Also even if you calculate monthly cost of living most of the major expenses are payable in adavance therefore draining a huge amount from your savings: school fees and rent.

Sorry to sau but this salary is not enough to pay for school fees and daycare fees which are almost as expensive as schools. You will not be able to find part time and your calculations don't seem to include the moving costs. Also consider community fees and help at home. Most family here have a live in maid as cleaners would cost almost same price if you want them more then once a week. Food is very expensice ans most of all rent. You will not be happy here with so little, epsecially then living costs increase continuously...

It's very difficult depending on which type of job. i have been working for about 3 years now for 2 employers. I work full time but I start early and leave early to pick up kids from school. i constantly run and always wonder how long I 'll last. I have my parents who come here but since I'm from Canada, I think this year is their last trip soon they won't be able to come it's too far. They come once a year, I combine my holidays with school ones but which employers gives over 3 months off? Cant count on other family members to bbsit either...And my kids dont like summer camp. So my best advice is to stay home, wirk from home if you can. Your child is very young to be full time with a stranger. Try a nanny now and if you are happy at home With her and trust her later you can go back to work with peace of mind. Personnally I don't like to leave them at home all day with the nanny because it becomes limited what they can do.

Hi. I need advise on how to go about hiring a live out maid/nanny. As well as the costs involved? Tia Best way is to post an add on expatwoman or dubizzle or other. Speak to them on phone first to get a first opinion and get references before interviewing them so you don't waste your time. Always be very specific about everything: slary, holiday, cleaning ,cooking, children and pets. I specifically said to my new maid no loans. Don't go for an agent they will steal your $$$.

There are many lebanese/palestinian butchers who will bring meat, kebabs chicken and many other cuts for you, will barbeque it for you for very good prices. This way you don't have to sweat over the bbq while your guests are enjoying the pool!! I don't have specific names but my friend used them once recently and it was so much easier. Also Union Coop has bulk size. Forget spinneys it's a rip off.

Don't go there, I had the worst cut last time. Their staff keeps coming and leaving. It's a revolving door. i would try a well known Dubai salon instead of an expat palce where all staff is on a short term contracts.

I was really disappointed this year with the Halloween etiquette of many of the children yesterday. The worst groups were those with their nannies or unsupervised. Many would ring the doorbell repetitively or bang on the door impatiently. They would not even say trick or treat or any other greeting, just hold out their plastic bags or dig into the candy bowl, some rather rudely demanded I give them candy. Some children even visited two or three times thinking I would not remember them. I opened the door for one group of 4 children and they went into the bowl with both hands and literally emptied the bowl so that their weren't any sweets left for the fourth child. They don't listen when you tell them one each. I was left to ration out all the sweets in the end. I spent 400 dhs on candy and it finished in the first hour!! I had to send the driver to buy more lollypops. I was very disheartened that most of the children didn't even say thank you. Last year the children who visited were more polite. Additionally there was a flier stating the trick or treat times of the community were between 6-8pm yet at 10.30pm children were still ringing the bell despite the lights being off. When I told them we were out of candy they requested money instead. Exactly same here, although I didn't enforce the rule of 1 each, we were inundated by groups of 20 + coming from other parts of the ranches (not sure why???)and even granparents were asking my maid for sweets (!) so by 6:30pm we ran out!! Also spent 400dhs and I noticed by 7 most houses were out of sweets, and I keep starting this earlier and earlier every year!

Hello, We're new to Dubai (8 weeks and counting). My sons (twins, 4yo) are starting school at Repton in September. School times are until 2.20pm, and my husband and I will be working full time, so there is a gap between their finishing school and our finishing work. I've been looking into childcare options and as far as I can tell we are stuck. Repton doesn't let FS2 children take the school bus - so they can't be brought home. They're not allowed to stay for after school clubs (too young apparently). And nurseries with after school care have the same transport issue as bringing them home. We're still new to Dubai so this is all v confusing! What do other people in this situation do? Really grateful for any advice anyone has. Someone has told us that maybe the best idea is to get a maid and driver - does anyone have any experience of that? Thank you. Unforunately, there is no such thing in Dibai. If you are willing to leave your kids every day with a nanny or maid, then you'll have to trust her to do this. Dubai is just not organised for working mums and especially repton as they expect the parent to do the teaching at home and are constantly asking for parents involvement. I have tried to work full time and gave up. Now I'm part time 5 days a week but it's very hard with all the school holidays and i constantly have to miss work for school parents meetings, assemblies, shows, mertings. Thankfully I am part time but I'm an exception. Sorry to be negative but it's my conclusion after living here for 7 years. Better to know now then later. Also do you want a stranger to drive your kids everyday? It's easy to delegate here true, but how much of a parent responsability can you delegate?

Yes it really is. It's about the atmosphere you children would grow up in and the kind of people you want them to grow up into. NAS is such a nicer place and is academically superior. Your call though, NAS isn't cheap. Ok thanks for the reply, but I heard academics in junior school are not at all as good, that some parents weren't happy with them. Also I heard first families registering were not selected via entrance exam so you have a wide range of abilities and some kids who don't even have a good base in English. Is this true?

Looking at this M&S one on the EW website, looks pretty good but never done it before. As anyone been to a multisports, or just a 1 sport camp where your kids really improved and learned a new sport? This is what I am looking for this year as my kids are older and I need something a bit more focused on skills rather then a general babysitting exercise! (cannot believe the year is almost finished and I am actuallly posting about this...)

It depends on what is the job you have at school. Admin staff don't get all school holidays and not all school will give discount for school fees believe it or not. Also, not all school hire mums in admin function, but rather hire "low cost staff" from a separate company if you see what I mean...

have any of you tried the Ballaro brunch at the Conrad Hotel? What did you think? How is the hotel? I believe it's new but I've never been. It's also reasonably priced. Any feedback is appreciated! I tried the Ballaro brunch this weekend just gone! It was excellent, but not for kids - it was 100% adults. According to Time Out it attracts a varied crows of families and couple. They don't charge for kids less then 6 so it's quite tempting! I say it's just a matter of time before you see families with young kids there...

Hi, does anyone know what the official status is if your maid does not wish to renew her contract what end of service entitlement does she have? There is no unlimited or limited contract clause/status...this is for contract under UAE Labour law and hers is not covered by Labour Laws. Check your contract, it is actually covered by a different government body and their phone number is 800 5111 . Is your maid asking for an unreasonable amount?

Dear all, if anyone has any feedback on the above and if they have been there as a large group I would appreciate your comments. It's for a birthday party for 20ish people. Can you rate their service and food? The place looks gorgeous and I really like the view on the creek and golf, plus entertainment seems nice. I am wondering though also if it is feasible if we eat inside as it will be end of the month on a Friday evening so will be hot. This is my latest idea for my DH 40th party. I thought of surprising him for a dinner in the restaurant with friends and family. What do you think? Any feedback will be very valuable!

A lot has been said down here that's helpful already, but just wanted to add...Don't let her or yourself manipulate you just because your daughter likes her. This is the usual thing... they will do everything for your kids to be very attached and then they will turn around and ask a huge bonus/raise/emergency money or what have you. She has not been working too long for you so surely your daughter will survive if she leaves....Kids are surprisingly adaptable... My maid has been with me for 6 years and I felt guilty for the kids to let her go. Now that she is gone they merely mention her and they say I am doing everything "100 stars" for them (and they help more around the house)... Also, be aware we have received a leaflet in the ranches about employing illegal maids and random checks to be made in the community this week, so this is not a distant story in the newspaper...Also be very careful when you say you treat her like family.... it is a mistake, no matter how long they work for you, never forget she is an employee, she is not your friend... edited by oreo on 29/04/2014

Good on him. The sooner they bring in end of service gratuity for all workers, including these girls who are amongst the lowest paid and most vulnerable to abuse, the better. Gopies, It's not that we don't agree with paying a gratuity, it's the way we are being pushed and harassed and manipulated to do so at the last minute. Agreed, these maids contracts are **** and they are underpaid and easily abused. But at the end of the day, this is the going rate for a maid everywhere in UAE and it is up to employer to add whatever they deem is sufficient. Wouldn't it make more sense if these payments were accrued on a monthly basis with a calculation method specifed in the contract so that it is a contractual obligation everybody can agree on. It would be even better if a mecanism would be in place to deport/name/blame any maid who is harrassing and claiming money all the time from their otherwise honest, hardworking, well behaved employers. Just like the case of Beachbum below, isn't this completely unacceptable to be chased like this? Would you see this back in your home country? Beachbum, can't you tell her you'll complain to the police if she doesn't stop?? Agreed it is a payment towards charity, but it does not have to be this way...

Hi all, my husband decided to pay her. Oh well I guess it's his decision at the end of the day, it's his money after all. I am trying to justify it by saying she hadn't had a raise for a while, that these contract for maids are rubbish, that she never received a bonus. What else can I do?? The laws, here, proposed or enforced are putting a lot of pressure on employers. It is what it is. She pleaded and cried to get it and said god was the last judge. Well that's right... One day I'll find a job, part or full time to pay for all these stupid expenses, and one better day, I'll move back home where I don't have these stupid expenses!!! I mean I don't pay income tax, maybe this is a goodbye tax?? ............. and people wonder why the maids are so demanding these days! I wonder if I get a raise and a bonus when I go to my boss and cry and plead and bring god into the equation??? OH DEAR edited by starfishalicja on 06/03/2014 Exactly!! And it's not like we did not give her anything. We had already paid her 3 months, plus 500 dhs for moving expenses, plus a gift, plus a dinner with us in a very posh restaurant (for her...). In which job please tell me do you leave with 6 months salary, pocket money and a gift nowadays!?!?!? She said she had a lot of family obligations.. and what about my family obligations?? I know a lot of people in my family who'd be happy to receive this!

I just called the DRFA and they say they are entitled to 1 month and 1 flight back home. She is arguing that her friends, swearing on the skies above, received a gratuity and she is showing me a portion of a 7 days article that states UAE labour laws passed to pay gratuity to maids...I can't find the article, but found an old one from the National from 2012 stating similar headlines, but saying the laws are approved but "not enforced " yet. Anyway, it's a shame I have to spend last day with her researching laws about this when I am already giving her above and beyond what she is entitled to and I have always been so generous to her with one paid flight every year when she is not even entitled to it....

HI Mara, No I don't think it will cost me my marriage!! I am willing to give her whatever she is entitled to but I don't like the way she asks at the last minute. she says she is shy to asks but I told her it's worst to ask last minute! I absolutely don't want to end this in this way, and we have already been very generous. I just want to know what the requirement is as she is showing me parts of 7Days article stating this. According to this i would have to pay thousands of dirhams to her by tomorrow which I find unreasonable. Thank you all for your feedback, I greatly appreciate! Oreo

Hi MincePie, Dukan diet is not bad for you, besides, who says you have to follow the diet to the letter!?? You should first read the book, this will help you understand why the diet is what it is. I did it and would say it was very suitable for me and still is. You don't cut on fruits forever, just in the first phase and then you can go back to eat normally after you've reached your goal. I would also suggest you do the online survey as it will help you know your targets much better. When I did the diet I was still drinking a glass of orange juice in the morning (the fresh one) even in the first phase. I also did eat a little bit of carb but never in the evening/dining time. If you are used to eat middle eastern food, this would be more difficult though, as there are a lot of dishes with rice, pulses, and dough. Grilled meat, chicken and fish are really the staple of this diet. There is no last year/this year diet, The only good diet is the one that helps you change your eating habit for life!! Most medical research bodies would disagree, the Dukan comes with issues and as you quite correctly state there is no this year /last year diet (I was being facetious!). Healthy eating cutting down calories and increasing exercise is the only long term way of reducing weight. This link my help the OP with there quest; http://www.nhs.uk/news/2011/11November/Pages/dukan-diet-celebrity-diets-unproven-dangerous.aspx OK, lolacat. Any diet has risks and when I say getting better eating habit for life means same as what you say about healthy eating for life. What is the 2/5 diet anyway and how is it better then any other diet?? Besides, the diet you are doing is personal and whatever works for you long term is what you should be doing...

LalaLayla, You are right to worry and wonder what this guy is up to. I have lived here for 6 years now and I have heard and witnessed all kinds of weird behaviors from all nationalities. Not because they say crime is low you shouldn't be careful actually quite the contrary. Just the other day I was in Safa park , on Thursday afternoon, meeting a friend after school. Kids were playing with with a ball and a men approached them and asked if they were fighting and was insisting in his enquiry enough for my 5 yo to runaway from him. All this as we were looking about 10 metres away and he left when we asked him what his problem was and what the heck he wanted...
