OUCH! Happened to me also. Cost me 750 though. But the emotional toll was tougher to deal with, for me at least. Another school charged a friend 1000 registration and 2500 for assessment! But he was accepted. It's terrible when they say the have spots left, when they actually don't!!!

hey tru blu, sorry to hear you went through depression with kids! Well done for pulling through!!! He has only been at nursery for 1 term, it could be that he's still new? I'll wait and see how it goes by the end of this term, and then decide whether to hold him back. But, if we decide to move to Australia in a couple of years, he would have 2 years of 'schooling' under his belt already (by Aus standards, he's due to start Kindy in Feb 2017!!!!) and maybe that will be a whole game changer? Back home, he'll be one of the older kids in the classroom! Everything would be the opposite of what it is here. his current nursery is a feeder into a major school here, so I'll accept that offer and stop torturing myself. I will also not do anymore assessments... I didn't realise how difficult the rejection would be. sheesh. I'm thinking of continuing him in the Montessori fs2... because it's child led, increases confidence etc. What say you? The other option is IB?

ha! I hope it's not about the passport! But I wouldn't be surprised if it were.... So frustrating! Or maybe they're making an extra buck off the registration fees/assessment fees? they tried putting us on for another 'assessment' in March. AS IF! Just to kick me when I'm already down? No, thanks! Besides, after I got over it, I have come to a huge realisation that it's definitely the school's loss! And i'm not just saying it coz he's my son, but because I have worked at a kindergarten for a few years and I'm looking at it through those lens. Have you looked into Raffles? what curriculum were you after?

WOW! I was about to start a thread about 'holding back a year' but so glad to see the helpful info already on this thread. I'm an Aussie and so glad to see other like-minded Australians. My son is July born in FS1 (Montessori) at the moment. I must say, he has only been to nursery for a term and a half now. Extremely bright, but he's shy. From my understanding,KHDA does not allow holding back a year - has anyone experienced otherwise? I'd love for him to be able to repeat a year! But I also have a December born who will be in one grade below him. If I hold the older one back, they'll be in the same class. My December born is super extroverted and confident. do you guys think it would be weird, both brothers in the same class? I agree that keeping back your child won't necessary make him a brain surgeon, but at this point, his self-confidence is most important for me. I just want to hear from other mums who went through the process and whether they were able to hold their child back or not? Or maybe his confidence levels will pick up by the end of the school year, (currently in term 2 and I've seen some change). But the system here pressurizes you so much, to the point where it won't allow me to wait and see what my child is like by June because enrolments are finalised around March in most schools. BLAH! Rant over. Over to you, my wise ladies...

Dubai International Academy doesn't assess children for FS. If you live in or close to Victory Heights, you could consider applying as it's 10 minutes away. Never understood assessing children this young. Stupidity. Just checked on their website - it says they do an assessment, I'll give them a call. They're quite close to us, it would be a good option actually. Thanks for that

The thing about VHPS - and other schools here in Dubai - is that the interview 100 students for every 10 places. So they only take the ones that are the most advanced - often born in September or October. I'm guessing your child was born in the summer or late spring? It really doesn't say much about your child at all - in any case, there are so many new schools opening this year, you will easily find him a place in a smaller classroom setting that will suit him better. He was born late July, yes, a very young one! And his introverted behaviour didn't help much :S I would love for him to stay back a year, but I'm not sure what the process is (maybe I'll put up a second thread). I think it would really help build his confidence... hmmm. Something to ponder. I shouldn't have trouble with my second one though. He's super loud and a December baby! :)

You know what? You just survived that school! If they are taking his shyness aginst him; then you don't need that school. The heck with them, just find another suitable school and forget about them, any school shouldn't really do that in the first place, they are using this assessment tool in wrong way, even special needs can't be turned away from any school, and they proof they aren't that much proffissional either. Keep looking for the best placement for your child, that will make him thrive... Trust me you don't need to even consider that school. Good luck and hug your wee man Great minds think alike Gorobattie! I was thinking that today - I don't think i'd want my son to be in that environment (I don't think). It does question their professionalism. I still remember back in school (I was a bit shy but no more haha) the louder kids got all the attention and even though I knew the answer to a question but I didn't answer loud enough, or whatever, I was ignored. I guess that's what I fear, as a mum, I don't want that for my child. you made me feel so much better. Hugs right back atcha, sista! :D

Hi LaDiDa00, You are right to feel upset, the system here is absurd to assess such small children in a new environment with new teachers and new kids, away from their parents. I went through the same thing you are going through last year when my July-born DD didn't do well in her FS1 assessments - she's one of the youngest, and she is very smart but extremely shy so she was too scared in her assessments and cried the whole time. I decided to send her to Little Gems nursery for FS1 which helped her get placement for FS2 in a Gems school - they took assessments at the nursery and based the placement on nursery reports, which is what I think ALL schools should do here anyways. It sounds like your child should have passed which must be more frustrating for you, but I honestly think most schools here take assessments even though they are full, just to make money off registration fees. I know so many friends who thought their kid passed the assessment but they later got a rejection, and they are now panicking. Do you have any other schools you could apply to? Some of the newer schools might still have places, like Kings Nad Al Sheba (though the new school's fees are very high so depends on your budget). Hang tight, don't worry, just keep trying something will work out! Thank you sourskittleashnut. Wow, FS1 assessment? Thankfully, my little one didn't have to do an FS1 assessment, he would have totally cried and clung on to me! Yes, I definitely think he should have passed! I used to work as admin at a kindergarten when I was doing my Bachelor's degree and I know he would be an asset to any school. I guess they won't believe me because I'm his mum. haha. Assessments to make money? I TOTALLY agree! I had to pay a registration fee AND an assessment fee... and now they're asking me to come back for a reassessment, not sure about that! We did a few activities today - and I wish I could send the school a video of it! (as you can tell, I've taken it quite personal!) NEVER going to these assessments again. I'm not competitive, I just believe in everyone having a fair go! He has been offered a place at Raffles, but getting there and back is quite a hike! I agree, fees are crazy high. Time will tell :)

hey ladeelay, we just got the negative outcome today and I cried! So you're not the only one. I cried because I was just so angry! my son is ahead academically, numbers,, alphabets, shape, colours, continents, days of the week, etc etc. he knows them all. BUT, he is shy in new surroundings, as most kids would be and that stopped him from doing all the activities. I wasn't given any reasons as to why it was declined, but I'm guessing that's what it was. On top of that, yours is a June baby, as is mine, so they're probably the youngest FS2s in the classroom. I would love for mine to repeat so he can build his confidence, i think being the youngest in the class, he is overshadowed by the older kids? I'm so upset, my husband doesn't understand why, I just am. Not because of anything else, just because how unfair the system is.

For FS2- really?! He is a young FS1 child, meaning he turns 4 almost towards the end of the school year. And he lacks confidence. It's my little one's first term at nursery, EVER! So we went to the assessment, my little one holds the assessor's hand and says bye to me (I was surprised, I expected him to stay and hold on to me!) 30 minutes later, they come out... He knows his shapes, colours,, numbers, recognised alphabets, but he was too shy to do the activities I guess.Well, yes, considering he's in an unfamiliar territory with people he has just met, wouldn't anyone be? So, he didn't make it! I cried. I actually cried. Am I being competitive? It killed my whole day! I really wanted this school for him to help build his self-esteem. Is this what it comes down to? 30 minutes - and you're out? They told me to come back for reassessment in a few months. I doubt much will change by then except spots will be filled. The big question for me is, is this what the schools are about? The loud, confident kids get all the attention and praise while the ones with low self esteem are left behind? I don't know what to do, i'm so over it now. So put off by the system. I really need advice. I want to help build his confidence levels, I want him to be loud and all, but... he is what he is. I just don't want him to be overshadowed by the big kids. I'm not going to toot my own horn, but he has never thrown a single tantrum! It's the school's loss, as I see it. Advice? Please?

Thanks so much for the input. I agree, the Volvo looks like a smoother ride but i'm so much more leaning towards the Tahoe. The Volvo looks like it will fly off the road if (god forbid) it's hit by a chunkier car Swisslady, which year is your Tahoe? Being able to start the car from 100m away is exactly what I need (forgot to mention it earlier!) Does the Tahoe cool down quite quickly? Thank you so much for the help swisslady, it really helps that you have experienced both.

We're looking at all three cars. we have 2 toddlers. I don't like the look of Volvo but it's supposed to be the safest car, and we need that on Dubai roads. The Tahoe looks way more sturdy to me and more spacious, which is why I prefer it. Mercedes - because it's Mercedes :)

I think the other thing the UAE gov't and media doesn't do is fear mongering and making the threat seem bigger than it is. I Agree, UAE has fantastic security measures in place so those A-holes get caught etc.

Here's something to bear in mind when applying. A friend applied to work with a large education group in Dubai (no names) and wanted to know the same as you're asking. She was told yes, but her son would have to be assessed before acceptance. She was given the impression that this was a formality. After signing a contract, she was told her son was not accepted for the school. Since this was the main reason for taking the job, she then wanted to pull out, only to be threatened with legal action for breaking a contract. Cheers for that. To be honest, the pay is probably peanuts, but if they help with housing and children fees, then I'd be interested I'll definitely keep a lookout for that and make sure all terms are included in the contract. Is she happy now? Were there any other issues after she started? What an awful way to begin a work relationship

To be honest if it is a local hire and non-teaching, unless senior leadership position, it will most likely cover nothing beyond your salary. Especially with a GEMS school. Local Hire positions in Dubai rarely include anything except salary, some may but not the norm. If you need/want more be sure to get it in writing. Good luck What do you mean 'local hire'? As in, Emirati hire?

Or can anyone recommend best services/alternatives near Mirdiff? Your neighbour? Love thy neighbour extends beyond borrowing brown sugar

No offense taken LaDida. I gave your post a thumbs up. It is an excellent rebuttal, and only serves to shed light on how truly complicated, unprecedented and tragic this current situation is. I vacillate between extreme emotions about this situation: 1.Empathy for the plight of the desperate, war torn countries and people. 2.European countries who simply cannot handle this onslaught. It really is a horrible situation. Thank you gardenlover. I am not sure the European countries are unable to handle the situation, where there is a will, there is a way. It is one of the richest continents in the world today! However, it shouldn't be a European issue, it's a global issue that needs to be addressed.

Having traveled internationally for over 20 years, as a passport holder of a "Prominent First World Country"... 1.I have had to apply for visas to many countries for entry before I was allowed to enter... 2.Been denied entry to countries because of my nationality... 3.Have to register my husband before he can visit my country...(ETA Anyone?) 4.He has to register me before I can visit his country...(ESTA Anyone?) 5.Have applied to enter several countries that required several visits to embassy's and submissions of many documents. I am an extremely grateful person, and do not take what I have for granted, but how do people think they can enter any country they want without visas and passports? You have answered your own question! You and I have prominent first world country passports. THEY do not. THEY cannot apply for a visa and get it because they have those third world useless passports that no one even acknowledges. There is no queue for them to line up at to get their visa stamps, it's all theoretical. You wanted to visit those countries for tourism or leisure, I assume? They do not, it's a matter of life and death. How did it feel to be denied because of your nationality? But at least you had a 'first world' country to go back to. food on the table, no one wanting to kill you, etc. We are the lucky ones, but no better than them. We are lucky we were born in a different part of the world. I am the child of migrants. I could have very easily been born in my parent's native country if they didn't move a year or two before I was born and who knows what fate would have in store for me. Gardenlover, please don't take it personally but I'm just speaking as honestly as I can.

Why is it so difficult to find any competent, professional tradespeople in this town? Trying to find a suitable company to renovate kitchens/bathrooms or even a half decent plumber/electrician? I reckon this could qualify as Hercules' 13th Labour. The guy with the Spinney's bag, the spanner and the dopey expression? These fools are everywhere, but it seems to be impossible to find anyone who actually knows what they're doing. Can anybody recommend a kitchen/bathroom company, perhaps an architect or designer and somebody who can repair leaky roofs in AR? (Jim Will Fix don't do roofs) I've had a c**p week all week so I have nothing positive to say. Except Why is so difficult to find competent ANYONE here... real estate agents! Landlords (yes, LLs)! I'm so ready to go home. I'm so over it. Getting into a freaking rental is so hard! My head is about to explode. here's to hoping for a better week next week RANT OVER.

LaDiDa I feel for you as I am going through something similar with my little girl who has just turned one :-( I still don't know if I am doing the right thing but I will give it a chance and see how things work out. Meanwhile I am worried she will be mentally scarred for life by this experience! At least it is distracting me from the horror of going back to work ;-) Good luck to you and your boy. Aww. It's tough isn't it? At least you have a reason to send yours (work). I'm a stay at home mum! I know there are some nurseries who have CCTV cameras and you can log in during the day to see how they're doing. I know it will be tough for the first few days. One mum told me that it won't be easy until the first month is over - waaaaah. Good luck to you also, work will help make the hours go by faster. Is your office close to her nursery? Nursery is close to home rather than work. When is your son's first day? I am leaving my daughter there on her own for the first time tomorrow. How did you go today, GiantPanda? Water works,I bet? Son's first day is Sunday

Your feelings are normal.......some find it a bit easier than others dealing with your first child's first day at school. That saying give them wings and set them free comes to mind. As you yourself say he seems to be quite ready but you aren't..........that's the issue. The best thing you can do for your LO is give him the tools to handle the world out there. I will be seeing my grandson off tomorrow for his first day at " Big School " , he is beside himself with excitement and has been wearing his backpack around for the last week. His mom can't wait, being the second child and after a LONG summer everyone needs the break ! Nomad, I think you hit it on the head. I'm definitely not ready to see them grow so fast. We didn't expect him to start so soon (if we were back in Australia, he would have started in January 2017!!!) So it was a huge slap in the face for him to start so soon as I wasn't expecting it. The more I speak to his teachers and school, the more comfortable I feel. He's my little best friend, especially in a foreign land and with a hubby flying out often for work, it gets tough.

I just got back from a visa run to Qatar last week! We flew flydubai Just me and my 3 year old and my 20 month old. They LOVED it, made it easy breezy. We took a flight to Doha (45 minutes). stamped out, took the lift to the second floor (didn't even leave the terminal). Checked in again. Went through immigration. hung out at the airport for a couple of hours (they loved watching the planes and running around) and we had coffee and cakes. Took the flight back and they were in bed by 8pm! Such a fun, day thing to do!

In a market where the landlord is king, you certainly have not been playing your cards. In my 20 years business dealings in the UAE, is if you miss a payment, email, or deadline, you are thrown out on your bum. You have been to lenient. Write this guy off and find a new tenant. He is playing you, because you are (letting) him. ...excuse the pun. In a market where the landlord is king, you certainly have not been playing your cards. Exactly!!! ^^^ I'm a little surprised you've found yourself in this situation. I've just finished house hunting and can honestly say it was an interesting experience. Landlords are protected from all sides. In any case, definitely try lawyering up. At least to write a letter.

I've had similar issues abroad. I would suggest you get a lawyer to write up a letter that you are taking legal action and your rights. it worked in my case, as soon as they received a letter with a lawyers letterhead and all, they immediately became better people. Try it and see if that works.

Yeah, I wouldn't leave my child/ren there. I respect other's decision to have nannies or let their kids play in soft play with some supervision, but it's just not for me. I can't leave my kids in some place like that. And I won't have a nanny. lol. The soft play that I was at was quite small - kids of all ages were mixed, they weren't separated by age. My son is 3 and quite a big boy (people think he's a 5 year old). MA. But, he's a gentle soul, and waits his turn, won't push in line etc. The others were constantly pushing and tugging (they were older, and it was okay for that age) but not for them to be in the same place as a 3 year old!!! It's not just the age, it's the nature of your child also.

Hi, does she have a facebook page? I'd love to see her work. I went to a hair salon the other day and now have choppy, blunt, ugly layers. In need of major damage control now! Try Ali at Slam near Ace hardware on SZR One of the best hairdressers in Dubai and always gets recommendations on here from ladies I would be loath to try a hairdresser that only one lady has recommended. I have known Ali as a hairdressers for 4 years and she is brilliant with all colours/lengths. She will sort you out as she has sorted a couple of my disasters out before. Very affordable too Too scared now. I trusted a friend who told me she goes to them and it's been 10 years bla bla, and my hair is stuffed :( I want to see their work now before I actually let them do anything :( Does Ali have a fb page or something? I even went to Toni and Guy, paid a ridiculous amount, and she couldn't do layers properly. Went to my hometown, paid a fraction of what Ipaid at toni and guy, and she knew EXACTLY what she was doing. There was one choppy layer, all the other salons were like, 'oh, it's fine, don't worry about it!' This one picked it up instantly. I'm waffling. I just want a trim, a little trim. Pretty please.

I've been to one of those and I was quite appalled. The place was small, the staff weren't doing a great job at supervising - half of them were daydreaming, the rest were chatting away. Their nannies were there though, even they were bored. Kids were running around like mad. I was the only parent at the place, the rest were bored nannies. I wouldn't leave my kids there at all, they'd definitely get trampled on. For what those soft play centres charge, wouldn't hurt to add a few more supervisors. After all, that's what they're advertising themselves as - we'll supervise your kids while you shop/have coffee. I paid 80dhs per child per hour It was my first time going to a soft play in Dubai - I'm fairly new here and it was the complete opposite of Australia.- and I was disappointed!

Mac is good But not for everyday use. People say it causes spots and blemishes. The mineral one isn't so heavy but the other ones they have get cakey and melt in the heat. I like to use dior (liquid foundation with loose powder on top) unfortunately it comes in a very small container and only lasts me two weeks. So I also buy maybelline or L'Oréal true match powder. Under it I use tinted sun protection. I have to change the colour a few times a year as I get darker and lighter each season. The sales ladies are not always helpful, sometimes they recommend colours clearly too dark or orange tinted for me. I agree not for everyday use! It does cause me to break out. But it's yet to melt off my face

Is that the thing that you stand on and has wheels, so it does the walking/running for you? hehe. Your house must be huge!!! Technology moves so fast, scares me! I don't even know how to use a TV anymore!

Hello Ladies, Was hoping you can give me some suggestions. I'm looking for good full coverage foundation that's not cakey on the face. If that's possible! What brand do you use that you can recommend? Don't mind spending a bit, but not an arm and a leg. Using a BB cream now but feel I've not been matched properly as I cover so the lady obviously could not see my neck. TIA! I always thought that the best way to test foundation was on the inside of ones' wrist? Livelytrish, stand in front of a mirror, now hold the inside of your wrist facing the mirror and compare it with the colour of your face. It's WAY lighter (well, mine is anyway). Especially since we live in ME and have so much sun exposure! I have different foundation shades for summer and winter (darker for the former and lighter for the latter).

oh, the girls at the counters know squat. so annoying. try it on, ask for a sample to take home and then see how you like it (as a previous poster pointed out) I use MAC and Estee Lauder. I've been using MAC for years now, I only use studio fix powder on its own for everyday use (pretty good coverage, even without the liquid foundation) I use the liquid foundation for special occasions, it's quite thick and has a very nice cover (can't use much as you will get a cakey effect). LOTS of compliments when I have studio fix alone on. super lightweight. Estee Lauder double coverage (I think that's what it's called) is AMAZING. It's thinner than MAC liquid foundation and goes on so nicely and the coverage is amazing. It doesn't give you the cake effect at all. I would recommend the MAC for special occasions and particularly evening wear and Estee Lauder for everyday wear.

Hi, does she have a facebook page? I'd love to see her work. I went to a hair salon the other day and now have choppy, blunt, ugly layers. In need of major damage control now!

Thanks Genkigirl, can you tell me how much it cost roughly? I went on their page but can't seem to find their photos from any springs. Most seem like apartments. Do you have the link? Thanks
