I'm not sure. It seems unthinkable that someone who has overcome so many challenges and been such a hero would do something like that, but there seems to be a lot of evidence against him. Lance Armstrong sprang to mind when I read that, I'm afraid :(

I thought EK staff got housing and schooling paid but OP states that they have to pay housing and although they will get schooling, the amount she states won't pay for GEMS school. If they get the EK card then that will also help loads. EK supply fully paid for company housing or you can elect to take an allowance and do your own thing (rent, buy, whatever). Schooling is at a fixed rate per child and it is up to you whether you put the kid into a more expensive school and pay the difference or find a cheaper option. edited by Roadrunner on 05/09/2013 The OP doesn't appear to have the company housing option, which, if I were in her shoes and were offered it, I would have chosen, even if it meant a lower monthly income.

Anyone know what the fine is for those involved in the illegal employment of private tutors? You do know there's been a crack-down on this here in recent years? Teachers tutoring pupils from the schools which employ them are likely to be worst hit if discovered, I believe. But I could be wrong, and like the illegal employment of part-time maids, it may be something which we're warned about having major repercussions, but in the event, the authorities mostly turn a blind eye to it. ETA: If I were a private tutor in Dubai, I'd be wary of touting for business on these pages. edited by Vdella on 05/09/2013

In a rush, so just a quick response. In your shoes , I would def have a look at some other cheaper schools. Although many people are happy with Gems school, I believe there are several schools providing just as good, if not a better education at a much cheaper price. The only advantage with Gems, is that if you got a job as a TA there, you get some of the school fees paid. Many other schools don't contribute to fees of the TA's. Typically TA jobs are around AED5 to AED6 k a month. Re a villa, again consider fact you will have higher utilities in a villa than an apartment. Don't rule out a ground floor apartment with 'garden' area. Good luck. Do you know about the EK benefits? I thought that EK benefits included housing, housing fees and DEWA bills, as well as excellent medical insurance and payment of school fees? I suppose it depends on the employee's grade and the contract they negotiated? Are there fewer benefits for employees joining now than there used to be? OP, no matter how frugal a life you lead, and even if you "downgrade" to a cheaper school, I really can't see you finding a villa you can afford, unless it is well subsidised by EK In the first place. Part-time jobs for trailing spouses pay peanuts here, too, though they are not too hard to find in schools and nurseries. I completely understand your longing for sun instead of snow and I hope it works out well for you and your family.

Peripatetic is a lovely Greek word, particularly useful for those who wish to emulate Aristotle. I didn't have to look up either of those words (peripatetic or emulate) in a dictionary, Appletiser, I happen to have been well enough educated to know them without having to use a dictionary. Possibly I am twenty or thirty years older than you are. Or simply better educated.

I left my 5 year old daughter to spend an evening with a neighbour whose parenting I trusted absolutely - she was a foster mother as well as having 4 of her own. For months and years afterwards, my child suffered nightmares. I realized why when I was told dorter had been left to watch the Cartoon Network with the older children. Unfortunately, the film showing that evening was "The Wizard of Oz", which is pretty scary even for adults..

i was spanked regularly by my parents. That is why I made it a point of principle not to strike my own child. She has been and still is difficult but I don't think regular spankings when she was younger would have changed that. At least she knows violence is unacceptable and not an expression of love. Unlike our own dear Nigella, apparently.

Too long a list, ShannonB, here's a link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Corporal_punishment_in_the_home#Where_corporal_punishment_in_the_home_is_outlawed Also, countries where corporal punisment is illegal in schools: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/School_corporal_punishment AnonDubai, it's legal to have children rolling around in front seats of cars without being safely attached in a car seat and with a seat belt here, but that doesn't mean it's a good thing. Am not sure if this is a deliberate attempt at a TNT? edited by Vdella on 27/06/2013 edited by Vdella on 27/06/2013

Growing up is difficult enough in this day and age. It's not as if she wants to wear a boob tube and mini-skirt and go pole-dancing, this is in fact a way of her preserving her modesty in front of her peers. Just buy her a little training-bra or somesuch as described below, don't make a big deal of it as that will just add to her embarrassment and get on with life. You're going to have far more to worry about as she gets older, this is not a battle that needs to be fought.

If I were in the same position as you, I would go for the British curriculum. If your child/children intend to return to the UK for their future study/career(s), there is no point their doing the IB as the British curriculum is better regarded by many British universities who frequently require higher grades for entry from IB students than for A level students. Also, the IB curriculum is only available in certain private schools in the UK, and rarely found in British state schools, which is a factor to bear in mind for your return to the UK.

Welcome to Dubai, Control Freak - I wonder how long you'll be here before you find you have to change your name? ;) To add to what Kimball said, you have to make sure you go to the right Zaks as not all branches stock the same schools' uniforms - see here: http://www.gemswellingtonacademy-dso.com/contents.php?pageid=1513&parentid=87 Good luck, try and get there early on a weekday and avoid week-ends if possible. In my experience, there's little point trying to order ahead as their sizes are so random, you'll only have to try them on in the shop anyway and get them altered/change to a different size when you arrive, so no time saved, I'm afraid.

WELL SAID, Completely agree! Rachel in Dubai...please make room behind the parapet as I am probably going to join you there. Someone once said to me that she would rather be shafted now and again than live her life thinking everyone was out to get her or con her. I think that's a great philosophy. We have no control over the actions of others, which may or may not be genuine. All we do have control of is how we choose to respond. Yes the maid might be scamming, but she might be in genuine need too. The Good Samaritan did not pause to think whether it was a trick. So if you are in a position to help then do so, because we might need help one day. Agreed. Whether with friends or agency maids or whoever, if I had the money available to lend, I would look on it as a gift and be pleasantly surprised if it was repaid. Oh boy, I guess you have never had the office boy kissing your feet as another 'sister' was at deaths door........there are actually people out there who will ask and ask and ask and make you feel like you are loaded. They cannot stop themselves, they are raised this way. No, I haven't, but if I had the money to lend, I think I would give it the first time I was asked and take it from there.

Depends on what you want from a school. If education is your first priority and you want your kid to go to ivy league university then you should put her in emirates international school in Meadows. Seriously? I haven't heard anything complimentary about that school at all! Just the way the traffic is managed puts me off. Possibly the right contacts, though?

As others have said, in your own particular circumstances, the landlord is not obliged to give you notice at all as you are in breach of contract so have forfeited your legal rights. Your LL could chuck you out on the street whenever he wanted, with the law on his side. In your present circumstances, you have no legal rights. How many different ways do you have to be told you haven't got a legal leg to stand on?

Agoda seems to be quite good. There's also e-bookers. Are those amongst the ones you've already tried? I'm a huge fan of Bab al Shams (I know, completely different) and they seem to do good deals if you book way ahead or you can get a 20% discount using the Entertainer travel book, I believe.
