I agree with everything you say, but surely you must have noticed that before you moved. Tecom has always been like that. It's a bit like moving to International City and complain it's a dump after you moved in. To be fair nothing wrong to work for improvement. Silvstet, obviously If we had a choice then we would not be living in Tecom - who would?! Budget and proximity to the metro were massive factors in our decision since I don't drive and we have a new addition to the family so need more space. Now I'm on maternity leave I would like to do something to help improve the area and hopefully encourage a community spirit among the residents.

Rant alert - I've been living in Tecom for the last 4 months (living in Dubai 4 years) and paying an absolute fortune for a pretty standard 2 bedroom apartment: 1) Neighbouring areas of Media City etc are kept absolutely spotless and Tecom is a complete rubbish tip. 2) There are no pavements apart from on the main road - From my building I have to walk with a stroller on the road to get to the nearest shop with vehicles flying past me. 3) Why is there no greenery apart from outside the odd serviced apartment? Even random roundabouts in the middle of nowhere have flowers and palm trees. 4) Why is flyering of 'special services' tolerated? As I write this I can see out the window 5 guys flyering cars with business cards advertising 'massage' services. This is not just a one off - everyday the ground is littered with these cards. Is this just a Tecom thing or are other areas similar? I am really fed up with the lack of care and attention given to the area and really tempted to start a [i'>Tidy up Tecom[/i'> campaign - although I have no idea where to start, if anyone has any suggestions. It is a real eyesore in Tecom. It is strange that the massage cards seem to only target this area in new Dubai! Good luck if you do start the campaign. But have you tried complaining to the Municipality. Maybe start a petition off in your building, add to notice boards in Carrefour and other supermarkets nearby. It does look as though more food establishments are opening up so maybe you could leave petitions with them to display. I certainly only go to Tecom for my nails and yoga, but not much else. I wouldn't opt to socialise there. TBG - thanks for the suggestion - I'll definitely make a complaint to the Municipality first and see how that goes.

SL I absolutely loved living in the Greens and would move back in a flash if the rents decreased enough for the 2 beds. Yup Tecom prices are ridiculous now and i guess it's all down to the close proximity of the metro.

I'd like to get a print made of a watercolour I did myself to give as a Christmas present. Anyone know how/where I can get this done please? I did think of the local Kodak shop but I suspect it would be on photographic paper which I don't want. Thanks You could speak Stu Williamson Xpress - they have contact details on their Facebook page. I used to work for a gallery and have spoken to them in the past about photographing original artwork and printing it. I have never actually used them for this but their framing was very good.

I have not read all the responses so apologies if I am duplicating information. It is not legal for Emaar to stop services to the tenant when the landlord has not paid community fees owing. There was a statement made by RERA earlier this year to this effect. I have copied the links to the news reports advising of this. Perhaps take them to the Emaar office and wave them around... http://www.emirates247.com/news/emirates/property-fees-must-be-paid-by-owners-rera-2014-03-18-1.542101 http://www.emirates247.com/news/emirates/dubai-tenants-can-file-lawsuits-if-services-discontinued-rera-2014-06-22-1.553750 Amazing! Perhaps you can negociate with Emaar whereby you pay the maintenance charge to get the parking key but they still bill the LL and when they are paid they refund you. The office wouldn't even tell us how much the LL owes - they say all the details are confidential and that it is against their policy to discuss details with the tenant!

Thanks for all your suggestions and help…. Yes, we've been to the office in the Greens and the two guys looked at us sympathetically but won't/ can't help us. In terms of renting a parking space, we just don't have the cash to spare. The car park is quite full at the moment too and I dread to think how much Emaar would charge for a second parking space. Our LL has taken way too much of our time already and there's really no point in stressing/ wasting any more energy. Guess we have no choice but to roll with it for 3 months and file this one under chicken s***.

If the LL doesn't live in the building or even the country, how do they even know they are being 'named and shamed'? Why would they even care? I also agree that if we were paying monthly cheques it would be different, we would at least have some leverage. Luckily we only have a relatively small amount of time left on our contract… but still I am 5 months pregnant and could do without the worry of how I am going to park and get in the flat every day for the next 3 months. Can Emaar not take a more aggressive approach towards home owners who have not paid service charges? How about threatening court earlier? Or imposing heavier fines sooner, to deter LL from playing the system? When we move out in 3 months the LL will pay the service charge so she can re-let the flat and there will be absolutely no consequences for her - the story continues for the next poor tenant who tries to renew their contract a year down the line… RERA have done a great job, but we're still a long way from being the desired 'smart city'...

Yes we are in contact with the LL and we have asked her to pay, but unfortunately our relationship with her is terrible - she's aggressive and abusive every time we try to talk to her. She does not live in the UAE so she won't care about naming and shaming. For her, this not about the money, she is very, very angry and bitter that we won the RERA case. Just before we lodged the case she actually threatened to stop paying service charge/ maintenance etc. She is using Emaar's service charge policy against us to make our lives difficult and ultimately bully us out of the apartment! Emaar need to change their policies so there are direct consequences for the LL not the tenant!

Thanks for the input Ladies! We went to see Emaar today and they can't and won't help us. They say this is between us and the LL and it is the LL denying us access to the building and not them. We're heading back to RERA tomorrow to the Execution Dept. to see if they can help. There's no way we would/ should pay service charge fee on behalf of the LL… It was stressful enough getting the couple of thousand Dirhams in court costs back from her after we won the case!

Have faith (and lots of patience!) and get in contact with RERA. After 5 months of battling with our landlord we finally won our case - today! It was stress and hassle and took 3 court appearances…. but SO worth it! Our landlord didn't give us the whole 90 days but we still had to lodge a dispute and no they would not reissue the contract automatically without a dispute registered and getting an official verdict by the judge. YES! I am from Bristol and it is a great place - small enough, but big enough. Bath is lovely but it's small, expensive and the tourists will drive you crazy! I recommend living in Clifton, Redland, Cotham, Henleaze, or Westbury on Trym. There are lots of good schools so it just depends what you're looking for - Most of my friends went to Clifton College, Bristol Grammar School, or Redland High School. Saying that there are some great new academy schools that have opened over the past few years.

Thanks ladies for all your advice, it's such a relief to have reassurance from you all. We'll take everything with us in triplicate (thanks weebles!) and keep our fingers crossed that the land department accept our cheques and reissue the contract. I'll be so, so happy if we don't have to file a case.

Our tenancy contract is up for renewal on the 30th March and we need to file a case with RERA. Our landlady gave us 7 weeks notice and wants to increase our rent by 30% - she's being very aggressive and actually told us the Dubai laws don't apply to her! Does anyone know how long we will have to wait for the hearing after we go down to RERA to file the case? The problem is that we go on holiday for a week early April and I don't want to be away a miss the hearing. Not sure whether to file the case just before we go or wait until we get back to Dubai. RERA said we can wait until we get back - but i feel uneasy about leaving the country with no one in the flat plus the last contract will have expired! Why don't you let her file the case especially as you are not at fault and she is breaking the law. She cannot evict you on these terms. I would send her all the relevant information regarding eviction notices, the rent calculator costs and your claim to stay. if she still does not agree then tell her she has to take it up with the rent committee. Most, if not all back down with this and it saves you money and time :-) I hope you changed the locks when you moved in Good Luck SL, do you have a link for eviction rules? Yes we sent her all the other info but she really doesn't seem to care about the rules and regulations - she seriously thinks that since it's her apartment she can do what she wants with it - It's like dealing with a stubborn child! We gave her 2 warnings that we're going to RERA and she slightly came down in rental price - but then told us if we only pay that much then she will not pay for service charge, cooling charges or any maintenance for the next year. We did change the locks….. but gave her a key! Think we're going to be changing them again tonight!!

Did you give notice that you wanted to stay? If not, do that as soon as possible. Then sit back and don't worry. As Sarahlou123 said, leave her to file a case if she wants you out then she pays the fees not you. Dont tell her are going away though. It is unlikely the case will come up so soon but the worst that can happen is that it is rescheduled because you are away. Scaralex, do you mean giving notice to the LL? No, we verbally told her but haven't officially 'given notice' . We asked RERA about this and they said this won't be a problem I might double check with RERA though as this slightly worries me!

And so it starts! They said they want to do things amicably and not go through RERA lol! These LLs are unbelievable! SL It's just started for us to too -we\re in the Greens and our LL is trying to put up our rent from 70,000 to 95,000!!! We're also expecting her to go the eviction route next…. I pay 75k and the rent calculator stipulates no increase so check yours too I am willing to come to a financial arrangement regarding renting a new apartment/moving costs. That will be the next email Yes they pay all your moving costs, make sure you get your full deposit back and anything else you can squeeze out of them ;) My friend negotiated the difference in rental costs to a new apartment as one beds in the Greens are now going for 100K! I don't want to get into a row with them but will go by the law if I have too Wow - 100K for a 1 bed!!? Who in there right mind would pay that? We're going to sit tight too - the rental calculator says she can put the rent up to 73,500 AED and we think that's fair ; ) One thing that worries me - If we fall out with the LL over this will she try and keep our deposit at the end when we vacate?

I went Paleo for a while and I know I should go back to it. I only ate proteins, vegetables, fruits and limited full fat dairy. Only 70% and more cacao based chocolate. No grains, no bread/pasta/rice. My skin looked amazing, I lost loads of weight, I had so much more energy and was much less tired and lethargic. If you eat pure foods, no processed stuff, much better. Hard to break the habit though. I love my chocolate milk, fruit yoghurt etc. I actually believe these products are addictive due to high sugar contents and for me difficult to stay off. But once you're weaned off lol don't feel like having it anymore. edited by Marroosh on 12/01/2014 Completely agree Marroosh - Paleo is brilliant and completely makes sense - really makes you think about how much of our food is processed. I found it really tough at the beginning, but really notice the difference now!

I'm pretty sure the Labour Law says you should get a certain number of working days off a year which translates into a month off when you add in the weekends. Look up the labour law on line and it will cover you even if holidays are not specified in your contract. Your employer sounds very mean spirited and sneaky :-( 22 days and 30 calendar days. Izzy, how many days off do you take if it's a week? 5 or 7

Mine works that I get 30 days, and out of that comes Public Holidays and Annual Leave. However no weekend day would be counted as a holiday day. You need to probably confirm a way forward. I presumed this is how it would be for me too - this is how my DH's company works! Lesson learnt - never presume!!

Is your holiday calender days? Or working days? Normally 30 days in calender days, so taking 14 days makes sense. If it's working days, then total annual holiday is usually 25 or so days as you discount the weekends. Sounds like they can't make up their minds. What does it state in your contract? Thanks for your response - that's the problem - It isn't covered in my contract, we just had an understanding and that's how it worked before! So would that mean National holidays come out of the 30 days too?

I really hope you lovely ladies can help me with this. I've been working for a very small company for almost a year now. My boss has just turned around and said in the future if I want to take 2 weeks of leave off in a row I have to take 14 days of my 30 days annual leave (i only work 5 days a week). In the past I have only taken 10 days holiday for 2 weeks. However, she then turned around and said if I want to take a week off then i only take the 5 days. Does anyone know where I stand with this? I tried calling up the MOL but they said I need to talk to the Lawyer who isn't in until tomorrow!

I was really happy about Dubai winning the Expo until just now - i just spoke to a guy on my way to work who lives in a labour camp in Al Quoz. His landlord came in this morning and said room rent has gone up (as of next month) from AED2,100 per month to AED 3,000. Crazy! Why not refer the poor guy to one of our Rera/Rent committee experts? This would be a cause worth supporting. Because he is probably sharing with too many....so he has no leg to stand on, yeah 6 to a room in this particular building - i'm pretty sure there are no contracts and definitely no laws protecting them!

I have been looking at jotun website where you can upload a photo and apply their paint colours. The thing is the colour shown look fairly different ie lighter when applied to the photo. I have a contractor who will get the paint for me but I'm a bit worried that without seeing the paint first it will be somewhat different to the one online. Any tips ? I would suggest you get a tester pot and try it out. What you see on the computer will be completely inaccurate as the paint colours on your screen will depend on your monitor settings / screen size / quality etc

In terms of selling and displaying paintings - you could try contacting Art Couture at Al Badia Golf Club. Also, there are display walls in some cafes, More Cafe [url=http://www.morecafe.co/UAE/EN/art.html'>link[/url'> are open to artist submissions. At Emirates Towers you can rent a display wall, although it's ridiculously expensive! Little Majilis might be worth a try too, for selling online. HTH
