When we left the US 18 months ago, we left our vonage behind and picked up a magicjack. It plugs directly into the computer (makes it easier if a v. p. n. is required, although we haven't needed one). MagicJack also lets you transfer your current US number. TinkerbellsMuse - any chance you could email the details of that router to CdnExpat70 at gmail dot com? Done edited by TinkerbellsMuse on 24/07/2012

Let me add that had I stayed I definitely would have delivered at Latifa. I was impressed with the myriad of tests they ordered for me and the level of care.

We use EarlyBird You have the option to choose a variety of waters and they also deliver soda, juice, milk, snacks etc... We pay the same price as we did with Oasis and we have the choice of delivery times and even delivery within an hour. They have 24 hour service and also have a drop off pick up program for entertaining. https://www.earlybird.ae edited by TinkerbellsMuse on 24/07/2012 edited by TinkerbellsMuse on 24/07/2012

national Transportations Safety Administration Birth – 12 months Your child under age 1 should always ride in a rear-facing car seat. There are different types of rear-facing car seats: Infant-only seats can only be used rear-facing. Convertible and 3-in-1 car seats typically have higher height and weight limits for the rear-facing position, allowing you to keep your child rear-facing for a longer period of time. 1–3years Keep your child rear-facing as long as possible. It’s the best way to keep him or her safe. Your child should remain in a rear-facing car seat until he or she reaches the top height or weight limit allowed by your car seat’s manufacturer. Once your child outgrows the rear-facing car seat, your child is ready to travel in a forward-facing car seat with a harness. 4–7years Keep your child in a forward-facing car seat with a harness until he or she reaches the top height or weight limit allowed by your car seat’s manufacturer. Once your child outgrows the forward-facing car seat with a harness, it’s time to travel in a booster seat, but still in the back seat. 8–12years Keep your child in a booster seat until he or she is big enough to fit in a seat belt properly. For a seat belt to fit properly the lap belt must lie snugly across the upper thighs, not the stomach. The shoulder belt should lie snug across the shoulder and chest and not cross the neck or face. Remember: your child should still ride in the back seat because it’s safer there.

Children a safer rear facing up until age 2 and the recommended weight of the particular car seat. Very few kids that age have legs so long that they a hindered by the seat back. One-year-olds are five times less likely to be injured in a crash if they are in a rear-facing car seat than a forward-facing seat, according to a 2007 analysis of five years of U.S. crash data.

I used one for my son until he was 6 months though it was viable until he was 2.5 and loved it! He seemed very comfortable in it and slept well from early on. If I ever had another baby, which I won't be, I'd do it again.

hi LilyPad, 3 years ago I registred at Latifa but decided to return home to have my son. In my case it was a good thing I did. Registering is a definite must but do trust your instincts as well. Things would not have turned out well for us if I had stayed...details don't matter I guess...but do what is best for you and baby! Good luck with insurance, it sure can be a pain in the booty!

In the local paper...too bad this reporter didn't do a little better research! He states in the article "The annual fees for British and American Schools ranges from Dh30,000 to Dh50,000." That would be nice! I am familiar with two American curriculum schools where the annual fees range from AED 69,186 to 77,190, before uniforms, transport, books, etc. http://gulfnews.com/news/gulf/uae/education/parents-in-dubai-hit-out-at-extra-school-fees-1.1052595 We are in the American Curriculum and pay between 30-50k BUT we pay much more than that for our daughter going into 11th grade. Specifics in reporting certainly ar critical.

yes, it would seem the only solution is to give the v p n its own router... There is a company that sells them that way.... we did it ourselves easy enough.... Using DD-WRT ? Most people need some knowledge of networks and routers so that they don't brick the router. edited by TinkerbellsMuse on 23/07/2012 no idea - i leave that to my husband who has plenty of IT know-how.. Also as long as meat is fresh (never frozen) you can easily bring it in a cooler bag in the hold if it's vacuum sealed. Then you don't have to worry about anything defrosting. I've brought kilo upon kilo of beef and pork from Oz, the Uk/Us and South Africa, and I've never had a problem :) We do it very time hubby gets a trip to the US. Luckily that is about twice a month.

Ebola, I don't disagree and would, in all likelihood, pay someone to do it since there are many out there who do it nicely and inexpensivly. But she still shouldnt have to. Unfortunately though its one of those idiosyncrasies of living in Dubai. edited by TinkerbellsMuse on 23/07/2012 i don't think it's exclusive to Dubai - there are some sh*t landlords everywhere, even in the UK lol I've never rented but I'd guess that to be true since people are people no matter where you are.

yeah, if you dont mind i would love one. i didnt think it would stay frozen that long so i thought maybe you were joking with me :) Nope. Hubby brings me spiral honey hams etc... If its something we think will defrost over the flight we'd pack it in a Cooke rout so far we've never had to. We freeze it and take it out right before walking out the door then pack it with other frozen items. In fat I have had items I didn't want frozen, like Jalepeno Artichoke dip from Costco arrive partially frozen. :). Just let me know what size. I'll be doing my food shopping at SAMs and Costco in the days before we leave. edited by TinkerbellsMuse on 23/07/2012

This is for painting on the inside, the tenancy contract states that it is the tenants obligation to paint if tenancy is dissolved before 3 years - however we have leased the villa for 7 consecutive years! why can't you do it yourself ? She could but why should she when the landlord agreed to have it sorted.

Yes, he's mad :) A few years back it was perceived as being 'far out' but Dubai has grown and stretched so far now, I wouldn't consider it to be far away. And now the flyover is finished the access is easy. Not to mention its an easy drive To Mirdiff City Center and Mall of the Emirates. There is Spinneys in Motor City etc...

I remember back before my husband and I were even married and he was working in Iraq, he always flew through Dubai to get home on his vacations. I asked him once where Dubai was and he said "I think it is an island south of Europe" lol Generally speaking he is horrible with geography anyway... but like a lot of people I had never even heard of this place. That's funny! Travel and Dicovery have Dubai shows on frequently so it's up and coming. ps, you have mail....

I am hardly selfish, the world doesn't revolve around me or my children and you said it, time and place. I rarely go out to eat and even more rarely to the cinema but there are movies that are kid appropriate...not baby..but kid. You can't go to a Disney animated film and expect only adults, same goes for some restaurants. For example, mall attached restaurants. Yes, I know, you didn't specify Disney or animated but generalising that children don't belng out at a restaurant or movie isn't fair. That being said, the OP asked for a relaxed place where a small child would be accepted. It's my assumption that neither she or her husband want and patrons to be irritated. IMHO those were the key words. edited by TinkerbellsMuse on 03/07/2012

I had my 4 year old daughter and 2 year old sons tonsils and adenoids taken out by Dr. Aleem at City Hospital. Both had problems and my sons tadenoids were larger than water chestnuts. I kept a photo because even Dr Allem was surprised by the size. Anyway, he has wonderful bedside manner, was great with the kids and made us all feel very comfortable. Both kids were eating normal foods that evening and back to their regular self the next day. He does do an overnight stay rather than day case in the rare event of bleeding problems which we had with my2 year old. edited by TinkerbellsMuse on 03/07/2012

Presam, you a quite right. Kids make noises when they are out. Shrieks of delight, excitement etc.... I have always been one to bring my kids since we don't dine at black tie restaurants and if they get too noisy I remove them, get them settled and bring them back in. It's how they learn to behave in the particular situation. To be fair, I've seen my share of adults and teens that are worse then the kids.

Not urgent at all, but DS has requested for a Spiderman cake for his birthday which is end of July. The thing is we are going for holidays tomorrow till the day of his birthday and I need fool proof recommendations on where to get the Spiderman cake from, so I can ask DH to order the cake while we are away. Anyone ordered any Spiderman cakes recently? TIA Always order from Park'n'shop, never had an issue and they usually have a good selection of images. Thank you MrsMopp. I will need two when I return from the US and bet Parn N Shop are reasonably priced as well. The prices in Dubai for cakes kills me.

I'd go to one of the big hotels as they will have lots of guests with children eg Madinat, Jumeirah Beach, Atlantis etc etc. DS came out to dinner with us frequently at this age, we always went early and that helped teach him how to behave when out ... he was certainly not allowed to be 'shreking' though, we sort of had rules at the home dinner table that we just carried out the same rules when we were out. I used to take something for him to amuse himself with (cars, colouring, lego) but nothing noisy if he got a bit bored. He was very good and still is .... aged 14! thanks cymraes! he has table manners, well whatever you can expect at this age! But he is a hyper active kid, gets over excited and "shrieks" in happiness. So what you a saying is that he is a normal healthy happy child :)

for 150 you will get a good sized villa in satwa or al badaa - right next to jumeirah one. But then they are quite far and have to deal with traffic when it comes to school. Midriff would be central for work and school and has many quiet areas.
