Hi I've been researching party options for my sons 6th birthday party In september vand it seems like I'm expected to pay in the region of aed145-199 plus, sometimes adults entrance on top which I just think is too much to pay for 15-20 kids. I'm thinking about finding a room to hire and getting party organises in and ordering food or sorting it myself and wondering if you can recommend either a decent party venue or organising at a more realistic cost please? I'm in the Arabian ranches areas and would really appreciate and ideas as I'm pretty new to dubai. TIA

found more - seems everything is detailed in Article 25 of Law 26 of 2007 which was then amended in 2008 http://www.dubailand.gov.ae/english/Tashjee/RulesandRegulations/Law%2033.pdf http://www.dubailand.gov.ae/english/Tashjee/RulesandRegulations/Law%2026.pdf

Hi Ladies Our LL has tried every dirty trick in the book and I want to check his latest request with you . Our 12 month contract expires 25Jul13 and he's given us 365 days notice which will take affect from the end of our contract taking us up to 25Jul14. He's asking us NOW to give him a 'vacating letter' as 'we will not be renewing after this year' ('this year' is ambiguous alone which is a separate issue). I've looked at my contract and it says 'the tenant shall submit 90 days written notice to the LL if the tenant wishes to vacate at the end of the contract'. My point is that WE don't wish to vacate but HE is making us so is it still correct that we have to give him this vacating letter now? Hope this is clear enough to understand and your thoughts are invaluable to me as ever! Thanks

God what a corrupt business this is! I wonder if there are any decent landlords out there!? Our LL put our villa up for sale 3 months after we moved in so it's already been on the market for 7 months but I guess it's not so easy to sell a house as an investment when you have a tenant entitled to stay in the property for the next year or so!

Hi everyone. Last week I posted looking desperately for a psychiatrist/psychologist. Thankfully, I followed some advise from a poster and went to see Dr. Amer at Dubai Community Health Center. I just want to HIGHLY recommend him. I was very skeptical about going to a male psychiatrist but I am so glad I decided to see him. He spent a tremendous amount of time with me - over an hour - and arranged for me to see a psychologist at the same center for follow up. Well, yesterday I went to Dr. Layla at DCHC and she was equally wonderful. Please, please, please ladies, if anyone is having trouble adjusting, is suffering from depression or just need someone to talk to I urge you to get an appointment as soon as you can. Really good to hear - well done you and hope you're seeing some light x

Dh checked with the RC about 3 weeks ago, they confirmed 12 months from end of current contract. Thanks! Ok I'm going to take that and tell the LL and see what happens. Grrrr it's a shame we all have to go through this. I wouldn't dream of treating my tenants back home like this. Thorough inventories would help too as I know that will be the next battle - getting our deposit back and LL justifying keeping it!

It is my understanding (but I am no authority) that he must give you 365 days' notice from when your contract is due to be renewed in July 2013. I think he's making it up as he goes along. edited by simpleasabc on 06/05/2013 Thanks - that's my feeling too but I'd like to know legally and quote it!

Our villa is currently on the market to sell and though he hasn't given us a reason to leave I'm assuming this is it as we refused to pay increased rent for the 2nd year on legal grounds (that old chesnut!). In July 2013 our first year contract expires. He's telling us now that he's giving us 365 days notice from now (today) to leave. Thanks for the link. Its this word 'eviction' - is this classed as eviction when the LL doesn't want to renew for a second year? The link says 'Landlord may demand eviction of tenant upon expiry of tenancy contract limited to :the following cases - If the owner of the property wishes to sell the leased property It goes on to say - landlord must notify tenant with reasons for eviction at least twelve months prior to the determined date of eviction subject .that such notice be sent through the Notary Public or by registered mail. But what does the above mean? Does it mean he can give us a years notice now so we don't actually complete the 2nd year or does he have to wait until our 1st year is about to expire to tell us meaning that we get to spend another full year here?

What do you mean normal? Its a MUST, the landlords insurance would cover only his building, none of your things. If a break in, fire, flood etc, how would you replace everything you own? Thats what insurance is for. We are with AXA, and we have an added 'clumsiness clause' so if I drop the iMac on my toe etc there would be some cover there. We have also added our housemaid for an extra fee, so if she breaks her leg while cleaning her medical fees for that are also covered. edited by Purple on 02/05/2013 Thanks that's great

Hi Ladies I'm wanting to get a full inventory done on my villa so both us and the landlord are aware of the condition of it and no deposits are held back! It seems this isn't very common in Dubai. Does anybody know of an inventory company or ever had one conducted on their villa please? The agent only conduct a snagging list which is not thorough enough. Thanks

Hi Everyone, I'm sorry, I'm really new to the idea of hiring a maid and my husband and I feel rather lost. Are there any questions that we should be asking at the interview, to try and avoid some of the horror stories you read about? Any advice would be really helpful, we're a bit nervous about the whole thing! Thanks Hi - I'm in a similar position and a friend of mine has sent me some interview questions. Email me and I'll send you the docs sarah_jane_honan at hotmail dot com

Has anyone eaten at the Rivington Grill in the Madinat? Looking to go somewhere fairly smart but not OTT for a nice meal this evening, many thanks Hi - I'm looking for the same thing! I'm out with my sister tonight and just wondering where to go, about to post a thread and see if anyone has any suggestions. I've been to the Rivington Grill last September and I thought it was quite nice, bit pricey, nothing OTT special but just pretty decent. Also of course great location to move about to have drinks elsewhere. Have fun!

We've never found the shampoos or pharmacy treatments very effective considering the nasty stuff that's in them. In the past we persisted with using a nit comb through hair loaded with conditioner for a few nights on the trot. Washing bedding, putting stuffed toys in the freezer (in an air tight bag of course) plus other preventative actions found on the internet, along with combing has done the trick for us. Good luck! Thanks - got a treatment from the pharmacy that involves leaving on the hair for 8 hours so we will see. Still combing like mad too and have bought some tea tree oil for future. Like the tip about putting soft toys in the freezer though - sure my son will find that highly amusing as well as effective!

Hello ladies I'm really interested in the local birds but struggling to find a book about them. Without having to spend GBP28.00 from Amazon I thought I'd ask the forums to see if anybody can recommend one please? TIA This is the one you want (definitely available in McGrudy's) Birds of the Middle East Second Edition ISBN 9780713676020. It's the premier bird book for this area. http://www.birdwatch.co.uk/channel/reviewitem.asp?c=11&review=2868 In the meantime you might find the following useful: http://uaebirding.smugmug.com/ http://www.uaebirding.com/uaechecklist.html Thanks thats brill and that's the book I actually found on Amazon but if I can get it here I won't have to pay GBP9 delivery and wait for 8-10 days! McGrudys - where is this? Is this it - http://www.magrudy.com/

I bought a great book with fabulous detailed sketches of the birds of the Middle East from Mac Grudys - I think I paid around 125aed. It was expensive but excellent - great bird watchers - soft cover, smallish size, colour sketches, detailed written descriptions and maps. Thanks for that. Does the book have photos of just sketches? Not meaning to be odd but I like to see the real life photo so I can identify!

Absolutely not!! I myself have used an agency in the past, and I have friends who do also (all different companies I may add) and I've never heard of anyone been asked to commit to a contract or pay a deposit. They're obviously at it, tell them to stick their service and go get another company hahahah yes agree totally. Already ringing around and have a couple of companies in mind. Thanks, it's as I thought, something not right!

Hi Would like your opinion on this please ladies. I've been using a new company to provide a maid twice a week / 4 hours at a time. I started about a month ago and now I've just had a call from the boss saying he wants me to sign a contract to commit me to their company for 6 months and if I want to cancel I need to give 1 months notice, plus he wants me to pay a AED1000 security deposit which I'll get back when I cancel the service. I've told him outright I'm not prepared to pay the security deposit which he seems to have accepted but I'm also not happy with the contract - I've never been asked to sign one with my previous maid company. That on top of bad time keeping and I'm not overly fussed on the maid I think I'll look elsewhere but I just wanted to know if the deposit/contract is usual please? TIA

Hi ladies I have my parents visiting for the first time next month and thought they might like to go on the Big Bus tour. I can see that TimeOut are offering 15% off if booked by end of this month but it's for fixed dates and not sure of our itinerary yet so don't want to commit to a particular date yet. Does anybody know if there are any other discounts around please? There's nothing in The Entertainer either. If any of you have ever used the Big Bus, would you recommend it? I've only been in Dubai for a short time myself so haven't heard opinions either way. Would there be another similar company more preferable? All comments are very much appreciated as usual. ;-)

I would have called the police. ETA: as you know there are other ladies walking in AR, not to mention teens and kids. Plus the girls at JESS running around the school perimeter in their mini do-dos.......he has plenty of prey left. edited by CallMeMaybe on 12/02/2013 Yeah I know that which is partly why I'm a little perplexed by it - there are so many people around and it's a busy roundabout and he was pretty old. Still, strong no doubt and things can/do happen. It could have been innocent but I didn't like it regardless. I'll let security know.

OK thanks for that I'll ask the guy at the gate. It's not a biggy but it made me feel uncomfortable and yes other women probably should be aware of this. I was running around Saheel and I could see and old'ish man up ahead in a white shell suit like track suit. When he saw me he walked round the corner, when I ran round the corner he was crouching, holding out his hand and said 'help me'. I naturally said 'morning' at the same time not quite realising what he was doing. I didn't stop but looked back and he was still crouching on the floor looking at me. I'm pretty sure there was nothing wrong with him. It made me feel uncomfortable and my gut tells me it wasn't right behaviour. I got home a couple of minutes later and straight into my car to find him to ask what he was doing and if he was alright but there was no sign of him anywhere and I searched. I wouldn't have got out of the car but probably called through my window (with locked doors).

He is just trying to put you in your place regarding whatever the fight was about. Seriously, men don't want sole custody of children, they'd destroy his career here (ask working mums about the child/work balance.) He wants to put fear in you My advice would be to do what needs to be done to calm the situation, Hoover time, get him back to calmish, and then decide what you want to do when you've got him back in the 'everything's normal' mind frame. Tell him you don't want to leave, and that you do not want a divorce. You don't want a divorce here. If it comes to that, make him ask for it. Start stashing money, start working out if you could survive here without him and with 2 children in your custody, then decide if you can bite your tongue til his contract has finished and you get back to UK/Australia. If you divorce there, you having sat here as a SAHM so he can pursue his career will be good for your settlement (but any cash you stash now will be included in that settlement, hiding it back in Australia will work against you in court). Sit tight, I'm sure hs tanty will blow over. I'd try to get those meds gone, their side effects are horrible internally. Totally agree with this comment. Do what it takes to calm the situation now for the children but get those passports back and don't ever let them out of your site. Make a plan as I think you're going to need one but do it in your time, stash the cash etc. If this was me, I'd be back in my home country already - sorry to say that but I can feel your fear just reading this and it's totally unacceptable. He's a bully and dangerous and no one should be treated this way. No regrets.

Morning ladies Whilst out on a run this morning I encountered something that made me feel quite uncomfortable which I feel I want to make the security aware of. Does anyone know if I can email Emaar security here for this? I don't really want to try to explain the the guy on the gate as I'm sure I'll not get my message across clearly and I can't seem to find a way to communicate with them on email when I've searched the web. Thanks

We have just moved house in AR and a shattered window was in hand to be replaced.....size of visible glass pane (excluding frame) is 33cm x 144cm. The cost of this was AED1500 from Emril. It will be double glazed tempered / safety glass, so not cheap. The guy from Emril told me it's a common problem because when they were building, they were given ridiculous deadlines and so the making of these windows was rushed and not done as well as they should hve been. This also happened (without incident) in our previous house, thankfully covered without issue by the landlord. Thanks Sue that's really helpful. I asked my neighbour about this and she also said it's common. Maybe the price I've been quoted isn't that far off then. Thanks - just hope the LL will cover it

I know it is a bit of a trek for you, but I had an expensive lace dress that needed taken up. Someone recommended Stitches, The Village Mall, Beach Road. They did an amazing job and didn't charge the earth either. Good Luck. Oh thank you for that. I'll see what else comes in maybe closer but will do that if nothing else is recommended. I know Beach Rd as there's a school uniform shop along there.
