Hey-be nice-went to the Al Ain Classics Festival last nght to hear Yo Yo Ma play and the whole concert was brilliantly arranged....free shuttle buses from Dubai-free coffee on arrival and leaving-great venue at al Jahili Fort etc

Be greeted with a hello wherever you go :) Be trailed in a store like a potential shop lifter :( Agree re shoplifter bit - I usually ask them why they're following me. Makes me cross (maybe I look like a crim? Lol!) Much more fun to quietly give them something to do-put the coathangers back on the rack facing the opposite way etc.....once slowly turned a whole row of camels to face the shop wall and watched the poor assistant itching for me to move so she could rearrange them! Shadowing brings out the worst in me....

Never lived somewhere where I didn't need a car before so little thinks like walking to the mall, walking along the Creek at night etc are great. I also love bargaining so Karama and the Souqs are fun coming from a country with fixed prices. Also being able to take a taxi without thinking it will cost an arm and a leg!

Yep-the one upstairs in Jumeirah (sp?) Plaza-the one with the pink roof-has quilting and patchwork suppliies etc are you sure it's Jumeirah plaza? bc Town Center had pinkish color as well.. do you know the name of that shop? Sign on the window says the Quilt Shop-sells Bernina sewing machines-the other is in the Mall-Town Centre? next to Mercato

Just to add Choitrams magazine sell Pashmina's for 14 AED each, if you don't want to go to Karama. Maybe Carrefour would have them too. 10 at Carrefour and 9 or less at the markets but the OP said she took those last time........

The camel chocolates are quite expensive at the airport, especially for 20 women! They were at least 50AED for a small camel shaped chocolate. I would be going towards the pashmina's for 10- 15 AED each, and it's something they can keep forever. Some women would rather not have chocolate as diets etc. They were given pashminas last time!

We didn't realize the series of concerts was on till we visited the fort on Friday afternoon, or we'd have been there like a shot. I'm glad you enjoyed it. Will look out for a similar series of concerts next year. How did you find out about it, please? Is there a site apart from EW from which you can get useful information? I think he still has one more concert at Emirates Palace in the next day or two-different programme but no doubt still great-we wanted the one where he played the most!

All our towels and bedlinen are white and came with our housing package 6 years ago and are sadly still going strong. I bought a couple of nicer towels for the visitors and one set of sheets for us because I couldn't resist the palm tree borders......would love an excuse to buy more but what we have is going strong-perhaps not having a maid has its advantages!

Unfortunately Diera City Centre, Dubai Mall and all the Spinneys outlets for Magrudys have closed. Rent is very high so yes, that has been a major factor in the decision. Times are not great for any shops these days and Magrudys has been affected too. Think the Mercato Spinney'sone is still open-for now

JLT is nice walllah? for 400k? How about Deira? Karama? Hamriyah? ROFL! And your problem with those places is.........????? We live in Bur Diubai which is a hop skip and a jump from those 3 and wouldn't move for any budget

I never buy books here, get them online or when I'm home. so much cheaper. Really-drat-more understandable there given the competition I guess. I don't buy many here but sometimes get desperate for a good read-wonder how long before they all close.....

I imagine that the local Borders are franchises and owned not directly by Borders but by local companies that pay for the rights to use Borders' name and receive Borders' merchandising. But as long as we have Kinokuniya at the Dubai Mall or Magrudy's, I won't be missing Borders. And who knows about your last statement, mmm? ;) But how long will we have Magrudy's-they have already closed at Burjuman and Deira City Centre-who will be next?

Yes, Khalid bin al Waleed is right outside the Burjuman Centre. When I've had visitors, we've metro-ed there and always taken a taxi from there to the Old Souk/Textile Souk and Museum bit, rather than waiting for the bus, then walked down to Heritage Village and the old Sheikh's house, retraced our steps and had lunch at Beit al Wakheel on the waterfront right next to Bur Dubai abra station, hopped on a 1dhs abra across to the Gold Souk and Spice Souk on the Deira side, then taxi-ed or bussed back up to Union station to go home. Or you could taxi/bus back up to Deira City Centre if you wanted to end up at the movies or a mall, but to be honest every time I've done it I'm too stuffed to face the prospect of a mall (note to self: must go back to the gym...) It's a good day out and while youre in Bur Dubai have a look in the clothes shops one block back - the stuff on the ground floor is all a bit cheapie, but upstairs is Fakes Heaven! I never bother with the taxi-it isn't far to walk-especially when the weather is nice and cool

I didn't find them at all rude-find they have a fascination with all things Australian-even me!!!!!! I guess you can find rude people anywhere but we have had some lovely trips there-and the best food!

I wouldn't-would give it all to my very best friend who has a severlely disabled daughter who is nearly 40 now-she is absolutely obsessed with Disneyland so I would hire a private jet from Australia-(she needs that as she needs help with toiletting)-enough to pay for her daughter, herself and another carer so mum could enjoy the holiday too-oh =if only I were rich enough to do it-dream on............ That is really sweet of you. I hope and pray your friend's daughter's wish will get fulfilled very soon. I do too-we have been planning the trip for years but just can't find a way to make it happen-it is not nice of me-she gets so much pleasure out of even the simplest things it would be a joy just to see her face if she ever made it there

Yep-down there-2 different guys with camels-one either side of the embassy-though of course they trott (is that the right word!) up and down the creek with their riders-One guy just has a camel-the other a horse and pony or two as well-assume they are there every night-they have been when I have gone down so fingers crossed

We got there at 4pm on the dot-not everything was up and running but Iran was so we sampled heaps of sweets and bought some for gifts-delicious-agree the Turkish plates are lovely-and you can bargain for a good price-I also likes Syria and some of the offerings in India-got lovely hand dyed throws for under 40 dhs-don't think BH will let me go back again-I get too tempted!!!

I would live exactly where I am -even though it wouldn't make much of a hole in your budget! We are in the new consulate area near the Creek-nice and quiet as the consulates are not open at night. Can walk down the creek every night and enjoy the sights and sounds of Dubai-can bargain in the markets-hop an abra across the creek and wander through the gold and spice markets-walk through the Indian districts and Karama-and still be within 5 minutes walk of Burjuman mall and the Metro. I love this area-there is always something going on-at the moment it is the shopping festival market by the creek so we have loads of cultural displays going on and live music-and even camel and horse rides if that takes your fancy. The dinner boats ply up and down brightly lit and there is always a cricket match going on on the grassed areas. The call to prayer from the Creek mosque sounds amazing close to water.A 10 minutes walk gets me to the Bastikiya area and museum-a bit further and I have Heritage Village and more. We have been here 6 years-still have no car-and nether does BH-taxis are plentiful anyway and the buses are good.

Hello ladies! So happy to have found this forum. I just moved to Dubai from the States after spending 2 months here last year. Since I've been back I've noticed my hair has been falling out far more than normal. Since I don't have health insurance I have been trying to do my own research and there seems to be a lot of potential causes - including hard water in the shower. I'm curious if anyone else has experienced the same thing. Any advice would be appreciated! If you use Outlook sync phone regularly with it and not just phone numbers but the calendar too.... here's a tip that was passed on to me eons ago by an organised friend: In Outlook create a category called "Birthdays" with a bright colour and in Outlook add birthdays as recurring events allocated to this category... that way they stand out so you shouldn't forget them and they'll appear in the calendar on your phone so you can check it when you are out shopping. (I've added the year of birth to all my under-18 relatives birthday entries so its easy to see what sort of pressie/card to buy) For contacts in Outlook I've created categories too; family, friends, restaurants etc - these got passed to my Nokia phone but not to my current Android-based one (grrr). My default Outlook contact view is by category so I can find the details I need quickly Also have added most commonly used addresses over the years so can now print labels for letters or cards or at least have the address to hand when on hols wanting to write postcards. I always back up my Outlook file each month (learned that lesson the hard way) but still keep a paper record in the form of my trusty address book. Finally, which will probably mark us out as a pair of IT geeks, I send DH appointments for events we do together whilst he sends me his travel info the same way so I know when he's going to be away! edited by SusieH on 15/02/2011 You make me feel like a dinosaur with my shabby address book-funny thing is though when my techno-savy daughter was doing her wedding invites my old book was the only thing she wanted was the old address book as it was actually up to date!

my Dh took me to the mall of the emirates ... he bought me a steam iron ............ 15 sets of wooden hangers .............. and a knife block with the knifes having the sharpest edges in the world............. Now i'm deciding .... whilst he's watching the football ......... which suit to chop one leg off and which shirt to ACCIDENTLY iron mark .......................... One team, one wallet = if I want something I'll get it when I want to get it, not wait for him to 'surprise me' with something I don't really care for, and I'm not going to pay upscaled prices to buy something I don't want for the sake of celebrating a holiday that has no purpose. My husband loved me yesterday. He'll love me tomorrow. He doesn't love me more today. And he doesn't love me any less because he didn't take me for a meal with money we could use for something we actually want. (I noticed a couple of Australians with the same sentiments - is this inbred into us at school/birth?) I am sure it is-can remember being told from a very young age that so called Hallmark holidays were not important-didn't stop dad hiding romantic notes around the house all through the year for my mum to find-she was still finding them years after he died <em>edited by wuffles on 14/02/2011</em>

I made a scrap book for a road trip/holiday i did. I got the supplies in Deira City Centre at that bookshop near virgin...i think its a Magrudy's bookshop Just to let you know that particular Magrudys is now closed-grrrrrrrrrr REALLY! its been ages since i have been in there...i have to say i thought i noticed boards up at NEXT as well...was that refurbed or closed too? maybe rents are too high? They said it wasn't economically viable-the Burjuman one cloesed too-Try Daseo (sp) at Lamcy for bits and pieces for scrapbooking too
