My brother did this on his farm up Neerim South way. Had a huge garage/workshop built and lived in that for well over a year. He had a generator set up and put in a pot belly stove so power and warmth weren't an issue. His wife was pregnant when he began and seemed to find it do-able. He loved being on site and being more involved in the building than would have been possible if he had stayed in town. I suspect the least you would need is the garage built and lined-a caravan and four children confined in wet weather would try anyones patience! Hi Wuffles.....is your brother a teacher and did he build a mud brick house? I used to teach and live at Neerim South and knew a couple who lived in their shed while building. A beautiful part of Victoria! The main house wasn't but he was building a second one-as you do-in the middle of Neerim's State forest land and that may well have been-his first name was graham if that rings a bell.

Hello Sgilli, sounds awesome ...but personally living with my brothers and sisters in a small space would drive me insane! The siblings I have know who have been home schooled seem to develop skills to get on well with each other which hopefully will help in this situation

Well if you can get a nice warm shed set up-go for it! The children can start to make friends locally and join in some activities and you can all get planting! All the best whatever you decide Land is in same town where we are ( just out of town a bit) so already have friends here. Perhaps you need to make a trip out to help us with the planting. The offer is there- you are more than welcome ....lol Not sure about trees but I learnt to use post hole diggers with great dexterity-and catch sheep too while he built his-he was most miffed I could upend a sheep faster than he could!!! Such a useful skill too.... Sorry-in Dubai at the minute or I could come and help-shame that!

No wildlife as such where we are- its all farming paddocks ( we will be only house on our road - just surrounded by sheep and cattle farms, and olive groves) Have got most of our fencing done ( needed to as part of our planning permits to show we were actually going to farm our land), and we pick up 80 fruit trees in the middle of July (have planning for 300). Just the logistics of trying to start the (hobby)farm will be easier with us being there full time ( to be able to water crops when needed etc). Both DH and my brother are in the construction industry so thankfully have many good contacts, and have also sourced many from town (like your brother, this is only a very small town, so we try and support it by using local products/services) Well if you can get a nice warm shed set up-go for it! The children can start to make friends locally and join in some activities and you can all get planting! All the best whatever you decide

Hello Wuffles! Neerim Sth way is lovely.Very nice and green! Shed will be fully lined, and van will be undercover, in the carport section of shed. Shed will be like your brothers- large garage/workshop- men and their sheds! Like your brother,building wise its much easier to be on site- especially when doing it yourself. Added bonus for them was they both started to work locally-one as a teacher-the other as a nurse so they networked in the community-found the best contractors and rates etc too. Also my brother ended up with the best 'dog house' in the sticks as his workshop once all was finished!!!! Also not sure if it is a consideration for you but he got his property listed for wildlife conservation so was on site to see the wombats and such were kept a watchful eye on. Also had his, fencing, gardens and veggies all set by the time the house was done

Well this is the first DSS weekend...:) so open your purses and enjoy the sales and Modhesh ;) There are tons of malls that offer huge discounts and lots of family entertainment!! And with the heat, best to stay in till it cools off in 2 months!! Where do you live?! If your in Deira, Al Ghurair Centre has some amazing family based entertainment this DSS and even Deira City Centre should be good... DCC will be insanely busy! Most DSS sales already started last week so hopefully there are still bargains to be had

.06/2012 I think it is easier with certain hair types too-I have very fine silky hair and find it nigh on impossible to wear any sort of scarf or shayla-f there is a trick to this I'd love to know it! Maybe one of the big hair pieces/clips the girls here wear would help the shayla stay in place? Or you could try a small hair pin to hold it in place. Half the fun seems to be having to frequently re-wrap the shayla, from what I've seen, so you should be ok. :) I have tried that-without much luck sadly-guess I wasn't born to be elegant! Luckily BH's traditional costume is Palestinian and I don't need to cover my hair when I wear that one. Some women wear something like this under a scarf to ensure that no hair is showing. There are also headbands which do the same thing. It also helps hold up a scarf. Some of the thicker type fabrics dont slip off as much. For the chiffon-type shaylas ones I wear a thick fabric headband underneath so that the chiffon has something else to cling onto other than my hair. ThanksI did get a headband-but even that slips off at times-better than nothing though!

Or these ones who wear it when they really hate the cultural association but want to pretend they are part of the culture they hate as hey feel they are treated better when wearing it - that's just silly to me. . I was going to say that some people, more men perhaps, do wear local dress so that they will be considered local and be treated better in shops, restaurants etc. If I were local, I'd get annoyed about people doing this. I'm quite good about putting on a shayla, just from watching girls working at the bank etc redoing theirs :-). I think the trick is to place it on your head so that one side hangs down longer than the other. Anyone know if those little cabanas around Souk Al Bahar/Palace are part of a restaurant? (You can see them standing on the Burj side looking towards the Palace hotel) Mango Tree has good views. Do you mean the cabanas surrounding the pool at the hotel?

I had sole POA for my mum as she felt that was easier than having my brother and I share it and I have joint POA with my husband for my mother in law-as I am home more often than my husband. We have already set ours up too as well as an authority for our kids to act on our behalf to in medical emergencies

We are the same Wuffles. Think we've only had it on during the day this year for about ten minutes! Have it on at night though. Do like a freezing room under the duvet :D Ours is never on at night AND I use my electric blanket!

Have you rung someone to come and change the broken light bulb? My dh does that. I'm always embarrassed when they come. Me too-but I'd be sitting in the dark if I waited for DH to do it!

Sometimes I put ours on when my husband gets home from work hot from the taxi ride-but only for 5 minutes maximum-honestly haven't needed to use it yet-our building is a nice cool one

Yes you have to get onto the red line and drop off at deira city centre metro station Thanks for that - as there was a station on the official map called Deira Palm!! that confused me, so it's definately called Deira Metro Station? It is called Deira City Centre Station-no need to change trains-it is a direct line from Rashidiya-just look for the DCC signs to take the right exit once you get off-basically follow 90% of the other passengers and you won't go wrong!

hey .. i would like to know.. from where can i get fabric.. where is textile souq???? plssss suggest... and also would like to know from where i will get cheap batting to put inside the quilt.. regards The textile souq is In Bur Dubai-by the Creek-also cheap fabric in nearby al Fahidi Street-better fabric at the Town Centre Jumeirah-or in the Patchwork Shop in Jumeirah Plaza- (the pink one). I find it better to order mine from the USA-better range and prices-even with shipping. As for batting-don't economise-a cheap batting will ruin your lovely quilt-especially if you plan to wash it-either buy it from one of the 2 quilt shops or ship/bring it in from home

Our phone number is one number off the Commonwealth Bank loan approvals number in Australia-it was a misprint in their directory which they seemed unwilling to fix. Got to the stage where I caught my then 6 year old politely answering the phone and saying "Sorry sir, your loan hasn't been approved"......I explained to her it wasn't the right thing to do (and wondered how many other times she had done it!) and wonder to this day if she was believed!

Thanks Wuffles and Purple...just got some stool tests back and they are negative to any parasite (however there is very clearly something going on in his small intestines when looking at ultra sound), so its looking more and more like Celiac, but with a small chance that it is something else of course - will hopefully know by Thursday. Thanks ladies - you seem to be much braver than me... You'll be fine-promise-much easier when you know what you are dealing with-good news there aew no parasites-look for the positives!

1. proper internet cafes in all malls and areas like JBR ... a tourist or newbie without a laptop hasnt a hope. Its a weird system cos every other city in the world, even poor run down towns in the middle of Africa, India etc all have at least one token internet cafe. They have one in the Burjuman :) maybe just not in new Dubai! Lamcy has one too-plenty round Bur Dubai and Karama

The waiting is the worst isn't it. At least the results will hopefully know what you are dealing with which is better than worrying about the unknown-and if he does have it it sounds like you have a network of friends with experience of it to draw on. My son was born without an oesophagus so couldn't eat at all-it is amazing how you find the strength to cope though. I think we find it much harder than the children do. Hope the test results come back soon. Thanks Wuffles - sorry I shouldn't complain when hearing stories like yours. My friends don't live in Dubai, but one of them had the advantage, if you want to call it that, of discovering her son's Celiac at a very early age as he has a severe case. So right from an early age, he was never able to taste certain foods which my DH is already used to. So, I believe the hardest part will be seeing him 'suffer' and not truly understand why he cant have what his friends have at a b'party - when he could have it before. I think you are right about the parents finding it harder - we are responsible for what we put into their little mouths and this is a whole new level of organization with meal preparation and planning before you travel... plus siblings will probably cop the raw end of the deal because it's not fair for one to have something that the other can't. Ohhhhh...How does you DS eat? Once he was 2 they used part of his stomach to make a small oesophagus-before that he was fed directly into his stomach-he still eats little "normal' food-I agree parties were the worst as a child-you do need to let parents know what your child can and can't eat-and be sure they believe you-those informal lunch swaps at school can be an issue too! He even skipped having his 21st-which made me a bit sad. I always cooked him different meals to the rest of the family so you do need to be organised-which I am not! He now pretty much maintains his diet himself-though he somethimes sins and tries to eat Maccas-suffers afterwards but figures it is worth it!

I've used some low resolution photos in my photo books too and in spite of the warnings you really can't pick them-obviously they look better in smaller sizes-I wouldn't use them as a full page spread

I know the stores stock them but never quite understood why only the guitar gets special treatment-my two lefties played the cello and viola as well as many other instruments without any adaptations and never had an issue

All flavours of Golden Circle Cordial from Australia (although, some years ago they said they were not able to produce the supply as they'd earlier gone into the Japanese market and taken off so they were just meeting demand) All Arnotts Biscuits (from Australia, again), including Iced Vo-Vos, Lemon Crispy, Kingstons, Monte Carlo, Scotch Finger Biscuits...
