Thanks ladies. I was considering the sleep clinic, however AH is known to be too steeply priced. Wondering if there are any other options in Dubai. DH is overweight and quit smoking about 2 years ago. Also on medications for Diabetes, Hypertension and Cholesterol. Just might explain the need for this to be sorted out on immediate basis. Any more inputs from anyone else? Have you actually rung the American Hospital for a price? Has your DH had a comprehensive 'wellman' type assessment? I know medical care is expensive but the longer you leave it the more you are likely to pay. Would your insurance cover it?

Didn't you also say in an earlier post that he is possibly being transferred to Russia and you aren't sure you want to give up your career to accompany him-if so-seems there is a lot more than potential children to discuss

This thread strikes a chord with me. The one thing that I know I shall miss when we arrive next month is my close friends. As a 50+ it's seems harder to find opportunitues to socialise and as I won't be working either, I am already wondering where to start. So if you see me wandering around with two dogs all day long, I'm not a mad keen dog walker, but just hoping to ambush someone for a chat ;) Feel free to ambush this 50 something-but I won't be out walking dogs (don't have one anyway!) in this weather!

Husband is Arabic (from Palestine) -he has had several first cousins in the family marry-they need the permission of the Priest (they are Christian Orthodox). However they are beginning to see birth defects are actually a result of this and it is not as common as it was and I suspect it will become the exception in the future-I am an Aussie and wouldn't consider it-though all my male cousins are adopted anyway!

Yes, the bus is a good idea and it could go up to the hotel too. You wonder if the people who design these systems ever use them. The metro cost so much that the expense of an extra bridge or another feeder bus would be minimal but would encourage more people to use it and pay for itself in the end. ETA; I also wish there was parking available at stations, like the park and ride system in Brisbane. edited by A Rancher on 16/05/2011 Maybe it is time to visit their mall manager too-or start an email campaign!

It would be so good for commuters if there was a bridge from the metro station to Ibn Battuta Mall - it wouldn't cost so much surely? Driving along where commuters cross can be scary sometimes! Why on earth don't they have a free shuttle bus-or eveb charge you a small fee-5dhs maybe--it puts you off going when it heats up

Perhaps you could pay for the cleaning and boxing of her wedding dress after the wedding-assuming she is keeping it-my daughter would have loved that as it is so expensive to get done=and sort of thr last straw after all the pre-wedding costs

Negative feed back for at least 18 months ! Everything moves slow in Dubai. Good it keeps the issue going. done! thanks wuffles :) Great-hopefully something will happen-he did say they had had a lot of negative feedback and were currently working on a solution so this is a good time to make your voice heard edited by jewelsmiddle on 16/05/2011 He said it was top of the list so I guess everything takes time-or perhaps someone else was dealing/not dealing with the complaints previously. I emailed him after meeting him this morning and he returned my email promptly so I shall hope....

Glad to see I'm not the only metro fan! Almost a double post:-) I noticed that! We live nest to the Burjuman station-have been a big fan since I won a golden ticket to ride the first metro train-we also have gold and silver cards and use both depending on the day and time of week

Really? Will have to check next time I am using the station, will be easier than stopping for a new ticket everytime I use it. I did see a leftlet recently which had a few cards listed so I may be getting mixed up with their names. Fares are also slightly cheaper with the Nol card

The Dubai Metro is just awesome. You can't go wrong with a NOL card, I have both a silver and a gold card for rush hours. If I know it's going to be crowded and uncomfy, I simply use the gold card for the trip. I love everything about the metro except that people don't wait before the other passengers have left the train to enter. Khalid Ben Al Waleed station is possibly the most beautiful metro station I have ever seen, I could write poems about that station! There's even a maximum of how many dirhams you can spend in one day, so if you reach something like 14 AED the next trips that day will be FREE - also on buses etc. I simply can't praise it enough - the clean toilets, lovely juice stops on the way out at some stations, very helpful staff who spot when you're looking for help. What more could you want? Public transport in Denmark is so pricy, a single trip on our buses costs 14 AED for just a small distance. But don't attempt to eat or drink on the metro-or chew gum (yuck) as you will be fined-even water is a no-no A silver NOL card costs 20 AED including 14 AED 'credit'. You buy a silver card for minimum of 20dhs (14 of that is credit-the other 6 the cost of the card). Then top it up as needed. If you want to go gold class you need a gold card and all trips cost twice as much. The silver can be used in the ladies carriage too. Each time you swipe it shows how much is left so you won't get caught without credit. ou can't pay more than 14 dhs a day no matter how many trips you make on a silver (gold is different). On buses don't forget to swipe on and off or you will be overcharged. I use buses and trains all the time as we haven't got a car-the whole public transport system is great-very eay to use. In buses ladies have reserved seats up the front so hop on through the front door.

Bur Juman is by far the most accessible. Biggest metro station underground, take an escalator one level up and you are right outside the mall. same as deira cite centre.. MOE is the most accessible among all i think.. the station practically opens inside the mall ;) .....but Burjuman has less walking involved-and they have couches to rest on!

I find a lot of malls lack seating. MCC for one. I had to feed my baby and was luckily close to a coffee shop. Didn't like the idea of sitting there without ordering but really what else can you do when they don't have anywhere to sit other than coffee shops and food courts. Burjuman has the most couches-very comfortable too! They are putting them everywhere.

I am bringing up this old thread because after the visit of my very frail 85 year old auntie I saw how bad a problem the lack of benches is. Rather than send an email to cyberspace I went upstairs to centre management and asked to speak to someone. I was quickly passed between people and then introduced to the General Manager. I have to say he was charming and very helpful-he explained the centre's side of the story-explained benches had primarily been moved because people had complained some men were sitting there for long periods and staring at women shoppers and secondly people eating on the benches did not give the feel of a high end mall which they wished to project. He also referred to the volume of foot traffic and congestion on the weekends. All valid points but he was also prepared to listen to my view. He said they are in the process of re-assessing the situation as I was not the only one to have raised the issue-and I believed him as he did a walk-around after I left his office. Re-considering benches was one item high on the list so if you feel motivated to re-email or vist the office now might be the time to do so. I have to say the level of customer service impressed me. I was expecting to be merely given a complaints for to fill in-so well done on that score MOE

Yes I did have a look at the youth hostels site and the ones that are closest to where she needs to go for her work experience are fully booked. She is going in July(after exams) but it is peak tourist season in London - a lot of the hostels, hotels, b&b type of places are very busy. I'll keep on trying though. Thanks for your interest.:) Good Luck-I would email the hostel you are most interested in direct-did that when my son went for the first time-they were very helpful and might have unconfirmed bookings they would let you have-or at very least put her on a wait list. I was impressed at how efficient they were-also try uni accomodation as unis let out their accomodation during holiday times

She's not actually my daughter......but she is quite an independent young lady and she already lives in the UK, so is fairly streetwise about UK cities, public transport etc. Sorry-if that is the case surely a youth hostel would be fine-my son stayed in one in central London and they had free breakfast in the mornings as part of the deal-he loved it. You can pay more and get a single room in some hostels too

Perhaps there are some host family organisations you can try then? Is she worried about being alone in London-or are you worrying more?-might make a difference to the final decision-I know my 17 year old daughter would have coped wonderfully well no matter where she stayed-my son would have been better with a host family-though I am sure he would have coped regardless

Paul pink might work too-but try somewhere inconspicuous-otherwise try something like Sard Wonder Soap-sometimes just rewashing after rubbing with soap will work

Lemon juice works on light clothes-googled the rest because I am too lazy to retype it myself-but I have tried it-so good luck Try rubbing the rust stains with a lemon. Squeeze as much of the juice from one lemon onto the rust stains as possible. When the stains are completely saturated, take the garment and lay it out in the sun. Between the sun and the lemon, the stain should bleach right out. Launder as usual. Again, if the stain isn’t completely removed after laundering, don’t put it in the dryer unless you want to risk a permanent rust stain on your clothing. Keep in mind that lemon bleaches, so if the rust stains are on a dark item of clothing, test in a hidden area first.

I rather go to a reputed dealer than any carpet guys coming to my house and disturbing my privacy. As when i was in Bahrain i had a bad experience with one of the carpet guys. i was swimming and heard someone knocking on my door. When i saw it was this guy wanted to come in and show carpet. As i was in my swimsuit i asked him not to come in but he insisted that it will just take 5 minutes. He was wearing a white dress seem as if was Bahraini but actually he was from Yeman. After that i never buy carpets from people coming to my place. I rather that my time and go to the store whenever i need something. Does anyone else had any similar experience. No-and I would never open my front door to anybody unless fully dressed...............

I know how you feel-I am in no hurry to go back to Australia yet. One thing that might console you a little is that should you return here you might not have the lifestyle you once had (if sending money back home) as the exchange rate is so horrendous. It is the only thing that makes us consider a return Down Under at the minute

In virgin mercato i saw some travel mugs. They are made out of normal china with a plastic top that fits in. Not suitable for all circumstances I guess! They have different things written on them. They look good but make sure the lids are tight fitting-the ones I looked at looked a bit iffy

I've got the Emirates Islamic Bank credit card... it's been only a month but it seems to be all good so far *touch wood* I left HSBC for EIB because I wasn't getting much out of the airmiles to be honest. SalsB, where did you get those surveys from? I get the reward points with, www.e-rewards.ae Googled it-but it says by invitation only-and no-one has invited me.....:(

I photo transfered some of the best picures to fabric and made them each a quilt-which they love-but if that is too much work photograph or scan the pictures and make a photobook of the best ones. They won't deteriorate like the originals and it workks well for collages as well. Oh and I do still have a couple of pictures I drew as a child many many moons ago-not sure why mum saved them as they demonstarte my lack of any artistic ability with alarming clarity!

Crossing in an abra at dusk is lovely this time of year and she can check out the markets either side. The camel is down Bastikiya way in the mornings too-apparently too hot for the falcon now.....

Umm. I'm here, but I don't normally stay up this late. I was part of the regular night shift when I was still in the UK just before I came out. With the time difference, not sure that counts though. WAS there a Thursday Night Thread today? Have I missed it? ditto !!! thinking i should be in bed.... and i think everyone's still recovering from the horrors of the bin laden threads earlier in the week... True-I have stayed off because of the nastiness for want of a better word

I googled this-worth a try-I have used milk on stubborn stains before-good luck!" •If henna comes in contact with leather, wipe off the henna with warm water and laundry soap. Take care that you do not spread the stain. Dab the excess water with paper towels or clean terry cloth to lift off most of the henna and wipe the area dry. Warm milk applied to the stain and left for about thirty minutes before washing it off with soap will help remove henna stain on leather.
