For me, it's actually a class issue. Upper class people treat everyone that works for them with respect and lower class people don't. I doubt very much that there are any upper class expats in the UAE. I don't agree with that - I've met many people I would consider upper class. I also don't agree with that! We have many friends from my country here who are definitely upper class.

I don't think the problem is about treating your maid equally. Or western families treating maids better and spoiling them. It's about maid personality and cultural difference. They were brought up in poor conditions, once they step in your home and see the luxury you r living in, they start to compare and most of them if well treated by their employers they start taking advantage. I think There must be border lines and firmness. For example: My mum, a middle eastern ( Arab &non gcc) for the last 15 years has been using domestic help. She treats maids equally. She would sit and eat breakfast, lunch together. Even watch tv together. She pays good salaries and would try to help them out if one is getting married( she would buy her a lot of households, etc...) Maids wouldn't work more than 7hrs a day. Maids would take all vacations off and a lot of benefits. When I see her with any maid I feel they are friends. Not an employer and employee. The outcome, mum has been stolen by most of the maids. All of them taking advantage on her. Mummy believes we are all equal even if a maid and doesn't like to put boundaries. She ends up firing them when she discovers theft, and start looking for a new one to spoil :) Exactly the same happened to my mum now that she is older….over and over again……!

I do believe we are all equal…..but roles in society make us different but this can't be an excuse to treat or discriminate anyone. I do depend on my maid, a lot!! But if she decides to leave or I decided to finish her contract for any reason Ill look for another one. I have friends (western) who sit with their maids and have a glass of vino or invite them to be part of parties, sorry but this for me is a no…..if I do that who will be helping me with my guests? I think if i do this ill be sending her wrong messages , we have a employer /employee relation we do respect her and also expect the same form her.

Suddenly, maids are making demands on their working conditions, hours, benefits etc. Maids (and other workers) come from very poor circumstances otherwise they would not be working as maids/labourers abroad. Unfortunately, I think many western people have made the mistake of treating them as equals. Neither this society nor the society from which the maids/labourers come is an equal society and making them think that they are suddenly equal to their "Madames" is silly and not good for them or for us. It gives them false expectations and makes it very difficult for those of us who do not live a western lifestyle and treat our household help as just that - "maids", "drivers" etc. Wait a second, are you saying that because someone is poor they are not equal to you? Am I not equal to you because I drive a Toyota and not a Mercedes? I think this is more to do with taste rather than equality…...

good morning ladies is there any charity center inside Dubai giving English courses for free for needed family ? Why would anyone offer this for free? Because there are people who can't afford it but do need to be sufficient enough in the language to be able to live and work here, and because there are plenty of people in the UAE who have very big hearts and are happy to help people in need. Well said!

My husband dropped and picked us outside the Ibis hotel, very easy. I was a bit cold inside , my DD was fine as she was clapping, sining ! but better if you take a card for you and kids. Only food outlet open was the pizza one. I did take some snacks for the kids. I think sound was fine but anyway could hear properly the dialogues as family behind us kept chatting , shouting to kids who were misbehaving…some people has 0 manners in this world. Overall it was fantastic show for the little ones…..

JPS doesn't have a very good DU ( in my opinion) one of my kids was there for a short period o time, what a waste of money a precious time on the learning. they "screen" children for dyslexia but the screening is conducted for somebody who is NOT and EP( at least at the time my kid was a student in this school). They got the wrong diagnose for my kid and I know at least of two more families in the same situation.

My daughter is diagnoses with dyslexia, she is getting support at school. But she feels too pressured to do lots of homework. She asked me she needs help at home with homework as she don't understand what she has to do!!! How other parents are dealing with children and teachers?? Which school your DD goes to? Hello my DS was diagnosed at his previous school as a borderline dyslexic. it was a very stressfull year as the school put a lot of pressure on my son to learnt same way other non dyslexic children did. He goes to a different school now, more relax and we, after a proper assesment with an educational psychologist found out he is not dyslexic only need extra support and different strategist to learn his spellings. He has a private teacher as English is not my first language and instead of helping I was creating more confusion. HTH

Sevenseconds please don't be too quick to think this, that or the other, far too many children are over diagnosed IMHO with all these sorts of issues when if fact they are just being children. The teacher can have a profound effect on the way a child performs and behaves in class. I have seen this over the years with my own children and dread each new year as to who we get, many teachers are very very average or at best dull. They plod through the curriculum and couldn't inspire a lettuce leaf let alone a bright 6 year old. Rather than having a problem it sounds from what you describe that your child may well be very bright (often confused by those who don't appreciate) and to be honest could just be bored stiff and not willing to conform to the monotonous boredom and slow pace of school. Great for her, this should be enhanced not squashed. I would be looking at having her iq tested and finding a school that appreciates and nurtures her rather than keeping in one that will destroy her. if you can look at foremarke school, the classes are very small and academically she will be challenged. I agree. My son has had notes passed from one year to the next and the new brilliant teacher couldn't believe it was the same child they were referring to. A lot of teachers like to pigeon hole kids and when they can't they call in the parents. Sometimes it can just be that the teacher needs to tweak his/her classroom management skills. Sit the child closer, maintain eye contact etc. sometimes you get a wishy washy teacher and they are useless and your child doesn't respond, just like adults! Eye Q omega fish oil supplements are fine and we gave them to our kids for a couple of years. There is nothing dangerous about them. Try and see Bakti at Dubai community health centre. I also agree. My son's teacher told usat the end of choll year 2012-2013t that she suspected my child was dyslexic. She was the same teacher the following year and keep on saying about the dyslexia. The school did a screening which came back telling he was borderline dysexic??? To make story short, we got a proper assesment back home and guest what? He is not dyslexic at all , only thing he needs is extra help with his spellings and grammar rules . I had a very stressful school year for absolutly no reason. Its not always the student sometimes is the teacher!

The PRO at DH's office is confusing us all. Hoping someone can shed some light on how we can get what he is requesting. We have a new maid and are in the middle of applying for her visa. When the maids previous family cancelled her visa, her ID card was also taken away and I gather cancelled. The PRO asked her to go to Emirates ID and get a copy of her old ID card (or just the details, PRO not terribly clear). She went along but was told she couldn't have this and that she should come back once she has her visa. The PRO has now, asked her to try the same thing again. It seems pointless sending her on another fruitless trip to the same place. Does anyone know how she can get this information/copy and why it is necessary? The PRO is generally very efficient but doesn't seem to 'do' explanations! DH is also,a man of few words and between them they are not making this very clear at all. What you need to do is Go to emirates ID center and request an ID certificate . It has all the relevant info about previous emirates ID. We applied first for emirates ID and then for residency visa but only finished the process of the ID (after several journeys to the typing centre) when I called the ID help line and the guy told me to request an ID certificate. HTH

So we've found a maid we want to employ but her last employer has sent her back to the Philippines. I really dont want to pay an agency thousands to bring her over as it's not like they've done anything to help me find her. Is it correct that she cannot come back into Dubai on a visit visa? We would then apply for her employment visa when she's here. I can't understand this at all -are Filipinos not allowed to come to Dubai on holiday? edited by onthemoveagain on 01/07/2013 WE "brought" our maid from the Philippines last month on a visit visa. What you need to do is: Does she has a relative here in Dubai who can sponsor her? if yes things are very aeasy. The realtive apply for a affidavit at the Philippino Embassy. After this , the realtive apply for a visit visa for her cousin, siter, niece in the Philiphines. Once the visa is granted she can travel here and once here you can change her visit visa to emplyoiment visa( have to leave the country to do this) we sent our to Oman. an after employment visa to residence visa. We left Star and moved to another school and couldn't be more thrilled with the decision. Any post I write about the negatives of this school get deleted in seconds (as does anyone else that writes anything less than flattering) so there's no point anymore. You'll be hard pressed to find a negative comment about this school (and a few others, namely one beginning with R) as they get deleted. Good luck with your school search. If the school was bad then you would see it all over EW. Since nothing has been written then it means its all smooth sailing. Trust me. These ladies will complain if something is not up to standard! Lol! That's not true though, I always thought threads get deleted if a school is complained about. But, I may have thought wrong :/ I remember last year when the swimming pool hadn't yet opened at Star and there was a thread on the matter which got deleted. There's a few things I could say about Star, but it's negative ( there's positives too) ,but there's no point, if it's going to get deleted....I just tell people if they ask me what my experience is with the school. In all fairness to the school, it's about the individual child, and whether the school suits that child.... Please, could you share your experience at start! (Umm sequim branch?)
