Hi - we are moving back to the US in July and have a large labradoodle that we need to take with us. He weighs about 40 kg. We were told by Dubai Kennels and Cattery that it is cheapest to take him as accompanied baggage with us Lufthansa. The cargo option on Emirates was costing 25,000 dirhams vs the 1000 dirhams or so option of flying with the dog as excess baggage on Lufthansa.

This seemed like a no brainer until Lufthansa just told my husband that 32 kg is the limit for accompanied excess baggage. Dubai Kennels never mentioned anything to us about weight restrictions so we have no idea who is wrong and who is right. And of course, now we can't reach either the airline of DKC this afternoon.

Like I said, Max is about 40 kg and his box weighs about 20 kg so he's not a light package by any stretch. Does anyone have experience of flying with a BIG dog as accompanied baggage? Is it possible or is that for little dogs only

If cargo is the best option, should we do Lufthansa or Emirates? Which is cheaper and hopefully also more reliable? Our final destination is Orlando so maybe it's best if Max gets a break in Frankfurt.

Thanks.

I can recommend using Linda Tedd at Pet Express https://www.facebook.com/pages/Pet-Express-Dubai/177907415595014, even if it's just to give you the correct info ...

For the booking (if you're taking them excess baggage) you can do it over the phone with KLM - I did it last night to take a dog and two cats to Canada with me next week.

Hi! We've flown our giant child all over the world too. Highly recommend KLM -- they are excellent with animals. Fly to the nearest airport of your final destination and drive the rest of the way. We've always done this. Ours weighs 50kgs and flew as live cargo. When we got to Amsterdam, they had walked him and given him water and he did just fine. You'll have to get started on the paperwork -- go directly to KLM and get started with reservations for a space for your dog to travel on the same flight as you. Good luck!

Although I only have experience with my rescue cat, I can't speak highly enough of the amazing assistance given through DKC. If they haven't answered you (yet), I'm certain they will. My puss flew KLM unaccompanied DXB-AMS-YVR, and DKC kept me updated the entire way. I chose this routing because of a shorter layover time than the Lufthansa schedule was offering in FRA. The KLM flight and ground crews were also really helpful, both in AMS and especially on his arrival. (I was a very nervous mom). Puss arrived safe and well-looked after.

We flew our Lab from the US through Frankfurt on Lufthansa and she got excellent treatment. I would 100% recommend them. She flew as cargo and had a long layover in the Frankfurt airport and was vet checked while there. She flew from Houston so the layover in Frankfurt broke up the long trip into two easier 7 hour trips. Please do not fly your dog on Delta. We fly them as a family but I would never fly my animal on them. They have a terrible reputation and the pet relocation company we used out of FL would not use Delta because of their mishandling of pets.

KLM is your best option. They have an excellent reputation for transporting pets. I'd simply fly to the closest airport to your home that KLM serves (without codeshares just to ensure there's no confusion) and if needed rent a car for the rest of the journey, although you can always find out from KLM if they will transfer your dog from a KLM flight in Amsterdam to either Delta or Air France flights to the US. But if you're leaving in July you need to sort this out ASAP as you must book space in the airline for your pet in advance, even as accompanied baggage. Keep in mind the airline will have minimum crate size for animals. And you also need to organize the export paperwork via the Dubai Municipality, so don't leave it till too late. This will require visits to your vet and the DM pet export office near the airport. I'd get on the phone with KLM immediately and find out what the best flight options to the various cities near you and what days works for your dog, and make sure you get their required crate sizes too. Get on the phone and go! Time's running out. edited by Tallybalt on 28/06/2014

KLM don't fly to Miami, you'd have to fly from AMS to CDG then on to Miami with Air France. Check if Air France will fly dogs as excess (and up to what max weight) and maybe consider DXB-CDG-MIA with Air France. Air France's website isn't as informative as KLM's but hopefully they'll have the same policies.

Thanks Sanddy_Dogg for the recommendation on KLM. They don't fly direct to Orlando so maybe we can fly somewhere close by in Florida (maybe Miami) via KLM and then drive with Max to Orlando. Diet is not an option for Max as he is actually proportionate for his size. He's just a giant dog - about the size of a small great dane. His father was a standard poodle who was as tall as a small pony and his mother was a stocky English Labrador. So Max has the privilege of having the height of a small pony and the girth of a Labrador. Not an ideal combination but that's just who we he. I can't believe we have to spend a fortune to take him over but he's family so we can't really leave him behind anymore than we can leave behind one of our kids :) - Not that we haven't thought about it.

KLM will take dogs as excess baggage up to maximum weight of 75kg http://www.klm.com/home/ae/en?locale=ae_en&query=pets#g_np_sa-page=1&sa=2 They're the only airline I know who will take pets weighing more than 32kg as excess baggage. Lufthansa dropped their limit to 32kg last year.
