I'm trying to be polite about that but really those things are old hat to many people who have lived here a while. I feel that this is always thrown up everytime someone says they have an issue with Dubai - it's always suggested that those people are sitting out in New Dubai and they don't have the feel for the place - go down by the Creek etc etc as if they have never done it.Personally many of those places actually make me feel worse about Dubai. I am not saying I hate it in Dubai btw but I am saying that a shawarma isn't the be all and end all and i really don't mean to be rude in saying that. Sorry in advance if it comes across as that. Everyone is different-but after 6 years Creekside I don't feel it is "old hat'-I enjoy it for what it is and actually miss that sense of community when I head home to the suburbs in Aus. It isn't the shawarmas-can't recall ever having one down there-there are better things to eat-but more the vibrancy of life down there-especially after dark

Quickly...... no, not all parts of UAE heritage etc are fabricated. Spend a lot of time, outdoors, in Bur Dubai, Karama, Satwa, the Creek - you'll see things, smell things, feel things about the place that you didn't know existed. Have a seat, have a shwarma, watch the world go by, literally. Watch the corners of the globe come together in one street, living, working together in harmony. Spend lots of time on abras, wandering streets, doesn't have to be in the set tourist areas, wander round the older areas, it costs nothing and you'll gain so much from it. And absolutely this is a place for people to speak in supermarket queues! of anywhere in the world, this is a place where people are flung together and forced to make friends or be lonely - everyone has been new here, nobody will think you odd for striking up a conversation! just do it... leave your comfort zone, make friends with people outside of your own culture/religion - take advantage of the 219 (?) nationalities we have here and learn what you can about your neighbours. Join their festivities, Diwali, Eid, Christmas - celebrate with them and watch them celebrate in return with you. Try to spend longer here. Yes, the summers are hot, the days are long, but while you are here, this is your home - try to see it as that and make the most of everything you can while you are here. Here endeth the lesson. :) ETA it is horrible to be somewhere where you feel you don't belong/are not happy - hope things improve for you all. edited by Burnt Marshmallows on 26/08/2011 Well said :) Those are the places I too spend my days and nights

I think I feel the opposite-love seeing the grown-up kids of course but there is always so much to do at home-the house always needs something done and the garden is a jungle-friends all want to catch up but most don't till the last few days when you are frantically trying to get things done, food and petrol seem to cost so much more etc......

So sorry to hear about Sammy-sounds like it was for the best but it is such a hard decision-we had to do the same for our son's beloved Burmese cat last year after she was bitten by a spider-he stayed with her while the vet did it-we still miss her like crazy

Can't believe they didn't confiscate the gun too-I think most countries would ban replica weapons coming in-certainly would never think of bringing something like this in-mind you I wouldn't have bought-or let my son buy weapons either. Sorry you had a hard time but it isn't really surprising is it? Not sure what country you came home from but how would they have reacted if you had brought a toy gun and bullets in in your luggage?-just a thought <em>edited by wuffles on 23/08/2011</em>

Went to Wafi Gourmet today in Dubai mall. Wonderful!! 120/person nice view of the fountain and most importantly the food was great! As for al hallab. I think it's a good restaurant that is, for the most part, over rated. We went to Wafi Gourmet too last night-had a front window view of the fountains which our guests loved-agree the food was excellent-only regret was that I couldn't fit more in!!!! <em>edited by wuffles on 20/08/2011</em>

Do it of a morning. There is a western woman and more recently a man who've been running around the horse yard for years - it's a local neighbourhood so they stand out, but no one minds and they look happy and relaxed. Thanks-I certainly don't intend to run mind you!!!!!

Waffles, it would take a while to walk there but you can walk along the road to the private front gate, there are peacocks everywhere, I drove past the other day and the peacocks tails were open which I'd never seen before and it was breathtaking. The gate is nice with the horses, too. You'd just walk from Emirates Tower, cross the road, you'll eventually walk past the horse training field, take a right, walk to the end when you'll have the Zabeel club in front of you, take a left, walk to the end of the new road, at the end will be the road with peacocks, look right and you'll see the palace. Thanks for the info-I often walk 4 hours at a time when it is cooler so will venture down there once it cools down

1. Nasser square, walk to Rigga - it's a cultural experience 2. Hatta on a Friday arvo 3. Drive through Zabeel (to see the palace, peacocks, horse hospital etc.) 4. Satwa, waste money buying junk that is so cheap but exciting for some reason - and material - then take your material and a photo of something you want made to a tailor there and have it photocopied 5. Spice Island buffet dinner 6. Go to co-op, have them cook meat/chicken BBQ with all the sides, get some drinks and eat a BBQ dinner on the beach (for practically nothing) 7. Catch an abra to the spice market 8. Visit the small malls that used to be something and see why ppl liked them, Mezaya, many in Deira, Mercato is one these days, Beach Centre 9. Go to a bakery, like Moulin or Al Reef in the middle of the night for seriously fresh and good food then go to a cafeteria for juices 10. Gold souk then find a schwarma place or backtrack your walk to find Popeyes chicken in Deira This is not a modern list, this is a list that will be culturally interesting. 11. Walk along the Dubai Creek, from NDD/Sheraton towards Hyatt - do it at 2pm when nothing is open ow close to the palace can you get?-no car so I would go on foot

Walking all the way along and under the Creek on both sides I dirham Abra rides from the spice to textile market at night Water taxi rides-only 4dhs and you usually get them to yourself Visiting the placid camel by the Bastakiya All the galleries and museums in and around the Bastakiya Meena Bazaar to look at the most amazing saris and buy fresh bread from the street ovens Wafi's underground Khan Murjhan-and their Sound and Light Show Wafu Gourmet-visitors love the food displays as well as the food Walking along Jumeirah beaches alone early in the morning Fida in Satwa-and exploring the back streets of Satwa Dubai Fountains Karama at night-for inexpensive restaurants and fun bartering Global Village Winter shopping festival and cultural displays along the Creek OK-it is only once a year but National Day along the Creek is amazing Fireworks-for any and every excuse The Creek-Bur Dubai side during Diwali for local colour, fireworks and an amazing ambiance

i have an excellent filing cabinet in the kitchen - 2 ft high with a swing lid.... AKA File 13. This is my favourite one. You reminded me when I had my very first job my boss would hand me things for the circular file-being shy I didn't like to tell him I couldn't find it so I set up a new file and was surprised at the variety of things he gave me for it-it wasn't till years later after i left the job that the penny dropped and I realised he was referring to the rubbish bin-no doubt still to this day there is a huge file in the Australian Ministry of Health neatly archved under Circular File.....:( LOL!!! I can image someone finding it , going through thinking "what the ****!!" :) Given the ridiculous amount of Paper Work generated by the Publc Service I suspect it is still filed away where I left it-hopefully without my name or initials on-still cringe when I think about my stupidity!..........

I am doing some practise packs now and after getting rid of so much stuff already think still about 10kg over in total! may have to consider...:( It might ne worth it-especially as people tend to give farewell gifts and you will need a small corner for those-plus you always seem to end up buying a few things at duty free-I do anyway!

My super organised daughter bought a receipts file from Kikki K-think there is one at Dubai Mall-she also bought a bills organiser and one for appliance brochures and warranties-and a wedding planner etc-loves their stuff! Not sure what the range is like here but worth a look hee hee, she sounds EXACTLY like my sister :) Mmm-sometimes think I bought the wrong baby home from hospital!

wuffles, I transfer it all online so no idea of the exact rate it will transfer at when cash hits account. I check it against the rate for that day but biiiiig difference this time! Have you experienced better rates for larger amounts before? Yes-but through an exchange house where you negotiate for a better rate-and get a receipt to confirm the rate-doubt it would be as big as you mention

Didn't you get a slip with the rate at the time of the transaction?-check that to see what has happened-you probably were gven a better rate for a bigger transfer-but not that good!

Husband lived here for 20 years, so we are Americans who speak arabic (kids speak English only)... but lookign forward to meet som FUN TO BE AROUND people.... ITS NUMBER 1 Requirments for me..oh and it will be nice if they have kids... yep - SOH essential lol !! plenty of coffee mornings and other social opportunities once you get settled... Speaking of which I do bring coffee (instant) from home-weird that I can't find better tasting coffee in the Middle East than Australia but there you go-and tinned beetroot-the stuff here is horrid

Ok.. guys guys guys.. let me rephrase the question... what you really wished you brought with you from back home THAT CAN SURVIVE IN A 40 FT CLOSED CONTAINER FOR 2 MONTHS.. WHITH NO AIR OR WATER???.. :) lol... not to mention sitting around the docks in 40+ degrees heat for however long...!! So that excludes favourite pets and relatives then.... Mmm-might be willing to risk the MIL then-but not the cat!

wuffles; his wing is fine..he lost a lot of feathers, but it'll be fine...his right foot had some minor nerve damage, which the doc said will recover fast...also just where his tail starts there was a fairly raw scratch but that too will be ok...he was just badly roughed up, but no permanent harm was done...the only danger at this point is if he never gets over his shock, as that can kill birds...but he seemed alright...he's improving, which is a good sign....and he's been asleep all day....Thanks again everyone :)))) That's great news then

Going on vacations/trips etc with friends & other family members is perfectly fine. But going 'alone' to watch a football match sounds fishy. Personally, if this had happened to me (and i have a very healthy relationship with my OH), i would suspect that he is going with another lady or meeting one in Spain... im just voicing my personal feeling... Really? Such a thought wouldn't even cross my mind

Just be aware that the Book Depository prices seem to be outrageous, so technically you are actually paying for the 'free' shipping. I've just purchased two cookbooks from Amazon, the Amazon price of one book is twice at the BD and the other book at BD is THREE times more expensive than buying through Amazon. I haven't found them outrageous and they regularly have offers like 10% off-or 15% off everything in your wishlish so you can always wait for those-I compare with Amazon but so far so good

I wouldn't-they will know it is a different fish-and you might kill it again anyway if you aren't looking after it correctly. Maybe buy a voucher from a pet shop and leave it to them to select a new fish-you never know they might be secretly relieved it has died and they don't need to worry about organising someone to mind it when they go away
