Hi ladies, I was wondering if any of you are rabbit owners and if you could possibly recommend a good rabbit-savvy vet in Dubai. I want to do an overall check-up for my bun, consult about neutering, etc., and I know that it's very important to see someone who is experience with rabbits in particular - and not just cats and dogs. Any recommendations would be useful. Thanks in advance! edited by Cheezu on 26/03/2013

Thanks for the reply, Hairy Maclary! I realize that they might be a bit stinky. I've had hamsters when I was little. From what I remember we'd clean out their cage about twice a week and it could get a little stinky but not unbearable. The reason I don't really fancy a hamster is that... well, they're really quite dumb to be honest, and you don't really get to form any sort of bond with them. You're right... I haven't heard of anyone keeping rats here but I thought EW might be a good place to ask anyway.

I'm an ovo-vegetarian. I eat eggs very rarely and only from free-range sources. For me, I went vegetarian for ethical reasons but it also brought in a lot of health improvements. I must admit that it's hard being vegan in Dubai especially if one is dining out. There is a good number of vegetarian options but getting something that's not drenched in cheese is another story altogether. Sure, I can eat green salad with no dressing wherever I go, but that likely won't fill me up. By the way, my cousin has created a Facebook page for all vegans and vegetarians in the UAE so if any of you ladies happen to be on Facebook, please join it. http://www.facebook.com/UaeVeggies It's supposed to be a support network where members can share recipes, tips and communicate with each other. Also, there are some inspirational photos posted on a daily basis, etc. Thanks! edited by Cheezu on 16/11/2012

I always make them with plant-based milk as I find that easier on the stomach. You can buy frozen or fresh fruits and veggies pretty much anywhere. For the milks, I go to the Organic Store at the Dubai Mall as I find they have a bigger variety.

Hi I have put this on classifieds but not sure if anyone has read it, I have 5 baby piggies looking for new homes, one is 7 week old female, and a 6 week old male, and 3 6 week old females. Good pets for children as they are not biters or escape artists. Easy to care for and love to be handled. Like to live in at least twos, best not to put male/female together unless one is neutered, If interested you can reply to me via the classifieds advert Many thanks, I really do not want to have to put them in the pet shop, but I am congested with 21 piggies at home!! Hi! Are you giving them away for free? I might be interested but I need to consult it with DH first. Where do you live? Could I see their photos anywhere?

I am sorry to sound negative but I keep coming back to the fact that you need a garden to keep tortoises. Don't worry and you don't sound negative. As I said, we are considering it but, in the end, I will not opt for it knowing that it could harm the animal.

Hi Cheezu I have a couple of Russian tortoises and they are very active and strong for their size and I cannot imagine them in an inside habitat. Of course in cooler climates people often bring their tortoises in for the winter but as tortoises are prone to respiritory infections if kept in room with A/C, so you have to be careful of that over here. This is a good website about Russian tortoises and shows what you would need to house it when it does need to come inside (of course the seasons are reversed as it is written for a climate where the summers are less harsh and the winters cooler). Hope that helps. Thank you, Fiat500! We actually use the AC sparingly and we never use it during the winter months here (I'm prone to getting bad colds myself and the place I work is freezing as it is... hehe) Would you say that it would be OK to keep it on on the terrace in a built-in enclosure? Could it also be kept out during the summer? Thanks a lot for the info.

Oh, I see. We were planning to build an enclosure for it both indoors and on the terrace. I read that the smaller breeds can be kept indoors (for example, the Russian tortoise). But of course, I would not like to deprive it of what's best for it hence I'm looking for advice. I've known some people who kept tortoises in my home country but unfortunately, I'm not in touch with them anymore.

We have four young Sulcata tortoises that are looking for homes. These are a larger variety of tortoise and although they are small now they will need a good size garden to roam in. If you are interested just let me know how to contact you. We have lots of experience with tortoises having kept then for 25 years here, happy to have a chat if you want advice. edited by Fiat500 on 04/11/2012 Thank you, Fiat500! We're actually looking for something smaller, that we could keep in an apartment, and that doesn't grow beyond 12-16 inches. Any idea what breed to get?

It is impossible to lighten hair unless with dyes / bleach / peroxide. Lemon juice might lighten dark blonde or strawberry blonde hair but if it is mid to dark brown (which ahem, mine is naturally) you won't be able to lighten it in any kind of organic / henna / natural way. Hair dyes have come a long way and the good ones actually leave hair in really good condition! Unless you never use shampoo / conditioner / any kind of hair product - all of these contain chemicals anyway. I'd go to a reputable hairdresser and have them put some highlights in. They only dye about 25% of your hair but it instantly gives it a sunkissed look and they're easy to maintain (as in, unlike block colour, you can re-do them every 4 - 12 weeks) - since only a small bit of hair is dyed, it's easier to keep it in good condition. Thanks for the suggestion. I've been thinking of highlights myself it's just that my hair has never been color-treated so I'm a little worried that it will start this cycle of never-ending retouches and hairdresser visits (I'm sure you know what I mean). I'm pretty sure if have read somewhere on the net about herbal remedies to lighten hair. I know I won't be able to go platinum (hehe) but just to make my hair kinda light-brownish. I can't find these links anymore.

I was just wondering if anyone knows of a more natural way to lighten hair. My hair is medium to dark brown and I'd like to get it a few shades lighter without having to use a dye that's packed with all sorts of chemicals. Any herbal remedies, natural hair masks you could use, etc.?

It's not mentioned in the contract so I think although it may be the landlord's right to ban or not ban pets for whatever reason, he should have still mentioned it, right? I just remembered that people do own dogs in university campuses in Sharjah. My main concern is, if he calls the police, what will happen? Will she have any chance?

I remember a law in about 2001 for Sharjah regarding barking dogs....I have a feeling that there is something in it. I think it might be a hard one to fight. Here is the Ajman rule: http://www.emirates247.com/news/emirates/new-law-only-2-pets-per-house-in-ajman-2012-09-10-1.474824 Thanks! I have read about the Ajman rule (no dogs unless it's in a villa). The thing is, my friend's doggy is not a barker. She has a feeling someone (either the watchman or one of the tenants) might have just snitched while seeing her take it out for walks. I had a feeling the law might be a little iffy on this one. She will most likely have to move.

I've used this in the past, I don't recommend it. Stick with the organic/natural shampoos. It will be better for you in the long run. Really? I was just surprised by all the positive feedback for something that was initially thought to be horse shampoo. Just wondering why you don't like it - did it cause any damage? If you look at the ingredients, you will see that it is not much different than many of the "mainstream" shampoos, i.e. Pantene, Suave, etc. I do believe it was a combination of many factors, water, shampoo, weather, that affected my hair texture after moving to UAE. After switching to all organic products, moroccan oil, no extras, I have noticed a huge difference. Oh, I see. I use baby organic shampoo from the Organic Store and switch it between Neutrogena T-Gel for my dandruff. I was just curious since I've read so many positive reviews but thanks for the warning all the same. Whenever I have asked Indian or Filipina or North African women (sorry to generalize!) about what products they use to keep their hair so thick and healthy, not one of them has ever said they use this store-bought products, it's always something natural and "homemade" that they have grown up with so although I'm too lazy to i.e. wash my hair with tea, I figure I should go as natural as possible which means not using these types of shampoos. True but I think genetics do play a role. Most Filipina or Indian women have naturally thick healthy hair without trying too hard. =P (sorry to generalize... I know that's not the case for everyone)

er it's not a pet shampoo! Spinneys stock it, it's in the usual shampoo and conditioner sections. Oh, really? It is originally for horses though, isn't it? Though I know that it can be used by humans. They call it a cross over product. It was originally designed for horses, but now there's a human version with the same name. Never tried it myself, but always see it in the supermarkets. So the horse one and the human one are different? It's actually pretty interesting, there are several products that can be used on both animals and people, then they have animal specific and people specific products. Here you go. http://manentail.com/faqs/ Yes, I've heard that they have directions for human use as well as horse use on their bottle that's why I was looking in the pet sections. After visiting the site and reading the testimonials it seems that they most market for human use now.

I do not believe that the OP is who she says she/he is. I would imagine that this is someone looking for information on racism and locals and foreigners married to locals. I would suggest that we proceed with the utmost caution, until more is revealed. Why should you all get sucked in so quickly? Are you so gullible that you believe everyone on this forum are yummy Mummies in Jumeirah waiting to welcome you? The OP is prefectly capable of doing her own research on Dubai and Emiratis, without asking ladies to disclose their private lives. Besides this, no two Emiratis are the same. Is he a no.1 or no.2? Is he in fact local? It appears that he is none of the above. I suppose this could be correct because the story didn't hold to me and the OP seemed a little too concerned about what someone "of color" might face in the UAE.

There were some parts of your post that I considered quite alarming (and I don't mean any disrespect). You say that the man is the "love of your life" yet you're "years off" from meeting each others' families. It seems that he hasn't proposed to you, or at least you haven't discussed the matter of the move or his family's possible attitude toward your relationship which I find rather odd. You're also considering changing your religion for him (you say you're doing it for yourself but once again I think his role is quite significant). You also seem to be ready to just drop the entire relationship if things prove to be too hard. Lots of contradictions in other words, which makes it rather difficult to offer any guidance or advice. You should really be asking him most of this anyway. (also it does seem unusual that a local would spend years away from the UAE as some people have pointed out... though I could be wrong about that). I agree with Cheezu and reiterate what I and she have said which is please speak to him about his intentions regarding you - and especially his intentions as how you would be expected to live your life here should you become his wife. These were major concerns for me and I would have gotten nowhere had my DH and I not had a good discussion about every aspect. It could be that her SO has been out of the country for so long pursuing a higher degree, a lot in this generation (mid 30 early 40) have done this. Although we would need to hear back from OP about all of this and I think she may have gone missing :-) True but she said he's been living in the UK ever since he turned 8 along with his whole family. That part I found a little odd.

OK...have sat on the sidelines for long enough about this topic....I am sick to death of people claiming that a CERTAIN breed of dog is "this" or "that" when TIME AND TIME AGAIN there have been numerous cases of MUTTS saving peoples lives. Now I'm not saying that certain dogs aren't cut out for certain "jobs" but if all you're looking for is a pet (unless there are allergy issues) then WHY NOT A MUTT??? MAJORITY of what the dogs personality is will result in TRAINING or lack thereof! I have seen first hand PITBULLS who have had children hanging all over them....where as I have also seen small breeds bite like mad!! BROADEN your minds!! GRRRR RANT done! While this can be definitely true I do understand why some people might want to get a pure breed. There are still some people out there who decide to adopt and then a few months later the dog ends up on the street because it didn't turn out right or grew too much. For whatever reason, this happens too and we cannot just brush it off. Also, most adoptions are not chance adoptions - people still often go for a cat or dog of their liking and not just any random cat or dog at the shelter. While I agree with you on the training part, there are still some characteristics that may be predetermined by genes. So while I absolutely support adopting pets, I don't think it's my call to pass any judgment onto someone who decides to buy one. My main concern is puppy mills. If possible, I'd like to purchase from an ethical breeder who actually devotes his/her life to his dogs/cats. edited by Cheezu on 03/10/2012

I know I'll get shouted down by lots of very well meaning animal lovers (again) but here goes... If you can find the right breed for you at one of the adoption centres here in Dubai and want to adopt that animal then that is wonderful and the best outcome for all involved. If that doesn't suit you, however, there are alternatives and whatever many other posters will say, I do not believe that all the puppies at all the pet shops are from puppy farms but I could be sadly mistaken. I guess it depends on how much you are prepared to trust people. EuroPuppy, for instance, swear they do not use puppy farms and that all their puppies are kennel club registered. If you're interested, I suggest you contact them directly. I got my dog from a pet shop in Al Barsha called Pets Habitat and again, they say they don't use puppy farms. They write quite passionately about it on their website. I could not be more delighted with our dog who is quite the sweetest and most perfect little boy. I couldn't adopt since there were no hypo-allergenic dogs available for adoption when I was looking. I would love to adopt a dog if I could. I'd run a refuge if I could! I wrote about buying my puppy from Pets Habitat (and my desire to breed dogs) on EW as one of my first postings and was shocked by the outrage and hatred I provoked. Good luck with whatever you decide to do and I hope you find the perfect dog for you, whether that's through adoption, EuroPuppy, a pet shop or anywhere else. Okay, who will be the first to write about how I am a horrible, immoral animal hater? I don't think you're horrible or immoral. Most people do want to have some control over what their pet may turn out to be in the future and getting a specific breed gives more reassurance - for one, you're more likely to be able to determine the size and looks; you will also be able to get a better idea of the dog's temperament or personality. Of course, there are always exceptions but at least the chances of making an error get reduced considerably. I have actually heard of people who adopted tiny pups and then the pups grew to be extremely large dogs and so hard to keep in small apartments and sadly, had to be given away for adoption. Having said that, I think in an ideal world more people would for adoption. Then again, in an ideal world, there wouldn't be so many homeless unwanted dogs. edited by Cheezu on 02/10/2012

Insurance pays for a reduction if you can prove there are back/pain problems. Or so I have heard/read. Yes, I've heard of this too. Could depend on the kind of insurance you have though. Perhaps you should call and ask them. Also, finding a specialist for this kind of procedure is a must (I know you're not doing it for cosmetic reasons but breast reduction is actually said to be much more complicated than augmentation).

I've been told (although I haven't tried it) that most of the hotels offer these beach clubs and will allow you to try them out for free for a day. You could probably spend a few months trying all of them in your area. I've never heard of them letting you try the health club facilities free of charge (at least that's never occurred when I'd use them in the past). Unless it's a new thing?

Daza, she might be anorexic but not necessarily so. I'm her height and I weigh 90 lbs. I've been called anorexic in the past and it's always hurt me because it's very far from true. I'm a very petite person and I don't gain weight easily. I also exercise regularly and keep a low-fat diet. You're right, she might not be anorexic but when it's in conjunction with her striving for a certain 'look' then I'd say it's a strong possibility. Yes... A definite possibility in her case.

84 lbs. is rather light at 5'2" but again--that is her choice to be slim just as much as it is someone's choice to be obese--I pass no judgment on what people want to do to their own health. I'm not passing judgement on her but I do think it's sad when people wreck their health due to issues whether that be anorexia or obesity. Anorexia isn't a choice so much as a mental illness. It's a girl experimenting with makeup. Why is it such a big deal, really? The harajuku scene is so big in Japan and people around the world find it fascinating. When I was younger I went through my own little fascination with Anime and the Japanese culture. I suppose it's unfortunate that she's considering surgery but guess what, some people do get plastic surgery. The majority of Hollywood actresses had something or the other done to their faces or bodies. In the end it's up to the person what they want to do with their body. The girl is 19 - not 12. [b'>So are you saying that the solution is to forbid our little girls from watching Anime shows because that will make them want to look like the characters on the show[/b'>? edited by Cheezu on 01/10/2012 Not at all. That would be like saying little girls shouldn't be allowed Barbie Dolls in case they are one of the tiny percentage that take it to extremes by having surgery etc to actually look like Barbie. Some girls/women will always take things to extremes, if it hadn't been Anime with this girl, it would have been something else. Like I said, I like her make up but her height and weight give her a BMI of 15.4 which suggests anorexia. I find that sad. Oh, sorry. I was actually referring to UpsyDaisy who said, "If EVER you needed convincing that some of these kids programmes are just wrong". As you rightly said, it's like forbidding girls from playing with Barbies (some parents do, by the way). And what about following their favorite celebrities? Don't some teenage girls want to look like Miley Cyrus or Taylor Swift? In the end, our children can't live in a bubble. We can only hope that they will make the right choices in life and we can be there to guide them. As you said, the percentage of girls actually willing to go into such extremes and opting for invasive surgery is relatively small. But some people just feel uncomfortable in their own bodies which is more likely a sign of some psychological problems rather than a fascination with specific cartoon characters or celebrities. edited by Cheezu on 01/10/2012

So are you saying that the solution is to forbid our little girls from watching Anime shows because that will make them want to look like the characters on the show? edited by Cheezu on 01/10/2012

Hi Beebers. Thanks for the advice. I do agree the 8 kgs in 2 months is good but the thing is i lost 4 kgs in the first week and then the remaining over a span of 7 weeks, so that feels bad. I have to agree that im hardly exercising which i plan to start this week being a 30 min walk atleast 5 times. I do not want to be more vigorous, i shall do that when i have my last 5 kgs to lose. My problem is, i follow a diet the whole week, then im asked to have a cheat meal, the next day .. 1 kg and a half more. My husband comforts me saying its water retention, constipation etc but what irritates me is that it takes another 3 days to remove that. My point is if its water retention etc, it should go off in one day. It takes me 3 days to remove my previous weeks weight (which i gain in one cheat meal) and then the other 4 days to lose another kg. so this is what frustrates. Mayb my food does not get digested that fast...dont know the answer but ya im still hanging on coz i want to get 10 off my body by dec. Miks80, you do realize that it's actually impossible to lose 4 kgs in a week, right? As I said previously, what you're losing is water weight and not actual weight in fat. This is why I do not condone diets. They'll just make your weight fluctuate a lot and mess up your metabolism. You should change your eating habits altogether and then slowly (but surely) you will lose all the fat weight and it will be very unlikely for it to come back.

If you really want to lose fat, try not to eat as much fat for at least the remaining days leading up to your wedding. Avocado (although yummy) and dairy products are packed with fat to be honest. Concentrate more on fruits and veggies. As for protein, try soya milk or tofu (also made with soy). Some people hate it but there are so many different flavors out there so if you hate the natural one go for vanilla, chocolate or strawberry. I have a 3-banana smoothie with soya or rice milk every morning for breakfast. Good luck!

Thanks for the replies, ladies. I guess we'll just have to call etisalat as this is obviously not supposed to be happening. The formatting thing is annoying as we usually download from torrents and have converted all our physical dvd's to avis way back. Guess we'll just have to convert the ones we want and from now on I'll be on the lookout for mp4s.

I think it depends. I have only known one family here who have been really extra friendly with their maid - to the extent that she'd sit and have dinner with them at the dinner table. Some prefer to keep their distance and like their privacy. In the end it all comes down to what works for you. But I think one ought to be at least friendly in the sense that you should say hello, ask her how she is and try to be polite. I have witnessed maids being shouted at a number of times and I don't think that's right at all.
