Hi ladies. A friendly group that meets at Jones the Grocers (Salam Mall (opposite Marriott/Renaisance City Centre)) on a Sunday morning from 10am to 12pm. It is a pinned post at the top of this page. There are a variety of ages of ladies, so not all "young" Mums, but many of them are still young at heart, and welcoming to newbies. A good way to get to know things about Doha if you're new edited by VRDoha on 24/02/2014

Villa No. 10, Salehbin Bayan Street PO Box 202467 Abu Hamour Doha Qatar 44 67 8998 If you are a member of any of the Womens Associations here, ask if they do a discount. Hi ladies, Sheba124, unless Royal Mail have changed their policy, I have been redirecting my post to my family since July 2010 when I left, so that is into my third year now. My understanding is that it is three years that they will do it for. Post is particularly difficult here, and as others have said hit and miss (whether sending it From here, or getting it to here...) Two options; Family to scan and send, and then pick up anything when back on leave, or if you know someone who is going UK side on a regular basis (colleague/friend) get stuff sent to theirs, and then they will hopefully be happy to bring it out to you unopened!!

If you check out Zumba - Qatar and Zumba Doha (not Zumba in Doha) on FB, you will find more info too. I have been to a couple of classes here in Doha (with different instructors), and I personally just love Jamil Sidani - who does the class at the Ritz-Carlton (Fridays at 11:30) and B Attitude Spa in Beverley Hills Towers in West Bay (some morning and evenings during the week). He has a Great Attitude, and is not up himself, and is a genuinely nice guy (no, I don't fancy him!). His attitude is that it isn't exercise, it's a party! He is currently out of the country though (after all that build up!), but will be returning to Zumba on the 1st March at 11:30am for a Master Class at Ritz-Carlton - it's for 2 hours - but Great fun!

Wow! It is Fabulous to see such a positive thread on Doha! I love it here, and can't find much to fault. There is QPWN (Qatar Professional Women's Network), and you can find their link on Facebook. A friend and her husband are also part of a group called Internations http://www.internations.org - they are International, but have a group base in Doha Also, there is the QNHG - Qatar Natural History Group, which have talks in the evening, and do trips around Qatar (not as nerdy as it sounds), and we also went on a Great sailing trip with them last year out to Banana Island (Qatar waters) - And met some lovely people. Then there are smaller opportunities to get to know people such as volunteering at QAWS - Qatar Animal Welfare Society, whereby you can go and walk/play/cuddle the dogs, and play/cuddle with the cats (for you this would be mainly at weekend, as they have set times at the end of the day during the week). Also CIQ (Cats in Qatar) & a dog one too. There appears to be more and more threads of newbies looking for friendship on EW too, soI am Sure you will have No problem. The great thing about Doha is that there is a Huge Expat community, and therefore if you don't like something/someone you Don't Have to entertain it/them! Not meant to sound quite as fickle as it does! Ha Ha Good luck

Hi Pixie 9, welcome to Doha, and any other newbies reading this thread. I have been in Doha for 18 months and loving it. I only moved in to West Bay in July, which is great, but even before that life was good. There are lots of lovely people to meet, both working and not. Although Doha is pretty small, there is a Huge expat community out here. Even after 18 months, I still find expatwoman.com to be an excellent source of information, and I enjoy reading most threads that catch my eye. A couple of threads that might help you settle in, and get to know your way round; http://www.expatwoman.com/qatar/forum/messages.aspx?TopicID=181686 - RE: City Centre Wives Group http://www.expatwoman.com/qatar/forum/messages.aspx?TopicID=196992 - RE: American Womens Association - You don't Have to be from the Americas I'm sure there are a tonne of others too. I hope you settle in well. Let me know your e-mail, and I'll message you (I don't want to put mine on here as it is my full name) edited by VRDoha on 08/01/2013

Sorry Tamieg, I might not be from Australian, but married to one, and have spent my time in Aus, and in UK where Uggs are all the rage and NOT just as slippers.... I had to look it up, just to make sure I wasn't going mad though. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ugg_boots In the UK they are worn all year round, and, as you're probably aware, it gets p-retty wet in UK - whether winter or not. :) DH grew up in Aus and he doesn't understand what the rage is about, as he used to wear them as school shoes as a kid, and he Certainly wasn't wearing them as a fashionista!

Hi ladies, There is a lot going on in Doha if you look for it, and we have been here just under 18 months, and I love it. I don't even work, so could not use that as a social contact - DH does the working, I'm the social secretary of the clan! Just a bit of advice that I was given for EW forum (or Any forum for that matter) - once the person you are aiming it at has got your e-mail address, then remove it from the forum just in case somebody unwanted mis-uses it badly, and you start getting spam, or worse you are hacked (not trying to be melodramatic, but safer to be safe than sorry!)

Yes, my recommendation would be to use European sizing rather than what you expect for U.S or UK sizing (Completely different!) - Or at least make sure the website advises whether it is a UK or US sizing I ordered some MBT's a few years ago through the web in the UK in what I thought was a UK 5, and it turned out to be a US 5 (which in fact is approx a UK 3!!!!!) - As you can imagine, it was a nightmare, and I couldn't Possibly wear them as they were far too small, but I was lucky and had a UK friend with size 3 feet (UK), and she bought them off me! Sorry, I Don't know of anywhere in Doha that sells Uggs.

Hi there, Although I haven't got an RP (and won't be getting one - one reason - DH is a contractor), DH and I got married in Cyprus last year, and we had to get it apostilled (?!?!) from the Foreign Affairs department in Cy, Not at a Qatari Embassy. I BELIEVE it is the same in Dubai also (as a friends son got married in Cy and all the Emiraties needed was it to be formalised (but I'm guessing that is because it wasn't done in UK). Others may have a different opinion, but I Don't think you have to jump through such hoops. I think you just need to provide the ORIGINAL marriage certificate with the signatures, but Please do not rely on me! Hope it's easy. :)

Sorry, I kinda went over the "one" good thing Hate.... Not exactly hate - More of A challenge: Excess heat in summer months, so, it's difficult to spend a lot of time outside

It's sooo good to see that this forum works so well! And, I guess that this is what it is all about! I don't even know Tim Horton's, and yet, I was looking at an article about Ezdan Mall opening, saw the picture, and thought I Must post the link on EW, so that fellow ladies can put a smile on their faces... So, I EVEN actually signed in, so that I could post, and there it is, already done for me. Good news obviously travels fast. GREAT publicity for Tim Horton's though - we should contact their HQ and let them know how much their coffee is appreciated, then they may even open more around Doha... City Centre? And this is coming from a Non Canadian that has never heard of the brand before! :)

Hi there, I didn't have a great experience with real estate agents, however, if you are looking for an apartment in West Bay, then I suggest going to each block that you may be interested in - most of them have leasing offices. Bonus - You also then save yourself the fee that the real estate agents would charge! That's how we got our apartment. :o)

Hi there, just reading through some threads (as I do, as I feel this is such a Fab & informative site!)... Loloatdoha - in your message below you say you are meeting friends for coffee at Jones the Grocers at 11:45 next Monday - Sorry - as it is still Ramadan, you won't be able to get Any coffee in any general public coffee/restaurant place in Doha until evening (apart from some of the 5* hotels (Renaissance, Marriott, W, Ramada, etc)). From the 18th/19th Ramadan will end, and therefore you will have All the choice of coffee houses. Yay, we are now more than half way through Ramadan!

I am in Cyprus currently, and get back to Doha end of August, but I'm up for joining a diving club if another newbie would like to join me too. I know you can get BBQ's in Carrefour (City Centre and Landmark), and I'm sure you can in other main food stores (Giant, Lulu), and I think you can get them in Home Center. However, I don't know where you can get the gas from, but you may be able to ask at customer services wherever you buy it (the BBQ!). edited by VRDoha on 26/07/2012

Sorry, I don't mean to be rude, but as you don't know me, isn't it Rather presumptuous of you (Northernstar) to assume that this is my First expat posting!!!!!???? I was born outside of my home country, and grew up as an "expat brat" overseas, and have lived in several countries as an adult as well. Granted, I haven't lived in other GCC countries, but the world is a Big place, and there are a LOT worse places to live than Doha. I just find it really sad that there are sooo many negative comments about Doha on this forum (especially to newbies), when life here is What You Make It, and Can be Really fun! Admittedly, Ramadan is harder, with coffee shops and restaurants being closed (except in the larger 5* hotels), but it just means that we (the ones here for it) make more of an effort to get together with friends. Appreciating we are only 5 days in to Ramadan, but I have already had a day meeting with girlfriends for games and coffee at their homes, and had a pot luck lunch with another group of girls, today I had various shopping erands to do which covered my morning, and I'll go to the gym & swim in my building this afternoon. Tomorrow I know some friends are planning to meet for lunch at one of the hotels. I know that they still have the ladies day at the Intercontinental (Near Katara) on a Tuesday and Wednesday (50 riyal entry instead of 250). The AWA (American Women's Association) still have an informal coffee morning once a month, and the TLG (Tuesday Ladies Group) also still meet at the Ramada/ Radison Blue (I think every other Tuesday, and they met this week). I think it Might even be easier With children, as that is a way in to some groups too! It's all about planning, and getting out there. Best of luck Babysoosoo, although I don't think you will Really need luck - just an open mind, and a friendly nature (and don't believe All the critics on the forum!). ps. The last comment was not directed at you Northernstar.

I have done the BA flight (there is only a night flight) out of Doha through Bahrain, and the London to Doha through Bahrain in August, September & April. It's not like they have the plane waiting in the middle of the runway, with the doors open, and the heat pouring in. and I didn't notice any heat, as I believe the air con is still on. You're only on the ground for about an hour / an hour and a half tops. I think this is a small price to pay if you're looking to bring extra baggage instead of being charged a Lot PER KILO by other airlines. Sorry, as I don't have kids, therefore I don't know anything about buggies, nor do I know if they assist with baggage - you could always send an enquiry to BA off their website. Hope this helps

BRITISH AIRWAYS hands down the BEST for extra luggage! (And, I DON'T work for them!) http://www.britishairways.com http://www.britishairways.com/travel/bagchk/public/en_gb They have a kinda direct flight from Heathrow to Doha (it stops down in Bahrain, but you don't get off the plane) You are allowed the one suitcase free with a 23 kilo allowance (I know not as good as Emirates...However...) BUT.... Then.... 1st Extra SUITCASE worth of 23 kilos is ONLY charged at 34GBP (If booked on line as part of check-in) - 40GBP if paid at airport check-in Further extra bags (of 23 kilos each!!) are ONLY charged at 77GBP (if booked on line as part of check-in) - 90GBP if paid at airport check-in You can pay to check in up to 10 extra bags per person with the same weight restrictions as your free allowance! However, You cannot purchase extra bags for an infant, under 2 years of age. I do not know Any other airline that does Not charge a per kilo price for excess baggage! I feel that that is a compromise for having to drop down in Bahrain either way... However, this isn't just on this route. We learnt about it and used it when leaving Singapore to go back to Sydney too! Certainly faster than shipping.... Good luck edited by VRDoha on 24/07/2012

Although I have never lived in Dubai, I am happy to go there for a weekend, but I would much prefer to live in Doha. I've been here a year, and I have a great group of friends (not just one group, but a few different groups), and there is always something to do - even in Ramadan! From what I know of Dubai, it's quite glitzy and impersonal, where as I find Doha very friendly, and I still get most things here that I want, and the rest I just get when I go away - but never sit there worrying about what I Cannot get! You just adjust and learn how to live slightly differently. An address in the Lagoon is A Very Nice place to be, and I am sure that there will be lots of friendly people there too. It is a community, and is gated (and I'm sure people shall correct me if I'm wrong), but there are gated developments within the West Bay Lagoon developments. City Centre (where most of the large, impressive, well known hotels are) is close by, as well as City Centre Mall. Sorry, I don't know anything about the schooling. Doha is a Great place to live, and I have thoroughly enjoyed the last year here, and would quite happily spend the next 2-3 years here, if DH's job allows! Good luck with the move.

Hi ya.. I arrived around this time last year.. Can be quite daunting (and at least I had a couple of weeks Before Ramadan started!). The TLG (Tuesdays Ladies Group) still have an informal coffee morning running (even though they close for the summer), and the details are on their web page http://www.tlgdoha.com/ The AWA (American Women's Association) also do have informal coffees once a month over the summer - go to their website - http://www.awaqatar.com/. (You DON'T have to be an American to join, and they are a nice bunch of ladies (the friendliest group that I've met here). If you have kids, I understand there is also a group called Doha Mums (try googling that). As you already know, The Intercon' (near Katara - NOT City Centre) is somewhere to go on a Tuesday /Wednesday for Ladies Day, however, as it is pretty hot out there, you may find it difficult to meet lots of people (as they may stay away until it gets cooler). Sadly, as I'm sure you're aware, no where really, apart from some of the larger, well known hotels have any eateries or coffee shops open during the holy month. At least that gives you a start. There are still quite a few people round Doha for the summer, so don't despair. ;)

Honest answer - I think, if I REALLY wanted to get my butt out, and do some classes, I wouldn't be making these excuses!!! ;) I was just REALLY fortunate that in Singapore (prior to Doha), my Zumba instructors were SUPERB, and I ended up doing 3-4 classes a week, and it was a five min walk down the street. Just my limited experience of Zumba here wasn't great. Compounds - there are some Really great recommendations on this site. I am an apartment person, and will (hopefully!!) be moving into a gorgeous one tomorrow in West Bay. There seems to be a huge amount of activity on building of compounds at Al Waab "city" (Don't be put off this is just an area within Doha). These May be finished by the time you need to move. I'm not the best person for those sorts of recommendations though. Good luck!

Ooh Ooh - Dance Teacher - please do adult classes! If I was still in UK or Aus for a while, I would definitely be working on taking both my Zumba instructor, and doing a Ceroc Teaching certificate (and getting a licence). There are a few Zumba classes here at the hotels (Sheraton & Intercon), and a few other places (Beverley Hills Towers (apartments), some compounds, etc), but they are either in the evening (when I would rather be at home), or at compounds that are not convenient for me... I think, with the cost of a ceroc licence, I would have to do quite a bit of market research into whether expats were interested, as it is not a typical thing that the Middle Eastern culture would entertain (i.e., male and females dancing as partners in public) Sorry, that's not meant to sound like a criticism - just a fact of the local culture. If you check at the Sheraton, Intercontinental (not City Centre), Four Seasons, Ritz-Carlton, etc, you'll find a variety of classes being offered.

Just be warned ladies - Parking is an ABSOLUTE nightmare! Went there yesterday (Thursday 12th around 3:30), and I almost left after driving round and round for fifteen minutes; and once you see a space - guard it with your life/horn!! Having said that, coming out a couple of hours later (around 5:30), there was definitely more spaces in the car park. Can't wait until Doha gets back to some sort of shopping normality!

Hi ladies, Having been "that" person who has had to look for new accommodation recently, if you are looking for an apartment in West Bay, my best advice is to go straight to the front desk at each building and ask for the Leasing/Letting Office. This way you will not have to pay for Any of the Agency Fees - and may even get a better deal! Having also tried to look at a few compounds, this is more difficult without an agent on tow, as the compounds that I tried to get into don't have someone on site who knows about the leasing/letting. However, if you ask enough questions, the guards at the gate normally are able to give you the number of someone (however, not sure who the "someone" is). Or, as I found, more often than not, you see a compound that looks nice, and when you find the entrance of a compound you like, it is not open to General Public leasing/letting (ie, only for staff accommodation for Qatar Airways, or staff accommodation for Hamad Hospital, etc) Good luck.... Hopefully I am at the end of my search! Now to deal with the actual leasing terms! Ha Ha! ;) V

Thanks RachelA, Sadly Al Fardan doesn't have any three beds avail at all, and I've been to Beverley Hills Towers (and on a list if anyone leaves - have seen one or two), went to Al Areen, and was Not impressed with the standard and also all exc of bills, linen, crockery, cleaning, etc (not really a comp to BHT's). Haven't checked Al Aamal. Will also check Ezdan. We (DH & I) did go to BHT at prime time for kids in the pool, so it was completely wild with kids, and not much space in the pool for anyone else! Anyone know of any villas at all - that's the next option. (Honestly though RachelA - thanks!!!) ;)

Quite a few ladies in West Bay do not have kids/or kids are grown up, and not around. Always nice to be able to meet new people. I think this would be popular, I'll let my West Bay friends know.

We went last weekend with a Fabulous group of people (mostly unknown to us), and had a BLAST. It was through QIA / QIT (Qatar International Adventures / Tours) http://www.qiaqatar.info We went serious dune bashing on our way down there (driven by their professional drivers), and then they had us stay in an overnight camp (they do do day tours). The drivers were professional, and the experience was Fabulous. Words of wisdom.... If you do stay overnight however, it is All very clean, but, I would suggest taking a yoga mat to go on top of the foam mattresses (covered in plastic) that they give, + your own sleeping bag, OR maybe a sheet to go with the synthetic sleeping bag that they give. All for the bonus price of QR350 HIGHLY recommend it. And we Shall do it again. ps. I Don't work for them, so this isn't a HARD sell on their behalf!!!! ;)

I agree with Silver 6 and Safiya Dafiya, it is a Real shame that you have had a bad experience!! It is my Favourite restaurant in the souq. I have been there both during the day (when generally quieter), and also in the evening, and it has been busy, but I have never been disappointed with either the service or food (you have to try the vinlives (Yes vinlives - but meaning vine leaves) - the one for QR80 - a GREAT dish with dolmades and lamb). I hope you give it another try, and get a better experience....

Oh - Further e-mail from David saying starting this weekend... Whether that means he's already there, and moving to outside Virgin, or the whole thing starting from the weekend.... When in Doha....

Just wondered what the average price would be for a pre-owned small/average size 4 x 4 here nowadays (selling between expat community - as you would hope you wouldn't be swindled!!!!) :\:

Thai Smile in Al Rumeilah Park (I call it Al Bidda Park - The big park between the Corniche and Al Bidda Street) - At the National Theatre end. - GREAT! Went there with a group of girlfriends last Thursday, and there is Lots of choice - and our bill came to QR29 each (that was with a fair amount of food, water and some cokes too!!!) Very Cheap. Unless you know where it is, or somebody told you - you would never believe it was there. The row of shops along the canal in the middle of the park! Worth hunting for. :)

I've got some in my freezer, and I mainly shop at Carrefour. Having said that, as we all know, just because I have seen it doesn't mean that it will be there every week!
