Exxon used to use this compound.....thinking it is not new? The US army also had housing on it at one time but pulled out due to noise complaints. Never heard any good reports of it but maybe it has changed or not the same one.

BA have had the extra luggage for a relatively small cost for years....have used it many times flying back from USA. Agree with Lulu.....crappy planes and sometimes surly staff onboard! Hate the stop off in Bahrain....so pony up for QA. I have flown Emirates and they are on a par with QA with a better luggage allowance but flight departure is in the middle of the night.

You can book luggage all way thru with Qatar and BA or BMI as long as one ticket..have done that many times. Since BMI stopped flying to Glasgow...have no option but to connect with BA. They are sticklers for the luggage weight when travelling back when connecting with Qatar Air. BMI never questioned it....my Qatar luggage allowance is more as silver flyer...but BA insisted on either charging me 350 quid excess or pay 35 quid and pick up luggage in Heathrow and transfer myself. This was a major pain....but was not paying 350. Now I only travel with BA luggage allowances when connecting.

You can go to Al Ahli hospital in West Bay and see family doctor there...equivalent to a GP....cost approx is 350QR from what I remember. Failing that, there are specialists you could see but not sure if they would be a step too far right now..the GP might just do the trick. If he thinks you need it..he can refer you on.

Think they are now wanting all E gates to be on new chipped ID card. I went to al gharaffa to get new egate....had old seperate one...they gave me along with new chipped ID card on the spot.....think this would only be available at the big immigration offices as involves new iris recognition machines etc.

I agree with what Jill and Gina said...I looked into my daughter coming here when she graduated if she did not get job and was told if she came in unmarried she would be able to be sponsered by my husband. She could then get a RP and work here as long as he remained. If he left and she remained, she would need to get her employer to take on sponsership or marry someone who could do that. This applies to girls....different rules for sons. I think the options for vocational training are poor and pretty expensive.

Not a tennis player but there are quite a few leagues here...check out Khalifa International Tennis & Squash complex.....this is where the official Qatar Open is played...starts Jan 3rd I think.....there are many courts and lessons available. The bigger compounds have tennis courts and leagues are available throught them, work and most of the hotels. Players of all ages and standards. Beach clubs are within the major hotels...think their websites should have info...try Intercontinental, Grand Hyatt, Doha Sheraron, 4 Seasons, Ritz Carlton.

Just a heads up....spoke to DHL delivery guy this week re import taxes on a parcel delivery....this is a new law just implemented....charge of 250QR for " legalisation " ....he had no idea what that was, rest of charges took it to 325. He said based on initial value of orders and will be applied to all shipments incoming to Qatar. Major problems with customers for him since.....this will make me think twice before ordering overseas again....watch and see!

Has it pluses and minuses..seconded so down to local company..who thought it was fine to sit on the job till they decided they wanted to do it....many angry phone calls there. Plus, went for medical, guy picked up me first in bus, then proceeded to do a magical bus tour of Doha picking up 20 others..took, I swear to god, 4 hours. When we got there, with my BP sky high, the local guy met us.....handed me the passport and papers and said yella go?! Men not allowed in of course, but had no females to help. A four bus journey after that escapade pushed me to my limit..dropping all and sundry off....made my husband drive all way to get me or I was leaving the country. Same with the driving...they take you up..point you in right direction but don't actually do much...

LOL...can only speak from my experience re employer help...husband works for major oil company...and all spouses get help through all Qatari formalities....not sure how much it actually helps, but they at least have a notion of what they are doing even although they have no urgency about doing it. Re insurance....I obtained temp license within a week of arriving and had RP within the month...although it is now fast tracked to all being done in one week. My husband had been here for a few months before me and had RP and insurance etc....from what I can rememeber I was ok to drive on temp license.....or do you mean insurance with the international license Marycatherine? The only reason I saw the FCO advice was because I googled for info as I knew the international license used to be mandatory but the rules had changed. It is typical Qatar...no-one has a clear idea of what the actual laws are...sure they make them up as they go along.

http://www.fco.gov.uk/en/travel-and-living-abroad/travel-advice-by-country/middle-east-north-africa/qatar See above link from UK Foreign Office....it says you cannot drive on international license....but I know people do. You do not need a resident permit to get temporary driving license....UK one will suffice......this will allow you to drive until the RP is through...then apply for full Qatari one. Most companies sort this out for you, or at least help you to sort it out.

Hey....you don't need international driving licence..... As to what to bring...where would I start! Have UK shops here with stuff at about 20% more expensive than back home....kids clothes etc would be handy....bedding, especially quilt covers which are expensive and lacking in choice. Basic kitchen stuff is here, not expensive. If you use specific make up....might be a challenge to find it and to find your correct shade. Adult clothes are ok....restricted in choice.

Just left Al jazi..a forced move by my husband's company....al jazi is an older compound, with a superb location..close to West Bay and all the major hotels. Dess is close by, american school a good bit further. The compound houses are dated but quite large inside, usually unfurnished I think. The facilities on site are good, two pools, tennis courts, good gym. One grocery store, bakery, restaurant and pizza/pasta delivery shop. Maintenance is ok..usually done quite fast but they are generally carried out by unskilled guys who cannabilise parts from old used units...so can be frustrating. Tv service over the past year has not been good..it was provided...via some kind of beam back from the compound clubhouse boxes...kept lsoing it, and taking longer and longer to repair. Looks like now, because Exxon are pulling out, TV will not be provided and you will need to install cable/satellite yourself. Overall I loved it, big wide streets, nice established gardens, some walled in with great privacy.

I was told 20 years...but my dad had one put in 25 years ago and still going strong....think it just depends. My doc says you have to weigh up what you want...better life now while you know are young enough to enjoy it...who knows if you will even be alive 20 years down the line. Waiting till you are in middle age to get it replaced means that you will have 20 years of how you live now...only you can decide if you can do that. Constant pain can wear you down..it affects your whole life, going hols, enjoying days out etc. Plus recovery from op when you are younger is much faster. It is more common nowadays to do replacements at young age..because what happens now is that you are putting all your weight on your "good" side, and so damaging it, plus affecting your spine etc. Don't get me wrong, after the op, you need help, so having young kids may not be the best conditions...you have so many restrictions for the first 6 weeks that some kind of help is necessary. edited by weekirst on 04/06/2011

I know exactly where you are coming from...I had my hip replaced in UK in 2009, age 48...had been living with pain for a couple of years. Nothing will help with bone on bone pain, the painkillers will diminish it. They can give steroid injections, which do help, but what can happen is that they minimise the pain so much, you go back to normal behaviour and wear the bone away even more...and so pain is worse when the shot wears off..there are limitations on how many injections you can have. The op, scary as it sounds, was not as bad as I had imagined..lasted one hour, was walking by day 2...out by day 3. No real pain issues, stiffness and limited mobility...need help putting on clothes for first while. Your pelvis also tilits to accomodate the way you walk now, ie you switch weight to "good" side and so pelvis tilits with time..needs to be retrained, and muscles need to be stretched out...best thing to do is walk, walk walk! I don't regret doing it...your choice of surgeon will be the most important thing to get right...I had mine done in Glasgow....the best hip guy in UK, is a woman, based in london...sarah allwood...she was a man, did queen mothers hip..has terriffic reputation.

Same thing happened to me when hit my 40's..never had nose issues before..was living in Houston at the time..thought it was allergies although only showed symptoms of post nasal drip and constant headaches..nothing worked, tried everything..have to say the saline wash with specialised pot did help. I ended up doing the op...suffered for few days afterwards due to uncomfortable packing up nose, could not sleep well. Once that was out, I saline rinsed every day , multiple times and it healed super fast. I also had deviated septum corrected...not had a problem since. On the odd ocassion I have that stuffy feeling, I steam my nose with water and olbas and it does the trick.

I always stride past the guys....have never been stopped....you are allowed into the checkin desks at every other airport with passengers, so why not here. Have to say, maybe I have just been lucky, but have also never had an issue with queues, staff etc and usually fly Qatar economy. The downside of the airport is through the other side, there are never enough seats at the gates.
