You can bring wooden boxes . camels etc in but declare them-they will often inspect to see if they are varnished and check for woodworm-some items can be sprayed and returned to you at your cost if there are issues. Sometimes they just ask if the boxes are varnished and don't look at them-but whatever you do, make sure you tick the box saying you have got wooden items. Odd things aren't allowed-once I bought home a wooden nativity set-which they had no issues with but the remved the 'wood grass' from its base. Oh and the customs guys are good to deal with if you are up front with them-just tick every box-even if you aren't sure-if you only have chocolates tick the food box and ask if they are a food item for example-generally they don't check if you list what you have. And untreated leather like drum skins are a no-no- your camel saddle on a wooden will probably not be an issue-but ask <em>edited by wuffles on 13/03/2011</em>

Wuffles, how on earth do you know what seasonal fruit and veg are here? Of course, I buy anything which is grown "locally", but other than that, I have no idea of what is seasonal in the shops here. Are dates seasonal all year round, for example - at home, they were only seasonal at Christmas? Fair point-shall I change that to buy what is on special-and ideally local produce which will be cheaper and fresher

We don't have a car-just use public transport and the odd taxi-but of course that won't work for everyone. Hard to give suggestions when we don't know your family situation taxi.. really won't work for me. will be more expensive for me. But buses are cheap if you can use them! Yes wuffles, I am working and want to reach home as soon as possible. I have 3 lovely DDs & I don't want to let them wait so long. I love cooking so I have to prepare Dinner as well. :( Fair enough-you need a car when you have children! Might work out cheaper to make double quantities when you cook and freeze half-could save you going to the supermarket so often and getting tempted by what is on the shelves-will also save you time! Go shopping with a list and stick to it-buy seasonal veggies and fruit to save money

You need to make a clear line between things you need and things you want!!! Budget for upcoming bills first and then see what is left t play with!!! Also put aside some money each pay for a longterm goal such as a trip away

Write down everything you spend money on for a whole month-will show you areas where you can cut down. I also have a budget book the current one goes back about five years so I know what bills are coming up and how much they were in previous years so I have an idea what to put aside

Haven't stayed there but it is close to Burjuman and walking distance to the Metro. It is in old Dubai so I guess it depends what you need to be close to. After hearing nonstop about JBR walk, DH and I decided to venture out with DD a few months ago, and boy did we regret it! It was total turmoil, traffic snaking as far as the eye could see, DH dropped us off and dissapeared to the end of the line where he finally found a spot while DD and I took in the ambience and tried not to come under the feet of people thronging past. No one actually seemed to be doing any shopping, everyone was just whiling away the time. There was a total and utter lack of soul to the place, it seemed like a movie set, cant explain it any better. As soon as DH found us I had to take a toilet break, nightmare to find one, and got into a Starbucks that was filthy and the loo smelled. Beat a hasty retreat to the beach and watched the madness from afar. Took us 20-30 minutes to get the car out of the U-turn and back on the way home. Scores of cars thought it was ok to blare the loudest music from their crystal clear audio surround systems. We quickly rolled windows up, but what about those with sleeping babes in the apartments? Swore to ourselves, NEVER again. I felt very sorry for the poor residents who actually had to live there. I remember telling DH what if someone were to have a medical emergency on a weekend or need to get home quick? This street SHOULD be closed off for residents and owners only. Nightmare. Had much the same experience-some friends drove us down as we wanted to take a look-never again-it was a nightmare getting in and out-couldn't even find an empty table to have a coffee as loads of people were hogging the tables after they had finished their drinks

I decided to post the positive aspects of living in JBR for those who may consider living here, since the negative aspects have been posted and reposted. While I will agree with some of the negative things mentioned, it is always good to have a well rounded, dare I say fair and balanced, review to consider! :) We are in our 4th year of living in JBR - we don't HAVE to live here, we CHOOSE to live here. One of my responsibilities over the past 4 years has been to locate corporate housing for some of our personnel - I've viewed apartments / duplexes in almost every tower / community in the Marina, many buildings in Al Barsha, JLT, the Lofts in the Burj Khalifa area, etc.. When weighing the pros and cons of living here, and having the opportunity to move every year if I wanted to, the pros win every time, which are: 1) We have a fantastic view of the Marina from every room in my apartment, and we start every morning with the Sunrise. 2) My teenage daughter has several friends from school living in the community, and most of her friends that live elsewhere come to our community on the weekends. They go to the beach, our pool, and spend time down on the JBR Walk or on the Marina Walk in the evening and I am not worried. 3) Our bedrooms are larger and better laid out than most other apartments in this price range. 4) We have a full size laundry room rather than doing the wash in the kitchen, where most washers are located in apartments here. 5) We have a grocery store, Starbucks, and Gym on the plaza level of our section, and our Doctor's office and hair salon are right next door. 6) We don't have to fight the traffic on the Beach side of JBR on the weekends because we live here - we can walk down to any restaurant, hotel or shop whenever we want. 7) We live on the beach. When considering living in New York City recently, I took into consideration the salary, cost of an apartment in the city of comparable standards, the noise level of the city, conveniences and inconveniences, safety, etc., - we are staying here. Would love to hear from others that enjoy living in JBR - for those that don't, please post your comments on the other thread! Good you like where you live but as an aside to satisfy my curiosity is it true most laundries are in the kitchen here? Ours is big enough to fit a bed in (assuming we wanted to!) and I have seen others much the same-maybe Bur Dubai has bigger laundries?

to get in touche with people in japan, do not use emails to mobile or telephones. twitter seems to be the best way for now. my mail to my sister's mobile didn't get through, but twitter messages got through. We have just been able to establish contact again as well - via Facebook. I have been on Facebook all night talking to my former Japanese students-some spent the night in shelters and they say public transport is chaotic-luckily they missed the worst of it

No - your tier miles stay until the end of the 12 (or 13) month period. Say you travel 28,000 miles between January and December. You receive 28,000 Skywards miles and 28,000 tier miles. If you used 25,000 miles for an upgrade in June, come December you'd still have 28,000 tier miles even though you'd only have 3,000 Skywards miles. In a nutshell, your Skywards miles are gone once you've used them but the tier miles aren't usable in that sense and they don't go anywhere until your tier miles account is wiped clean at the end of the 12 month period. They're just a record of how many miles you've flown for tier purposes. Does that make sense? I think so-he can keep his spiffy gold card till Nov-then see if he retains it depending on how far he has flown in the past 12 months

Yes clear as mud. This will make it sooo much clearer - ha ha The level you are is dependant on the amount of tier miles you earn in a year (you actualy are given about 13 months) not the amount of SKYWARD miles you earn. ..and when you use Skywards miles you lose tier miles/points too.....right?

The level you are is dependant on the amount of tier miles you earn in a year (you actualy are given about 13 months) not the amount of miles you earn. You do not get tier miles on flights paid for fully with miles, however if you pay for economy then use miles for an upgrade you get credited with the tier miles based economy, and the same for purchase business and upgrade to first you get credited with the relevant business tier miles for business for that flight.
