Almost all expats in Vietnam have some sort of help around the house. Generally many expats hire a maid/nanny on a full time live in basis or part time on an hourly basis. Many families also employ a driver. It is easy to find a maid from the recommendations of your real estate agent or the person that’s helping you settle in.
Household staff is affordable and many people choose to have a maid, nanny, cook or driver, in order to make their lives more manageable and also to have someone to help with Vietnamese translations. Many household staff may not speak English when you first hire them, however they will pick the language up quickly.
It is very important to speak to your neighbours in order to ascertain what they pay their domestic staff. All the ladies tend to gossip with each other and discuss salaries so paying too little or too much is never a good thing. There are different rates for live in staff as opposed to part time staff. Ensure that you discuss salaries with your friends and colleagues so that you’re paying a fair wage.
How to find a maid
Many people hire maids through the recommendations of their neighbours, friends or colleagues at work. Others, especially those requiring the services of a nanny, turn to agencies where the employees are regulated. Many people are concerned about theft by the maid and think that they may have trust issues, which is why recommendations are so important.
