This is what my husband keeps telling me, that he wants me to be able to speak with a gulf accent like his family to avoid confusion and struggling - what he doesn't seem to understand is what a struggle it is to find someone to teach it! :-) Natalie, what about you? confused...:-) The cultural centre should have native speakers-Natalie was confused because you thanked her and not me!

Wonderful, thank you so much wuffles! No worries-Gulf Arabic has quite a different sound to Arabic spoken elsewhere-even my husband who is a native speaker finds it hard to follow at times-I have picked up more slang watching the soapies! The written and clasical are of course uniform across the region

I learnt Arabic at university back in Australia for two hears and picked up "kitchen Arabic' from my husband's family. I am working on my Gulf slang from the soapies on TV here as my husband is not an Emirati but a Palestinian. Here is the link for Gulf language lessons down by the Creek at Sheikh Mohammed's Centre for Cultural Understanding-haven't tried them so no idea what they are like-hope that helps. http://www.cultures.ae/spoken_arabic.php Forgot to add-welcome to the board edited by wuffles on 10/04/2011

Hi Violette, Its good to hear that the treatment is working for your LO , i am going to enquire with the specialist in the UK if this will also work for my DD as i hate the fact that its on her face , but i suppose because nothing is rubbing against it etc thats why they have advised to just leave it but i am defo gonna ask. My friend also said that she knows of another baby that has a hemangioma on her face and drs in the uk are treating with betablockers , maybe i should contact a dermatologist instead. Can you please let me know the dermatologist you consulted with in Dubai as i would love to get another opinion on this. Shaf , sorry i dont know what GOSH is? Great Ormond Street Hospital

I can't really put my finger on why I feel uncomfortable about her going on the bus; maybe it's that there's no "supervision" as she's never really been out on her own. She's had sleepovers with friends and families but it's people we know well and even when she's with her own friends it's girls that I know pretty well. Guess I'm just bit scared about her going out completely on her own! Fair enough-maybe try doing the bus trip with her and see if you feel the same way afterwards.Girls in groups can be challenging!

I understand your concerns re seatbelts etc but what is worrying you most about the buses? She would be sitting up front in the ladies section and I have never had a bad bus driver or seen passengers being difficult. I think I would rather my daughter went on a bus than in a taxi if the choice was between the two. edited by wuffles on 09/04/2011

Thanks for your replies. Dd keeps asking why she can't get the bus but I'm just not comfortable for her to go on her own. I know in other countries teens catch public transport and go across the city for school etc and she will have to go out on her own eventually but I feel uneasy about her doing it here. Thanks I'll stick to my position.

exotoc/ wild animals escaping are nothing new. I also live in jumeriah and remember when a cheetah escaped about 3 years ago. They are usally caught. 2 years ago on the Palm a monkey came after me when I was walking on the beach. I was very frightened because I was 5 months pregnant and the animal was flashing me his teeth. We called the police and the houseboy insisted he was just being friendly. Isn't it a sign of agression when monkeys show their teeth? Might have had a lucky escape!

Weak excuse-they knew how many Gold Circle tickets had been sold surely-all they had to do was rope off a smaller area before opening the doors-seems pretty basic-if I had paid the extra I would be demanding a refund. The promoter would have been aware how many tickets had been sold so point 2 doesn't wash with me.

Just a thought-is she a street cat? We had one who would roll for ever in her clean litter box-think she used it like sand to clean her fur? Maybe you could give her one of those huge washing bowls filled with sand to sleep in so she knows it is different from the litter box-mine loved her sand box and never mistook it for a litter box. edited by wuffles on 06/04/2011

Me! I am nothing to write home about but as I grow older and greyer I see my parents (now dead) in me more and that is rather a nice way of recalling my dad's eyes or my mum's mannerisms-I just pray my sight gets a little worse so what I see in the mirror looks better!!!! I have no desire to look like someone else-no matter how stunning they may be. edited by wuffles on 06/04/2011

I have used Momento but it isn't as user friendly than Shutterfly-and it is more expensive so the costs end up being pretty much equal. Snap Fish might be a better option

You can also take the No 10 bus from opposite Burjuman and head towards the Creek-buses are very cheap and you won't pay for the children. No playgrounds as such but plenty of grass to run around on, boats to look at and even a camel and falcon just before the mosque! The museum is cheap to visit if you want to get out of the sun. It isn't a massive walk if the bus is too hard and there are some shaded walkways along the creek plus paved paths for your pram. There is a childrens play area upstairs in Burjuman too-no idea how much it costs as my children are all grown up. Oh-and welcome to Dubai!

I used to try and use the metro as much as possible but only if I really have too....because of the rudeness of the users, and I'm talking about the 'Women Only' section! Pushing, shoving to get on/off, extremely loud chatter on mobile phones and the last straw was sitting on the side seat, myself and three others, then another woman comes along and literally squeezes herself onto the seat as well, without even an 'excuse me'! There was no space!!! Just pure selfish and I'm fed up with it :( I has the opposite yesterday-a row of petite Filipino girls all sqeezed up to make room for not so petite me - so it is not all bad! Mnd you I never bother with the Ladies Only carriage as have found I am far more likely to be offered a seat in the other carriages.

I know people are trying to help, but this sounds like its getting a bit heated!! I feel sorry for you GreenQueen. She asked a simple question and people are jumping down her throat! Not nice ladies. One solution would be for the maid to stay at her sponsors house and come to you each day. That way she is not full time with you as she is still living at her own house and you are getting the benefit of the help you need. If I was going away I would happily let you have my maid. Good luck in your search for a reliable maid that someone knows and would recommend. That would still be illegal

There is a balance between when the shots are given and how long he will be quarantined back home-the aim is to work out the dates so you have the shortest possible quarantine period in Australia as it is so expensive.
