Thanks everyone for your responses - it seems a real shame that there isnt a coffee morning close by :( the reception staff have confirmed that i am close to the burjuman mall. I dont yet have a car to get to festival city etc so looks like i will have to wait patiently until we move to our permanent residence. If anyone would like to meet for a brew, it would be nice to socialise. Warm wishes Olwyn Heading off on holidays for a week or so tomorrow-once I am back you are most welcome to come around for a cuppa or two-I have been here in Bur Dubai 6 years-still no car-so am getting good at using public transport to get where i want!

Hi and welcome, the nearest coffee mornings to Bur Dubai area would be Festival City Wednesday, after that next nearest is Mercato Mall on Tuedays, neither of those are in your immediate area though. No knowing exactly where you are located I can only suggest you take a taxi as the metro will not take you all the way to either of those places. Hope you make it and get to know some new friends. You can also get the bus to Festival City from outside Burjuman but it takes such an indirect route round the backblocks of Karama it really isn't wrth the effort unless you have time and patience to spare

No - there used to be one at Burjuman Mall, but I think the numbers were so low that they stopped it.... Pity as there are enough of us around there to warrant one now

Hi and welcome to the nicest part of Dubai-sadly they dropped the Burjuman morning coffee a few years back-easiest one to get to from here is the Mercato one-you have to catch the bus from outside Burjuman if you don't drive and the trip takes around 20 minutes to half an hour depending on traffic.

It depends on the context. If someone had a child with a disability and they grabbed them, kissed them and told them how special they are, then that's no different to you telling your child how special they are. I find it patronising when the word 'special' is used to describe the child's physical or mental condition. I understand what you are saying BUT when someone asks the world NOT to treat them differently because of their disability, don't you think it is rather hypocritical to the ask/expect for special treatment? i.e; Don't call me x, y or z because I don't like it or don't expect me to do a full-time job in the same way as a able bodied/minded person because I have my off days? edited by Lady Luck on 12/09/2011 There is a difference between accomodating someone's particular needs so they can do a job and labelling them as special-not sure if I am explaining well but if you knew someone living with a disability it would make sense.

Sounds like the doctor has made it up in a bid for publicity. Mind you reading medical records can be revealing-was going through my extremely ill son's one day and came across a remark that I should be referred to a social worker as I was over-anxious and controlling as I had taken my then 3 year old to a surgeon's appointment in a pram rather than allowing him to walk to hospital. Now given that you have to wait hours to see the specialists and the hospital is vast together with the fact that I had to carry an oxygen cylinder and suction equipment everywhere with my son it was a practical solution. I was not impressed-and had great pleasure in asking him how he would handle a very sick toddler, oxygen cylinder and associated paraphenalia without a way of carrying it at my next visit-grrrrrrrrrr

DS hates the word special being applied to him-he is happy with the term living with a disability because it implies he is getting on with life-he also doesn't like special needs-prefers to say he has different needs. Mightn't sound much to you if you don't live with a disability but believe me the word special infuriates him-he wants to be trated like everyone else. Finding work is a whole other issue-he can get work through programmes that encourage companies to employ those like him but even when he gets something the level of understanding is not there as his is a hidden disability. If he isn't being productive he is termed lazy as his employers cannot understand his physical issues can cause him to have off days-very frustrating all around

BH was in Dubai and I was back in Aus watching a late night movie. I remember debating whether to wake the kids up-they were young teenagers-but couldn't move from the TV and couldn't quite believe it was real footage anyway. Stayed up all through the night watching the footage in disbelief. DD was set to leave for a choir trip to America the next day which she had been saving madly for-she just couldn't believe it would not be safe to travel to the US that day-it a;; seemed so unreal

I'm sure this will be deemed as a rather judgemental post but Ladies what on earth is going on here? I am taken aback with the rather laid back attitude and number of posters who have stated their children did the same. To the OP, I don't know who was babysitting your child but obviously they should not be in charge of a cardboard box let alone human life form. I would be making darn sure she never works with children again. I hope your child is ok and let this be a lesson for you. Ladies please make sure you don't let your children think vitamins are treats/sweets, they are medicines and the same respect should be given to them. Please make sure all medicines/vitamins are kept in a high cupboard with a child lock or padlock on the door. Please make sure all cleaning materials, washing powders etc are kept high and again with a child lock. Please teach your children about medicines and drugs/vitamins, teach them that only mummy is ever allowed to give them and they are NEVER allowed touch them EVER. Teach your children respect for chemicals. Don't let a basic stupid mistake like this happen, one time is one time too many and there ultimately is only one person responsible for that happening and that is you as a parent. I'm glad your children are ok, but i don't see anything funny about it or reason to be quite so laid back, your children could have died or substained serious brain damage from such lackadasical parenting. And yes i am a parent and no my children have never taken anything they shouldn't and we have a house full of medicines. The OP said the jar was on the top shelf with a child protective lock. She would hardly have been able to anticipate the stupidity of the baby sitter in advance

and would the school allow that? isn't it humiliating to the kid that he needs a dedicated teacher to sit with him all day while other kids manage stuff on their own? If they could manage on their own a shadow would not be needed. It does require sensitivity on the part of the shadow with older students but can still me managed well. I shadowed a Year 10 boy with various learning issues back in Australia and it worked really well-and to his credit he made it into university in the end.

Had the same issue orderingfrom Laura Ashley in the UK-even had a friend's address in the UK for postage who agreed to ship it on but they didn't want an Aussie credit card-emailed them dozens of times and they finally agreed to let me do it-but only once-sigh! Might be worth emailing the shop direct and asking-worked for me

was planning the big breakfast in bed for tomorrow was about to pop out to get pressie and card. and it's TODAY, argghhh. feel absolutely awful, rang and apologised and now need to make it up to him big time. especially as he made such a fuss of me for mothers day (in australia). Oppps-took DS out shopping last night-couldn't find a card so he made one but at least we got the pressie-it is hard to remember the dates here-especially when it falls on a working day

Yes it is located behind the museum adjacent to the textile market and there are shops there selling flowers, offerings and such-unsure of the times as I usually pass by at night on my wanders down the Creek but there always seems to be a lot of foot traffic in and out-I am sure one of the other ladies will know more

I have been happily using both since the metro opened in 2009 and there is virtually nowhere you cannot go-enjoy! Can you get to Dubai Festival City on the metro? No-but you can get a bus there from Khalid bin al Whalid Station or Deira Station straight there

First baby got stuck in the birth canal-ridiculously long labour-difficult forceps delivery which resulted in daughter having blood on the back of her brain-the doctor still uses it in lectures as an example of worst possible natural birth-only good thing was the epidural-second one was breech at 26 weeks-very quick but no pain relief as the baby was in distress-not cheering you up am I-so I guess the second was quicker but more painful in spite of the baby's size-and the stress because we knew something was wrong with him-on the plus side once labour starts you do forget what happened first tie round thank goodness! Mind you I would never have gone back for a third!

Yes, you are right. Metro stopped in Business buy and they put on all the passengers in a bus which did all the loop around Dubai Mall. My husband asked the bus driver "are you going to stop in WTC metro station" and the bus driver said "yes sir". TBH, my husband was late for work and the bus driver lied to him.... I see everyday buses stopping in SZR to pick up people I don't really think all of these bus drivers are in danger to loose their jobs! I guess it depends if it is a designated stop-I guess if the driver was so reluctant to stop he felt there would be some consequences-when buses run instead of the Metro they usually stop behind WTC after doing another loop so he may have ended up there eventually if he hadn't hopped off

Do you mean the buses or the metro-there are no drivers on the metro and it can't go in a loop! I feel sorry for the bus driver-granted your BH was annoyed-but the poor bus driver could lose his job for stopping at an undesignated stop-would you want that? Oh and I think the green line is opening on the 9th not the 3rd-unless they have changed the date

Try Toad Hall Guest house 10 mins walk from centre of town or there is a premer Inn right in the centre of town but that may be booked up for Jane Austen festival. The festival is big and people come from all over the world for it. Thanks will Google both-bad timing on my part!

Yes I trawled through a few to see if it would jog my memory but the prices!!! 140 pounds etc...all these b and Bs have gone "boutique crazy"! I know-all organic breakfasts and such-all I want is a good central place-somewhere to lay my head and a nice big breakfast so I don't have to buy DS food half an hour later!

Hay on Wye in the Brecon Beacons is lovely for walking (think there might be fishing too) and it's not too far from Gloucester Will google it and see if it is do-able on public transport-fishing is out though-he won't kill anything!

Hi Wuffles, I haven't been to Bath but would love to, as I hear it is really beautiful and interesting. We lived in London for a while and one weekend we did a trip to Chester for a weekend and it was lovely! Charming little town and a lovely cathedral, very pretty outskirts and we had a fun dinner at a true local English pub. We also did a day trip to climb a mountain - it was a big hill really! The views towards the Welsh mountians were beautiful. I will try to remember the name of the mountain and will post if I do! If you have done Oxford I would try something differeent... have fun whatever you decide:) Thanks for that-I am getting cross-eyed looking at National Express and bus timetables at the minute-Bath seemed to have good options for day trips which is why it appealed at first glance but my friend raves about Chester

Wuffles, I'm sorry if this sounds rude, but from what you are saying, I'm not sure if you've looked at a map? Wales (and Bath) is much nearer to Gloucester than Chester, which is over 100 miles to the north of Gloucester, whilst London is less than 100 miles to the south-east of Gloucester. Bath is a beautiful place and Bristol, just down the road, is also gorgeous, particularly the Clifton (university) area. I still think, if you want somewhere to stay for two nights, on the way to Gloucester from London using public transport, Oxford is the best place - loads of interesting walks, lovely river banks, punting :) Of course I have looked on a map!-and yes Wales in nearer Gloucester-I only thought of Chester as I have friends there-wasn't thinking it was particularly suitable this time round-but I was looking for somewhere between Gloucester and London on the way back-rather than travelling further afield-much as we would like to. Have been to Oxford-was trying to come up with somewhere new and do-able but if all else fails Oxford might work

Thats why its best to go to a reputed travel agency. Its small operators who try and get away with this kind of wrong information. It wa one of the biggest ones in Aus-never had any issues before-I think the guy he was dealing with was very new and green though

Good grief, I hadn't realized the train and bus services in England had deteriorated so badly :) I would think Oxford would be the obvious choice, or go to one of the lovely Cotswold villages like Broadway or Burford? Or else take a little detour into Welsh Wales? Thanks-didn't think the buses are train services were bad-a tad expensive but otherwise OK. Trying to keep to a budget so Wales might be a bit much maybe as we need to get back to Heathrow at some point!

Sounds like he had a lovely farewell- when we were little my dad told us the cat's heaven was on the moon. I can vividly remember sitting in class glued to the TV set watching the first moon landing-everyone else was focused on that first historic step-I was searching the moon's surface for my old cat Snowy-dad had a lot of explaining to do that night.......
