On my return to the UK I expected to be able to do an induction year only according to the information I was given by Sunderland out here. The current situation in the UK, from bitter experience and as advised by Sunderland Uni there as well as other authorities, is that you will need to redo/repeat the PGCE or prepare to work as an unqualified teacher (HLTA, Assistant) on rubbish wages. edited by wikidz1 on 14/01/2013

Please consider very carefully before choosing your PGCE course. I did a PGCE with Sunderland in 2000 and then taught in the ME for the next two years. Beforehand the people running the course assured me it was just as valid as doing it in the UK. I made enquiries and was told at the time that I could do the induction year in the UK with this PGCE. However, upon my return to the UK in 2004 Sunderland University told me I would have to to repeat the PGCE course in the UK. I attempted to convert it by replacing the teaching practices with UK teaching practices, done through a reputable college, but, despite my successful completion of these, no QTS was forthcoming. My own experiences of the course involved a distinct lack of resources- no teaching from Sunderland, no lectures, no back up materials or access to the e-library whatsoever. What it did give me was questions to answer and a series of essays to write. I was very well motivated and independent, supported by a most fantastic headmaster who himself had worked in teacher training, but ultimately it was an expensive mistake and one would be much better off doing it in the UK. edited by wikidz1 on 14/01/2013 edited by wikidz1 on 14/01/2013

The charity Feline Friends have a good site where you can post them as found and it also has a section about what to do if you find a cat (or two.) They may be able able to take them but they rely on volunteers, but are very active about re-homing. It is possible that they are microchipped and have wandered, so take them to one of the many vets and get them scanned.

It is no wonder you are apprehensive after the last experience! The main thing for you must be to make sure the package is of a decent standard, that arrangements are all in place and that the employer understands your requirements. You do not need to be worrying about risk or fretting over sacrifices. If you can sort it so that you have peace of mind, then come. I was a bit doubtful as I was very happy with my life in the UK, but the warm and friendly welcome from everyone here has been amazing. Also the tax free salary, the sun and general ease of daily living are very seductive. There are small annoyances, as anywhere, but all fine if approached with a sense of humour. Good luck with your decision! edited by wikidz1 on 27/12/2012

Thank you all for your kind offers and useful info. Within a week this independent but sweet little cat has wormed her way into our hearts and now we just can't imagine life without her. A visit to Dr Matt at Desert Vet tells us she is not microchipped, and no one seems to have lost her. We will sort her out and take her home when we leave.

Thank you. I will take her to the vet anyway on Wednesday. Which is the best one to us?, I am in Jumeirah, down the Satwa end and will be in a taxi. BTW I can email pictures of her if anyone suspects she is theirs. As a cat person of 30 years, I am already very fond of her!

Please be very careful about the Mirena, you only have one body. My sister used it for several years during which time she experienced extreme tiredness and headaches, then migraines and lethargy, finally epileptic fits of increasing severity and duration. The medical profession categorically refused to consider any connection with the mirena and the epilepsy was investigated through normal medical routes, but no explanation found. At this point my previously strong and healthy sister expected to die from a fit sometime very soon. Against medical advice she then insisted on having the Mirena removed and, from that point onwards, all her signs and symptoms disappeared and she recovered. Then, as a journalist by trade, she decided to research the connection. This revealed links between ill health and toxic trace amounts of heavy metals released into the body by the Mirena. She was warned off on all fronts and none of her contacts in the UK would publish or air anything to do with the story. It seems that the large pharmaceutical firms can with-hold information about their products (they only publish certain side effects) and can influence a great many people.

I have just had a similar thing with a tight chest and terrible sinuses. Being new to Dubai I put it down to the AC. It has taken a good couple of weeks to shift, just keep taking the sinus symptom relief stuff available over the pharmacy counter to keep the airways clear. Don't worry- you can fight it off!
