No worries Wuffles. I checked out the EM flights from here and then back to home and way more expensive compared to Qatar! The dates I am putting in must be different-as long as you make it home safely that is all that matters anyway

Just been looking at EK for flights to LHR in August and actually found some good deals if you aren't too bothered by flight times. I just checked the Birmingham ones and Emirates were the cheapest-odd....

Thanks Wuffles DS wasn't impressed as we have to fly to Doha first but then again, he isn't paying for the flights!!!! Doh! Qatar Airways were the cheapest after Gulf Air (but there was no availability), about more than half of the price of other airlines!!!! You either rent a post box or more commonly have it sent via your work. There was some talk of a paid home delivery service but not sure if it has started-or ever will Whether you can rent a post box near to you depends on availability so you may be better off getting things redirected to your husband's work at least initially

I think I'll try the Basta Art Cafe and forgo the street stalls - whereas DH has a cast iron stomach, mine is more like fine porcelain! So, I'll get dropped off around the cafe, take an abra over the creek, take the underground footpath, go to spice souk, then gold souk. You two rock! Thanks again for all the info - I'm really excited about my date now! Just use the abras at night-the underground path is a long way along the Creek and a bit isolated at night-enjoy!

... was today. He is 25months old. He stayed for all of 1 hr and then i had to get him cos he was crying a lot. I go thru so much trauma putting him to sleep (if u have read my previous sleep thread u wud know).. and yet, he fell asleep in the CAR at 10:30am!!!!!! I am thinking he must've been so upset with being at playschool.. and it dint help i guess that there were other kids crying also. Think tomorrow will be better? :( I am sure it will-he may not have slept because he was upset but because he had so much new information to absorb-don't be so hard on yourself-hugs xx

I always wanted to try Basta Art cafe, it has very good reviews on Trip Advisor (check them out), pictures look pretty: little garden, great salads and juices. Maybe Wuffles knows the place? Sorry-looks nice but I am too cheap!!!-always grab some Indian or Arabic takeaway off the street stalls and get fresh squeezed juice in the Textile souk-never tried a real restaurant down there-think the entertainment book has vouchers for some though so take a look I had some street food on the textile souk- indian chilli bhajis or something like that. 2DHS for a bag:O That was the cheapest and probably most unhygienic food i ever had, but i survived and enjoyed it:) Doing things like that makes me feel like i`m on some exotic vacation and out of 'plastic DXB'... Bonus: I also haggled to get 2 pashminas:) They have yummy potato ones too-no idea what they are called-I figure the deep frying must kill off the germs-hasn't done me any harm and I have been nibbling them the last 6 years in my regular wanderings down there

And now definitely taking a taxi - what's the best place to tell him to drop us if we want to go to eat first (sounds like Bastika is good?) and then take an abra across? I wouldn't mind doing the textile souk, but I may have to leave that for another day with better weather. Thanks for all your help - if I get it sorted DH may be in a good enough mood to spring for a bauble... Depends if you want to eat first! Get dropped off on the Bur Dubai side-if you don't mind walking get off around the British Consulate so you can walk past all the dinner dhows-keep walking keeping the Creek on your right-then when you reach the mosque fence turn left and the Bastakia-and restaurant is there-and perhaps the camel if it isn't too late! If you are lazy ask to be dropped off at the museum and walk through to the Creek and restuarants-you will need to catch a 1dh abra across to the gold souk-but you pass the spice souk first on the Deira side which is good as it closes first-use the underground footpath after you leave the abra-the spice souk is straight ahead then-safer than crossing the road too

You can also take an abra across the Creek to visit the textile markets and Bastakia-or start from that side-some nice restaurants on the Bur Dubai side depending on your budget-haven't tried any lately as I usually eat the street stall foods-so will leave others to recommend those.Make sure you have 1 dh coins for the abras as they guys don't really do change! edited by wuffles on 04/07/2011 I agree, nice restaurants are on the Bur Dubai side. We did this once as a whole day trip. After the gold and spice souks took an abra to textile souk and Bastakia, both places are very lively, i found them to be more enjoyable than the gold souk, easier to locate the food too:) The whole experience was great, a lot of fun! I will do it again once the weather gets little better... It is good to do on a day other than Friday too so you can visit Meena Bazaar and all the museums-not all are open Fridays-you can visit the Museum/Diving and Heritage Villages/Sheikh's House/Architectural Museum/even the Horse and Camel Musuems if you know where to look! If you are energetic you can also walk under the Creek via the underground footpatn-or be lazy and take the 4 dh water taxis or even hire your own abra for an hour or so

DH says he wants to see the old gold souk - which I am very happy to show to him! We're going to go on a Friday night and make a date of it (we don't get out much). Can anyone recommend a casual restaurant in the vicinity of the souks to grab a bite? Also, is it better to take a taxi or drive? Any other suggestions of what is around there that we shouldn't miss? Is the spice souk close enough to take a walk around as well? Many TIA for doing my date planning for me! Taxi!!! You will never find the parking on Friday, that place is packed! We circled the parking lot for 2 hours.. Food: it will probably be cafeteria, some run-down place, Hyatt Regency is nearby in case if you feel like celebrating the purchase:) Bastakia Nights might be OK-haven't tried it-just like visiting the camel 'parked' outside! I always walk down-the traffic is crazy!

Dumb bloomin' rabbit was out all afternoon and all night. Still refusing to come in. Think its ok for him this time of year? Wouldn't think so-are you sure he hasn't got heat stroke and doesn't know what is good for him?!

How lovely, you must be feeling really proud! Surprised as much as anything-can't imagine learning to do the spilts and flying through the air at 24 for the first time-probably just as well I wasn't there to see her land on top of the pyramid-watching her do Scottish and Irish dancing comps was much easier on the nerves!

I looked in C4 and Geant, none so far :-( Yuliya, well if u read the cooking instructions on the pack it says, to add water...but the proper way of doing it, is to steam the couscous on the top part of the "coucoussier" (the couscous pan), and make the sauce in the lower part vegetable+meat/chicken... I only have french receipe, but I can translate that or look for english ones if u like I think I bought the last one but will check the next time I am in there for you in case they have restocked

that is a lovely idea Wuffles, but we are going to meet them in Europe. I thought about a necklace with her name in Arabic, but I think I've left it too late :( The stall in Mercato makes them up within 2 weeks-perhaps more quickly if you ask-they have a nice variety of shapes too-otherwise perhaps she would like one of those colourful painted name posters for her bedroom made up with Dubai icons-you see them at Ibn Battuta, Dubai Mall and the Madinat

This thread just brings it home: Dubai is [i'>so[/i'> much more than the Burj Khalifa and the Malls. All the best to you Claire, I hope you get the chance to farewell Dubai and all its facets... Very true-I would be quite happy to never leave the old area of Dubai we live in (except to buy a red velvet cupcake and see the fountains at Dubai Mall)-as long as I am close enough to walk to the Creek at night I am content

It's dusty and busy on the roads, Terminal 3 at Dubai airport is heaving - I just dropped some friends off and I was glad to walk back in through my front door, and it's my birthday today :) Happy Birthday Cornish Pixie-hope you have something nice planned to celebrate tonight

Hi, We'll be going home for summer to my in laws and I am at a loss for what to take home as gifts! Pls give me some ideas or examples of what you take home. They visit us at least every 6 months, if not more frequently, and mil literally brings suitcases of gifts each time. I'll need gifts for mom in law, father in law, nephew 12 years old, brother in law and fiancé, and sister in law. And...I've left it very late! Thank you! We always take home Bateel dates and chocolates, because not only are they yummy, but you get great boxes with them that you can keep after you've eaten the contents, that make great jewellery/trinket boxes. There's Bateel outlets in Souk al Bahar, Dubai Mall and Town Centre Mall (next door to Mercato). Also at Deira and Burjuman-I would worry about them melting though

So do u people go round with your ears and eyes shut?.....not listening to the news/tv radio/facebook or look at the papers...As they have all been discussing it this morning. I have to watch a final when its happening thats why its exciting. I can never watch it the next day espically sports like tennis football etc. We don't get the papers-never listen to the radio-and as I don't work it is perfectly possible not to hear the results discussed beforehand

I think you will find either the textile markets in Bur Dubai and Deira or Satwa-or even a trip to DragonMart way cheaper than any shopping mall sales-these places don't have sales buy you can bargain as hard as you like and the price will be much lower

Check the Book Depository-postage is free to anywhere in the world. Also I have had uni books shipped here via the uni co-op stores-they charge way less than the uni book shops-so do a search for the co-op at the unis that teach your subject-I paid way less than half of what Monash quoted using a small Q'land uni co-op

The best breads are straight out of the street ovens down in Bur Dubai-between Bank Street and the bus station-no idea of steet names sorry-I tend to wander-might add it isn't the cleanest part of Dubai if that worries you! Otherwise just wander through the area-I am sure you have wandered both sides of the Creek and done the camel rides and abra over-still my favourite way to spend an evening.The guys in the textile market will squeeze you a lovely fresh orange juice on the spot to quench your thirst-served in a glass-not a paper cup! Wander down to Karama for a last bargain too-some lovely Indian and Arabic restaurants where you can sit and watch the world go by-also Meena Bazaar-love the sari shops feauturing just one incredible embroidered Indian sari with breathtaking workmanship. I would include the Dubai fountains in my last days here too as I love them-and the underground souq at Wafi (Khan Murjan) at great prices as it is sadly quiet there so bargain like mad! If I had time I would revisit the camel markets at Al Ain and buy sweets from the Al Ain bakeries-they have the best kanafi (sp) in the Emirates!) Failing that the one at Wafi Gourmet isn't bad and their local dishes of the day are authentic andd yummy.
