That sounds perfect, but I wonder if it's reliable, and I wonder what they do about packages? I'm really struggling with our current mail forwarding service in the US, coupled with missing items at DH's work. Grr, so annoying! Did you see my response re Bedouin Oasis?

Verdeque: Sorry to digress, but can I ask you about the Bedouin Oasis experience? I've been looking at their website recently as we have guests coming and was thinking of camping overnight there. How much did it cost? What were the activities they allude to? What were the toilet facilities like? Would it be suitable for children? Was the food good? I cannot say enough good things about it! Was fab! It is 340 pp/100 for kids over 5 (free under). We used the entertainer voucher, but got an extra tent, so ended up paying 680 for two adults and two kids, dinner and breakfast included. There are two single mattresses in each tent (not super comfy but fine), nice bedding, torches, water bottles - all in the tents. The location is beautiful, very high standards, very clean, great staff. Activities are camel riding, dune surfing, belly dancer after dinner, shisha tent, henna tent. Also a full bar!!!!!!!! Food was superb! We will def return when visitors come! Enjoy!

Just be mindful that we are going into winter, so from end of Nov onwards expect heavy dew (which will soak the material), then possible rain. Ensure whatever you get can be moved at a minutes notice, or at least have home space for it to live in when not being used. You really just need the carpet, cushions/cushion chairs, which can easily move in and out. It is a lovely novelty, but the novelty wears off quickly and you may find yourself back to the outdoor setting. I say that from experience. We had it all year one (from Deira side stores), fun, Arabian, wore off, went back to what we were good at (outdoor areas). At MILs house they are good at the tents so I love it there, but at home it is an outdoor area. Check Deira side for more stuff, Sharjah would be cheaper, though. Hmm, I will take that into consideration, hadn't even occurred to me. I will have a look at Dragonmart this morning as I have to go for curtains there, anyway. Thank you for the heads up!

If you don't want to put him down, watch a ton of episodes of the Dog Whisperer! He's brilliant, and a lot of episodes are on small dogs. Let's get him to come to Dubai! We have two small terrorists, so I can really relate to your post. I don't agree that your dog can't be retrained. If he has some redeeming qualities, maybe there's someone who would be willing to take him on and spend the time needed? It's almost impossible to commit to the time needed to consistently train a dog when you have small kids, trust me, I know, too! I seem to recall finding a place here in Dubai that has that same sort of stern approach to bad behavior. Maybe you can find them online. Best of luck!

We did this in our garden: gazebo from ACE, curtains, flowing chiffon + decorations from Dragon mart and Majlis (the arabic seating) from Dragonmart (shopGBN07). Looks nice! Ah, and some shishas...:D Thank you! How much was your gazebo from ACE? And so you had to add curtains from Dragonmart? Was this the big garden shop on the left side? I love it there!

I'm setting up our back garden, and love the idea of having carpets & cushions to lounge around on. Anyone know where I can buy stuff for a tent that will sort of look like a Bedouin one? Or know of anyone who'll come and set up a tent like that in your garden? It doesn't have to be completely authentic, but I do like the idea of having a ton of those cushions to sit/lie on! We spent the night camping at Bedouin Oasis (which I highly recommend) and I'm sold on the idea of having that sort of look somewhere, but with open sides all around (there was one like that there), hanging lamps, etc.

Yes, Fida in Satwa used to stock the curtain tape. http://www.merrick-day.com/uk/info/ency228.htm brilliant link, thank you. We've got the type with a track so I'm going to try to sort it out with hooks only, or maybe the hooks and tape. I've only driven through Satwa once but I'd love to go back. Hopefully they have hooks, which is what I really need. BTW your comment on the 'should I feel guilty' thread slayed me!

Hi My husband has one, too, and gave it up to come here a little over a month ago. But, before he did, we spoke with two immigration lawyers and two accountants, just to be absolutely safe. We have properties in the US, as well. If you are gone for more than 2 years you are losing it, anyway, so in the end for us, it made no difference. It's not difficult to reapply for it, even with property. We thought of putting the properties in my name, but according to the accountants, it really doesn't matter, and could be seen as a benefit when we want to return. Hope that helps.

Lol! I gotta get my boogie on before I have to replace a hip, right? I've not yet been to Bur Dubai, nor Media Rotana, for that matter. (Been here a month). We are going with some friends and are planning dinner first, preferably with Entertainer but won't die if not. So... any ideas? We live in the Meadows, if that helps. Thank you!!!! Maybe we'll be shaking our things side by side to Murder on the Dance Floor one day! :) Hee hee.... Well if you're in The Meadows then probably would suggest going to Channels in Media Rotana. Its in The Entertainer. Its a buffet (You can pay a bit extra to upgrade to alcohol package... Would be rude not too!!) and the food is lovely. Then slip yourself and your ra ra skirt down the lobby into Nelsons, where the music and lights (Get me?!) should be just about kicking off. Channels is open from 7pm till 11pm and if you upgrade its free flowing drinkie poos all night. Enjoy.... And Happy Birthday for tomorrow. Yay, I'm checking it out now! Thank you. But did you see, like the soon to be 44 year old that I am, it occurred to me that my birthday is actually Monday. Doh! Do you think there'll be dancing tonight, and any people there? I hope so!

I looked at Frankie's and it looks great, I will have to go there, but I think it's only live music, and I'm looking for a place that's more a bar not restaurant with a dj and the music we grew up to, from 70s through to today.

So, I'm turning 44 on Sunday, and was wondering if there's a place we could go out tomorrow night that wouldn't be playing trance or electronic or whatever music filled with leggy twenty somethings. Would like to actually know the songs we're dancing to, and be surrounded by people who are not part of a scene but just looking to have fun, like we are. Am I asking too much, or does such a place exist? Thanks!

Amy, exactly! It is about being well-bred, isn't it? And that's nothing to do with money. I woke up this morning thinking about this thread and about how some people in Dubai are so rude (and I don't mean locals) and I was grateful to my parents for teaching me to be kind and respectful, and to always give people the benefit of the doubt. It's not anyone's fault if they weren't born into the same situation we were. And, I'll get off my high horse now! :) I do love Dubai, but know I'll have to put the blinders on to really enjoy it. I'm glad to be in my 40's, where things don't bother me so much anymore.

I really don't get it. Even the nouveau riche don't tend to be that awful to others, just awful to be around, as they flaunt their new found trappings of wealth in a gauche way. I seriously doubt that I would change to the extent that I would treat the labourers/help so poorly. If anything, I'm constantly reminding myself how fortunate we are and try to be very kind to them.

In my mind, this is something that comes from upbringing. So you either have good manners, and know how to be polite, to pretty much everyone you come across, where possible, or you don't. In the short month I've been here, while I do love it, I can't believe some of the bad manners I've witnessed. And people do seem to feel free to voice their opinions about other races, and to treat 'the help' so disrespectfully. The people you are describing don't at all sound like people I'd want to be around. Life is too short to be with people who aren't kind and respectful at their core. Move on, unless you think they will change, in which case I like the idea of saying something like 'I'm sure you didn't mean to be so rude.' The sense of entitlement here is ridiculous, isn't it?

Good for you!!!!!!!!!! Funny, had you not gone to the police and KHDA, I bet the school wouldn't have been so reactive so quickly. You did the right thing, and your son knows he can count on you to protect him. So proud of you, and hope this is soon a distant memory for your son.

I really feel for you! And glad you went to the police station, as I wouldn't have even thought of that, but that should scare the heck out of the bus driver and the school. Can you follow the bus to school to confront them as they get off and get their full names? Can your son tell you their names? Please do go to their teachers and the head teacher, and insist that they protect your child! Keep that fire in you! If it makes you feel better, my son asked if I could home school him today, as the schools here are so different from what they're used to. I'm just trying to get as much as I can out of him every day, to stay on top of anything he or his sister needs help with. If you ever need to speak with someone privately, let me know and I'll post my email address for you. Best of luck tomorrow! DS did told me their names - only first names - and that is more than enough, the bus is a hiac one that max it will take 11 passenger in. Believe it or not, I was bullied when I was in school, I know that feeling, and my children or any child in the world should not know this feeling. Omg 11 kids only and this has been going on! Hope you have some strong words with the driver in the am!

I was actually suggesting that you just get their names, not find their homes. While I would also be outraged (and have been in your shoes), do you think the school might have had the benefit to do something about it before you contacted KHDA? I'm just trying to imagine the school's reaction, so you can expect it tomorrow. I understand you're very upset, but I do hope that they will intervene and deal with it on your son's behalf swiftly, as well. I also think the apology from the boys is a great idea. Your poor son, I hated my son having to deal with that sort of thing at such a young age. It sort of takes away from their innocent world view.

If it were me, I'd get on that bus, or follow it to school, find each boy, take their names down, and head straight to the Head Teacher, and also reach out to their parents. They need to know that you will not tolerate that sort of behavior. It's beyond belief that a 5 year old is being treated like this, and he needs to know that you will protect him. I would def ask the driver to put him in front, as it sounds like it needs to be, anyway. He is much too young to have to deal with this, and there's no way he'll have the tools to cope with it. Obviously you can mention it to the driver in a kind, but firm way, so the driver is on your side and doesn't feel threatened. But if they do nothing, complain! I have a 5 year old, and an 8 year old. My 8 year old has been bullied twice in his life. The first was on a school bus, when he was 6, and I went to the house of the kid, and spoke with the parents, in a non-confrontational, but informative way (ie there's no way the kid would be going home telling his parents he was bullying someone). My son had been trying for some time to tell him to stop, but I had told him to let me know if he needed my help, and he finally told me he was having a hard time dealing with it on his own. The second time was when he was 7, and the kid was awful to him. I called his mother, who was mortified, and I thought that would be that. But weeks later, my son was in tears and asked me to help out. This time the mother flipped out on me (she was nuts) and pulled her kid out of school. The teacher told me secretly she was glad he was gone but that it made no sense that they pulled him out of school when they could have worked it out somehow. My son is not the type to be bullied, but he has very good manners, and I think he can't wrap his head around kids who could be cruel to one another, so he'll start with talking with them, and I've coached him on what to say, but to be honest, if kids are determined to bully, they won't stop. If it's not in your personality to step in, maybe your husband can? I'd escalate fast and hard to nip this in the bud, as it must be very daunting for your poor little one to go to school each day.

sadly, I think option 3 will be what you'll have to do. They are nasty, and I've had two friends with very late stage lyme disease (permanently changed their lives, still have it), so I'm pretty tick- averse, as well. Thank you. We are moving house tomorrow and Monday, a big reason we feel rushed! Plus I have read throughout the maids section here but I still can't figure out what to do if she simply doesn't renew with them and comes to us. Can we do a 30 day visa? How long will her visa be current after her contract with the agency finishes on the 22nd? I really am tired just now so maybe I'm not seeing what I'm looking for. A lot of it seems to be around new maids, but clearly there is a protocol for those already here, as they are always looking for new work when their contracts with current families runs out.

They were the most reliable agency I'd come across in terms of showing up and on time, as well as catering to last minute bookings. Good luck with it x I will try them, thanks! It didn't even occur to me that it could be a wolf spider, but I think it was a red back, and a friend of mine has seen 5 in her garden, just down the road. He's only 7.5 lbs so he's damned lucky to be alive. We are in Springs in temp housing, and he was in the garden when I was about to put the kids down last night. I noticed when I was back from putting them to bed that he was twitching a lot and was very restless, but didn't think much of it. He came to me as I was online so I picked him up and noticed a puncture that had a bit of blood coming from it to the right of his nose, and that it was really swelling up. My DH had just left earlier for business, and I have no sitters, and it was my kids' first day of school so I didn't want to wake them in the middle of the night to take them out. Was a long stressful night, and I was worried he would die, as he was panting a lot and his heart was racing and he spasmed throughout the night. I was planning to take him after the school run, but he seemed fine when I got back. I left it a bit, but then noticed that he was not eating or drinking, and he had diarrhea and vomiting as the day progressed. Got a pretty bad sitter on short notice (busy bees) and went for eve appt at vets, after kids were asleep. Found out he was in anaphylactic shock, which I feel awful about. Poor little guy could have used a steroid shot last night, and had my DH been home, he would have taken him in for an emergency appt. He's not had any water or food today, and was prescribed antibiotics. I'm pretty freaked out, as we're about to move into a bigger place next week in the Meadows (in Springs now), and my kids are 5 and 8, and this is not something I care to repeat! Fingers crossed he will be better tomorrow, bless him. edited by verdeque on 09/09/2012 Poor thing and poor you. I hope he gets better. I hope you find a better sitter or someone full time who can help you out on those occasions when you need some extra help. These sorts of things always seem to happen when you're on your own and can't leave the kids. Might be worth getting some spider spray for the garden although I have no idea how effective it is. I'm always moaning at my daughter not to walk around in the garden with no shoes but I can't do much about the cat or the puppy. Fingers crossed for you. Thank you! We are all a bunch of bare footers, too, so that'll be tough. Now you can wag your finger at her and tell her someone on here actually had a real bite experience! :) I will insist that LL sprays garden, and hope my pets and/or kids don't get ill from the spray! LOL. I am tempted to have a maid just for this sort of thing, but I don't really relish the thought, to be honest.

Oh, that's what was deleted! It's great so far, comical, actually, but I like that. Where do you live? We are in Springs, about to move into Meadows, if the repairs on our new place are done on time. The kitchen and ground floor were flooded and all cabinets ruined due to a burst pipe in ceiling. Umm, dog bitten by red back spider last night and went into anaphylactic shock, and on day one of school I managed to get stuck in the sand & need rescuing. Pretty funny! Other than my dog, the rest just makes me laugh! I'm ALWAYS game for some wine! Have been doing that a bit with a girlfriend I met at the pool already! :)
