Thank you for your replies :) Yes, I think I would have to get taxis at either end of the journey each day. I tyhink I will do a test run of the journey next week to see exactly how long it takes me and costs, because the cost of taxis will add up at the end of the month! Good idea-but factor in that the roads are a lot quieter during school holidays so your journey will be quicker

They have to pick someone, don't they? I've also been picked out and frisked, as passenger and as crew, it's part of travel these days I'm afraid... Of course they should be polite and nice but you can't really complain about having a security check, sorry... And France being France, they pick the veiled woman. I will never let my mom fly through CDG again. On the way back, same story! Goes both ways though-my sonewhat unconventional 23 yare old son-who has long hair and a nose ring and an individual taste in clothes and boots and such always gets searched coming into Dubai-even when he is with me-he just shrugs and lets them get on with it-but always has himself, his luggage and hand luggage searched very thoroughly-we allow an extra hour for him to get through customs now. Wonder what they think when they discover his trusty stuffed monkey in this security threat's suitcase! <em>edited by wuffles on 11/07/2012</em>

Taking the kids on the metro today to kill a few hours..... Is moe the best undercover car park? If so where's the nearest place to park for it? Any other good car parks out the sun.? edited by fairycakeyumm on 11/07/2012 MOE allows you 4 hours free parking and you walk through the mall to reach the metro (entrance is above carrefour) Ibn Battuta parking area is directly next to the metro but its exposed to the sun, and Dubai Mall is quite far from the metro itself. You could park in the Nakheel Harbour station next to Discovery Gardens which has a massive car park attached to the metro but its been so empty that I am expecting them to close it. If you heading towards Rashidya destination on any platform make sure you get on the very front of the train because its a glassed front and they will be able to see much more. Enjoy. Just remember the front heading towards Jebal Ali is the first class end! Deira has parking close to the Metro too -just depends what is close to you

Last time we flew with them we had an hour's transit time-but the first plane was delayed by 40 minutes or so-just made the connection running all the way-much prefer a bit more time between transfers-I hour is cutting it fine

Am I the only one who can't see the need for a phone to play games-my ancient Nokia makes and takes calls-no camera-no apps-no nothing-and like it like that! Drives me crazy to see people sitting together for lunch fiddling around on their phones and not talking to each other. Sat on the metro the other day and the couple next to us texted each other the whole way......

Wooden abras are 1 dh each way (have coins-they don't like to change money while steering the boat with one foot!) The red water taxis that only run a couple of fixed routes-eg Baniyas Station to the silk market are 4 dhs each way-often you have them to yourself anyway. (Pay at the crrekside kiosks) Booked water taxis-the newest addition-are way more expensive. You can also book abras for yourself and guests for an hourly rate-which is negotiable on quieter days! <em>edited by wuffles on 09/07/2012</em>

My maid has just told me that she would love to have a sewing machine as she loves to sew and make things. Her daughter gave her some money to help buy one but she was asking me if I could help her find something on Dubizzle as she doesn't know how to look for things on there. I had a look but NOTHING!! So I'd like to help her to buy a new one. But I am CLUELESS. I did a quick search and you can buy sewing machines for anything from 300Dhs to thousands. Clearly the higher end stuff is rather professional and not what she needs. But if I get her a 500Dhs one, is it going to be decent?? I know how to compare computers but not sewing machines!! Are there any particular specs I should be paying attention to or is a sewing machine a sewing machine?? On souq then have a brand called Janome that I've never heard of but DH says is quite well known and they have ones for a few hundred. The only brand I know is Singer and I don't know if they do ones for just a few hundred. Am on my way to Carrefour and to Geant today so thought I'd have a peak in there but any advice would be very much appreciated. Thanks very much. I have one.. I wanted to sell.. It works well, and has all the discs for emb etc.. I got it as a present and I don't use it.. let me know if you are considering a used one. I could be interested but will be coming and going till September so if it is still available then could you please email me the model number and details-never had one that did decent embroidery. I'll give a go. Someone told me to rub a pencil on it too?!? Any graphite spray should work-I use WD 40-fixes squeaky doors and stubborn locks too-can't be without it-Carrefour stocks it-and many other places too. Don't use too much though-only needs a drop

funny maybe you can explain why anyone would be interessted in "stars" and their lifes ... I coulsn't care less. And each time anyone wants to tell me anything about a "famous" person he'/she gets that blank look from me as I really really don't know whom they talk about... Do you really need such a big container if you are looking at fully furnished places?-not sure if we were lucky but our company apartment had everything down to the last teaspoon-which was just as well as when we came from Australia we had a less than generous 40 kg relocation baggage limit from the company. Mind you when we eventually go back we may well need a part container-amazing what you accumulate!

We will be taking back furniture when we go-pity we only have a 40kg shipping allowance and will have to pay though! Thanks Wuffles. I assume there is a thriving second hand market if we need to sell on? Are shipping costs exhorbitant? Would what we pay to ship buy us new things when we are ready to furnish a new home? You can easily on-sell through eBay. I guess by the time you factor in shipping prices would be comparable for furniture-but we have some lovely pieces bought here which we could never find back in Australia

My son and I spend 4 nights in a family room at Marlborough House in Bath last year and loved it-not the cheapest guest house but if you read the reviews on trip advisor you will see nothing but good. The host Peter is a long time Bath resident and a font of information on everything from where to dine to where to buy a cheap suitcase to fit all those extra purchases in. Helped us with adaptors as we had brought the wrong ones and even lugged our suitcases and a heater up 4 flights of stairs as we were cold after the heat of Dubai. If you contact him directly on the hotle web site you may get a cheaper rate than that quoted-we did-also a discount for cash. Free nternet too. Couldn't fault the place-or the big vegetarian breakfasts (it is vegetarian all the way oif that bothers you).

Depends on the size of the furniture...but I would always, always tip them though...more if they then move some existing furniture for me to accommodate the new stuff...I give the money to the main guy, but make sure I do it in front of the others and make a point of saying it's for them all... No nothing to rearrange-desk and chair aren't big-would have fitted in our car had we had one....

Thanks-come from a country where tipping doesn't really exist and am so uncomfortable with amounts to give-the pieces aren't heavy-as I said just a chair and a desk-but they look so hopeful! Must say I wouldn't have thought of a drink as they are just coming from the van up the lift-so thanks for that.

I had some glass tops made for my table a few weeks ago. I was just told to go to Satwa, stop outside Emirates bank and look across the road. There are quite a few glass shops in that vicinity and you just can't miss them. I think the one I used was called Glass Sea or somethibg very similar. Thanks so much-will try that-was the cost reasonable?

We recently got glass for on top of two wood tables, we simply took the measurements to a glass cutting shop in Satwa (on the corner of the main car park on the same street as Ravis) It took about 3 days for the glass to be ready. Hi Disney Sorry just saw your reply. Thanks for this wil be heading to satwa during the week to get some abaya and dresses tailored so will add an extra stop. Can you give slightly more detailed directions-can't quite picture where you mean

We're in an apartment and aren't allowed to dry clothes on the balcony. Just put everything on the clothes rack in the laundry each morning and they are always dry by night time. We do have a drier but only rarely use it to soften the towels.

Thanks littleone for the Trading post site- yikes some of the used prices list are the same as what I'd pay new in the States- I guess I should have looked into this before I went back to the States earlier! basil, thanks for the agent and CBD area info. Someone told me that the KitchenAid Mixer in Australia was $800! But then again, I've noticed that people advise others to buy everything in Australia before coming to Dubai and the other way around, so I I'm a little confused. I guess I'll just buy anything that looks like good value here and get the rest down there. Does anyone know of good DSS deals? Ebay (Australia) is usually way cheaper than the Trading Post-try that first-better selection too

It's kind of annoying though, that the news are [b'>carrying on like [/b'>[b'>p0rk chops[/b'>. showing 'footage' of soda bottles spilled in the supermarket. IMHO very insensitive to the poor people in Christchurch who have just been through far, far worse... ha ha - I have not heard that for a while, my SIL always says it but when I ask her why that particular phrase she cannot tell me. Guilty of using the expression too though not sure I knew the origins stated here: "This expression is a truncated version of the longer and more widespread phrase be like a p*rk chop in a synagogue; this has been around since the 1950s. Since p*rk is forbidden food for Jewish people, to describe something as being like a p*rk chop in a synagogue means that it is highly inappropriate, embarrassingly out of place, and quite unwelcome. Getting old-can't recall the exact year-but we have certainly had once since I came to Dubai 7 years ago-couch moved across the floor and a rug fell off the wall-BH still hasn't put it back up-he doesn't like being rushed.............

Hubby is staying in Nar Nar Goon at the moment ( about 50kms from Moe), and said everything shook for about 10 seconds.Took a few minutes to realise what was happening. Scary. Mother in law was on her couch in Cheltenham-said it moved with her on it-and she is no lightweight!

Al Barari remote? Hardly. It's off Emirates Road near Global Village, DSO and Arabian Ranches. Close to Dubai Mall, Mirdif City Centre and Festival City. Same with Al Barsha. It might be a shock to some but Dubai does not begin and end in Jumeirah. It is remote if you are used to living in Bur Dubai and rely on public transport to get everywhere!

Pretty sure the amount of Vitamin D you get through glass in very low-did a Google search which seems to confirm this. Also if your windows at home are tinted (like mine) doubt there is much benefit at all

Just had a horrible experience with Dragonmart. Went with DH and after a while, we picked some fabric and they promised to be ready in 1.5hrs. We came back 2 hours later, still not ready, by this point I was ready to faint as their a/c is terrible. While they were finishing up, I checked if they had done the tie backs, they hadn't so this was another 20 mins waiting for them to finish. We got the curtains home, and they were covered in loose threads, snagged stitches and to top it all off DH had made the wrong measurements (cms not inches!) Still - we were not happy with the quality and wanted to return them. They did not allow this - no returns altho this was stated no where on the receipt or in the shop. They even have a sign inside saying "Know your Consumer Rights" yet surely my rights are that if I am not happy with the quality and even they could see threads hanging off, then I should have the right to return the items? Ugh - if you do go there, make sure you pick professional people and check their work before you get ti home and refuse to pay until you're happy with what you get. Not sure that shops any where in the world would accept returns on cut fabric-especially when you made the mistake with measurements-wasn't it obvious they were 2.5 times smaller than they should have been when you collected them? As for loose threads can't see that as a major drama as it is easily fixed-given the short time frame they had to make them and the confined spaces they work in I would expect that anyway. Under three hours seems like a pretty good turn around even if they had quoted you a faster time frame.

The reference to PA may mean PRO (Personal Resource Officer I think...they work for companies / free zone offices and do 'stuff' for staff and families...like standing in line for ID cards / visas and so on). DH and I were lounging in the pool on Saturday having a giggle at how strung out we were in Dec 2010 just before we came...it was a surreal time. My DH / DD came out a month before me so she could start school and I couldn't wind up my job in London until end Jan, so they flew out without me. We wanted to come and were so excited about it but it was still very, very stressful; as we were meeting various friends in the last couple of weeks DH asked me to ask them not to mention Dubai as he was so stressed!! You say "this is big"; without a doubt it is but it's a huge adventure and a fantastic place to live. As someone said in another post earlier...you're a long time dead! You also say you live in upstate New York, which is of course lovely however what is the commute time to the office? Having replaced an hour long commute in London with a 10 minute drive to the office here, I cannot tell you how wonderful that is!!!

An open mind and PA are the most important things to make sure you arrive with for sure. We looked at AR but opted for The Villa. AR is nice and equipped with pools, tennis etc, but all come with a premium, we compromised on facilities and went for value. I have an open mind, but not sure what a PA is. I doubt you mean PA as in personal asst, but if you do, in my dreams!!! Re the Villa, I keep hearing nice things about it. Is it that much further out than AR? PA+ Positive Attitude
