Are any of you charged to receive the transferred money into you bank account back home? Everytime DH sends home money we lose about €200 between the exchange rate and bank charges on the receiving end! No-we aren't

No - i tried googling it but it's not the same. Thanks anyway. It literally has sugar, honey and sesame seeds in it. Won't the second recipe I work be similar-just leave out the sunflower seeds oops - didn't see it, posted as you were posting - will try that. Thanks Hope it works-sounds yummy

I always use Al Rostamani, they charge 45dhs for any amount. Done it many times and the money gets there in 2 days max We use them too-have the plastic customer card to speed things up-and they always give better than the advertised rate-have been getting the money back to Australia in a day lately too-pretty impressive for theri charges

UAE Exchange are great because if you take in large sums of money and say "what's the best rate you can give me"...they will have a 'best rate of the day' that they can give. It may only be slightly better than what's posted, but when sending a few thousand dirhams home, it really makes a difference. I've done this a few times and said "what can you do for me....I'm sending quite a bit this time"! :) And money is always in UK & Irish banks the next day! :) We find the same with the exchange we use-I think any exchange will offer you a better rate-especially if you are a regular customer-always ask!

Have you considered taking the bus? Thanks Wuffles but NO ! I did not as no idea when it goes but reckon it will take hours ?!! I want to get there straight to the hotel as quick as possible but safely - so think i would rather drive than take the bus, at least I can listen to my music etc thanks anyway ;) Fair enough-but the buses only make one stop -if needed-at the uni-so are actually a good way to go-it takes under an hour and a half from Bur Dubai so not bad at all <em>edited by wuffles on 10/03/2011</em>

My husband is Arab and I'm American, and I've seen some cultural differences between us. His mentality is very American, but we have many Arab friends/acquaintances. I have been invited to Arabic weddings - womens weddings. The invite generally comes through him, that someone asked him to pass on to me. An invite to a wedding and I don't know the bride, groom, and may have met the person once, or not at all, who passed the invite to me through my husband. I have gone to birthday parties for children and the gifts are put aside and never opened. No follow up thank you either verbally or with a card. The "thank you" you got when you handed over the gift apparently covered it. We have gone out with friends and before getting together asked if the children can come along. We always said yes. Also included were the 2 or 3 maids who weren't shy about what they ordered - lobster, shrimp. Now there is only me and hubby, and we generally ended up picking up the bill. 4 adults, 4 children, 2 or 3 housemaids. Many times we received same day invites for special occasions. (What? they planned it that day?) People who were going to a function asked us to go along (and we didn't know the people who were hosting). Have invited people over for dinner asking they arrive a certain time, say between 8 and 8:30 PM. Think nothing of showing up 9.30 - 10 PM. Dinner totally ruined and when they apologize I tell them not to worry about it, no problem, because it's the last time they will be invited for a dinner. I told my husband that when an Arab shows up on time, he's early, when he's late, he's on time. Same issue-we have been invited to countless Arabic weddings where neither I or my husband know the couple-or even their parents-his mother may know theri aunt or somesuch. BH always wants to go and is puzzled when I can't see the point...don't get me started!

One of the old box type (can't think of the correct terminology) Panasonics-came with the company residence......can't say I am thrilled with it-but it didn't cost us anything and it works so that is a plus!

As someone mention it's a clash of cultures... For most Arabs ,invites addressed and limited to a member of the family don't exist as they will never cross their mind the host may count/care how many mouthfuls they sallow! For them a invite is a invite for the whole family and most of them don't know what RSVP stands for ! Reminds me of our wedding in Australia-my side (all Aussies) RSVP'd and turned up as per the iinvites-DH is Arabic-we didn't have a clue who was coming as they didn't RSVP-even after countless reminder phone calls)-many turned up with their children despite the invite not including them-some brought along other members of their family who were visiting them at the time-for a catered per head Aussie wedding it was a nightmare for the caterers.......Luckily the next generation seem to have a better grasp of what is expected <em>edited by wuffles on 08/03/2011</em>

Thats so strange I had the contrast dye ( 3 types ) and it made me warm lol but it doesn t hurt you need not worry for her I'm with you-made me feel warm too Maybe we re just warm people lol :)

We have the family one and always get the fine dining one too.... We're the same and have already made our money back on both, several times over. The top tip is to sort all the vouchers in the Family one into envelopes for each mall, and then when you go out, just take the relevant pack. There's so much to choose from, you need never really pay full price for anything! Love the sorting envelope idea-thanks!

Won't work till they are a wee bit bigger but my two are 16 months apart and I bought a twin stroller where the seats face in towards each othher-they seemed happy that way as they could see each other and kept each other amused. Oh-and it does get better! Mine are all grown up now and it is a distant memory!

I recently took some visitors down to the creek to check out the boats and then we took an Abra over to Bur Dubai. Was quite nice. Dear Andrea, sorry... what is Abra??? thanks The little motorised boats that chug across the creek between the spice/gold and textile markets for 1 dh-the bigger water taxis cost 4 dhs edited by wuffles on 08/03/2011 And you can hire a whole Abra for an hour for 100DH per boat which is a bargain - they take you up the creek to the floating bridge and then down to the lowest bend. Just make sure you stick to your guns to get the official rate as sometimes they try to charge tourists 100Dh per person. Our visitors always enjoy this trip, make sure you take a camera. I am sure you can bargain harder than that-I can!!!

Would she enjoy getting a bargain at Karama too? Plenty both sides of the Creek-she can see camels and a falcon by the bastikiya-explore the galleries and cultual /heritage village and diving mueum-even the camel and horse museums!!!-tour the main museum (around 3 dhs) bargain in the markets, have lunch by the Creek etc

I thank the Lord that I don't have small children here to have to do parties and people taking the p*ss in thinking that I would be a babysitting service!!! I'm so grateful that I can just send my teenage DS with a booty bag (from the Milkman!) to a party of his choice and where he can sleep it off if need be!!! I must be out of the loop! I am in the same loop as you wuffles and it is a long way from Mariana. At home I would spend the equivilant of 100 - 150aed per gift and wouldn't dream of offering cash or vouchers instead especially for a under 13 year old. Mine used to take the equivalent of about $10 in primary school and the equivalent of a CD price for secondary-guess it would be a bit more now but there are limits!

just wondering...do the uninvited siblings bring separate gifts? I can't answer, as we never attend a party were one of my kids 5 and 3 1/2 been uninvited...We always attend together, as at this age, they don't have their own and only friends ! Usually our budget varies according to the relation we have with the child and the family As a scale is between 300 to 1000dhs.I will call in advance to ask what to buy as a gift or do they prefer the cash or the GV ,and we mention the budget . That is such a huge amount of money-wouldn't spend that on my own 20 something year old children! I must be out of the loop!

My friend's sister was in the same dilemma but found a cute solution. She made and printed cards off the computer that were like cinema passes and said "this pass is valid for one individual only." No unwanted guests and she didn't come off as rude either. Brilliant solution :)

Let me know if you find a way round-our 22 year old DS-also from Australia would love to come-he has already finished uni though. We don't have a car so 30 day visa runs are difficult and expensive. We had him over for a few months when he was 18-the only negative is they cost you a fortune when they aren't working!

OARA-it supports research into our son's rare birth defect-and funds are always needed because so few children have his syndrome. As it is parent-based all money raised goes straight into research rather than admisitration too.

Thanks for your replies everyone. I will pass the information on and get him to have a look at what is available in those areas. I have managed to get a place for my daughter at JESS AR which is why I was looking at that area so that she could walk/cycle to school. I am glad that the commute isn't 3 hours anymore - that sounds horrendous! He has said about an hour is feasible, so we will have to see. Thanks again :) Unless you are right next to the school walking or cycling isn't likely to be a safe or comfortable option in the heat

Maybe I am a cynic but this seems like a free ad-not sure 20% off is 'amazing ' either..... hmmm... and its not really 20% off... it's 20% cash-back meaning you don't get money off your purchase, you get to buy more from their store (in which they probably make more money in the long run) Any ad that appears on 3 different forums from a new poster rings alarm bells for me....
