Welcome Angela-I am in Bur Dubai too and there is plenty to see and do-I often go down the Creek at night for walks-just dress conservatively or you will get looked at-otherwise it is fine for a woman alone-you can watch the dinner dhows, visit the bastikia area-bargain in the textile markets-take the 1 dh abra across to the gold and spice markets-I do all this at night with no problems. Also take a walk in the opposite direction down to Karama-home of the genune fake handbags and other things. You can eat in some wonderful streetside Indian and Arabic restaurants and watch the world pass by. I am sure there are people way closer to your age than I am to show you round!

Oh JoyceB, I was smiling away at your little snippet below until I got to the last part where I burst out laughing, DD now wondering what I am laughing at. I have never had a problem with people about not working. I do jokingly like to refer to myself myself as Chief Executive of the household. If someone seemed to be demeaning about me not working I would just say that I am my own boss, and do what I want, when I want. :) Glad you put a link to this wuffles and I am always up for a cup of coffee and a chat. :) :)

There are quite a few more I could name but as she wants a view of the fountains or some such you are a bit more limited for choice-some with belly dancers etc-but I have yet to see an authentic Lebanese belly dancer here-mostly seem to be Russians-go figure!

Wafi Gourmet is nice-especiallly their home cooked selection which varies from night to night-the one at Dubai Mall overlooks the fountains but the food and service is better at either Festival City-or Wafi-personally I prefer Wafi City-and you have the sound and light show to watch there too.

I only did the diet, but as I worked at a vets, I had regular blood tests done to monitor the kidneys and they seemed quite stable so there was no need for anything additional. Thanks-the cat loves the diet food-guess that is a plus!

She can buy the fluids from a human pharmacy, its about 8dhs for 500ml. Admittedly the special food is more expensive, but she will only need a small amout per day, so a bag should last about a month. (works out about 3-5dhs a day. :) I fully sympathize as my was diagnosed with renal failure when she was 9, she had regular blood checks, and was on a renal diet, but eventually died at the age of 12 :( Did you do the injections too-or just the special diet?

I would definitly give it a go, then if she does get progressivly worse, she will know she has done what she can. Unfortunately kidney damage doesnt always show up in blood tests untill they are more that 75% damaged, and once the damage is done, there is no going back. These days though there are plenty of kidney support foods for cats, and together with the fluids, I dont see why she shouldnt lead a normal life. Thanks-won't they still fail though-just take a bit longer? Yes, they will still fail, but the fluids will help flush the toxins from the body. The SC fluids are not really going to uncomfortably prolong her life, but it will help her be more comfortable. There will come a point when even the fluids dont help, and she will have to make that terrible decision, but until then...its worth a try :) edited by Sabrina H on 13/07/2011 Thanks-guess there is the question of the expense of the treatment too

wuffles...........sorry to say this but kidney failure and elderly cats is not a good combination. Yes, your poor friend can try the vets options, but in all total honesty.........and I say this as a devoted mad cat lady , she needs to let her beloved friend go in peace. Sending hugs x. Thanks-I am inclined to agree (and I love my cats dearly) but don't want to influence her-I cat sit for her so I am trying to get some balanced ideas-not easy to know what to do

IV fluids or SQ? Are they asking her to administer the fluids under the skin? If it were my cat no question, I would do the fluids. I understand the "process" may seem a bit intimidating if she's never done it before. Is it that she's a bit nervous perhaps about the needle etc? If it's SQ fluids there will of course be a poke when the needle goes in and there will be a bit of a lump under the skin until the fluids absorb. But other than that, there should be no unpleasantness for the cat involved. If she doesn't do the fluids it may not be too long, depending on how bad the cat's kidneys are, before toxins start building up in the cat's system - and then the kitty WILL be feeling poorly. Sorry Laura-meant SQ-the vet didn't really give much indication how much difference it would make timewise which makes the decision harder-I don't think it is the process she minds-just questioning whether prolonging the inevitable is a kindness

Surely she should discuss all the options with the vet and go on his opinion..... She has of course. The vet is in favour of fluids-but they won't be the ones administering it-guess the question is how far should you go to lengthen the cat's life-the condition is not curable

A friend has a cat that has been diagnosed in the early stages of renal failure. The vet has advised her to give it extra fluid by injection 3 times a week at home-which my friend is reluctant to do as she feels it is an uncomfortable way to prolong the cat's life-she is also planning to return home within the year. The cat is around 12 and seems to be in no pain or discomfort-would you start the treatment to prolong the cat's life-let it live untreated while it is pain free-or.....? She is really confused as she wants to do what is best for her beloved street cat <em>edited by wuffles on 13/07/2011</em>

There are 2 left in Dubai - Festival City and Jumeirah - I worked at Jumeirah until they 'let me go' last week :( So sorry RL, not good :( I've been told that Magrudy's got deals on rent as the new malls were built but when the deal periods expired and the rents were going up, they had to move out - if it's right then Festival City would be due to close at some point. I don't think Magrudy's were helped by their locations in the malls, not one was in an area with high footfall and there's not a great deal of money in books anyway. The Deira one was in a great location-right next to the Metro station-and was always busy too-I miss that branch

Sorry to hear you didn't get a say-at least your cat isn't too far away when you vsit your parents and you still have your cousin as a back-up if things don't work out. Oh and don't laugh at the idea of cats on leashes-our Burmese cat loved hers and lorded it over all the neighbourhood dogs when we took her out for walks! She would actually fetch her lead and harness when she wanted a walk-mind you I always felt a bit odd talking her out as she attracted loads of attention

You can buy brass weighing scales at most corner supermarkets-certainly the ones in Bur Dubai-and they are surprisingly accurate for such a cheap gizmo. Perhaps ACE has them too.

Thanks :D Unfortunately the buss is not an option, because my DS is 2,5 and I need to drop him at the daycare. I need to be little more flexible than the buss :) You couldn't do that with a car lift either though-can you delay the new job until you get your licence-isn't your boss aware of the issue?

Oh-something else I discovered with Book Depository is that you can order books in other languages-so when I want my French fix I have been able to order French books-same free postage-not sure of the range or languages but it is handy if you like reading in other languages

Just ordered. they are much quicker on delivery and i'm super impatient. plust i did notice one of the books was cheaper... so maybe it is just the books i ordered. will check over a few orders! thanks ladies! also wuffles thanks for the sign up wish list tip. not seen any in dubai... sorry... they have just Mickey Mouse Clubhouse wall stickers in Babyshop stores and various stores in Dragon Mart... they even have full wallpapers in Dragonmart for the same theme... but never seen any borders... u could buy online... http://www.ukwallpaper.co.uk/products/mickey-mouse.htm even amazon have them I have seen those, and surprisingly I couldn't find any borders though. Amazon don't ship to UAE!!! So, I don't know. Maybe somebody else have seen them somewhere? Hopefully :) On EBay-as per link on my last post-and they do post to Dubai

I prefer Book Depository-they post very quickly and as soon as they souce the books-this may mean you order 4 books and get 4 parcels on different days-you don't wait for the last one to come in. Also sign up and you get regular offers like 15% off all books in your wish list-so make sure you have books in there-you can add to it during sales-or 10% off offers at other times.I was also found they are better at filling pre-orders than Amazon. I did hear somewhere that Amazon has bought them out so they must be doing something right.

I landed recently late at night and the duty free stores were open as you walk through immigration. I remember seeing a mobile phone there for 49.95 free from contract so I bet they sold the sim cards there too. The BP petrol station is 24 hours Good point-I was thinking of the stores after you go through customs

I returned to Australia from Dubai in May after 2 years. In my opinion costs are on par with the exception of public schooling which is government run and low cost therefore much cheaper and cars and petrol which are more expensive. Depending on the lifestyle you crave Australia can offer you more or less than the UAE. It depends strongly on what is important to you. I must add that I stand polar opposite to siennachick on private health insurance as I have found the company and policy we run to be both cost effective and excellent coverage. If you can indicate where in Australia you looking, as costs vary from state to state, I am happy to post any current cost of living information I have. Have to say I agree about the private health insurance-we have even left ours running while over here so we have the option of heading home for medical treatment and skipping the wait lists

Been here for a few weeks and just saw a post for shop and ship. Went to the website, but still can't figure how it works. I understand you pay a fee then order from somewhere then it gets sent here, but how does the ordering process work? Is there a specific list of stores and once you go to the store site, is there a shop and ship option? I am a regular amazon.com customer and I have never seen that as an option. I almost ordered something through them a few days ago and the shipping cost was nuts! It was more than what I wanted to purchase! What is the best way to order online and have it shipped here? I find it more expensive back in Australia-the petrol is a killer and I find food and utilities-especially electricity more expensive-the only reason we would more back now (apart from family issues) is to get a job that has superannuation so we could have some money for retirement. We earn about the same as we did in Australia but having mo super makes it effectively less-also the exchange rate is jusst horrible for expats who have to send money home

Depends how well you travel-it is quite a short flight and I would sleep all the way anyway-so I personally wouldn't bother-save the money for shops and restaurants
