On the side of the law?? "On 25th Dec 2002, the Ministry of Interior issued a circular notifying all residents of the UAE that retention of the passports of the employees by the employers is considered to be illegal and is punishable by law. Further, UAE has ratified the convention against forced labour of the ILO (International Labour Organisation) which is also against the retention of passports as it is considered to be a form of forced labour. According to the ILO all workers have the freedom and right to enter into and leave their employment without any coercion against the same i.e. there should be no threat of being penalized for doing the same. By retaining the passport, the position of the PG 2 employee becomes vulnerable and is thus coerced to work for the employer even against his wishes and thus retention of passport may be used as a method of inducing forced labour which according to the Article 34 of constitution is not allowed and thus unconstitutional." A quick google brings these and LOTS more. http://www.guide2dubai.com/living/laws-and-regulations/passport-retention-rules http://www.thenational.ae/business/personal-finance/uae-employers-not-allowed-to-keep-in-custody-passport-of-workers http://www.emirates247.com/news/emirates/what-to-do-when-employer-insists-on-retaining-passport-2015-10-27-1.608248

Perhaps they should've tarted it up before renaming it. With that I don't mean the endless filthy cards that are constantly distributed and littered around. It's a depressing looking area with no trees and greenery. From what I heard it's full of bachelor's shared accommodation and not a family friendly area.

It depends on the size of the company. By the end of June this year [b'>all [/b'>companies [b'>have to[/b'> insure their workers. Perhaps this particular company are delaying it until they really are obliged by law. http://gulfnews.com/news/uae/health/dubai-health-authority-to-fully-implement-mandatory-health-insurance-by-june-1.1713672 OP- You're a good person for being concerned. There is probably not much you can do than to avail of services of a company that treat their workers properly and follow the law.

Home is where I can feel safe and shut the door from the world outside. Home is where I can be myself and say what I feel. Home is the place(s) I have keys to. Back home doesn't exist any more, not in the same way it used to. Home will change to wherever I move, whenever I move. If it doesn't feel like home, I'll move again.

Good to know about the plastic bag! Thanks for letting us know. That's another reason for NOT going there then. I find it insulting to be "accused" of being a thief. It's bad enough with the stapling of shopping bags in Carre4 in MOE! Are there really THAT much theft and shoplifting here in Dubai? You would think that nobody would steal as you can can get sentenced to several months in prison! Here's just one story... http://gulfnews.com/news/uae/courts/dubai-airport-porters-jailed-for-stealing-chocolate-and-gum-1.1698829

I can recommend Beauty Within. I'm a regular customer. If you're quick and get appointments before the end of the month they have special offers. Massage is 99 AED, Mani&Pedi is 95 AED and Keratin is on offer too (you need to check what price as it depends on your hair length). You shouldn't do colour and keratin in one go though. Do the colour in a few weeks time instead.

Are his initials RA? If so, I've heard he's done the same trick to others too while living it large. Google him to do some more digging. It's a disgrace that somebody can keep on cheating people like that and get away with it. A stint in prison here should teach him a thing or two...

One question. Do you use wet wipes and flush them down the loo? They cause problems in Europe too. We had some minor problems in the last apartment but the flush was quite weak so I thought that was part of the issue. The toilets in the current apartment have a strong flush and so far we've had no problems. I'm not going to get into why I would never flush any type of wet wipe down the toilet, that's a total other issue. If you must do it though be aware that if there is anything inside the pipe that it can get stuck on, it will and then the whole pipe will back up!!! Here's a good article about it: http://www.theguardian.com/sustainable-business/2015/may/26/disposable-wipes-sewer-toilet-cities-flushable

I also feel my English has gone down the pan here. I've had to simplify the way I speak and I tend to automatically switch over to the simple language if the person I speak to do so too. It gets a bit tricky in a group with various levels of English. I find it hilarious that even hubby uses the word "backside" now frequently. :-D

Most locally hired interns may not receive a monthly salary or allowance however they live with their parents and probably get pocket money/allowance from their parents It would be very difficult for an ex pat to may AED500 last a month, that is unless they have another income coming in. Could anyone live on AED16 per day? You couldn't even get a short metro journey for that price. A short metro journey is 3 AED. I do agree with you though that 500 AED is almost impossible to live on here. What is the accommodation like? 12 in a room on bunk beds?

I can recommend Beauty Within in Dubai Marina. They have two hairdressers with a Finnish hairdresser degree (that is three years in college). They are very good with blonde hair and highlights and are Goldwell qualified. I find Goldwell is the best colour for blonde especially. I've been going there for over a year now and they fixed my butchered hair done by somebody that clearly wasn't properly qualified. Having highlights done there has taking several hours but at least it's done properly and not just a few foils. I have a long hair and lots of it but they take their time to do it well. Full head of highlights really means a full head there.

LOL The maid seem to be pretty good at having you on... You need to remember that it's an employer-employee relationship. You're the employer and you call the shots. I do hope you've been an employee too at some stage so that you remember the other side and rather than barking orders you can manage in an appropriate manner. Is it a communication issue? I'm just asking, not blaming.

You're not the only one unemployed and "extremely qualified for posts". I don't think it's necessary an "African thing". I know plenty of women of many different nationalities struggling/struggled to get a job here. As there aren't enough laws in place to protect workers so many employers really take advantage of the situation. There are so many sexist/racist/inappropriate job adverts here. The process of advertising/selecting/interviewing is the most unprofessional I have ever come across and I know many of you would agree with me for saying that. There is hope though. It's not all bad. You need to know the right places where to get jobs. A lot of time is down to luck and who you know. There is not much thinking "outside the box". It's a cliched phrase but a lot of jobs only go to candidates with the exact qualification and specific experience without considering candidates that have something a bit different but who would still be fully capable of doing a very good job. PS. There should only be ladies on this forum... :-)

I went a couple of times to Glady's Motor City Branch and, for a small neighborhood one, it offered pretty decent services, not great nor bad...just little below average...More than a year ago, at the end of November 2014, I went as usual, with my 3 years old DD for a haircut, I also had a haircut and eyebrows shaping and color. Her haircut was extremely bad...since that time I tried different salons and none of them could repair the damage...I have no idea how things could have gone sooo wrong, since then my DD hair lost its brightness..However, the thing which bothered me the most and made me stop going there was the way the staff handled the whole story..When I returned, after less than 3 weeks, as my kids were sick and my DH just had an ACL rupture just at the beginning of Dec 2014, I was told that I have to pay again 40 AED, the cost of her haircut...I leave tips of this amount, so the small amount I was being asked was not a big issue, but the fact that I felt ripped off, she was a 3 year old kid...and obviously I was not trying to get a service for free...Even when I talked with the manager over the phone, her major concern was to punish one of her employees instead of showing some customer service skills and try to fix my issue...Even if there was a time frame of which I was not aware of, come on, a small haircut for a 3 years old..Maybe there is a cultural gap, but from where I come from(EU) a situation like that would have been sorted out with apologies and another haircut... Oh, please. What kind of haircut makes the hair[b'> "lose its brightness"[/b'>? I've had several bad haircuts over the years but a bad haircut is a case of waiting for the hair to grow longer to have it cut again into the shape you actually wanted. Yes, my last bad haircut (very uneven layers all over the place) had me in tears but now after about a year I've gradually had it grown longer again and re-cut several times and all is good. I let them know I was very unhappy and that it was totally against my instructions. I paid up,left without tipping and never went back to the place (which was a place in Dubai Marina). Are you sure you are from "EU"? Something in your story makes me think you might be a competitor trying to drum up business for yourself? I might be wrong but why drag this up over 14 months later?

Yup if you. Had read Tessa's remarks, you would have known what I was referring to... And generalizations? Good heavens have you read this whole nutty thread? The woman asked a question and the holier than thous, one again jumped in with unwanted opions even to the point of saying that in the Uk piercing a child's ears were looked upon as less than. Not quite up there with the white people. I sure did not say that but it is no ones business what they do. Apparently some on here generalize a lot, so my. Comment just went. With the flow This is what I was referring to: ntirely for the parents but in UK they do tend to be associated with lower social economic groups or people from other cultures where it is the norm and are frowned upon by the white middle classes. Maybe the UAE having doctors doing the deed changes that perception a bit - in UK it is often poorly trained 'beauticians' and shop assistants - or sometimes a friend at sch OFGS No wonder this forum is dying on its "backside". What's wrong with having different opinions and expressing them? "Unwanted opinions"? Perhaps one should google their questions then and not post on a public forum? Isn't the whole point with having a forum is that you get different opinions and sides? I do have to say though that referring to "white people" is racist. How would you feel if somebody was referring to"brown people"?

Nordique, piercings done right will heal and last a lifetime. This is why it requires 100% good quality metal like gold which has fewer reactions. FD, nowhere did I state that you personally quoted the word gypsy. I wrote to make a point about this particular rant dusting itself off to make the rounds again. Putting words in another person's mouth indeed. Your post particularly on this thread was completely unhelpful and unfair to the OP. She didn't ask you how you felt about it, but here you are, telling her what should be done - according to you of course. Are the studs included in the price of the piercing? If it's just 250-300 AED I can't imagine that it would include at least 18 carat gold studs or proper silver? I know plenty of people who let their piercings heal so that they closed. If you don't put any studs/ear rings through them for years they should fully heal.

I was five when I had mine done. Bad decision! The piercings got inflamed and it was very painful. I still remember the enormous pain when having the piercings done. I also got exposed to nickel (cheap studs) and I've been allergic to nickel since that. It's not a nice thing to have. You would be surprised how many things contain nickel. Be careful with the piercings if you really must have them done. I left mine alone over 20 years ago and I'm not missing the piercings one bit. The goo that used to come out of the piercings was disgusting (this is years and years after having them done). https://www.allergyuk.org/skin-allergy/nickel-allergy PS. I don't see anything wrong with Fairy Dust's posts. She has been very helpful and her posts are usually informative.

So........looks like we can just sit back and wait for recruitment companies to do some shill advertising based on the posts here and on another thread. *YAWN* I want my ten minutes back. Do you think we are amateurs? Why so cynical? Yes, there is far too much blatant advertising on this forum BUT we do need to remember that there will still be plenty of newbies eager to ask for advise on their particular situation. I don't think the OP on this thread is an advertiser/part of an advertising campaign. The post doesn't look like the usual advertising post? Newbies might get scared away from this forum if this is what they get when asking some polite questions.

What's the point in "personalise the cards online".? You might as well just email or facebook a card rather than send it in the post then. It's so impersonal with a computer generated card. Borders have some nice cards, so do M&S but ah so pricey here. I do recall that there might be some handmade ones sold at the ARTE market. It's so much nicer with a handmade card with plenty of space to write your own message. I cannot stand the cards with already printed blah-blah messages.

It's pretty common to pay with credit cards here. We could not open a joint bank account and the bank would not give me an ATM card or bank card to my husband's account. They would give a credit card though so that's what I'm using most of the time. I don't like having much cash on me. It's easy enough to transfer online cash from the cheque account to the credit cards. Yes, credit cards. We both have two each but the second one is for emergency use only in case of getting robbed when travelling. What the banks should do is watch out for issuing multiple credit cards to customers who just keep on accumulating debt without paying it off properly. I don't know what sort of system they have in place here. It would be useful to have a centralised register of debt which should prevent a lot of debt tragedies here.

I feel safe, particularly when I avoid malls, beach clubs and other public places on the weekends. Good point! There seem to be quite a few thieves wandering around the malls now. I nearly got robbed trying on shoes in the Ibn Battuta mall. Luckily I noticed it just before the woman had her hand in my bag. I've also heard more stories recently about wallets getting nicked in malls. I think people (including me) have been feeling too safe, thinking this is a relatively crime free society. Remember that the press is heavily censored.

Tessa, as you have apparently "flaunted" your wealth and success too many seem to feel that they have every right to have a dig in a way or another. I think some were expecting to you to just take it and disappear quietly. Or even better, come back after months and tell that things weren't so rosy after all. I think you have a right to bite back if you want to. Don't worry, not all are like that. There are people here who don't strive to fit into the stereotypes.

There is only one way to eat fish and chips - out of newspaper! Unless you cook them yourself but I don't have a deep fat fryer and I needed something quick and warming. My husband put plates to warm in the Aga and I drive a bit too quickly to get them home whilst still warm - it's 11 miles. The warm plates mean the food stays warm whilst we eat but we put the paper on top. Tut-tut. Let's see how long it takes before you're picked on for "flaunting" your Aga... :-D

Well, Tessa's children are adults now so packed lunches and school runs would not be part of her "real Dubai". Why is it so difficult to understand that different people have different lives? Some people never even have children. There are plenty of women here who can actually spend their days how they please. Envy is a not a pleasant side to be showing. No wonder this forum is so quiet nowadays. Tessa- your thoughts are not controversial. It's very wise to do as much research as possible before "taking the plunge". Who knows, our paths might cross while walking around in wellies. :-) You seem to mention jealousy a lot are you sure you are not trying to convince yourself that you aren't jealous? I don't see the point of jealousy. Life is what you make of it. Life has different stages. I'm not even close to Tessa's stage yet. I might never get there, who knows. I was referring to to the nit picking of certain details. The multiple business class flights and the generous package seems to have hit a nerve with some... :-D Good Luck Tessa, whatever you end up doing.

Tessa- Don't mind them... This place is not representative of the broad spectrum of ex-pats in Dubai. As it's Saturday the sauce stocks are probably depleting/depleted. In regards to furniture, yes Ikea is cheap but there are also other cheap and cheerful options. Furniture is relatively cheap and here. Here are some options: Dubizzle and Second Hand Facebook groups (if you don't mind second hand) Home Store Pan Emirates (it's more of a comedy value but you might find the odd normal looking piece) United Furniture Pinky Furniture Lucky (in Sharjah) For house hold stuff: Ikea Home store Electronics: Sharaf DG in Times Square Carrefour in MOE Geant in Ibn Battuta Good quality bedding is expensive here. It might be worth it to get that in the UK. M&S in Festival City has a home section but it's more expensive. Did your husband's employer budget in a shipping allowance too? Good luck with the planning and decision making and please do let us know if you have further questions.

Tessa21- You sound like a nice and humble person person. You're probably too nice for Dubai. What you saw on your trip here is pretty much what this place is like. People are rated on what they look like, what designer gear they have, what their husband do, What cars they drive, how and where they live etc. It is possible to lead a more humble life here. It just takes a bit longer and requires more effort to find it. Yes, residents travel on the metro too. A lot of ex pats don't as they prefer to drive everywhere. Public transport would be "slumming it" you see... The sea can be quite filthy in places with stagnant water around the fronds on the palm. There can be quite a lot of jelly fish at times. The better hotels have nets. I've heard that Jumeriah Beach Hotel has nice albeit expensive beach club memberships. You might be better off getting a villa in Umm Suqeim, somewhere within walking distance to the beach. If you're used to live in a house the apartment living can be a bit claustrophobic and you have a lot more neighbours to put up with. There are plenty of cleaning companies where you can get a live-out maid as per your requirements. You can get somebody coming in daily, weekly or ad-hoc. The details you have given of the package sound very good. It's something that is out of reach of the majority here. Google "expat package dubai" and take a look at some of the links. That should give you some idea of the cost of living here. IF you need some guidance with financial services, pensions etc- whatever you do- be very very careful who you trust with your money. Do some proper research. The "financial advisers" of Dubai will be circling around you like sharks if they get a sniff of you. Please also be advised that there is no such thing as data protection here. Within days of getting a mobile number here you will most likely be SMS spammed and cold called. Dubai is what you make of it. With a healthy salary and benefit package you have a lot of opportunity to make it a nice experience. Courses, travel, exploring, taking up hobbies and so on.

There are plenty of good mid-range places too. If you went to the most expensive hairdressers back home you might not mind paying top dollar for it here. Quite often the hairdresser recommendations here on EW are: 1) Advertised on EW under the Beauty section 2) Friends of hairdressers or hairdressers themselves 3) More money than sense Personal recommendations from friends tend to be more trustworthy. Or when you see somebody with great hair, ask them where they go...

WOW. I haven't lived in the Netherlands so I wasn't aware that you have to close down everything (including bank accounts??). That is one of my safety nets in case things go pear shaped here in Dubai. Please do some research. If you're a Dutch citizen surely you can just go back? Have you got any savings? Any Dutch ladies on here that could advise? Go through your list of friends and family. Are they really all that condescending? Can't you try to reason with them? Do a bit of "crawling"? Surely there must be somebody with a heart? Your pride might take a bit of a hit but isn't that better than the current situation. As your husband has been doing multiple cheating it might be good to get yourself some tests done too.
