- Helper (for maid) - Kids (for children) With Izzy on the Helper one! No word makes me irrationally angry :) but I agree with the word helper. I feel people use it when they seem to find Maid somehow not a polite terminology. Helper to me does not sound like a job, I use the word maid. We have a maid, not a helper. There is no need to feel bad calling someone a maid if that is what their job is. It is what it is.

Concert finished. Michael Buble was fantastic but really sitting at the Lower grandstand it felt like watching people watching a concert. It was too far away, too much space between "us" and "them". This did not feel like right venue for his concert. But he was so good.

The more I read this forum sometimes I feel really happy that I am at peace and happy where I live. That I live in a country that I like and don't feel hostile about. I would not want to be in a situation where I did not. Can't be that nice.

Why are some people almost upset when someone considers it home here. Weird attacks on people. I am a happy home owner. We bought three years ago and feel very pleased with our decision. Our house is in Meadows and no it is not run down or shabby, Paying rent did not appeal to us as we had drowned a fortune in rent for over a decade. So we bought when the prices where down. We don't even care that prices now are high as we would not sell, it is our home and our lives are here and we feel really settled in Dubai. Even if the prices go down, one day we will go back with what we invested rather than lose rent money. We have been here for 15 years, and plan to be for many more years to come. But I think the prices might come so it might be a good idea to wait a little if you plan to purchase. Good luck whatever you decide.

I am from Finland and happen to be going there this Xmas with my family too. You fly from Dubai to Helsinki with Finnair and then again with Finnair to Rovaniemi where Santa's village is. You will love the reindeer and husky rides, Northern Lights, the Xmas feel. You can try staying one night in Ice hotel, try the Joulukka experiences (check their website), if you have time to visit the world's most northern Zoo with Nordic and arctic animals, cross Arctic Circle and even experience the Sampo icebreaker. Finnish Lapland is incredible. They can even arrange there for a reindeer ride that pick you up from the airport!

If you continue to help her this way, she will continue to use you. You don't owe advance anything, she should manage with her own salary. Maids are not charity cases, they have a job, get a salary, like all of us do. My maid asked us after three months with us for 15,000 dhs as a loan to buy a house in Philippines. My husband looked at her and asked; how much would the house cost? She said Dhs 15,000 (apparently that is how cheap they are in her village) so we said: So your plan to finance your house would be 100% through us. So no, we did not give anything but my husband advised her on her spending habits and save more because even for us buying a house was a serious investment and we had to save lot. I think a genuine emergency cases can happen to anyone, those we would judge separately. I still cannot believe that our maid asked from us 100% of what she perceived as a house cost after THREE months with us.

I need to add Pinata can be tricky like it was at my daughter's then (few years' ago) nursery mate's birthday party . Pinata would not break, it went on and on, then finally the dad gives it some kung fu kicks, no luck, then what can be called stabs it with scissors and makes an opening with his hands for unwrapped sweets like smarties and haribos sweets falling on to the sand and kids picking sandy sweets off the ground and parents going: Don't eat that, it is all covered in sand". And dad lecturing the mum about the piñata choice. Although otherwise it was a great party.

I was bitten by a bat whilst in the mountains in Europe. How I know this is I felt the wings and softness on my neck and a sting whilst sitting outside on a terrace and something flew inside. There it was hanging upside down from a curtain rod. We handled the whole thing all wrong - total panic and my husband threw a towel on it and it fell on the floor. We did not know that bats cannot fly from flat surface, they need to drop from a height to take off. So the little baby bat was there on the floor unable to go anywhere and totally scared off us. We managed to release it outside. it is not allowed to kill them in Europe. The bite is not big at all and certainly not what I thought it would be. Both me and my husband got the post bite vaccines, had to go for several ones to complete the course. During this episode we learnt that very few bats actually even have rabies. I am sure it is those mosquito bites, my kids have all sorts when we are out walking. But I understand your worry.

Every year these questions come up because there is so much confusion about maid off days. It is not helped that different contracts exist. For example our maid contract mentions nothing about public holidays, or even days off. Nothing at all. But we have been here for 15 years so we know the deal in a way. Maids do not fall under labor law so it is always a bit more grey area. That is not to say everyone would love a day off but Dubai is open and lots of people work so no need to feel bad if a maid needs to work if you have a busy house. We are busy this Eid with many guests (we are a mixed couple of two religions) so my maid will get at best half a day off. Last year she got two. But this Xmas she will get 9 days off as we will travel. Every Xmas we give Xmas Eve, Xmas Day and Boxing Day too. So we go by what suits us as a family. She is Christian so prefers Christian holidays. There is no obligation to give off every religious holiday. Just be fair and give days off in lieu when you can.

I totally agree with most of the comments here. Maid is a domestic worker and as such should help with general duties around the house. When we start itemizing everything, it becomes a joke. She should help you where you need help with, and it has nothing to do with what that the maid next door has as her list of duties. Every family has different requirements. Our maid does not tend to our garden because this is our own house and we did a lot of landscaping so it needs a bit more professional touch in this climate. But she does keep the garden clean, she washes the paving, tidies up, washes the cushions etc seating things like that as and when it needs to be doing. As long as your maid has decent working hours, is not overworked, has breaks and rest, weekly day off there is no general duty in an average family house I could not imagine not asking from a maid. Both me and my husband can and do lots of things around the house, we are house proud, so I have no issue asking for help where I need it. Paying extra for "extra duties" is not even a topic I would entertain from our maid. Paying extra for work well done, or extra hours is a different matter. That we do.

I meant to add also that instead of something to wrap in a gift box, how about an experience of some kind? I once sent my husband to Yas Circuit in Abu Dhabi. You could also make the card with a photo of him and your baby together. Congratulations on the baby for you both. It is magical time. I am sure no matter what you give him, just to celebrate Father's Day will be pretty amazing for him.

One important thing to add, my surgery was entirely covered by insurance, even the abdominoplasty. Otherwise was going to be dhs 50-60K.

Yes I did have a hernia and diastasis repair with abdominoplasty. This may come as a shock but my keyhole mesh surgery caused me personally more pain that the hernia and abdominoplasty. They kept me on spinal anaesthesia (I hope to explain correctly, I had a little needle in my back where they were able to administer painkiller) and this ensured I was able to get up and move easily the next day (so not the kind of anaesthesia that immobilises you). This was kept for three days which is the time of the most severe pain. So I literally had none. I was up and walking very quickly. It is not pain per se, for me at least, you will feel uncomfortable, there is tightness also. I walked upright in about a week, till then you take it easy. But for me the pain was far less than what I anticipated and what put me off for ten months of doing it. The pain management was a big topic with Dr Yasser and we went through the options together. I took no painkillers after one week. For me my emergency C-section was more painful in terms of recovery to put it in perspective. I am so happy with the results. I had the look of woman 4-5 months pregnant, with hard distended tummy, pain, belly button "detached". Now I have a beautiful tummy to me, and I am happy. I have keloid scarring around my belly button but I don't care. I inherited this from my dad, runs in the family so I have other scars that are vertical also with hypertrophic or keloid scars. But not the tummy tuck scar. It has almost faded away. Because if the scar is horizontal you have less chances of getting it. And it depends on your genetics.

I also want to add that for me personally I wanted to do this surgery at a big hospital, I felt more at safe hands there. I went to see unnamed Plastic Surgery clinic here too for the same and gosh the approach was totally different. I would not had done this surgery in one of the plastic surgery hospitals. I cannot comment whether they are good or not but I wanted to be in what I consider " a real well accredited hospital" it made a difference to my piece of mind. If you have hernias also, not all of them are easy to fix. I already had a surgery done previously so for me to even do a second one was a big decision. I knew at City hospital if anything goes seriously wrong, they have the people and facilities to take good care of you.

Dr Yasser Khattab without a doubt. I had double hernia and also bad diastasis recti, and had unsuccessful mesh via keyhole surgery done a year previously by general surgeon. Dr Yasser fixed everything, he has incredible manners, very caring, and extremely skilled surgeon and does complex surgeries, not just plastic surgery. He receives patients at City Hospital. I was not in pain at all because their extremely skilled pain management the first three days. After care was also amazing. Also I was so impressed at City Hospital that they kept the same daytime nurse for you for continuity, it made a big difference to my recovery also. If you choose Dr Yasser you will be in very safe hands. I am sure the other doctors mentioned here are also excellent so it is good you can perhaps go and visit for consultation and then go with whom you feel most comfortable with. Don't rush into a decision, and don't let doctor rush you either. I waxed and waned for 10 months until I had this surgery and never felt any pressure at all. Especially if you have small children, timing is important and the help at home because you are not allowed to lift for many weeks. I wish you best of luck!

People have no life or sense of humour to get upset over something like this. I mean setting up a Facebook page to attract even more lunatics who are just waiting for the next news piece to rant about. People rejoicing over someone's bad fortune, even if he himself made a fool of himself. Politicians commenting? Why? Because someone likes to brag about their car and wealth? Well whatever makes you feel like you are a good person.

You don't necessarily need a tummy tuck even if you want the diastasis fixed. It can be fixed laporascopically too, but of course it is not a tummy tuck where they cut extra skin or do a lipo as well. But it fixes the muscles and also the hernia. I played with the idea of both, yes I could lose some skin from pregnancy and also some fat, but I found the general surgeon talking very sensibly to me of different ways I can fix his problem. My doctor is dr fariq baduddin at Dubai Mall Medical Centre and he will do the surgery in American hospital.

I have this problem. I developed quite bad diastasis after my second baby over a year ago and it has now developed into an abdominal hernia. My stomach from above belly button is very distended, and hard and my tummy gets so incredibly swollen I can look 5 months pregnant. I tried postnatal pilates and tuppler technique but there has been no effect. Finally I have gone to see both a general surgeon and a plastic surgeon. Both diagnosed also the abdominal hernia which needs to be fixed. Both doctors were very nice but I am not interested in the open surgery tummy tuck. I just want the diastasis and hernia fixed and I will have this done in June through laporascopic surgery where the doctor will put a mesh in. Recovery time much quicker, no big scar. I will still have whatever extra I have in my tummy, but I can live with that, but not the pain from hernia or the hard distended belly that has just gotten worse and worse. My surgery will Benin American hospital

Hi! We just bought in Meadows 6 and love the location as it suits us for lots of reasons from schooling to start with. It has two big parks, both with pools and playgrounds and also quick access to a Springs park. We only ever wanted to buy in Meadows for it being the optimum for us in terms of location and houses that fit our budget. There are not that many Meadows villas on the market so it is not like we could go to each Meadows and look for lots of houses. Most I saw for sale were in Meadows 1 and 2 and then 7, 8 and 9. There is a really big lake that is shared by some of the Meadows such as 6-8 and that appealed to us as we like going for jogs and so forth nice for children - we too have two little ones. We looked at Meadows 9 but it did not appeal to us due to its location and lack of facilities like swimming pool. There are more houses available there but it was not for us. You can get a bigger house there for the price of a smaller one in other Meadows though. I am not sure which type you are looking for - some 4 bedrooms seem to be on the market, and then some bigger ones. Adviceseeker's suggestion of the Lakes is also valid. We looked around there also and it is lovely there, very green but what made us choose Meadows is that it is very close to the school my DD goes to so she can walk there when she is older and also the parks are much bigger than in the lakes, more space to run around and also the big lake as we feel it will add to our lifestyle. Our friends bought in Meadows 5 a couple of months back and love it there. Although we did not buy through Espace agents as the house we bought was via another agent, I have to say there is an agent called Alastair who just could not do too much for you - the greatest guy and very professional - one of the really decent ones. They should have some Meadows villas on their books. Good luck no matter what!

Just wanted to add that everyone looks for a better pay when they move jobs so if he did not inflate his salary too much, it should not be a problem. He could depending on the nature of his job mention bonus or some other benefits that is not shown in the salary slip or statement.

Very normal practice especially in executive positions. My husband has worked for a few multinationals here and has always been asked his latest salary slip. Also the group I worked for does the same and it does tend to be a bit embarrassing if an otherwise good candidate has lied a lot about their previous salary. I do not think saying no it is confidential information is going to work in his favor if he wants the job. This is HR policy in many companies. I hope he gets the job!

I have been here for so many years and it has almost become a common place that I seem to attract these comments - always about weight! I am also 1m75cm and 63kg so normal but I seem to get these, have you put on weight, that dress will not suit you because you are a little bit fat? And the best one was when i was indeed pregnant, I got a question from a girl working in a salon - are you pregnant or is that stomach fat? And where I worked it was always certain nationalities commenting on anything and everything to do with looks and it would drive many of us nuts. I cannot believe in any culture insults are ok so I to this day tend to get ****** off. The other day my friend was in a mall eating and guy on the table next to her said to her - "that is too much food". To me these people are just ignorants, lacking basic politeness.

Our maid did that for 2 consequent years. We gave her 2 salaries and the cost of the ticket. Make sure here leave is not due in high season :) This is what we did as well. many maids prefer to stay here because they end up spending a lot of money when the are back in Philippines. We paid our maid 13th month salary and the equivalent of a ticket to Manila which we calculated based o what Emirates would have cost us - that time it was about Dhs 3,300 for return ticket.

Some people just make awful bosses, their egos get too big for their own good. Over ten years ago I worked for a lunatic who was just the worst boss ever. He "lived" in the office despite having a wife and a young child. So his thinking was if he is there all the time, so should the rest of us. I had to walk past his office when I left in the evening, and regularly I would stay two extra hours so that it would look good. As did everyone else. No one left on time. He used to stare at people from his office and say things like "escaping?", "running away"? And even though we had a two day weekend, everyone showed up on one of those days because that was the expectation. Even if to just play solidaire on the computer. Presenteism was big thing for him. He was just a highly unpleasant person.

Are they allowed to do that????? Unbelievable - and I bet it doesn't go to the person who breaks their back every day lugging heavy gear into our cars...... Totally think this way too. I bet the service fee goes nowhere near the person providing the service. I far rather would give money to the person himself - not the business. By the way, anyone knows what happens when yo tip petrol station guys? I remember few years back the petrol companies banned tipping. However I continue to tip them everytime when they put petrol inmy car. The tip should always go directly to the person doing the job.

I love this weather and hope it lasts a long time, the hot sticky weather will be around the corner soon enough . I find it a bit funny when people go around saying it is too cold for their kids to play outside! Some people go around in winter jackets and scarves when it is still over 20 celcius. But each to their own. I love it right now, and every cool morning for me is like a blessing. Meaning we can be outside and enjoy fresh weather. I am one of those who cannot stand it here in the summer when you have to live with AC constantly on, and being indoors big parts of the day. :)

Sounds like a total incompetent! Yes to work as a maid you do need some skills and perhaps some common sense. Problem is these companies bring these girls over and some get no proper training even. They are send off to whatever. Not fair on clients and not fair exactly on the girls who work as maids either. My friend had a maid from an agency that would put dirty dishes from the dishwasher in the cupboards.

That sounds like a nice idea too! And to mention, at Cello, your child will be alone inside the ballet room, and it has not suited every child. Mine has had her clingy moments too! Don't worry about your DD being shy - mine goes through phases of being confident and shy - sometimes shy in certain situations and then more confident in others. Main thing is that your DD likes the activity, and makes some friends to socialise with! Good luck!
