My toddler sometimes says "put your phone away" before we play… subtle reminder! Hahaha. But we usually are pretty good about it. However, I have been following this awesome blog/facebook lady named Constance Hall (awesomely crude and absolutely hilarious, look her up) and recently she posted something about "the woman at the park on her phone"… point being, you don't know how many hours the mom at the park on her phone has already spent painting, playing, and imagining with her child and is now taking awhile to catch up on Facebook or with emails or sorting through photos, while her child is 'gasp' playing by himself at the park (which is a good thing for kids to do!!). I agree we need to be conscience about the hours we spend locked on our screens, but as women we also need to be careful not to judge each other and remember we are all human and not only "moms" :) I just really liked the point she was making.

Thanks for the update. It is much nicer to navigate. However I do miss being able to see how many replies a thread has. I prefer to see that then how many views a thread has. Just a little feedback :)

And will not perform in Dubai. Does anyone actually give a ..... ? I imagine the kids will It was the same when Robbie left Take That etc etc Beatlemania !! Its the same for this generation some girls become obsessed with boy bands. I cant see the appeal but im not a teenager !! exactly - completely bizare that this is brought up on a forum for women...... Why can't this be brought up on this forum?? Many of these ladies have teens who may care about this news. I for one don't care for 1D but I'm not bothered that this is a thread. I also don't usually comment on a post like yours but this bugs me. This is a forum for women and they can post whatever they want if they feel it's relevant. This isn't "izzy's forum" where all we should talk about is cricket and if it's Thursday yet...

Children in supposedly "advanced" Western countries are dying from preventable diseases due to ignorant, stupid, selfish parents refusing to vaccinate them. That's the bottom line. It makes me genuinely angry when I read justifications for non-vaccination involving twee, simpering nonsense like "gut feeling" and "you have to do what you feel is best for your family". If you're not a qualified scientist, a bit of Googling - even if it *is* "hours and hours" - does not suddenly make you an informed expert on the supposed dangers of vaccination. Yes, there is a small risk of a serious adverse reaction with any vaccination. There is a small risk of a serious adverse reaction with *any* form of medication, yet the same people who are screaming about the dangers of vaccination never seem to worry about medicines taken orally. And of course, there's a VASTLY bigger danger whenever you get into your car and drive on public roads, yet you never hear of anti-vaxxers refusing to drive their kids anywhere because "they have to do what is best for their family". The entire anti-vax movement is like something out of the Dark Ages. It terrifies me that people with the good luck to be born into a world with modern medical care can be so monumentally ignorant of the real science and so willing to be led by the spectacularly unqualified just because of something they read on the internet. Just to reiterate - and it's a sad indictment of the sheer amount of misinformation spread by the internet that it needs to be reiterated at all - vaccines do not, and never have caused autism. It's just an unhappy coincidence that vaccinations tend to be given around the time when evidence of autism begins to be noticeable in children. And while parents of autistic children frequently want to find something to blame for their child's condition, there's nothing TO blame. We still don't know what causes autism, but we DO know that it's not vaccination. Now can we please stop killing children by refusing to vaccinate them? I wasn't going to add to this debate because I know that pro-vaccination comments will always fall upon deaf ears… I used to debate and debate it but I've grown tired of the stupidity of so many anti-vaxers. We are now such a privilege generation who have never had to live through horrible epidemics so now we think it'll never happen to us. It's a sad sad thing that we are such an advanced society yet are taking such huge leaps backwards when it comes to vaccinations and vaccination education. Google is slowly becoming one of our worst enemies. ANYWAYS, like I said I wasn't going to bother adding my two bits (two very educated and knowledgable bits on the pro-vaccination side), but I absolutely HAD to log in just to say VelmaDoo- you couldn't have said it better. If I could give you a bazillion thumbs up I would. Thank you. (Also wanted to add to the anti-vaxxers: When your un-vaccinated child gets sick with A,B, or C, you're going to take her to the hospital, the same doctors who support vaccinations, and work along side of those who develop, test, and provide vaccinations, will be trying to cure your child- trying to save her LIFE. So, this community of medical science that you so firmly distrust when it comes to vaccinations, you will be putting your child's life in their hands to fix what you could have prevented. Shame on you.) edited by andreasmullet on 07/01/2015

I'm not 100% sure what services the shop offers but at the back of the Dubai Garden Center there's a cool looking place that does logos and printing. But like I said I'm not sure what all of their services are but maybe it's worth checking out. :)

Makes me wonder though - why all the panic about taking bags off a flight if the passenger doesn't board the flight. After all, tens of thousands of bags were carried unaccompanied last June and, doubtless, the same will apply this time. If a person purposely books a flight, checks his/her baggage, and then does not board the aircraft then that luggage becomes suspicious as he/she may have planted something in it. However if the airline or airport authority check baggage onto a different flight, due to loss of luggage or delayed luggage or whatever, it is not "suspicious" since it is at their doing that the bag has changed flights and is no longer accompanied by said owner. Someone would have to go through a lot of hoops to purposely "lose" a piece of luggage and have it board a plane without them. Am I making any sense?? I feel like I'm not :) :\:

What does my head in is the "children's meal" on Emirates airline. For breakfast at the beginning of this summer- at 6am, my two year old was given a big bowl of sugary fruit loops cereal, juice, and a chocolate muffin. o.O There wasn't a piece of fruit in sight- I mean how hard would it be to throw a banana on there. I find myself taping into my ninja stealth mode and swiftly hiding most of the meal before he sees it. Come on, who wants an airplane full of sugar-hyped kids at 6am headed for a 7 hour flight???!!! (On the return flight it was dinner time: chocolate mouse cake somethin' or other, a bag of m&m's, and cookies on the side of the usual hot meal mush. Awesome.)

DT, I have seen on my FB people posting their ice bucket challenge. I have not opened any links. But when I was watching the news in Holland and it actually discussed the disease, that is when I actually knew what ALS was. Not because of people throwing ice buckets, but because it was talked about. So for me personally, the campaign did absolutely nothing. so you have an opinion even though you haven't opened any links or bothered to find out WHY the campaign features iced water over the head...and now that you do know why, you still think it's waste... The campaign did do something then- it brought the topic up enough for the news to discuss it and showcase it on television, which you then watched and learnt something about the disease. So really, the campaign is working. It's raising interest, awareness, knowledge, and best of all money (and not only money for als, but for many other charities that people have decided to donate to in lieu.) All good in my books.

Interesting how even the charities have jumped on the bandwagon. The original challenge was for ALS - Motor Neurone Disease, but I do wonder how many peoplethat are pouring precious water over their heads are actually donating as well???? My money has gone to http://thewaterproject.org/ edited by Katalist on 24/08/2014 I think ALS has raised 3 million so far. :-) WOW that is awesome! Actually, the ice bucket challenge which was originally created for people to donate to als.org has raised more than that! Here's a quote from their website: [b'>Washington, D.C. (August 24, 2014) — As of Sunday, August 24, The ALS Association has received $70.2 million in donations compared to $2.5 million during the same time period last year (July 29 to August 24). These donations have come from existing donors and 1.3 million new donors to The Association.[/b'>

Do you do dishes everyday? My mom recently heard that they are from rubbing on the counter top in the kitchen… so far this seems like the only logical answer so I told her I'd wait until someone brings it up again on EW and find out if "doing the dishes" seems to be a trend :) Funnily enough, it came up on EW only a day or two later!!

Swatting away shop assistants who seem to think no one can buy lipstick without help. Baris Gallery is the worst for this - it almost like an attack of the clones as soon as you walk through the doors ... they literally stalk you as you walk around, and even if you say "i am just looking" they still are 2 mm behind you. There are a number of shops my daughter refuses to enter because of this! I brace myself before i go in certain shops Back home, when I was a teenager, the Gap was the worst for this. We used to play a game where you had to run into the store, touch all four walls, and get out before a shop assistant said anything to you. The Gap Game. edited to add: it was nearly impossible! edited by andreasmullet on 12/06/2014

You're almost there!!! Hang on :). And no, you're not a bad mum... Just a tired one understandably!! Why not just cut her days down to three a week or something until the end of the school year. There's a lot going on towards the end of the year that she'll enjoy attending. Talk to her teacher and let her know what's happening. Teachers appreciate knowing when to expect a child who is not coming in regularly. It helps with planning to know if she'll be in Sundays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays for example. This way the teacher could also let you know if there's a special event on a certain day or something. You'll get a bit of relief and she'll still get to finish off the school year.

It is very frustrating, we can only ever find them in ACE or C4. Each and every time I have bought them in C4 half the capsules don't pierce on the bottom so end up chucking them so I refuse to buy them there. You can get them online from Dolce Gusto so I might try this way. They also have flavours I haven't seen elsewhere. I've never had a problem with using the capsules, just finding them. Maybe something is wrong with your machine. When my parents visit I have them bring me the caramel latte and vanilla ones… so good! Yup, found that at Ace before but how annoying to go all the way to Ace just to buy coffee!! Might look into Nespresso :)

90 k for FS1??!! Did anyone visit the school? what facilities do they offer to justify those fees? I don't know about FS1 but for Y3, your kid will have to sit for a 3 hours assessment. Small class, less than 10. Well, how many parents can afford 90K anyway? The Head Teacher is accessible even at drop off time .... and there are even coffee/tea and cakes for parents ;-) Ooooohhh, so for 90K you get coffee/tea and cakes. That makes sense then. :\:

We're in Palmera and love it. It's much closer to the main roads than Al Reem so you're not having to go over so many speed bumps to get in and out. We have children, however there are all "child-less" couples around us in the 2, 2+study, and 3 bedrooms in our cluster. And they all love it- in fact I met our new neighbour the other night and he and his wife love it out here compared to when they lived in Old Town. I guess it depends on what you're after :) (Palmera has 2 beds, 2 plus study, and 3 beds in each cluster) edited by andreasmullet on 22/02/2014

Odd. Ours was delivered by courier. Anyways, I have a question that might seem a bit daft: can I use my HSBC visa electron (debit) or only HSBC visa credit card when using the vouchers. And can you use two vouchers on one trip- like say you had a group of four going to the waterpark. I know the book explains the rules but I just don't want to get to Abu Dhabi and realize I read it wrong. :)

This would be a much nicer thread if it were about acts of kindness others have shown you. I find there are many really kind people out there. It is surprising how often, when it think the traffic can't get worse, someone in a big Landcruiser or something else equally a huge will stop and let me in or in the supermarket someone will invite me to go ahead of them if I only have one or two items and they have a trolley full. The other day I had to park on one of the slip roads off S.Zayed, where the car dealerships are. Unfortunately I couldn't get over so had to park on the opposite side of the road from the shops, so had to cross the road. I had my one year old with me. We stood for ten minutes just waiting for a break in the extremely busy and fast traffic. I was about to get back in the car, stick the kid back in his car seat, and make my way around the block to somehow get back to park on the right side. A lovely man in a massive Land Cruiser came up and was suddenly driving down the middle of the road and then stopped, turning his car diagonally to stop all of the traffic behind him. It was such a kind gesture and so unexpected. I waved. And ran! And waved again. Not only did I think how kind that was but was equally impressed how quick someone could think to do a fancy move like that!!

I can't decide if this is all true or not. If it is I feel so sorry for the OP, if it isn't true well then it's been an interesting read. I read back on her posts just now and one thing that I question is that sometimes she has one child and sometimes it's "children" or "kids". She has left the country with kids at Christmas and left the country in the end with just the dd. so that's strange... But I'm not a very skeptical person and like to have faith in honesty so it's a tough one to sort out.

We stayed home but I'm just curious, how was the traffic AFTER the event? I'm just imagining a gridlock all along the beach as everyone who may have set up camp at 4, 5, 6, or 9 all leaving at the same time. Same goes for Downtown…may have been clever to get there early, but there's still the headache of getting out!! What time would they have rolled into bed at!!??

There is this shop in Mirdiff City Center that might have exactly what you need. Unfortunately I have no idea what it's called!! It's upstairs just down a little ways from Lakeland. It's this shop that sells vintage/country/shabby chic stuff and it looks a lot like the interior of a Shakespeare's Cafe! Sorry i don't know the name, I believe it is a French name but I can't really remember.

We ate there today as we heard they were having a soft opening to start things off, a bit of a dry run I guess. We enjoyed it. The staff were all very nice, still learning the ropes but all of the managers were there and everything was well taken care of. The menu is limited for now while they test the waters I suppose, but it will be expanded. We ordered the burger which was great although they had quite a few being sent back only because it seemed undercooked. However it was actually the wagu beef in the patty that maintains a reddish colour. We had sent ours back only to learn this afterwards, but it tasted great. Also had the brie quiche which was yummy as well. Enjoyed a few drinks and the drink menu had some nice looking cocktails on it. All in all we enjoyed the experience and look forward to returning once the menu is expanded. They also have a playground for the kiddos which was an awesome idea for the restaurant. It'll be nice to have an additional option for a restaurant at the golf course- was sort of growing tired of the clubhouse. Overall, great first impressions! :) edited by andreasmullet on 25/10/2013

I've had this problem before with the taxis taking up all the spots. I was pregnant at the time and had to park at the very back, it was quite hot, and I waddled straight to the security guard and totally played up my pregnancy card- which I honestly didn't do often! Worked a charm and he promptly went and all the taxis but those in designated spots moved. For awhile they stuck to the rules but I noticed that they slowly trickle their way back in. Just have a word with security, they'll go tell the taxi's to move it! At least they should tell them!

it's not possible to read it all - there's too much lol but loads of people who use the site have still never bothered with the forum.. most people I know don't use it. When I went to one of their own coffee mornings none of the ladies knew what it was and even the host reckoned she only had a vague recollection... Did you believe them? Even in the days when this site was buzzing ( with plenty of catfights etc) nobody admitted to being on it - but they all had a strong opinion about it :D yes I know that, i'm not stupid, and yes they did seem genuinely blank...although at least 2 of them were new to Dubai and by the end one of them said she'd look it up !! lol Not accusing you of being stupid -it was a lighthearted post as it just crossed my mind that some of them may not have wanted to "out" themselves edited by Genie on 11/09/2013 I would have thought the same but no, they seemed genuine enough... really puzzling to be honest... I believe it. There are loads of people I'm sure, who have been directed to the site but don't ever read the forum. I'm the opposite, I read the forum but have never once looked elsewhere on the site. Never clicked an ad, never navigated anywhere else but to the forum. I do agree that the lack of entertaining posts does, in the end, lower viewership which in turn lowers the amount of posters posting on actual helpful/info threads. It all goes together: keep a healthy balance of entertainment mixed in with helpful tips! Makes for a busy forum!! (plus everyone gets what they want out of it! I definitely don't post on the scandal-filled threads but I DEFINITELY love reading them! haha)
