is there anything that you can pick which is related to australia which has some meaning and synergy, for example (and it's off the top of mu head so not brilliant!) but a type of strong australian rock...this would tie in to strong foundations and building/engineering...is there a tree or plant similar? There is an Iron Bark Tree!

all of you that live in these apartment blocks need, for your own peace of mind a stategy of escape. All my family know exactly what to do in the event of a fire - we live in a villa, but both the boys know how to escape....I wouldn't rely on the fire service to do any rescuing or even for that matter know which way the hose goes to put out the fire...Maybe it should be the tenants in the building to keep on at the landlord/owner of the building to get a procedure in place. The more people that pester the more they will have to put somehting in place. I have had the misfortune to have seen a fire in place and it really isn't the nicest thing to witness. Please for all your own safety make a stand and say that you need to have fire procedures in place and that the fire alarms are working and working correctly....but always take it that if an alarm goes off - there is a fire....it is good practice.... The firefighters have a training facility in Satwa_i am sure there are others-and you often see them doing time trials and having drills and putting out fires in a tower they have on the grounds so it is a bit harsh to say they don't know one end of a hose from the other

Are you saying if BH died you wouldn't have to pay his credit card debt out of the estate? Just wondering-not about to push him under the No 10 bus................ I don't think that's what she is saying. Credit card debts etc would have to come out of his estate if he died before any residue was left to wife etc. but it would a different matter if he left her and hadn't settled his debts. If the accounts/debts are in his name only and she has her own accounts then she may not be held liable. But you may still cop for his life insurance....... as long as you don't get caught! LOL Might leave him be then-quite fond of him actually!

Thanks-got the rectangular one-the square butterfly one is eluding me so if anyone sees one-or has one they wish to on-sell please let me know. It is still a current catalogue item but they aren't doing intenational shipping till June-and not to here anyway.

There really isn't a spice souk anymore. There's only one or two shops left that still sells spices and only to tourists at vastly inflated prices (and of dubious quality). The souks that stretch betwee the creek and the sea on the Deira side are rather atmospheric even if most of the shops are only wholesale. Behind the "spice" souk is a patchwork of covered passageways and courtyards. I've still never figured out what most of the shops actually survive on.... Doing a mental count here-there are at least 20 spice sellers-maybe more-they are on both sides of the lane and down 2 alley ways-love the spice market-and I am sure all the stores survive quite well-head down there after 8 or 9 pm-it is always busy

Thanks wuffles. Are there any other bazaars in bur dubai that you know off? Karama fo sure! Have you been to the new naif souq? Been to the Naif souq-not sure about it being the new one though. I guess all the Indian area backing on from the Creek could be termed a bazaar too-hard to say where it starts and stops! Depends if you define a bazaar as somewhere to go and bargain in which case those stores qualify-and the ones around al Fahidi roundabout

Not a souq-but Karama is fun. Also in the hot weather the indoor souqs-while not the old authentic ones are good--Khan Murjhan, Souq al Bahar and the one at Madinat Jumeirah

Eucalyptus of course and fresh mown grass and barbecue smoke (and in summer the terrifying smell of bushfire smoke from the hills-don't miss that one at all) but especially the smell of sawdust which filled my childhood as my dear dad was never happier than when he worked away in his workshop building us billy carts and doll houses and assorted bits of furniture while he whistled away-and no-one culd ever beat my dad's whistling-or workmanship.

I was at brunch on Friday and we all got chatting on what is hard to say, try this, say it as normal as you can "Irish Wrist Watch". Gets worse if you have had a few. Anyone else have anymore!!!!! Sorry to disagree but as a teacher it was the personal gifts I loved best-notes from students saying how I had helped them-notes in broken English saying how much they had improved!- etc-still have a mis-shapen pottery vase on of my 15 year old refugee students gave me-his parents had been skinned alive in front of him and he had no-one in the world to give presents to-sad but true. Not saying gift certificates aren't nice-but they are not what is treasured

I'm with wuffles...I like my hands. They're ragged and chipped and wrinkled and calloused, stained with paint, covered with food and are the things that provide for my family, all the love, the discipline, the work. They gesture alot and talk for me when i struggle to express myself. Yup...really like my hands...they look now like they are everything they have ever done. :)

Funny how we are never happy isn't it-I think my hands are the only bit I really like!!!! I do wonder how much they can improve hands though-I know if you look at actors that have had stacks of work done their hands are still often a giveaway to their age and I am sure if something was around they would have surely had that done too.

We often see young ladies (Filipino I would think) in their 20s popping into our corner supermarket in what are obviously PJs-decently covered but it seems odd to me-though no-one else seems to give them a second glance-maybe it is all they have apart from their work uniforms?

Is the spice souq really close to the gold souq? I thought it was a drive! The area right at the end of banyas road opposite the creek isn't that the spice souq? Then you drive to the fish market and gold souq is opposite it? They are right next to each other-a couple of minutes walk at most with a few textile shops between-the spice market is closer to the Creek So what is the area close to the fish market near hyatt regency? Lots of gold shops amoung others. Is it just the overflow of shops from the gold market?-the area traditionally called the gold market has pretty much nothing but gold shops and is covered by that high arched wooden roof

haha. well mine doesnt really like cots, he prefers his wooden bed but cant take that along on a trip hahahahaha. and he hates sleeping in bed with me so I kinda have to take a cot. but no space on the way back due to too much shopping so the only way we found that worked was that we get one use it for as many days we stay which is usually max 7 days and than find someone who really needs one and make them happy :) Sounds like an excellent plan-as long as you all get some sleep nothing else matters!

I know what u mean wuffles but since we do it at least once or twice a year, I am not gonna buy a new one to give away. ofcourse I wont give a broken down bed or teared clothes but what I meant is cheap things can be good as well, they wont know the difference if it pricy or on budget. plus I know tons of ppl who would appreciate even an 5 year old cot with lots of smiles . I understand-my two had very pre-loved cots anyway!:)

hey we r actually always buying one when we go on vacation and than leaving it for poor ppl on our way home due to lack of space. so if you would like to sell it I would gladly take it off ur hands. just that we r usually looking for a max 100 dhs since we only will use it for max 4 days and I bet the ppl in need wont care if its a cheap or expensive one. let me know While I am sure any cot would be appreciated I am not sure I agree with your sentiments entirely. My son worked as a volunteer distributing donated clothes to the homeless all last year and when nice new clothes or more up-market ones came in he said his clients were thrilled because it meant someone else really valued them-rather than just looking at a way to get rid of unwanted items. Not a criticism-just a thought.

I haven't been there yet myself, but both our most recent visitors have loved Dubai's first school, which is also in that area, I believe? I think this is the one you mean-entry is free http://www.dubaifaqs.com/al-ahmadiya-school.php There is also a school mock-up in the museum if you haven't time to visit the real one

Also apart from the museum there is the Architectural Museum, Horse Museum, Camel Museum, Stamp and Coin Museum etc etc and the Heritage and Diving Villages-all on Bur Dubai side-and of course the lovely camel by the Bastikiya-apparently they won't bring the falcon out when it is hot. If you are feeling adventurous you can also walk through the underpass under the Creek instead of taking the 1 dh abra-and the 4dh enclosed water taxi down to Baniyas station is good value too Enjoy-I live by the Creek and love it

Just to add the information desks are very helpful and will write down a grid reference to where you can find a product. Also get there at 10 am if you can. Quilts and bedlinen are cheap-and some are great quality too. Have fun. I always take the bus there and the trip home with all the packages can be interesting as I always buy too much!

Not sure about the UK but I use Emirates Post surface (sea) mail to send small -and large-boxes and it is surprisingly quick and inexpensive-you can calculate the rates online yourself before heading off to the post office. We have never had anything lost or damaged PS If you pay the costs the mail room at your-or your BH's work may help dispatch them for you if no post office is nearby <em>edited by wuffles on 19/05/2011</em>
