Hi, I am after any advice I can get!! I am moving with my husband and 1 year old son to London ontario (much to the confusion of the movers!!). I am also pregnant with my second child, due in decemebr. Does anyone have any advice on anything! We are selling a lot of things, most electricals etc. We have Marina wooden furniture we are shipping. Will we be able to get similar items over there as I would like a couple of additional items. I am also having the baby there. What will the procedure be?? Do i see a dr for prenatal as I do here or is i midwife care as in UK? Ive never been to Canada before and Its all happened very quickly, so life is chaotic at the min and am just looking for any information and reassurance that will calm my stresses as we leave in 3 weeks now! :-S Thanks

I'm from London Ontario - lived there until I moved here last year. I loved it - I have tons of friends back there still and I can probably hook you up with some "mom" forums to help you find friends. It is a really great place to raise kids. You can try www.londonmoms.ca <-- great forum with lots of nice ladies. Midwives (at least among my crunchy friends) are really encouraged, though there might be wait list because they are super popular. There are also doulas, and strong support for breastfeeding rights if that's your thing. You won't be able to get UK brands, but that shouldn't matter because because Canadian food is wonderful. ;) feel free to email me: millionsofdanielles at gmail dot com - if you want to talk about areas of town, specific concerns, best places to take the kids, etc.

Thank you so my for the help and information!! You do make it sound lovely! I hope we can make it work over there!! I'm so excited but anxious too as its such a big change and at such a big point in our life too. I guess you get very comfortable with a place, and that's how I am with Dubai. Sounds silly but little things keep niggling at me like (I'm guessing) but not being able to get any uk food brands, something that was always comforting about here! But then again theyll be loads of other new things to do and try! Anyway, thanks again and I'll get researching on those websites!!

London is a very nice University town. There are a number of very good hospitals and all of them are University linked "teaching" hospitals so there is no shortage of doctors. In Canada traditionally family doctors - are fully qualified to deliver and do most of the deliveries (although I think that might be changing), Obstetricians used to be only for hi risk pregnancies but not sure what it is like now. Also Midwives can be good if they have a lot of experience. So not to worry, you will be in good hands. Normally you need to be referred to an Ob-gyn and finding a family doctor in Canada (you should have one) is a bit of a nightmare as there is a shortage. However you are lucky as it is a teaching centre and there are tons of amazing doctors there .You could try contacting the Byron family medicine clinic and they could give you some advice and probably accept patients as they are a teaching centre All the health care hospitals come under London Health Sciences Centre - here is the link and you might contact them to ask - if you look at this page link it lists the 4 main hospitals and the 2 main family medicine teaching clinics so you should be able to get answers from one of them (note there are also family doctors and obstetricians in non-teaching private practice- they might not be accepting patients though-someone at one of these links should be able to advise you and also advise you on what private patients do) http://www.lhsc.on.ca/Patients_Families_Visitors/LHSC/Getting_Here/index.htm Note that Private pay patients are a rarity in Canada so might take a few people to get answers you need. also, there is a forum for expats for canada- maybe post some questions there- http://www.expatforum.com/expats/canada-expat-forum-expats-living-canada/73077-what-london-ontario-like-live.html London is a great town. a lot of university students so just make sure you dont rent in a building or house that has a lot of students or you wont get sleep. a lot of houses close to the campus (around the perimeter) are rented to students. You will be 45 minutes drive from lake huron, with beautiful sandy beaches. Make sure you make it to a little town called Bayfield some time - they have a nice playhouse theatre (not for kids- proper plays) and cute little shops/restaurants and stunning sunsets. Grand bend is closer but more of a party town on the beach. Stratford is another nice day drive and is home of the stratford theatres- another great day trip. With little kids, Storybrook park is a beautiful park along the Thames river (everything in London and surrounding area is named after the UK) that kids love. Autumn there is beautiful. Winter gets alot of snow but not as cold as other regions. Farmers markets are awesome. I am jealous. Have fun!

Oh dear, not much help for you. Let me see if I can provide some information. First of all, you will have four seasons. Winters can be harsh, but have been somewhat milder over the past few years. There will be loads of shopping in the area, so don't worry about not being able to find things. Canada has socialized medicine and I am gathering that you are not a citizen so I would expect that you will have to have some sort of private medical insurance. I don't want to get into a debate about health care, in some parts of the country the health care system is maxxed out. I don't know the specifics for London but there will be a public health office that you can call and they can possibly provide information about health care in general. This will be important for your little ones if you want them to go to any type of daycare/schooling, all their shots will have to be up to date. London is in a pretty part of the country, not too far from the Niagara region which is well known for it's produce and w*ne regions. Here is one link to get you started. http://www.healthunit.com/default.aspx <em>edited by cafe au lait on 26/07/2012</em>
