You are certainly not alone in being in 3 bankrupt airlines, so you will also understand that there is life after EK, which is why we chose to have a home away from the unstable ME. We need security and a safe place for our kids. Also when we retire, we want to retire at home. House prices are increasing all the time, so maybe the money you are saving now by not having a mortgage, you will end up spending on increased house prices . Just saying...it's horses for courses....

Rickadon & Siennachick, great posts... Ok , " if you don't like it , there's the door " ... Doesn't work in the aviation industry . If a senior Captain who has been here for let's say 10 years , leaves , he will more than likely go back to a First officer . Reduction in salary , i do know some pilots who are happy with this . Not all companies will hire a senior captain as a captain. Pilots spent years and years training to be captains , and they have extremely rigourous and complicated checks regularly , it's not just a case of putting on the uniform ... So with mortgage , credit cards , car loan , personal loan and kids at school it's not an easy decision to make. I too would love to know where all the fantastic places are that give us 50% off.... I've not seen any recently. I'm sure if there was another company , where the pilots could work less hours , on a commuting roster , on the same pay , then more would leave .

I think you are supposed to check the temperature with a meat thermometer .... But I'm nearly 50 , and have cooked xmas turkey for over 30 years and never used a thermometer .... I would probably try 4 hrs on high , then 2 hrs on low then dig it with a skewer to see how it's doing, then you can decide whether to carry on cooking on high or low .

Funny you should post this question, because I was wondering the same thing a few weeks ago. After doing some research, it appears that you can cook the turkey in there, but it's best to brown the skin before adding it to the crock pot , I really can't be bothered to do that, to much washing up ! , and do not stuff the bird. I often do whole roast chickens in there, so I suppose it's not much different .

I can 100% recommend Chalet Chabi, in Abondance. It won't break the bank , rooms are fairly small , but it's a lovely small family run hotel. It has a small jacuzzi pool , indoor pool , table tennis etc etc. They will run you to the slopes. The slopes are brilliant for absolute beginners and you can easily access more difficult slopes. Food is amazing , we have 3 kids, who loved it too.

You poor thing , I know exactly what you are going through, and it's awful. We are an English family who were living in France before moving to Dubai. My children spoke English , but were better at reading and writing in French. Just be patient, don't let the teachers rush them or bully them to learn . One weekend my kids were given over 60 spellings to learn, it was absolutely impossible. They did eventually catch up , but even now , 10 years later , they got A* in French and E in English

You could get Ravi's takeaway curry, I think for your budget you can easily get plenty of food. Do a stack of papadums in microwave, make some onion chutney and raita, that's a great starter. I think curry is a British favourite !

I've had a robot roomba for years, it's programmed to clean every night , and every morning it's dust compartment it full, and we don't have any pets. I don't think it likes going from hard floor to carpet or rugs much , as it often flicks out stuff it's already picked up.

My son took a fridge with EK, from Dubai to London. It was in original box, clearly stating what it was , and there were no problems. I think it went as outsized baggage, but not sure.

You need to treat this as soon as possible. Go have a hot bath or shower and have a packet of frozen peas to hand. Alternate between hot and cold. The cabbage will help too. If you feel unwell or have any red patches or a high fever go to docs or hospital.

As a local , you are less likely to be ripped off like the rest of us ! Where do you want to buy the land ? I know one place in Negombo who maybe able to give you some advice. Propertymarket , Negombo I cannot vouch that they are not dodgy , but they may be able to give you some good advice , especially if they think they will get a sale from it !

Try the electrical shop under hyper panda in Festival city... I saw some dysons in there a while ago. For your fabrics... Take a large mug of coffee, be prepared to go through every fabric book in the shops at Dragonmart. I found some beautiful fabric in satwa, but the guy wouldn't budge on the price , so I went on the hunt to Dragonmart, and got the curtains for under half the price..... There are lots of shops to choose from.

There is a little restuarant that over looks the creek, sorry I don't know the name, the entrance is in the Fabric souk , then you could get an Abra across to the other side and have a look at the shops there . There is also a fab brunch at , Nineteen. Lovely peaceful setting , with views over the golf course. There is a special offer at the moment on groupon, so it won't cost you a fortune. Musadam, is a great place to see the dolphins and some great scenery. Hatta, see the dam , and hatta pools , picnic or go to hatta fort hotel for lunch. edited by Wife of 777 on 03/03/2015

I've had a couple of the traditional style upright Dysons, I think the suction is good ( on carpet ) but they are really cumbersome . Every time you want get into the corners or the skirting boards , or cobwebs ,you have to take the whole handle apart . I now have 5 Henry hovers which are fantastic , really long electric cable so you don't have to keep unplugging it for each room.

DH bought me a necklace for Xmas and unfortunately I don't like it. I visited the shop to ask for a refund. The manager said she couldn't authorise a refund and asked me to call the area manager. He told me it's UAE law not to give refunds. I called the consumer rights and they said it's not UAE law it's up to the shop if they give you a refund. They also said that it is illegal to have any notices in the window with regards to refunds ! Even if I fill out a complaint with Consumer rights I still will not get a refund...
