Hugs to you-I lost my auntie around this time last year-only a week after I returned home to visit her-she took the place of my mum after she died of cancer and I still miss her like crazy. I used to Skype her everyday from here-she was in a nursing home and I was often the only voice she heard all day-apart from the staff-even now when 2pm comes round I feel I should be phoning her. It does get easier though I promise. Grandmothers are wonderful-so non judgemental with all the time in the world to listen-it is no wonder you miss her-take time to grieve but also to remember all the wonderful things that made her who she was-she will always be a part of you xxx

Are they huge boxes?-Emirates surface mail is cheap enough and we have shipped many large boxes back to Australia over the years-just keep under the maximum weight level (which I can't recall at the minute-sorry)-there is a postage calculator on Emirates Post site though

To CRX2 and wuffles I have had a bit of exposure with special needs children on a vounteer basis,and can honestly say they touched my heart in such a way that no other has. My heart aches for the plight of those with special needs who just want to fit in with others of their own age. I can only imagine how hard it can be for the whole family, especially moms as we instinctively just want to protect our children, I commend you both.As CRx2 said hopefully society will become more and more accepting in the future. There is a reason we use the term SPECIAL needs, it is because they are SPECIAL. On the contrary, I disagree with the term 'special'. Some people have 'different' needs and I think this is a fairer description because in my opinion everyone is special in their own way edited by manufan on 09/08/2011 To be honest DS hates being called special-it gets him quite worked up-also hates the label disabled-prefers to be thought of as someone living with a disability (if he needs to defne his condition for work etc)

Oh Wuffles it's true these children are really special in their own ways, often showing great empathy for other like my little one - it's hard tho when they excluded by their peers without really knowing the reasons why. Mine has discovered playing with children half her age means they don't pick up on her problems and she feels comfortable - I don't know what will happen in the next 10, 20, 30 years - hopefully society will become more & more accepting ... Oddly-I think DS feels happiest with old people-they accept him as he is without question. His peers often see him as lazy which infuriates him (but you try putting in a full day's work after 3 days of no sleep and hardly any food!)-he is highly intelligent which in some ways makes his limitations even more frustrating to him.

Thanks wuffles. Was made redundant so made the choice to leave easier! was planning on leaving a month later anyways so timing hasnt been so bad. Just working way through the bucket list now although in ramadan when 500 degrees outside and saving $ options are limited. Fingers crossed for all Aussies and some relief in their cash flow!!! x Good luck getting the bucket list done-and finding work back home too

I am watching like a hawk! am actually leaving for good in a few weeks and risked having to send all money at worst exchange rate known to man so this is fantastic news for me and my hard earned savings! Interest rates dropping also which is good news for those with mortgages. After a long stint of an overvalued dollar things are starting to look better for the aussie expats here!:) Fingers crossed for an excellent rate for you then-we have been debating leaving as the rate has been so bad-trouble is apart from that we are happy here

Ours goes home on the first of the month when BH gets paid-last month's rate was horrendous-sadly no extra to send so will wait and see-we are efectively earning about half of what we used to when we first came so fingers crossed the drop continues

I have read the book-bought up some interesting issues-Oprah did a show sometime back asking parents of severely disabled the same question-very moving and a bit close to home. I am against abortion so before my DS was born would not have entertained the thought.He spent his first 2 years in hospital -at the time his sister was 16 months old and had never been left alone without me for a day.He has a very rare syndrome but to outsders looks pretty normal. Children with this sort of hidden disability have a very tough road to follow as they get no special consideration from those who don't know them-and even those who do tend to forget how tough life can be. DS can eat very little and often only sleeps 2 hours a night so his concentration is negligable-even though his teachers knew his background there patience wore thin and gave DS a rotten time. His friends often exclude him-especially from parties where food is involved.There have been many times he himself has questioned whether he was better off surviving-and e still has intemittent treatment for depression. He is a beautiful person with incredible empathy for others and has just completed a degree in Social and Community Welfare. He spent 6 months working on a voluntary breakfast programme working with the homeless and loved it. However due to his health issues he may never work full time and is entering the stage where friends are marrying and he obviously sn't seen as very "marketable' as husband material-a fact he is just realising. Would I have had him knowing what I do-yes-does he agree?-at 23 the jury is still out.

No I live in AR and need to go to Dubai Mall. I don't think there is bus that can take me there without having to change over a lot which in this heat I don't want to do, also I just want to run in and out. Anyway I have to agree with you, my chances are slim. However I think I am going to point out the extra costs to them. This at least will give me the feeling that I've done something rather then just smile politely and say: 'It's okay'. Sorry-live out the other side of Dubai so can't advise on bus routes-the bus to the mall does connect to the metro though-have you checked if the store has a branch closer to you?

Hi wuffles. Maybe that didn't come out right. There are three partners in the business, none of whom have experience. I have the experience, the formal training and the knowledge in many aspects of the business. I had completed all of the formal parts, and we were going to discuss the training, SOP's, do's and don'ts etc after all of these documents were completed. I don't want to say what the business is, but I'll use a restaurant as an example. Let's say I have the background in restaurants and the three partners don't. I have created a menu, decided on opening hours, madde up a list of equipment and supplies with pricing and sourcing, decided on the number of employees, the training on all of the items, the service standards, the training schedule. I've also made suggestions on uniforms, laundry, grooming standards, how to greet the customers, how to serve them from the moment they walk in to the end of their experience, how to get repeat business, upselling, on and on. When I say I held back, it wan't in the sense of suggesting that they serve steak, chicken, but no fish. Not like that. When I say I held back, it was on topics that we were going to discuss in the next couple of weeks. It was information that I had gained from a business owner here regarding some very good suggestions on how to make our business unique and to stand out from all the others. The business that we are dealing in is extremely competitive, much like the restaurant business. Sue R, that's what I'm telling myself now. I'm having to swallow my pride and write it off as you've said. The positive side of this is that I've learned a lot and I came up with some great ideas for when I open my own business in this field. Fair enough-hopefully they will realise they need more of your expertise-and will pay properly for it in the future

There is also one near Carrefour at Deira. They want clothes, shoes, glasses (spectacles), books and mobile phones-the theme is see, hear, think, feel. You can pick up empty clothing donation bags and take them home to fill up and drop back in-I am up to my 6th already! It is being organised by Red Crescent. Ours offered a miserly 3000 dhs in total for 2 children per year-as the salary wasn't wonderful I stayed in Australia till our 2 finished their education while BH moved here-we couldn't have made the move otherwise. You will need to do your sums carefully-not forgetting to factor in the costs of extra-curricular activities as well

Dubai Mall Food court area (near cinema) Are you sure about this one ? I was there today, and after researches and asking to several shop attendants and information desks, they all said that all the food courts are take away only, and we didn't find any where we were allowed to eat on site. One also said that there is a cafe in Waitrose where we can eat in. Someone to confirm ? There are signs up on the tables in the food court opposite the cinemas at Dubai Mall that eating is not permitted until the call to prayer sounds-and they are enforcing it I have been to Waitrose many times and have never seen a cafe?! edited by Rebecca W on 04/08/2011

There's a good reason why bathrooms don't have electrical sockets, apart from enclosed shaver ones that is - water and electricity don't like each other ! Contact between them could prove to be fatal if you were holding a hairdryer or any other electrical appliance. They certainly have electric sockets in Australian bathrooms

I put ours on about 10 minutes before BH arrives home in case he has had a hot taxi ride home-then turn it off within 10 minutes of his being home-we are lucky-our building is lovely and cool and that is the most we have had to use it in the 6 years we have been here <em>edited by wuffles on 20/07/2011</em>

The guide is if you are quilting in a grid design- (I have never used mine-grid patterns are rather boring anyway!)-if she wants to do this she can just rule light pencil or chalk lines on the fabric (depending if it is light or dark) instead and use these as a guide-the quarter inch foot is handy but you can also put a thick piece of tape along the sewing machine plate to act as a guide-and the stitch plate itself should have the quarter inch marked. The walking food helps you quilt evenly through the batting-if she uses a thin batting she may well manage without it. See how she goes with the basic machine before you worry too much about accessories

It will probably be cheaper to source one through eBay-there are different walking feet for different machines and some can be quite expensive-I bought a cheap Toyota quiltmaster sewing machine at Carrefour that came complete with these accessories to save me tracking them down later

She may just not like the piano-I had my daughter taught at around the same age by a teacher she just adored (her choir teacher actually) and she just did not enjoy it. Her lessons were fun and well planned and the teacher rewarded her for practising. That being said she went on the play clarinet, oboe, trombone,bagpipes, cello, viola and also the flute, piccolo and bassoon-the last 3 to professional orchestra standards winning 3 different university music scholarships--at the ripe old age of 24 she still doesn't like the piano-to play or listen to!

I know about HECS etc but it still has to be paid once you start earning-or if it is a second degree I think also-so not exactly free-just a deferred payment
