasered. The first Dr (this was all in the US), used an older laser, and wasn't a believer in pain relief for it. So I endured literally 30 min of having my flesh burned off, you could smell it in the room, and afterwards it felt like branding irons were on my skin for about 90 min after. He said it hurt less the next time, so foolishly I went back, only to endure the same again. Another 30 min endured, he told me people fainted and threw up all the time. WTF? I found a dream dr, who used numbing cream, then lidocaine shots, and a new laser, which meant the lasering took 3 min. Ugh, what a difference! He also didn't want to do my spider veins, and recommended injections. Again, I'm in for a good dr who does injections as my spider veins are persistent!

Amy, thank you. I forgot to add that at this age, also 8, his biggest challenge is staying focused, as well. How are you coping, ie are you doing anything about it, other than banging your head against the wall? I have a 5 year old who is very easy by comparison, could sit on a task for hours, while it's a constant reminder for my son to sit back down for a meal, for piano practice, for a game, etc. The thing I am so guilty of, though, is not getting frustrated, so in some ways he would be better served if he was on meds, as then he wouldn't get any earfuls at home. Either that, or I need to be, which I've seriously considered, as one of us has got to give, lol!

I would also like to add, for the OP, that structure is key for ADHD. I think I am the worst parent to have an ADHD kid, as I'm pretty sure I have it, too, though as an adult it manifests quite differently. But if you ask the teacher to focus on praising when he's behaving in the way she wants him to, it serves as a constant reinforcement to him to behave in the way he's expected in school. If she lays out clear expectations for him, and again, tells him he's doing a great job at doing them as he does them, it helps wonders.

wow, reading this thread is sending my bp through the roof!!!!!!!!!!!!! I have researched the living daylights out of ADHD, and have about a half dozen books on natural supplements. Have been to a massive symposium led by the leading ADHD experts in the US, have done acupuncture, supplements, diet changes, and naturpathic remedies. I am reminded, as I said before, that I really need to get back into behavior therapy & would like to try neurofeedback, but I often wonder if I'm doing us all a disservice by not putting my DS on meds. He's very thin, and knowing from others with ADHD kids, I'm paranoid that he'll be even thinner, which is almost inconceivable for him. I'm also paranoid that it will change his personality. BUT, this is our choice, now, and I won't be surprised if we don't end up on that path, regretting not having started sooner. It will be a last resort for us, but please do not insult our intelligence here about people simply throwing meds at our kids. I know that in the US this happens often, and it saddens me a great deal, as I do believe that some of the kids put on ritalin really could benefit from other behavior & dietary changes. It's part of the US culture, to throw drugs at something rather than get at the root cause. But with ADHD, it's a neurological thing, it's genetic, it's a legitimate disorder, for crying out loud, and I think that most parents only turn to medication when they've exhausted other avenues. Kids on ADHD have high suicide rates, and they aren't sure if it's because of the ADHD (ie brain chemistry) or because they've got low self esteem from being told off all of the time. We, as parents, want to make sure our kids lead happy lives, that they feel confident in their relationships with their peers. There was a study that one of the dr's mentioned that I loved. They filmed parents' interactions with 'normal' kids, and with ADHD kids, then they switched the kids and filmed that. The parents with both types kids were even-keeled, and kept their cool most of the time. When the kids were switched, the ADHD parents were the model of patience, and were far more calm than the other parents, while the parents of the 'normal' kids totally lost their rags with the ADHD kids. Please don't ask us to justify or validate what we KNOW is a problem for our children. We don't ask others to prove they have a mental illness, or some other sort of illness for which they require medications.

Natural Calm is effervescent magnesium, and you can look up dosage at vitacost, but I give the kid dosage, 1 tsp. I know you can find cal/mag or an effervescent mag here. I just got all of my books from the US, and will post a thread on some other supplements this eve, ok?

I have a son with ADHD, but we treat it with Natural Calm (magnesium) and/or Natural Calm for kids, lots of EFA's, and in the past, at your son's age, with strategies with the school counselor, that involved positive rewards for his managing a few behaviors that he has since grown out of. We grapple with whether or not to dose our son, but more because kids with ADHD tend to have self esteem issues throughout life, as they are getting told off all of the time for their bad behavior. I am guilty, as well, of forgetting that he can't always control himself, and am constantly reminding myself to be sensitive to that. We have a pretty good handle on it, and most of the behaviors are controlled by now, with our regimen above, and with positive reinforcement, maturity (8 not 4 or 6), a diet high in protein, low in sugar & dairy. He really has grown out of most of it, and touch wood, we've not had any problems in school here. Your post is reminding me that I need to try neurofeedback, as I've heard it's great. I would NOT put up with my kid being treated like an alien, ADHD or not. You are your son's advocate, and teachers should be positively reinforcing him when he's good, and meeting with you to set up a best strategy to deal with him if he's not able to control himself. If it's the last ten minutes, perhaps he can have a little note in his pocket of things he can do if he feels like he has an impulse to get out of his seat, get in others' space, etc etc. Our son would take deep breaths, sit on his hands, count to ten, whatever. He also got a ton of praise from his teacher when he was controlling his impulses. He also had a reward chart that we used at home, that worked wonders for him. I have about a half dozen books on the topic, and would be happy to loan you one, if you promise to return it! It is hard to remember that our kids can't help it, isn't it? But he is 6, and they are the professionals here. If they aren't able to positively work with you, I'd seriously rethink the school situation. Re telling them, that's a tough one, as you don't want him to be labelled, not just in the Dubai school system, but within his class setting. I think, honestly, you should go with your instinct on this one. I think you will know best, if you trust your gut. If you are working with a school that you feel values compassion and nurturing, then yes, tell them. But it sounds like it might not be the case here.

The place I return to is the area around Collioure, France. It's spectacular, they say like South of France was 50 years ago. Near to the border with Spain, big art & wine scene, lots of touring, cycling, etc. We stayed in a villa that was the best villa I've ever stayed in, walking distance to the lovely local village, with shops and a nice Geant, and cycling distance to a few others. Bikes at the villa. Pyrenees and Barcelona near by. I'm hesitant to hand out this link as we loved it that much and want to be able to book it again (DH is agreeing with me)! Good luck! http://www.tripadvisor.com/VacationRentalReview-g196598-d1920850-Villa_Les_Mimosas-Argeles_sur_Mer_Pyrenees_Orientales_Languedoc_Roussillon.html

I went to Juan Salon for my first and only cut to date here, in JLT. He was recommended here on EW. Although the conversation was a bit flat, he knew his stuff, and knew exactly what would suit me. He gave me a really good cut, and he trained in London under a famous stylist, but can't remember name now. I didn't really like the blowout by the second guy, and when you meet me you'll laugh at the prospect of my short hair being blown out, but I have really liked the quality of the cut. I will have him color my hair next time, as well (my greys are insane). https://www.facebook.com/JuanSalon?ref=ts&fref=ts http://www.juansalon.com/ Having said all of that, I just sms'd my friend who moved back to SA last week. She had just gotten a fantastic color and cut (after being a blonde covering greys like you her whole life) from someone she swears by, who's from England. Her hair really looked gorgeous, so I can post those details when she sends them.

It is so great for your skin, and I use Nutiva, which I got in the US. But I wouldn't spend the money on fancy stuff, just stuff you cook with. One brand that doesn't smell strong is Spectrum Naturals. You can find both of them on vitacost.com, and maybe in Organic Shop? You know it's also great for your thyroid? You are reminding me that I need to find a little empty bottle to put it on as I've not been using it since I moved to Dubai. Re smell, too, I like it at first, as it reminds me of a trip years ago to Tahiti, and once it soaks in, you can't smell it anymore.

sounds like anxiety and panic attacks to me. Yep, I get them, too, in the past few years, not very often. I don't really get the depression too much, thankfully, but I'm prone to melancholy and have to be really proactive to keep it at bay. How old are you? DHEA is brilliant, and maybe if you're late 30s-late 40s you should get your hormones checked. I did, but I still could do with a xanax now and again. Need to get a prescription for it somehow! Dubai isn't always a relaxing place either, I find. Maybe you can do yoga or some other exercise that will make you feel more balanced?

I have to say that I don't mind other kids coming to my neighborhood at all! When I lived in Providence, we lived pretty close to a REALLY dodgy area - guns, gangs, the works - so all of the kids from the 'poor' area came to us, and I had to stock up to supply them. They were thrilled to be able to trick or treat in a safe area. And last year, in our place in NY, we were forewarned that we'd be inundated with kids on our street. Wow, like nothing I've ever seen. There's a kids parade about two blocks from our house, which draws families from many other local villages, and then they all head up our street to trick or treat. We gave out candy to over 350 kids, so there must have been about 500 people on our block. It was insane, but such a treat for the kids. We are now lucky enough to live in the Meadows, and I'm totally cool paying through the nose to buy candy (which I'll eat later, naturally, wouldn't want it to go to waste) for kids who want the novelty or experience of Halloween. I'm sorry if I sound a bit like a Pollyanna here, too, I just happen to LOVE Halloween, and wish I could pimp our house out here like we do in the US, complete with bodies hanging, gravestones, creepy music, etc etc.

I would add that you should also consider where you will be living/working, as well. I know that a lot of families drive/bus kids to school, but if I could do it over, I'd live closer to the school or pick a school closer to me. The school run is a bit of a pain for me. The years you are looking for are tough, and Fiona would be helpful. I met her and spoke for a few hours with her, and she gave me some good advice. If you won't be able to come in advance to look at schools, I'd spend the money on working with her, as she will take care of the legwork based on understanding your kids' needs.
