My Aussie hairdresser, Katie, has been working in Dubai for years (and I've been following her via various salons for the entire time I've been in Dubai). She currently works at De La Mer in Jumeirah, and is THE best cutter (and a great colourist too). Such great fun too. Always good for a goss. ;) She's also straight-talking, business-like, and loves her work. Despite all the offerings available -- nails/spa treatments/pool/etc -- getting a cut/colour here is NOT expensive. Can recommend the salon -- and Katie -- very highly. . Hi lady bee, didn't intend to login today but could not resist. Are you talking about Katie who was working for sometime in "Beauty Spot"? If so, you saved my life. I was wondering where did she disappeared from there. Needed her badly. She is such a nice person to talk to. Most of all, unlike other hairdresser, she dies spend 10-15 mins discussing clients needs and desires cut/color. P:s btw, link u posted has no information ☹️ YES! Beauty Spot Katie! And Roots Katie! And Robert what's-his-name from TECOM Katie! Sorry the link didn't work -- here's the info. The salon is at 783 Jumeirah Road. And their telephone number 04 328 2775 .... but if you have Katie's mobile, it's still working. ;) The parking isn't easy, but you CAN park 'in' the front of the salon (just check that you're not parking anyone else in first, I guess). Or there are side streets dotted around where you can find a spot too. First time I went, there was a marathon (or something) on in the area, so it was a bit of a nightmare, but you'll be okay. Thrilled I could help. Katie's the best, isn't she? :) She is not the best but good enough hair dresser. I am afraid I won't bellowing her if her rates are different than beauty spot ?

Sarahlou123 Not everyone has blond hair, many women have dark hair in Dubai. I know blond color is tricky so you are right in paying more to avoid disaster. I am talking about a normal color, a simple trim or a quick manicure. Why would someone pay double for this? If everyone was going as per recommendation only, these small salons will be out of business. Not everybody can pay this high price. One thing we are not paid "white or western package", secondly we are not blonds.

Why do I smell advertising in this thread? SLaM is an over rated salon in my opinion. It's just an other high end salon, ripping off client, spending on marketing/advertising and we are paying cost of that as well. Why do people just want to pay double for the similar service, just because Someone is more "talked about". When "Everyone" knows about something, that means their marketing is really doing good job. It is not possible, that all woman from EW go to same salon, and all are happy about the service. There are few like mine, who prefer to keep their mouth shut for some reason and don't brag about "accident" that happened at the same very "talked about" salon. I am just sick and tired of seeing posts saying, " you get what you pay for". This can not be implemented here. There are extremely expensive and bad salons in Jumeirah yet there are some good and economical salons in Deira or Bur Dubai also. I used to pay 150 Dhs for the haircut, my same hairdresser moved to some salon in Jumeirah. Suddenly her prices were up by double.... Why on earth I would pay double price to same person, for same service?

Thank You Suzy , I have thought if all these things my self. I Am not sure if it's that phase. I do take holidays a lot, travel 5-6 times a year. Yes , life is overwhelming, but I am sure it's not that bothers me. I only feel I am livig at wrong place within wrong ppl. Dubai has been really tough for me, specially when I am such a rebellious soul and this attitude always have me troubles. I might wait for few weeks. Already planned for 4 weeks holidays and traveling to few countries. I hope this weird feeling subside soon. Else, I anyway need to decide where we can move. Asti, I have travelled to many countries but know, being in some place for tourism is one thing, and living there could be entirely different thing. I am very much "human" and fair with others, it's the people and society I have problems with. Yes, there are laws.... You can fight it out, you don't live to fight everyday with every other company/individual/department? -I won my rental case against landlord, after battle of 2 years. He has taken all the money, refused to do the major repair work that needs to be done at my resident and that is pending for 1 year plus. RERA says, I have to open an other case. Seriously? Major repair is worth 15k. -I had to get refund of some of security deposits I have kept for visas in my company. they deducted almost 4000 calling it "admin charges". When I saw the check, made complaint, yelled at them, Showed them their receipts that says, no dedication at the time of refund. The Arabic cashier was mocking as if I have gone crazy???. Only then they returned 2000 Dhs more, still keep 2000 Dhs as "admin" charges. I had to fight to get my right. They might give another 2000 back, but I don't find energy to go through same energy draining process. -one of my employees came on employement visa. We finished her visa stamping, medical etc. After that, suddenly she went to India without informing. I went to file her absconding, I was told... It's not possible to make case against her, as she is out of country. Only that I can cancel her, if she remains out of UAE for 6 months. Few weeks later I was at immigration for some other work , I requested for status check of this absconding employee. To my shock she had Come one more time to Dubai after "disappearing", stayed here for a month and left again. Now again I have to wait for 6 months from her last exit. I have added my number in immigration system, so that if someone on my sponsorship exits from UAE, I will get sms. I never receive any message. I have up on them. -I had recently had problem with my centeral air conditioning. Called a company for help. When they came, I just asked them to examine the issue and let me know what the problem and solution is. They kept going to the rooftop, coming down and checking something in my apartment's ceiling... Then suddenly ac started working somewhat. The guy came down, handed my bill of 950 Dhs. Saying there were some compressors not working, gas refilling bla bla. They have fixed it and now here is the bill. I was speechless. I have made it very clear to them that they should check the problem and FIX it ONLY after my approval. Why don't these people listen? I don't believe even that was the issue. After 10 days I have same problem and the same company, same guys are not answering my calls. Yes, I can go to consumer rights..... for God's sake I am not born a warrior. Why do people lack ethics here? How do they sleep when they cheat on others like this? Businesses have no fear because law is on their side. Nobody can write bad things about businesses or departments.

You may want to consider places that are mostly close to your language, culture, and faith. Many countries welcome investors, and if this is the basis you are considering, you shall definitely succeed! Be ready for a lot of paperwork :) Good luck! Problem is, I belong to a very conservative culture. If you mean, culture and faith I believe in and not "I was born with"..... It can be any country where mostly the atheists or agnostic people live. I don't have too much investment, I checked few countries and they do welcome investors with certain amount of investment. I wish it is as easy, as it's written on their websit @SL I iwn one of the worst third world country passport. That is what kept me in UAE, thinking this is my only best option.

I have also been in Dubai for almost 7 years and in my time here, I have only had I think 3-4 haircuts. I would either get a haircut when I'm back home or simply grow my hair out. My last haircut was last year (please don't judge me  ) I am looking at booking slam due to all the positive feedback. However, I only would like a trim or a simple layered cut. I have long and very straight hair. Don't know if they only do edgy cuts. How's the waiting time, by the way? If it's just a trim, I won't recommend you go to them. Trust me, there are some "not highly recommended" hairdresser in Dubai... Who will charge you only 50-80 Dhs for the trim or cut. I have had color that didn't cover Greys, I got a cut that i didn't ask for. When you pay nearly 1000 Dhs and you leave salon with the feeling of "da fuq happened ???" After having my "expensive" expriences, I usually go to cheaper places. I tip the girls so that they do good job. "Famous" & "expensive" doesn't always mean "good". Hair trim for 100$ is just not worth it.

I don't have good news to tell you. One of my friend had similar problem in Some clinic in Jumierah 3. She had to suck it up. Unfortunately, these desperate clinics who put groupon deals, won't have enough heart to refund in such exceptional cases as well. Consumer rights also is good for nothing. If amount is not too much.... Try to suck it up. Sorry about your skin issues.

I am usually not a person who likes to kill others excitement. Today after so many days, I logged into just to tell you something. Good or bad haircut in Dubai is matter of "luck" I suppose. I have had excellent haircuts at Essential, they are very reasonably priced also. I also had a bad color and highlight at your "Today's favorite " place. They didn't know that they were not suppose to bleach my hair because of previous treatments. I don't like to bad mouth about any business as at the end of day, it's someone'S bread and butter. I know the feeling of having a bad cut for 200 Dhs and I also know the feeling of getting your hair burnt for 1000 Dhs. Hairdressers in Dubai are just a matter of "Luck"

I was in similar situtstion, started using bioderma 50 spf, it is specially made for pigmentation and it's working amazing on my skin. A bit greasy to be honest but it reduced my dark spots and enhanced my over all tone. Not too expensive either. You can find it at boots.

Hi, I took metaformin for 2 months only around 10 years back, but I was on BCP since I was 23. I'm 36 now, I went off the BCP at 30 , got pregnant and had a baby, then I went back on the pill. In august 2013 I went off the pill , got pregnant in Jan, then miscarried in April. Since the D&C I've been having regular periods and no pcos symptoms. I was overweight during my teens, by I lost the weight by dieting and exercising. Now I regularly exercise, my diet is healthy and my weight and BMI are normal. edited by wickedangel_78 on 21/02/2015 edited by wickedangel_78 on 21/02/2015 Thank you for feed back. I was asked to reduce some weight because of PCOs, now I am in healthy range as per my bmi. Just scared if I stop taking medicine I would put on all the weight back or what ?. I hope if others can manage with diet and workout, I shall too. Thanks again. edited by lilly111 on 21/02/2015

Thank you everyone for your ideas. I don't think so partnership will be workable for me. I have my own way of running things, which I don't see in many young business people, I will not like to change the way business is run. I have already started looking for a person assistant, that's only thing I feel will work for me. Good luck to all who are looking to start business, its not that difficult if you have helping hands to share responsibilities.

Its not a big set up, but making fair enough for me. Nature of work is such that I cannot rely on staff, because they do not delivery quality work if not supervised. Employees are employees, they won't take business as serious as you take it your self. May be I should consider option of a partner. Thanks everyone for replies.

What does your husband do? Does he work? have his own business? Just reading between the lines here, so forgive me if I am wrong, but it sounds as if your life here relies on you, and you are not getting the support from your husband. Doing it alone even if it just feels that way is going to grind anyone down. Generally I would say that we start a business from scratch because it is something we LOVE and are passionate about, and while sometimes (often long periods of time) the reality of it is just sheer bl00dy hard work, exhausting mentally and physically and it's hard to see the why of what we created in the first place it's still our baby and we put more of ourselves into it than is often healthy or wise. If you feel like running away then something in the balance of things is not sitting right. If it's the other way and the business was created through necessity rather than passion, then your feelings are utterly understandable. If it was me, I'd be having a wee chat with my husband as a starting point. It sounds like you have other dependents on your visa situation? (Again, reading between the lines) but if that's so, you have a lot of pressure on you from that quarter alone. Oh, and take a break. As a Manager of people your first priority is to have an exit strategy. Some one among the people who work for you must be capable of training, up-skilling and in effect taking YOUR role so that you can free yourself to grow the business without the clutter of the day to day paper work etc. Delegate. Train. Put yourself out of your position and take real pleasure in helping someone achieve that position and be really good at it. Husband is self employed too, but visas are under my business sponsorship because DH took his own time to establish. Ultimately, All contracts are under my name too. I started business out of need, although it is profitable now but I don't see any more expansion chances, because I don't wanna hire more staff. Its just toooooo much for me to handle. Unfortunately, I have had clash with my husband on same thing, I don't have energy to handle these things due to my medical issues as well......and he is not keen on returning back to home country. I am not sure if he will be taking all the responsibilities of vcisas etc.....he has been just saying...."you know I can't do that".

Which one is better, composite or silver? How much does it cost and any recommendation s please? Should cost You from 250-850 AED per tooth depending on the situation of the cavity. I got it done in Dubai and was not happy. My dentist insisted for silver one and I gave my pain for so many days. I got it redone from my home country. There it inexpensive.

Horizonmum could you please let me know the details of your place is satwa the salon is called Beauty Plus Salon... just opposite the bus station... and Alizeh's contact number is 055 182 3918 ... tell her you were recommended by Christina (hopefully she'll remember me!)... I went there last in april this year I second beauty Plus salon for hair. I went there for several treatments (botox, rebounding) and took my friend for a Brazilian blow out last week. Every time result was stunning. Hairdresser Aliza is expert in her work. And prices are bargain. Blow out was only 900 AED for very long and thick hair whereas other salons quoted about 2500 AED. Did not try any other service so can't comment on anything else.

Honestly it depends on what You want. Kerastraight will make your hair sloghtly manageable not straight. That You can achieve with any keratin or hair botox treatment. There is zero blow out available now which is formaldehyde free. I believe that still works better than kerastraight. In my opinion K.S is just over rated. P.s: I am talking about effects on wavy hair.

OP, you are on your DH's visa. There is no ban that can be enforced. 6 months ban is implemented on issuing new work permit by ministry of labor. She is on husband visa but she will not be able to work LEGALLY for next six months as labor office won't issue new work permit.

Any ladies on here have any luck with their search ? Thank you Hey Blondie. Don't know what treatment you should do as keratin won't work on curly kinky hair. Lilly111, I put an ad on-line looking for a new house maid and the first question I was asked when they called me was "what is your nationality madam?". Don't get so annoyed about it, let it go, it is like a lot of things here if you let it in, it could eat you up! Let go and let God at the end of day we are all trying to do our best here away from family and all we've known as normal to experience a different view point. At this stage you are probably expecting people to ask and can see it coming, try to expect a different response or try to response differently you may be surprised. When I come across an experience I don't like I ask myself 'how did I attract that?' We are all responsible to how we treat people and at the end of the day our treatment of others good or bad come back to us.Take it on the chin girl, don't bring a word like racist into it as I think that word goes beyond and is rooted in deep hatred which regardless of all the ways here I don't believe racism comes into it. Be the change you want to see, not easy but I have to remind myself of this every day:) Belle797, Woaha....Yes. That would be even more annoying for me.. And I gave up on looking for maid. Its plain sick to deal with anyone who generalizes people. edited by lilly111 on 19/04/2014

Just wondering.... If you were the receptionist at a medical clinic, and when calling to make an appointment for the first time, I asked you where the doctor's qualifications were from, and what their approximate age was, would you be offended at that too? I am not the receptionist. But certinaly I will call you a racist if after making appointment you call it off. Because You found that Doctor was some Indian, regardless of his experience and qualification. Even if You reject him because of his age. He might be more qualified and experienced than older doctors. Never judge a book by its title. edited by lilly111 on 19/04/2014 I never said you were the receptionist, I said "if you were". I didn't say anything about where the doctor is form, it was about where the QUALIFICATIONS are from. If I go to a clinic where one doctor is a 27 year old with qualifications from Cambodia(!) and one doctor is a 52 year old with qualifications from England, you can bet money I will go with the latter! No it is not racist, the one with the qualifications from Cambodia could be from England and one with the English qualifications could be from Burkina Faso! Where the person is from does not matter to me, it is where they were trained that matters. Which is why the boards, posters and cards read, British qualified, German qualified, American board member ...... Because it makes a world of difference and I don't care if it is not politically correct!! edited by Irooni on 19/04/2014 I think you misunderstood what this thread is about. I am talking about rejecting a person because of nationality, even though they are excellent in what they do.

Absolutely nothing racist about that - unless of course you are looking for it. Hi Izzy, I said the same thing. Sad fact is: many of us hire based on the skill set of the potential applicant and I know that alarm bells -- for me, at least -- do tingle faintly when certain nationalities apply for positions for which they are essentially unsuited. I am, for my sins, more likely to look more closely at those for whom English is a second language when my priority is employing someone with A+ British English because there are certain requirements for some positions which simply cannot suit some people, irrespective of their list of degrees and work experience. I learned the hard way when a technical writer from a certain populous nation peppered his phrases with 'Hinglish' phrases and spellings that may have made perfect sense to him and his compatriots, but would have put off potential clients due to what *they* would see as elementary errors. This writer had already had his work amended by a qualified English editor but he changed everything BACK to his original phrasing because he thought it was 'better' ... which resulted in eight hours of extra re-editing time, putting the project proposal in jeopardy. Had the clients been Indian and familiar with the phrases this writer used, then in all likelihood, he would have been perfect for the job. But the clients were a split of Emirati and British directors and they would have viewed the proposal as an insult in many respects ... and they would have wondered whether we could address the project itself with the professionalism they believed it deserved. That's just my story though. And the above incident has no doubt coloured my opinion of the ability of ESL speakers to cope with a particular role and as a result, I am more wary. But one would -- surely -- sooner employ a medical doctor from a recognised school than an enthusiastic naturopath so I stand by my choices. Some employers are looking for certain things and some nationalities or rather, people -- irrespective of their nationality -- cannot make the grade according to the requirements demanded by the job and the company doing the hiring. I'd never be rude about it though. And I always ALWAYS give people actual feedback as to why they were not successful for a role. Because you're [insert nationality here'> is NOT a reason. Because you don't fulfill our requirements in *these* areas IS a reason. Hi ladybee, You are not at all racist in this case as writing "skills" are must for the post you mentioned and if you choose to reject someone for the same reason, its well justified. I am talking about such situation when workers are not rejected because they "lack" in required skills. They are rejected because they are not from one of client's favorite nationality. Not only This is annoying and offensive but also it develops rage and haterd amongst those rejected workers. Its not relevant but think about those maids who were treated like they are some inferior human and they ended up either killing or hurting kids of sponsor. So you will blame nationality of maids in such cases? If So....You are racist.

In business world, to be in the position of negotiating about the cost and accepting offers, it's important to understand the person you are negotiating with, its called business negotiating skills. What those clients are doing is not negotiating it's stereotyping, out of the blue pop a personal question like that, so they *think* they are going to win you or understand what bases you are, these people don't have the skills to do the negotiating, they just being smart areses! I understand your frustration from the question been dropped like a slap on the face, just ignore the question and move forward with your presentation or business plan, if this ignorant kept asking it, just tell him you are doing business here and not getting acquainted with him/her. If the question about the nationality of the staff kept piping up, simply show that your company is conducting training to ensure that all staff are equally qualified to do the task. Being in customer service makes [u'>some people[/u'> *think* they owned this or that customer service employee, they can make him/her lower than them, make fun of them, or even show off on them, you will find some will try to make you make mistakes to hold it on you, so they can get more what they pay for from the company you are working for. you have every right to feel angry, but dealing with this type of smart arses clients need experience and training, and more of this patience from your side, after all the moment you sign off from work, you left these clients in the office, don't get them with you to your home, you need to separate what happen at work as not personal insult - I know it's personal - but you need to separate it, so you can live your life away from the office. HTH Thank You so much GB for your advice, it was much needed. I am sure I need to learn a lot , develop more patience and train my people. (Hugs for you) @Lolacat sorry for misunderstanding joke. I really had bad afternoon. Thanks to EW I am feeling much better. Thank You Redrec Tangle at least you understand my point. Thanks to everyone for thumbing down or thumbing up. And apology to Marroosh if I said something wrong to hurt You. Life is too short to fight. We all will die leaving behind whatever car you drive. No matter what passport you hold. How much you were earning.and what language you speak. At the end of day all that matters is who lived well and who is remembered for good deeds. Take care everyone and have a good weekend.

I was taught a very interesting saying "don't let the beggars grind you down - if they do, do not let them see it has". Thank SJ1968 and everyone whoever thinks I am over reacting. I live in my fairytale world where all people are equal and I don't believe in countries/nationalities. Superior people are those who care for others. Don't hurt anyone by any means, verbally or physically or mentally. One single experience can't change my opinion. So cheers everyone. Words hurt more people everyday than bullets do. Please watch what you say before speaking. I find Prozac helps tremendously in such cases, lol I don't need drugs to be a better person. Probably its good for others. edited by lilly111 on 17/04/2014 edited by lilly111 on 18/04/2014

Well this is very interesting to read. I would like to ask Lilly111 why she does not liked to be asked her nationality. Lolacat, when I need some service I do my research before going to them. When I chose one company I would like to know about their projects, photos to show me. Also pricing. when I am Ok with everything and about to decide I can politely ask "so what about staff, where are they from?" Or if they are well trained. I am not annoyed at asking , I am annoyed at the way they ask. I am proude of what I do, who I am and about my country. I am proud of my business and no one in market can match our quality of service and prices. I have wonderful American, westerners and Arab clients who praise me because of customer service and my friendly attitude. Its handful of those beaches** who think only belonging to one part of world can make us successful and that's their country. I understand Lilly, sometimes the customer service industry can be testing, but as infuriating as it is you have to find a way that you can deal with it without it getting to you. In the big scheme of things if someone asks about nationality then that is their issue not yours. You are the professional, you answer and move straight on to point in hand, remaining professional. You never lower your morals and beliefs. In your posts below you unfortunately did that in retaliation to a poster and made some comments that are simply not acceptable. Therefore you placed yourself in exactly the same position as the exact same people who upset you. Don't rise to the bait, always turn such things around by remaining professional and polite. Remove the chips from the shoulders and live your life, don't play the game. (also charge those darlings double LOL) You have great customers, you know you do a great job, you hopefully have your health and family, what more can anyone ask for. Thanks for pointing out. You are right. I need to keep my calm and be more mature. But to be honest, I am happy to lose such clients and avoid grrr grrrrr. Because no matter how well job is done, they will never be happy. Thank a you again. I need to improve anyway.

180 AED hair term every month. 120 AED manicure and pedicure once in a month 600 AED Thai massage every weekend for a month. 500 AED once every 3 months for hair treatment. Even if salons are empty, they make money by ripping of whoever comes to them. Lol

Well I am not doing an office job. And we are providing technical services. So it would sound stupid to me if someone is bothered about my English or nationality of my Carpenters. All that matters in such jobs is how well job is done and the charges. Rest honesty, professionalism and customer service has nothing to do with nationality. Probably humanity/manners is the last thing people care in this part of word. You said, and I quote " I m into public dealing and supervise a group" I would think that your English would need to be spot on for that kind of role. If you misspell some word that would be a typo or autocorrect and if I do, its my weak English. ?

I would not want someone offering me a service if they don't understand me properly. Btw you really think I don't understand English? ?

Secondly, how on earth you are living in a country where government department and locals speak little or no English ? Unfortunately, its hard for some people to understand that being able to speak one language doesn't automatically make you super human. Otherwise none of westerners would land in jail after being drunk.

Well then don't do business with them and don't work with them. And I would definitely not let it bother me to the extent that I am shaking with fury. Not worth it. Other than that I don't know what you want to achieve by posting it here. edited by Marroosh on 17/04/2014 To be able to know if its normal to feel bad or I am over reacting. Anyway thank you for your time.

Have you asked them why? Maybe the are looking for a specific nationality, or perhaps have experiences with certain nationalities that makes them not want to work with them anymore? Maybe they are looking for certain language skills or cultural understandings. If it bothers you so much I'd ask them what their reasons are. Marroosh, I asked everyone of them that why they are concerned about nationality. And its not that they are doubtful about service. They normally come after getting recommendations. On a counter question they find me rude :-/ its not one person but 3 out of 10 people do tend to ask this question. What annoys me more is there is a way of asking. Not just plain (slap?) How much you will charge and next is what is your nationality. Regardless of my experiences, I don't find it appropriate to ask someone first or second question in conversation about nationality. My work has nothing to do with language etc. Its all skill based. Its not this that I don't understand ....its the way people ASK.
