I don't know of tailors in Karama, but there are plenty in Satwa, or any of the little places around Dubai should be able to do it. There are tailors in Karama-have used them for basic stiff but can't recollect the name i am afraid-cheap to use though

Worms - yikes, big fat wriggly worms, no no no no no! Or centipedes, it's all the legs arghhhhhhh Don't go to Australia then-the giant Gippsland earthworms are over a meter long!!!! LOL I haven't seen any there - yet! Found a Huntsman spider under the loo once though - eeeeek Don't mind those-my grandma always had one in the bathroom -she referred to it as her 'pet'........

Bogong moths-huge hairy moths -my brother used to put live ones in my bed at night so perhaps it is an understandable fear as I have no issues with any other creepy crawlies...and an extremely odd phobia-buttons in bulk (like a jar full)-eeek-no idea why-can cope with individual ones on clothing but that is about it!

Just be careful if you use Interflora-BH ordered flowers through them last Mother's Day (as I was back home) and they forwarded to order to the closest florist to our home-who unfortunately did not open or deliver on a Sunday-he was not impressed!

I'm sure there is a lady here who makes pies from home, big ones. Maybe google pies dubai?! Greggs would go down a storm here. But they look idiot proof to make-nothing difficult in that recipe-only hard part would be stopping at one!

Ours was put on the wrong flight to Hawaii and we were told we would be compensated if it took longer than 24 hours. They gave us a basic kit with a towel, shampoo, toothbrush etc and some very large airline branded t-shirts to wear in the interim.....and promised to deliver the luggage to our hotel as soon as it arrived the next morning. Hope you get yours back soon.

The Board of the Reserve Bank, at its meeting today, decided to leave the cash rate unchanged at 4.75 per cent. Sorry-can you explain the implications of that with regard to the exchange rate-I gather it is not good news? Means our mortgage repayments in AUD have not increased which is a huge blessing, in light of the current exchange rate. Thanks-good news for you then. I am relieved ours is paid off-but annoyed we cannot rent it out due to circumstances such as a son and cats at home!

If it is any help our son had 37 trips to theatre in his first 2 years and his surgeons all impresed upon us how vital a good anesthetist is-the fact that your surgeon is chosing the hospital on this basis would give me added confidence-all the best.

I honestly would not worry about it because if you were not supposed to download it, the website would prevent it :) There are sites where I would like to copy and past pictures or download and I am prevented so, if someone does not want them copies/downloaded they can put the thing on that prevents it :) (erm..have no idea what that thing is lol) Wasn't worried-merely curious!

here's a list of things that i think one shouldnt miss while they are here: At the top of burj khalifa fountains of dubai mall shaikh zayed mosque (its in Abu Dhabi but its breathtakingly beautiful and is the 4th largest mosque of the world has the largest one piece handwoven carpet in the world and all that) dhow cruise --- but book a good one as there are some with rats on it *yikes dessert safari ---- go for evening / night peacocks in front of the king's palace (ok i guess its for kids but still fun to do and free too ;) ) may be one of the friday brunches(?) Rats?!? Omg ewwww! Do u recommend any dhow cruises from experience? And which to avoid?!? sorry havent done the dhow cruise yet but have heard it from DH ... may be he was trying to scare me away lol Where exactly are the peacocks? You can do a dhow cruise for 50 dhs from Festival City-not sure how good it is but easy to get to if you are already shopping there

In spite of all I think we will hang onto our house-sadly it isn't rented as our son still lives there-and if he didn't we'd have to do a major store and sort-ugh! Ours is huge too-6 bedrooms etc-but part of it is a self contained flat which we hope to rent out in our old age as supplemental income. Either that or we will be stuck in the granny flat and rent the main house out of the exchange rate keeps eating into BH's salary. makes looking for work back home a tad appealing sadly.

You can have mine for free. It is a Singer (bought in Finland). I have used it twice. The first time went ok but the second time the thread/needle/?/I went crazy and I ended up with a wrinkled fabric with thread all over the place. I am sure if you took it to Satwa they would know what is wrong with it... or maybe it is just me - I suck :D I suspect you just need to rethread it

Carrefour sells a Toyota quilting sewing machine with all the basic features she will need and the extras like the quarter inch foot. A walking foot is useful for quilting but not essential.It is called the Quiltmaster. Sure there are nice fancy Berninas and such but I have been quilting nearly 30 years and this one works fine for me-mind you I prefer hand quilting to machine quilting to finish the quilt. If she wants to do fancy feathers and such you may need a more up-market one but as she is a good hand sewer she may prefer to piece by machine and quilt by hand-as mistakes are easier to fix!

Hey are these basic machines good for 10 / 11 yr olds as gonna put my daughter on a workshop with craft land and she ll need a machine so need one so we can learn / sew but not too expensive incase she gets bored I'n 6 months time ? Tia She has it I'n her head she wants to do quilting but that's more advance isn't it ? Tia No-my daughter did basic patchwork on my machine at 6 or 7-with a (very) little help-depends what she wants to do. Any 10 year old could make a basic quilt by hand if taught properly-it isn't hard. A basic machine should be just fine unless she wants to do superfine machine quilting (the part where you sandwich the layers together)-but at that age they usually tie quilts by hand which basically involves making a big decorative knot through the 3 layers

Think we may sell our house back in OZ as too hard sending money back to cover it. DH said heard that our $ is the most over rated G10 currency. With interest rates going up may drive Australia into a huge recession. Thinking of buying an investment property in Europe while their prices are low as we all know Australian house prices are some of the most expensive in the World wow have you looked at housing prices in Europe? Housing prices in Germany rival beachfront Sydney My daughter just bought her first house in Melbourne at the same time my best friend in Belgium's daughter did the same thing there-was way cheaper in Belgium than back home But you can not compare a city to a whole country... Did she buy it in Brussels or somewhere between sheep :). I know-big difference none the less-and sheep in both places! It is just getting depressing when you still have a house and bills back home

Don't forget it isn't just the school run back and forth twice a day-and you really need to trial it in peak times rather than guessing how bad it will be-but also the play dates and endless birthday parties they have at that age that you will be driving to and from. My daughter went to a school 40 mins from home in Australia (had a scholarship) and it really made it hard for her to form friendships as we had to limit her visits to her school friends-which she resented. She was also often tired when it came to homework time in later years. I know that is a bit down the track for you but it still needs to be considered.

I read somewhere today that the wedding (off course not the entire wedding!) has cost the Middletons (i can't believe my computer doesn't have a sterling sign!:\: ) 250,000 pounds!!!! They have paid for everything from the bride's dress and jewellery and bouquet to all 71 rooms in Goring hotel. Pippa's dress has cost them 20,000 pounds!! Are all retired airline staff this wealthy?? Apparently they have to pay for a portion of the honeymoon as well. I love taking visitors down to the souqs (evening after 5pm, otherwise too hot now). Karama is another favourite, or even Satwa for textiles and the general "vibe" of the area. Then pop into one of the many places along Diyafah Street for dinner or a juice. Favourite restaurant in Karama: Yahala Restaurant near Emirates Bank. Favourite restaurant in Bur Dubai: KanZaman, Bur Dubai side, past HSBC and Carrefour walking towards Shindagha tunnel. Have fun with your friend! Thanks hun! Yeahh definitely will give a tour of those areas. What are those restaurants good for? Arabic food? Like shawarmas n falafels? Yahala has nice inexpensive Arabic food

How much does it cost to go on an Abra on the creek? Believe it or not, been living in UAE for 12 years now, but never been on one yet.. I dirham each way-have the right change as you pay on board-and the cheaper water taxis (not the ones you order) are 4 dhs-bargain!

I love the Magrudy stores but I think part of the problem is the choice of poor locations within the mall. The IB store is spacious but it is at the end of a section where there are few passersby. The gloria jeans opposite them has taken over the coffee bean and tea leaf spot in the food court. Even in Dubai Mall the Magrudys was downstairs and difficult to find while the ones in Festival City & Bur Juman that also closed were up out of the way on the top floor. It would be better to have a smaller area in a busy part of the mall than a large space in an area few people visit. For years it was really the only good book shop in Dubai. They need to do something to differentiate themselves from other book shops. Agree (especially re the Burjuman one) but the Deira one was right next to the Metro entrance and opposite Virgin Megastore and always busy so I thought it might have been the last to go-so hope the lovely staff were moved to other stores

Whatever you do keep calling her-you will sense the days she wants to talk and those she doesn't. My best friend's teenage son recently died of cancer and many of her friends simply did not call because they did not know what to say or felt akward when she asked about their children of similar age. Once the funeral is over and people expect her to get on with her life may well be when she needs you the most. It is unutterably sad that this has happened and your friend will need your support for a long time.
