For the Melbourne ladies,

Travelling for the first time to Melbourne for NYE, although hubby lived there some years ago.

Where would you recommend we stay with our 20-month old baby?

Also, what are the nice places to eat - nothing too swanky as we will have DS with us but we do like good food. Kids friendly is a plus but we won't guide ourselves by that for the restaurants, only for the accommodation.

Thank you!

Richmond has fab thai restuarants...

It sure has enough space for the cot and the room has everything, all the kitchen utencils are provided if you want to make your own breakfast. There is woolworths a few blocks away to get some grocery. I think Docklands is also nice, check it out. There is a factory outlet there and many nice coffee shops. When i choose a place to stay, food is the first thing in mind haha so everywhere we go we want to make sure it's easy to find nice restsurant. That is the main reason i chose to stay in china town and we were spoiled by choices. My hubby and I are asians, btw :-) so it feels like home.

Thanks KamW! By family friendly I meant something like the Punthill Little Bourke :) a bit space so that DS can run around the room and where we have space for his cot. We recently stayed at a W hotel and that was so not family friendly, but then i should have known better, although i did enjoy the treat ;) Will have a look at the locations and discuss with hubby. Thanks!

I stayed at a service apartment called Punthill, they have many locations. Your hubby may know which area is best. I chose Punthill Little Bourke in the middle of china town because the location is very good. It is surrounded by many good restaurants and within 5-10 mins walk to free shuttle bus and tram stop. They don't have a parking space though if you plan to drive you'd have to park at the paid parking area. I'm not sure how it should be like when you say family-friendly but punthill little bourke doesn't have a garden or a pool for kids to play. I am very happy with my stay so maybe you can check out the website? Hope this helps.

Yum yum ... I think we are sorted now for eateries. Thank you :) Has anyone travelled there to visit and stayed anywhere they would recommend? Hubby has just been checking for hotels and apparently over New Year's Eve they are triple the normal price - to be expected - but we want to make sure we stay somewhere that is family-friendly.

If you like Vietnamese food, you'll have to go to Victoria Street in Richmond. Our favourite place is Minh Minh. The "squid in salt sauce" (basically salt 'n pepper squid) is awesome! There is an off-licence next door so you will be able to pick up a bottle of wine to go with your meal.

Walk down Swanston St for great Asian food (easy access from Melbourne Central station) - I would highly recommend trying some Vietnamese pho. Grossi Florentino on Bourke St is always a good bet for amazing food. Sorry I can't help with baby friendly accomodation, but enjoy Melbourne!
