I was about to say the same as Dally. You might physically still have a driving licence but it technically won't be valid as you're no longer a resident. You can be sure the insurance company won't pay out if, God forbid, you have an accident. If I were you, I'd stop driving til you get your visa sorted, or at least get a hire car instead so you're 100% legal. This isnt correct - driving license validity is not connected to residence visa - hence the reason your driving license doesnt automatically get cancelled when your visa does (or they would ask you to surrender it along with your Emirates ID). You legally have a license to drive in the UAE while the license is valid (renewing it might be harder). My husband has been driving here for the last 2 years without a residency visa, and uses my car to do his visa runs, without any problems. The below was published in the National last year ..... "It used to be the case that only someone with a UAE residency visa could use a UAE licence, but this was overturned by a Dubai court a few years ago, so theoretically it is possible to get a replacement licence even if a person no longer has a visa. It was stated that even if a residency visa is cancelled it does not mean that the driving licence is invalid, so it is usable for the time remaining until it expires. However, a driving licence cannot be renewed without residency." The RTA was trying to change the law so that professional drivers (truck drivers, taxi driver etc) had their licence cancelled when their residence visa ended, but for everyone else it remains valid.

So aggressive! Fact is you asked a question I responded as per my friends experience. If you want an answer valid for yourself then phone your bank and find out first hand what the process is. Its not intended to be aggressive, more astounded, so apologies if its come across as that I am waiting on someone from my bank getting back to me, and I have also contacted the Abu Dhabi government portal to get a view from them:thinking:

Nonsensical or not that is the procedure. If you are leaving Dubai and moving to Abu Dhabi they expect it to be with a completely clear slate. Check with your bank if you are not sure. But all your clearances, health checks and so on will be done from scratch. So you're telling me I cant take on a job in Abu Dhabi because I have an existing loan? Even though the job pays more, meaning I am in a better financial picture to pay off said loan? So if I lost my job and got a new one in Abu Dhabi, I still couldn't take it as I wouldn't have clear credit? Security clearances, health checks etc I understand - this is part of the visa process and the new company already told me this is the case for all Abu Dhabi visa's - but they never asked about having no loans - and certainly not about leaving the country for a month! As I'm not moving out of the UAE, and salary will continue to be paid into the same UAE bank account I see no benefit to the bank in forcing closure The exit flight condition is as stated in our employee regulations - if they dont want to provide it I'm fine with that, but the exit conditions dont appear to cover the option of remaining in the UAE. Obviously this I would discuss with them if and when i handed in my resignation.

Not sure how this will work for you as I had a friend who was moving from Dubai to Abu Dhabi and before they would clear him, his bank loan had to be completely cleared and bank account closed. His visa was cancelled and he had to leave the country for a month and come back later and everything was set up again in Abu Dhabi. It might just have been his company that insisted on doing it that way, but I know he had to scramble to pay off his loan. That sounds very extreme! And nonsensical.......no way I can pay off my loan this early, so that certainly wont be happening!! I don't think that is normal....why would he have to remain out of the country for a month? I think its more likely the bank will freeze my account....but I can deal with that, and ensure there is sufficient money available to cover the loan payment until I get a salary from the new employer - just not sure if it impacts your ability to travel (realistically it shouldn't, as you haven't defaulted on anything.....but nothing is ever straightforward!) I have been told for Abu Dhabi you have to go through the whole security clearance process again.....even although I've already got a valid residency visa, but they just tell you not to hand in your notice until they know its going through (exactly the same as when I joined my existing company)

You don't get fined for being between 30-40 days and there is no point going before day30- they won't renew the visa. As I said, my husband went on day 27 and they renewed the visa - so this isn't a hard and fast rule, at least at the Al Dara border crossing in RAK. And I know of a lady in RAK who was fined when going on day 33

There seems to be no end of confusion about this......and also the land and air borders seem to be applying different rules. My hubby did a visa run from RAK last weekend (on day 27) and had no issues at all - passport was stamped as normal for another 30 days I have heard the 30 days grace was no longer available (and some have been fined), but also know of others in RAK who have done a visa run over the 30 days with no problems at all! Cant find any clear information anywhere online

posted on the Maid forum, but doesnt seem to get much traffic....so trying here! Hi ladies, I think we will need to hire a full time maid (given the cost difference between a few hours and every day) but get confused by the mine field of sponsorship, visa rules, etc.....hoping someone can help shed some light! If a maid is already in the UAE on a tourist visa, can I still transfer her directly to residency without the need to exit? (I'm unclear on tourist v's Visit visas.....and cant find any clear information) Do I still need to get an Entry Permit first (which seems a waste if she's already here) I'm on a Dubai visa, so she will be sponsored through Dubai, but I live in RAK........I know that there are insurance policies in Dubai specifically for maids - but will any of them cover anything in RAK or would they all require her to travel to Dubai? (If so are there any other low cost alternatives?) Can an Ethiopian be hired as a maid? I cant find the up-to-date 'Approved' list and I know their government has issues a few years back Does her visa medical have to be done in Dubai, or can I get it done locally in a medical centre in RAK? Thanks in advance!!!

Hi ladies, just a quick question on the confusing rules here! If I sponsor my husband, is he allowed to work if I provide an NOC? I had thought not, but have seen other posts saying women sponsored by their husbands have the same 'Not permitted to work' stamped on their visa, and that the NOC gives them permission? I also saw an agency asking for people on husband/.wife visa.......so I'm just not clear if its correct or not!

Does anyone actually understand the conditions around alcohol licences? I dont live in Dubai therefor I cannot get a Dubai alcohol licence......does this mean I am a 'tourist' when I visit Dubai, or that I shouldnt be able to drink at all when in Dubai? (going to make nights out rather dull!) If its illegal to drink without a licence across the UAE, why do the Northern Emirates sell alcohol without a licence? It kinda feels like just another way for Dubai to make money (especially as Abu Dhabi dont charge for their licence)

We are moving to RAK (Al Hamra) at the end of the month. We will only have a small amount of items to move (we are in a one bed) but I really need to try and keep my costs down. Can anyone recommend a trustworthy removal company that will operate from Al Ghadeer to Al Hamra. I would really like one that accepted payment by credit card, as cash flow will be tight due to the million and one other deposits I have to pay, but realize that is asking a lot here! I would also need them to disassemble and reassemble one large four poster bed. If anyone can provide an estimate of the cost, that would also be much appreciated!!;);)

A friend will have her visa cancelled next month but won't be leaving for a few more months. She has a UAE driving licence, is she legal to still drive her own car on it once her visa has been cancelled? I'm thinking no.... I thought the opposite, as your driving licence, once issued is not linked to your visa. There was an article in the news recently saying there was a proposal put forward to link the licences of taxi and truck drivers to their visa, hence the reason I assumed that your licence remained valid. (Insurance asks for a valid UAE driving licence, not a valid UAE visa) Driving before your visa is issued is different, as you cant have a driving licence issued until your visa is sorted.

We got one done for a table in dragon mart, pass the dragon ( keep him on your left) the parking was after the covered parking area , go in the textile entrance, turn left and its a tiny picture frame shop on your right( in the corner) I'm so sorry I can't remember the name or shop number. We were getting pictures framed there and I asked by chance,it was done the next day. Thank you Dollybird! I had a feeling DragonMart was going to be the answer! Appreciate the directions.....I have been known to wander around there aimlessly, as my sense of direction seems to fail totally!!!

Hi, hoping this is a really simple question that I just can't find the answer to anywhere! We are moving to Al Ghadeer next month, so will have an Abu Dhabi tenancy contract, however I am on a Dubai residence visa. Can I apply for an Abu Dhabi alcohol licence? I already have a Dubai one, but if a licenced store (like Spinneys) was to open in the complex that would obviously be more convenient for me! u need to have one where your visa is.... My employer says that you have to have one where your tenancy is  - this is the sort of confusion that seems to be a normal circumstance of the supposedly 'United' Emirates! ;););)

dubaipetfood.com has cat / dog flaps. I got my rfid one from amazon and shop n shipped it. Unfortunately a cat flap isn't any use. It's a glass patio door so there's no way I can fit a flap. (And I doubt my landlord would appreciate it anyway!) I need something that can actually be inserted between the door and the frame, with the cat flap fitted (and which we can remove if we actually want to open the door. I can't think if any other way to allow the cats access to the outside when we aren't home, as its a ground floor apartment so I can't leave a window open

If the drive is already formated, and there are files on it, then I dont think you will be able to do this. If you want to be able to share the hard drive between both Mac and PC, then you would need to move all the files back onto a PC, reformat the drive (I think FAT32 can be shared by both) and then replace the files. Or if you just want to remove the files from your Mac get a new hard drive and move the files from your Mac to that! ;) You can reformat it to whichever format is required before moving anything.

You are correct....its now one of the (many) required documents to submit when applying to sponsor someone. Rentals are arranged very quickly here. You can sign a contract and move pretty much immediately - I would reccommend that you get an Ejari for the rental contract though, as this is an attested version which Immigration prefer. When negotiating with rental agents tell them you insist on an Ejari being provided (if you rent with one of the big agencies like Better Homes, this is provided as a matter of course) It costs about 200dhs, but saves so many problems. You can still come out with your husband. As you're on British Passports you get a 30 day visit visa on arrival, and all that means is every 30 days you and the kids would need to do visa runs (to Hatta) until your husband has all the neccessary documentation in place to apply for sponsorship. It really depends on whether you want to be out here with him, and look for a rental together, or if you would rather wait until he has everything in place.

If her employment/residency visa was only just cancelled, then what was the one-month extension an extension to?? She cant be holding two different visa's at the same time. If she is here on a cancelled visa she has 30 days to either obtain a new visa, or exit, but you may need to apply for an entry permit first (I think around 300AED), and then pay the visa run fee (around AED500) in order to start the process for the new residency visa.

I bought my husband a Breitling here in Dubai and it was quite a bit cheaper than buying the same in the UK (I didnt factor in claiming back the VAT, as we fly through Glasgow, and there are no VAT officials based there, so my one attempt at doing this didnt work and the paperwork mysteriously vanished!) You can negotiate in the store no problem - just as what deal they will do for cash. They even had to order in the particular style I wanted, and still gave me quite a bit off the ticket price.

It's a tough one. We recently adopted our dog from K9 friends. Our rent will go up by at least 20% according to the RERA calculator. I am fortunate enough to be in position where my husband's company will absorb this hike. Had we not been in this position I would have probably not gone ahead with the adoption. Like you Lolacat I don't think its fair to have a dog in an apt unless its small. I just wonder how many pets are missing out on adoptions because of rental increases. Just not fair on the 4 legged population of Dubai if you ask me Not only those missing out on adoption....how many animals are being dumped by owners who have had to move to apartments/areas which wont accommodate their pets? I would never defend anyone who dumps an animal like rubbish, but the situation here is declining rapidly that people are being pushed to find cheaper and cheaper accommodation and the options available are getting more and more limited by the day .... and the attitude towards animals here is such that they will be one of the first things to go! I have a medium sized dog, and we already live in an apartment (admittedly a pretty large one with a big balcony) but I am struggling to pay my rent as my DH has recently lost his job.......I have looked around to see what is within my budget and still afford some outside space, and I have to say have found virtually zero.

Hoping someone out there may know of any vacancies or anyone who may be looking to hire. My hubby has been made redundant from his position here in Dubai, and finding it difficult to get anything else. He comes from a railway (maintenance and renewal) background in the UK, and was working with Dubai metro, but they have decided to reduce their workforce quite significantly, and cut costs by using Filipino qualified staff instead of UK/Westerners. Ideally he would like something in a similar vein - I know there are big rail projects in AUH, Qatar and Saudi, but its trying to get hold of the right person who can help you get a foot in the door! He's willing to be versatile though, and try anything else that is likely to provide a half decent income! Even some part-time or temporary work would be good for now - its not ideal for him to be stuck at home (especially during Ramadan) and I'm sure he'd just like to be doing something useful! If anyone has any ideas, or knows of any jobs coming up, please please please let me know! :-) TIA

Yes is the simple answer. Your landlord may think differently though. There are lots and lots of dogs here. Should probably rename it "Dog City". Haha!! Yes this is very true.....Motor City is very dog friendly. Your tenancy contract may stipulate 'no pets' (which is down to your landlord) but you can get a form from the management agents to register the dog with them. TBH my contract also states no pets, but they know we have a dog (and provided the contact details to register him!)....contract also states no satellite dishes or BBQ's but you'll see from a quick glance that noone much bothers about these either!

We took out a loan last year, but banks will not lend the amount needed over one year, so I'm still paying that off....and it end up costing us a fair bit more in the long run so I'm not really wanting to go down that road again. My question is, if I cant pay in one cheque, can they increase the rent by more than the RERA guidelines? (I find the whole cheque thing utter nonsense anyway....but my company policy is to only advance housing in two installments and not one, so laying your hands on that large lump sum is really difficult) I would be happy with a slight increase in the total, if they would spread it over a few cheques!

I dont mind reporting it to the police, I'm just wondering is there any benefit in bringing them out to show them where it happened (and who has probably caused it) or will I still end up paying the excess on my insurance anyway? If so, I'll just go to the police station myself and get the form so i can claim the insurance.

I live in one of the Fox Hill buildings in Motorcity. Not sure if there are studios in these buildings but can tell you about the area. Also would not recommend having Emirates NBD Properties as your landlord. Been trying to get hold of their leasing department for the last 2 months to no success. I absolutely love living here though. There are so many convenient places, you don't actually need to leave Motorcity over a weekend. Its a friendly family orientated place and I find it very peaceful. Love sitting on the balcony over a weekend. Downsides are that you do need a car to get around as there are no public transport links. Plus Emicool is expensive. Rents are also shooting up here. Thank you so much for your feedback. I dont quite understand the Emirates NBD thing? Have they purchased lots of buildings and so they may end up being my landlord or? It would be nice to have a metro station nearby although not sure if that will be happening soon? I live in Newbridge in Motor City, and I also love it. Apartments are good and spacious (although I havent been in a studio) and all have balconies of one size or another. Having the shops and food places (and medical centre and pharmacies) so close is a real bonus, and its a lovely green area with plenty of outdoor space. Maintenance for me is done via my agent (BetterHomes) and I have to say it is first class....anything reported is dealt with almost immediately, and the building has a dedicated maintenance team (in addition to Serve U who maintain the communal areas). EmiratesNBD may well own a lot of the apartments, but definately not all....there are many private landlords, and most of my building is owned by DIFC and managed by BetterHomes. There are no studios in my building, and I think a 1 bed may set you back 80k + nowadays, but other buildings may be a bit cheaper. All of the apartments are basically a similar size and style, but the outdoor space varies (Foxhill and Newbridge have huge balconies....but it is harder to find any apartments in these) Also as a bonus, most of the apartments should come with all the white goods....saving you a bit of outlay You do need a car, but I think this is the case for most of Dubai. Road access etc is good, and all the apartments have their own parking.

You should DE-register the car, otherwise you will accumilate fines for now having it registered. There are companies that will buy cars for scrap or whatever. Why don't you just advertise it on Dubizzle - someone will take it. So I can do this? Do you know whats required? This is ideal because at least it would stop me worrying about it! Will it cause any problems if I try to sell it without any registration?

Did you complete the form, regarding your rental income for renting your home out, as that makes sure you don't get taxed on your income as you are now abroad. That should prove you are no longer a resident He's completed the P85 form...and that includes the rental income. Is that the form you mean? I had thought that, as we are now into a new tax year, he would just become non-resident, until such time as he returns to the UK and starts earning. I accept that if we were out of the UK less than 5 (I think) years, we may be liable for tax...but dont understand how you can be non-liable for tax, yet still liable for NI!

Oh oh, I can't edit the subject line, it should say Anyone. oh well! We have an adorable dog who usually goes to our friends in the holidays, but this year we are both away at the same time. She's far too sociable to go into kennels and just loves to be around people. When I put her lead on to take her for a walk she licks my hand to say thanks. I digress... We thought we might be able to take her with us this year as her injections are up-to-date and she's had the special one for rabies etc. anyone ever done this? Anyone want a lovely pet for 6 weeks summer hols? A 10 min walk twice a day is all she asks. Thanks for any info. edited by ShellAR on 22/04/2013 edited by ShellAR on 22/04/2013 Where is home? A lot will depend on the country you want to travel to, and the airline you can use. If its the UK, no chance. Dogs can only enter the UK as manifest cargo.....far more expensive than excess baggage, and need a whole heap of paperwork to go along with it! Likewise there is a fair bit involved in bringing an animal back into Dubai, and I'm not sure it matters if she's been here before or not. Its not like the Pet passport programme in Europe, as far as I know! Also, a lot of the big airlines will now no longer accept animals as baggage (irrespective of the import rules of the country) and will insist on you booking her as cargo. You would really need to check this with them too.

She needs to do the medical before the visa application as the medical results form part of the application. Every thing else looks ok to me. The pink slip is an Entry Permit, not a visa. OP is correct in what's she's said, entry permit us valid for 60 days and allows the maid to reside, and work, until the actual visa is processed. The medical has to be done as part of the visa process, after the pink slip is issued.

Hi, My kids never went to this school, and I would not even consider after we went through during a visit in 2011. I was desperate looking for a school after two weeks in Dubai and no luck for my DD. The relocation company helping me called saying Winchester had a seat to go there on the next day. My husband took our daughter and the translated documents and they were treated very bad. The person who saw them ignored the documents and said that my DD would have to repeat a school year, this without any kind of assessment, only because she did not speak English. No support was offered and it was take it or leave it. We decided not to accept and look for another school, luckly we found one a couple of days later. I have some friends with kids there, none of them is very happy about it, but they say it is close to home or reasonable price, but never anything about the quality. Hi Brazilianindubai I saw in another thread that you live in Al Furjan. This is where we are looking to move to. Do you mind if I ask which school your kids attend? Is there transport etc available? The main reason I was interested in Winchester is its so close by. My DS is in Year 7, so we need a secondary school.

Have you tried the pharmacies at City and American Hospital... I was under the impression these would only give you the drugs if prescribed by the same hospital (American / city). I had a script filled by City pharmacy about 18 months ago that wasn't prescribed by them, so unless they have changed it should be ok. Maybe call them first to make sure. Life Pharmacy on Al Wasl Road - the big 24hr one. My son needs a narcotic perscription filled every month and this is the only pharmacy I've found which holds stock.

It is amazing what greed can make people do.... and i agree with the "fake jump" bit. There has been an increase of 20-30% in some parts of Dubai. However, many agents and landlords are beating a drum of "oh my god, rents increased by 50%, they will double in this year, quadruple in 3 years" edited by Arch on 06/02/2013 You would be surprised how fake these prices really are. We were looking for a 3 bhk independent villa. All agents (which mainly include the top agencies) quoted unreasonable prices for places like barsha south, al quoz south, al warqa and even places like khawaneje and al mizhar (were were not fussy with the location as we needed a minimum 15K sqft plot for our dogs and cats to play). All the quotes for these places were not less then AED 150K to 175K and most of these places had no proper road access nor any groceries etc. We got frustrated with these agent who kept telling us "Oh the prices are going to increase next week" or "We have a ready client for this price", so we decided to chuck all these "GREEDY" agents and find one ourselves through LL's directly. Took us 3 months (we started early) and we networked ourselves with lots of LL's and eventually, we had LL's calling us. We found a fantastic villa in Al Barsha 2 which was everything we were looking for and paid AED 110K only, while we were quoted by various agents for the same villa AED 165K in the past. After speaking to various LL's most of them do not like giving their properties to agents as they do not want to pay a commission to the agent nor do they want to do all the work for the agent (such as showing the villa, etc) and then paying agents to do nothing. Our LL met us at a typing center and we drew up our contract as per Dubai Municipality and have even registered this property with Ejari now. After moving into our new home, I find a lot of people doing what we have done. Everyday I meet people searching for villa's and are either stopping people when they are outside and asking if we are moving or we know of any other villa in the vicinity for rent so they can get the LL's direct contact. 3 months later, the same villas we had seen, are still in the market, prices are reducing slowly (but still high) and every-time an agent calls me now, I give them a piece of my mind as they deserve it. Echochic How did you manage to contact LL's directly? we are also trying to find a villa at the moment, and agents seem to have just set a price amongst themselves.....a good 30k above what was asked late last year!!

Go and see Dr Mazen at the EHL Clinic in the Dubai Mall. My husband was told he has IBS and lived with it for years avoiding spicy and rich food but the symptoms were still there. He was diagnosed in the UK. We went to see Dr Mazen and he performed a colonoscopy ( wasnt done on the NHS in the UK ) and he found that he is suffering from Collitis. Second this, Dr Mazen is my saviour, i was told i had IBS and have been suffering for almost 3 years, i have seen Dr Mazen had tests and a proper diagnosis and its not IBS, its very easy for a Dr to mistake the symptons without investigating. Im getting there its a slow process but have felt better than i have in years, im not 100% but still. Please get fully checked out first as you may be dealing with something completely different. Dr Mazen will see you right. Many intestinal disorders have similar symptoms, which can make diagnosis difficult. [u'>Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and inflammatory bowel disease (which includes both Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis, collectively known as IBD) in particular have several symptoms in common[/u'>. The differences between IBD and IBS are actually significant, although it might not seem that way on the surface. IBS and Ulcerative Colitis Are Different IBS is often confused with ulcerative colitis or colitis, but they are not the same condition. IBS is a syndrome, not a disease, it does not lead to colon cancer, and it does not cause bleeding. Ulcerative colitis, however, is a disease, can put patients at risk for colon cancer, and bleeding is a common symptom. Differences in Treatments for IBD and IBS Therapy and medications for IBS vary hugely from those for IBD. An incorrect diagnosis and treatment plan can not only be ineffective but in some cases also be dangerous. :-) edited by egg on 05/02/2013 Have either of you visited Dr Mazen recently? i've googled and cant find any record of him! The only Dr Mazen listed seems to be a pediatrician. My DH is troubled badly by IBS (or something similar) and I would really like him to see someone.
