We have now left Dubai but on reflection here is what i wish now; - i wish I had given the less lucky around me more, way more - my maid, our mechanic. only in retrospect do i now recognise my true fortune -i wish I had visited the world near and far more. Australia is so far away. - i wish I had put myself out more and tried harder with friendships and social groups - i wish we had gone to more Brunches - now I look back I can see what was wonderful and not so wonderful about our school- I am grateful that a couple of years without me needing to work meant we got to have another baby. Something that wouldn't have happened in Australia. - i know now how unfair the world can be - and am thankful that i was born with a western passport and english as a first language - i never realised the true value of this. This makes me sad. - i know now that life isn't to be lived in one place forever. so many amazing places, cultures and people to see - i also now appreciate that life can get too hectic and that some time at a slower pace, with less money and less certainty is OK

I've bought it at the pharmacy in the Spinneys Centre in Umm Suqeim and the one in the Park and Shop Centre in Safa. But I think it is fairly easy to find.

We lived very near a mosque for 2 years. I never got used to the noise. My kids could sleep through it though. Our Imam had a dreadful voice and he also used to cough and clear his throat into the microphone. It was gross. It never just blended into your life.

Our visa only took 5 weeks (but that was 3 years ago now). We have had 3 rentals in Dubai - all 3 different landlords accepted 4 cheques. Maybe we've been lucky.... If you need a short term rental I can recommend PK Properties who we used recently between houses while we decided what to do.

Research generally does not support holding back. There is no evidence that it improves academic performance in the long term. Focussing on weaknesses through support is more appropriate. That said if the issue for your child is general immaturity then this 'may' support holding back. Especially if you child is one of the youngest in the class. I would recommend you get an independent assessment of your child from an educational psychologist. They will be able to assess IQ and abilities/shortcomings across different areas. They will also identify weaknesses in things like working memory etc.

I can't help you with induction day but I think they will contact you closer to the time. Uniforms - I have heard rumours that the uniform is changing so I would wait a while yet. You can get second hand uniforms from the school but the shop is only open half an hour a week (run by a parent). I only buy second hand shorts now as they are very robust. I buy new shirts though. I buy 5 sets of uniforms because I am lazy.... For FS1 I bought 5 pairs of socks from Marks andSpencer as they are better quality than the Zaks ones. I found a small backpack most useful and the book bag useless. I always buy 2 hats. You will need 1 pair of black shoes and 1 pair of sports shoes. you also need 2 drawstring bags - swimming and PE. I get a white permanent marker and write their names really big on them so they can identify their stuff. You will need a pair of navy swim shorts and a towel (they prefer the ones with a hood where they poke their head through as it makes walking to the pool easier). I wouldn't go a bento box. 2 separate snack boxes is better. For FS1 they have a fruit only snack which goes in a separate place to second snack. You put the snacks in tubs at the door on arrival. I used a soft padded cooler bag in FS1 but by FS2 90% of kids use those small hard cooler boxes. you need a water bottle too. I had 2 sets of identical boxes/bottles with shaped name labels so my kids could pick out their own stuff.

I give my 8 month old Penne pasta with whatever sauce we're eating. He can pick it up in his hands and shovel it into his mouth. Most ends up on the floor but at this age food is for fun and learning about eating.

Not a current resident but did live there until 2 years ago. points 1 and 3 are true yes. when we were leaving they were being strict on this - it was a right pain. on point 2 - when we lived there is you had an international visitor staying with you they could get a temporary pass to the facilities for free (pool/beach and gym). Not sure if this has changed though. You will not be able to slip someone in ever. the guards on the pool are long termers and they know every resident!

We did this just this past summer. Not a full month - 2 weeks only. Same reason as you. In 2015 Ramadan will be the last 2 weeks so I would be less worried about the missing lessons. I don't know what it means that it's on their 'record' - not exactly something that anyone is likely to ask for any time soon.... It's in the school's interest to approve them as authorised as non authorised days count against them in their school ranking. I didn't ask as such - I told them what I was doing and they actually approved it after we'd left for the summer.

i have a Bee 3 (third and last child) and I am happy with it. I do use it as a travel system - but my 3 month old prefers to just be in the pram with the seat reclined.... There are a few on Dubizzle - which will be the older Bee Plus (the 3 only came out in Dubai about 2 weeks ago). You can upgrade by buying the new hood which fits (it is bigger which was really important for me). I had a Maclaren Techno XT for my second child. In some ways I preferred my Maclaren to my new Bee - but it doesn't take the capsule (my kids are many years apart so I had to buy everything again). If the Maclarens could take a capsule they would be my favourite choice and they are good value. But if you didn't need it to take the capsule I would not hesitate buying a Maclaren again.

Can I ask which school?I have never heard of young ones from Aus having a problem to british. my oldest swapped age 6 from end prep/reception/pre-orimary to the middle of year 1 and within a term had easily caught up...... my younger one started in british but his australian cousins are actually ahead in some areas... Especially with the new australian curriculum they should have no issues...

Do not let your Australian kids miss a year and a half of schooling! We had the same issue moving here when we came 3 years ago. My older son has just finished pre-primary in Western Australia and they wanted him to go into the middle of year 2 (he was 6.5). It would have destroyed him and he is quite bright. He is an August baby so one of the older ones in Australia but would have been the youngest in the class here in Dubai. We held him back and he missed the first term of year 1 only - went into year 1. He's the oldest in the class here. At the time our transfer certificate from Aus said 'H has successfully completed pre-primary and is promoted to year 1'. Never had any issues. The other consideration is that if you back to Australia your kids go back a year and a half. A friend of ours came over 2 years ago (July birthday) and he skipped a year and a half. He struggled for 2 years both academically and socially. He's just gone back to Aus having left year 7 (has done 7 weeks of secondary school) and goes back to term 4 in Year 5. It's not a miscommunication on the part of the school - it's a combination of different age cutoffs in the different years. If a child is 5 by September1 of the year - they start year 1 that September. So all year 1's are 5 on the first day of school. Whereas Australia starts later. My October child has no issues as he is in the correct year for both curriculum.

Hi Gingerbird Are you still looking for a maid? I know of a lovely Phillipino lady who has been here in Dubai for 2 years and is looking for a small family to work for as her Australian family had to return to Australia due to work. She is as loyal and trustworthy as you will find. She speaks, reads and writes english. She has 3 children of her own - the oldest who is at university - hence why she is working here in Dubai. If you are interested post here and I will post my details temporarily. Cheers

My advice is to take them yourself and then take them to the photo shop to get printed. They are a nightmare! It took me 2 days to get my 3 week old to look forwards, not scream, eyes open etc etc.....I tried after every feed when he was calm and relaxed but it was very hard. I took the photo on a white blanket with a rolled up towel under it to keep his face pointing forward. I can't imagine the stress of trying to do it in a studio. UK doesn't require eyes open but Australia does - not sure on other country requirements.

Also - with Australia and UK - you do not apply for dual citizenship! Neither country cares if you hold another country's nationality - you can hold as many as you are entitled to. So you just apply for both (and obviously pay the associated fees twice). This is not true for all countries - there are many that do not allow dual citizenship.

No idea about having a baby in UAE or UK - had all mine in Australia (recently 1 over summer)... I am not sure why the UAE has any say as to the nationality of your baby..... My baby and my other kids have both Australian and British passports. A passport from the UK and Australia (and hence citizenship) is between you and the respective governments and based on the nationality of the parents. Neither the UK or Australia make any distinction between the mother or father - if one parent was born in that country and is therefore a citizen by birth the child has an automatic right to citizenship by descent. Your first child by their birth right is an Australian citizen by descent and can apply for an Australian passport should they want to! Only thing to be mindful of is that if your baby never lives in the UK and then has a baby in another country, that baby (your future grandchild) won't have a claim to British citizenship. As descent only goes one generation. This is the same for both the UK and Australia. My children who were born in Australia are British by descent (Australian by birth) and hence their children would not have an automatic claim to british citizenship, unless my kids at some stage choose to live in the UK for at least 3 years. We have never registered the kids births with the UK embassy or government. We just filled out the forms for a passport online and submitted the documents (including my husbands UK birth certificate). One plus on the Aussie side is that you can get a passport in a week...we're still waiting for the UK one over a month later! My older kids have their British passports already. The only issue in the UAE would arise in the case of a father from an arab country - ie. when the child attended school if the father is arab they have to do arabic studies and are considered muslim. Which wouldn't be the case when both parents are not arabs or muslims.

The bubblegum seat is ILLEGAL to use in Australia and the fines are huge if you get caught. It does not meet the australian standard for car seats. EU and USA standard seats are not legal in Australia. Your 3 year old must be in a 5 point harnessed seat with an australian standards sticker. Hence must be purchased IN Australia. You can get a basic one for about $120 at toysrus. your 4 year old must be in a full booster with an australian standards sticker. Also must be purchased in Australia. This is the cheapest one available http://infasecure.com.au/category/car-safety/car-safety/booster-seats/versatile-folding-booster/ It costs about $50 from toysrus You can use these in dubai. Or you could hire from car rental company or a baby hire place.

I am on my third pregnancy and I am a big fan of the massage! I am happy to have a massage from any place that is just for shoulders and neck. I just lie on my side. For rest of body - I seek out a specialist massage therapist. My physiotherapist has given me the names of 2 ladies who are specialists in pregnancy massage here in Dubai. A massage from the physiotherapist is not a 'real' massage - they will only generally focus on areas of issue, rather than hour of removing the knots from your shoulders (which is what i am after).

As Big Blue has said - there is no compulsion for vaccination to bring a baby to Dubai. We will be bring our new baby home to Dubai as soon as we get a passport (under 2 weeks in Australia apparently). It won't have had any vaccinations at all...I won't be doing BCG and we will probably follow a hybrid Australian/British schedule. The UAE is UN declared 'polio free' but obviously most countries include polio on their standard schedules.

this thread is making me so glad our visas are in our Australian passports and not our British ones! I think our passports are kinda valuable and you can get them renewed in Dubai or Abu Dhabi in 10 days. We will be getting a new baby passport over Summer (in Australia) and with a little extra fee it can be done in 24 hours. I will have to remember to keep an eye on the expiries on the british ones and sort it while we're on holidays over there some time....

I have an 8 year old and 5 year old and another on the way. Our routine for many years has been unchanged! We have done bath at 7.00 pm on the dot since they were under 12 months old. Dinner at 5.30 (maybe 5.45 if I am running late). Quiet activities until 7.00pm. I am intending on doing the baby bed routine between 6.30 and 7.00pm. Which will be bath, breastfeed, book and bed. Bathtime for the older 2 at 7.00pm. Clean teeth, get pjs on, read books and then to bed. The older one has lights out at 8.00 and reads to himself. The 5 year old gets his book and then lights are out by 7.30. I have never tolerated coming out at bedtime. When they were little (and not still in the cot) I had a gate across the door and even from about 2 years we have had no dramas. I do the bedtime routine by myself most nights as the DH is rarely home. edited by australiajudy on 19/05/2014

I'd be taking what I could. Furniture (and everything) is expensive in Australia. Just have a look at ikea.com.au vs ikea in the ME and do a comparison of what stuff costs. If we go back to Aus we will be stocking up on basic stuff we will need. Just making sure it looks second hand or you will have to pay import duties. do be careful of food, dirt etc. I wouldn't take my trampoline etc. (although ours here is destroyed due to the summer heat). You can get very cheap, nasty furniture in Aus (like the fantastic furniture link below) but the more middle of the road stuff (freedom, harvey norman etc) will be more expensive than in Dubai.

Our company will either pay per month in salary or if you request - will pay it upfront in one go and then not pay it in salary. They don't write the cheque to the landlord - they just pay the allowance in one hit upfront. I am not sure this applies to all employees but my DH is pretty senior so they can quite accommodating sometimes. The contract just contains a number per month - no mention of how it is paid. The amount does not cover the rent 100% for us.

I would recommend this company to anyone. I had had a very bad experience with an apartment booked through trip advisor previously so this time I was very happy with the service.

It depends what sort of lifestyle and outcomes you are seeking by moving to Dubai... We come from a nice house and free high quality education and healthcare in Australia so for us the bar was obviously higher. no way on earth would we have moved for 14000 a month. As a comparison we spend the following (2 school ages kids): Rent - 240k a year (10% upfront in deposit and real estate fees) School - 40k x2 (at a GEMS UK curriculum school - which is a pretty mid range compared to the new ones opening now) Phone, TV & Internet - 600 per month plus my mobile which costs about 150 per month. DH paid by company. Utilities (DEWA) - 1000 per month housing fee plus between 400 (winter) and 1000 (summer) per month for water and electricity usage Food - at least 600 per week (family of 4) Vehicles - about 2000 x 2 - although we own both our cars outright now The only after school activity my kids do is swimming lessons (which cost about 65 per child per week). This is before the cost of medical insurance which is covered by the company. Also the company flies us home once a year - which to us is worth about 25k minimum.
