Same, I'm halfway through the final book and they have all given me strange / scary dreams! Really enjoying them though. Apparently the movie is coming out next year.

Dr Nataliya delivered our DS in January at Medcare. I had an epidural. The only pain relief I was given afterwards was Panadol but I didn't need it. Good luck!

awww cute, he is starting to realise he has choices, and getting annoyed when he doesn't get his way. Distraction/change of scene is your best ally in this one, waaaay to young to be reasoned with. Now is a good age to start doing baby sign if you think he's frustrated due to lack of communication. Ben points at things or names them if he knows the word and then signs "want" which I find very endearing ;) apart from when he's pointing at my boobs and signing "want" in the middle of the supermarket. lol....I had to laugh at the "awwww cute". We thought so too at first, then we thought "oh no, we have an angry baby"! Baby signing sounds like a good idea and I have thought about it. At the mo I get my shirt pulled on and someone practically trying to climb in when he wants more!

I was the same during the first trimester. So tired I would cry. I used to get out of bed in the morning, have breakfast then go back to bed for a few hours (in the weekend when not working) I'd say sleep when your body tells you it's tired, the extreme fatigue doesn't last all your pregnancy and you do get your energy back. But sleep as much as you can now!

When you find out let me know. I have a 7 month old and slowly going crazy! We go to the coffee morning some weeks but since we're now a one car family it makes it hard to get out and about. Looking forward to when the weather starts to cool so we can start going for walks outside again.

I'm the same. We've been here nearly 4 years and every time we head home to NZ it gets harder to come back to Dubai. We really miss the outdoorsy stuff, and miss my family terribly. I'm not sure if it's because our DS was born here this year and it's time to move on closer to home or what it is. I do miss NZ, but don't feel like it's time to move back there and would love to have an adventure in another country. It always takes me a few weeks to get back into the swing of things when arriving back in Dubai.

I would co-sleep but i can't as my husband is a very heavy sleeper and would be too scared. Tonight he cried and cried - eventually [i'>[b'>i caved and climbed in his cot with him[/b'>[/i'> (good job i'm small) he shut up instantly climbed onto me, laid on my chest and cuddled me and went to sleep - sooooo cute but can't do this everynight!!! Awwww....cute! :)

We had Etisalat normal internet when we were living at the Lakes, then switched over to Du which was meant to be better and it wasn't. We're living near Festival City now and with ELife Fiber Optic package, internet speed is very fast and we're really happy with it. So much better than what we had with either provider at the Lakes.

Thanks HAK. I just let him have one of those baby milk biscuits and he was very chuffed at feeding himself. Big smiles from him while I'm on the edge of my seat nervous as anything! Sounds silly, but I'm a bit of a worry wort :) Do I need to cut the steamed veg into small pieces or let him gum off bits?

Poor doggy, and poor you! I hope your baby will be ok. Reading this has made me miss our canine baby we left with the inlaws when we moved here :( Miss her so much but she has acres of lovely green grass to roam around on and a bunch of alpaca's to stalk all day (Border Collie) I have fingers crossed for a speedy recovery. :)

Sounds fantastic. I will note down his company name for future reference and have a look out for his FB page and website. I'm sure it will be a life changing experience. I read an article in The National last Friday about a local lady who took her 7 year old son on the Annapurna Circuit and it just made me want to go there even more. I've cut out the article and filed it away. I would love to take my son when he's that age as well.

This was on my 'To Do' list but DS arrived before I got to complete my list! Will have to wait a few years now but I still would like to do it. Which company are you doing it with? I'd be interested to hear about your experience. My friend and her DH did the Annapurna a few years ago and absolutely loved it.

Hi Babylons, You are such a great friend! Every new Mum needs a friend like you when they have a newborn :) Asking for help isn't always easy, I know I struggled a lot (and still do sometimes even though DS is 7 months now) Just being there for her, even if you can't be there in person, a text message to ask if she's ok means a lot. It's important for her to have some time to herself so the pampering is a great idea. One of my girlfriends and my DH both chipped in and brought me a spa gift voucher when DS was born and it was heaven to have a few hours to myself. She definitely needs to sleep when baby is sleeping. If she can nurse lying down even better. I still do this when DS is sick, or he's had a bad night and I'm exhausted. Once she finds her feet with baby maybe she could come along to the EW Mums & Bumps coffee mornings. I find them a life saver. Just getting me out of the house and having other ladies to talk with who know exactly what you are going through is great. And also posting on here, so many wonderful ladies who can share their advise. Tell her she's not alone for sure :)

Thanks for the suggestions ladies. I tried the vicks on his feet today and also sprayed his nose 3 times with the saline spray (instead of just once like we had been doing because he always cried!) He's breathing through his nose much better now and no more crying with the saline so he must be used to it - Thanks! :)

I've also been putting Vicks Baby Comfort on his chest and back, it's sort of like Vicks Vapor rub but for babies so was hoping it would clear him up a bit but it hasn't. Might try the BM though, thanks for that Pentel! The wonders of BM ;-) KS, my sister told me about sucking it out with your mouth, though I'm not too keen since DH and I are both full of cold as well (Damn open plan offices and people not staying home when they're sick!) Will try the massage though - thanks for that :) Poor wee thing, also has a cough and it's really messing with his sleep. Still in good spirits but won't sleep and grumpy come feeding time.

I liked Kaz Cooke's book - the rough guide to pregnancy. Rather funny, but informative. Just be aware that no book is going to be spot on, no book is going to describe exactly your experience (to come) and you can read the whole library full and then find it was all rubbish! lol Loved Kaz Cooke's book! And you can also read all the books and forget everything you read when your LO is here or find putting it into practise just isn't as easy as the book makes it sound!

My 'Bible' while pregnant was "What to Expect When You're Expecting" Has pretty much all the questions you would ask when pregnant. It breaks your pregnancy down to months and has all the info on what your baby is doing growth wise for that month. I found it really helpful. I also brought the "What to Expect First Year" but haven't used it as much. It breaks down your child's first year into months and lists what your baby might be doing that month , tips on baby care etc. BabyCenter.com is a useful website. It has lots of great info plus videos you can watch. I made DH sit down and watch a few birthing ones with me and had him cringing and feeling sorry for me! huggies.com.au was another website I used alot. Good luck!

I don't think she has misunderstood as I was also given that advise when DS was just shy of 8 weeks old. I did question this as I thought I hadn't heard right (DH was there with me) I couldn't do it and think it's far too young. I was thinking about this and since this "professional" seems to be doling out this "advice" to a few people, could I possibly ask that those of you who do receive it,[b'> really grill her on what foundation she bases it on. Ask her if she's aware of the studies that show it to be at best pointless and at worst traumatic for the baby. Ask her how she aligns it with the baby's development and how it fits in to this.[/b'> Basically, I was told a couple of months ago that the government only requests about 1/3 of the continued professional development (CPD) within the medical professions that other countries do and has only just made this decision. I fear, therefore, that there are many "professionals" out there who have not kept up with current studies, research and thinking. CPD is considered essential to any profession, and is taken so seriously (in the UK at least) that if you don't keep up with it, you can be struck off and banned from practising until you get back up to speed. It's a bit worrying to say the least. Looking back on it now we should have done this but when you're sleep deprived, first time parent, teary eyed, no idea what you're doing, read all the books on how to etc - well.......

shelly...yes we do know who that is, but my understanding is 20 mins of being with baby, only leaving them for 5 mins and then going back in for another 20 mins, not the opposite way which seems awful, especially for a 6 week old!! Yeah, the OP said though her advice is the other way around - so leaving the bub for 20mins to cry and so on. I think the OP must have misunderstood this advice (if its from who we think) as I don't believe she would offer that advice for a 6 week old. I agree with other posters, 6 weeks is far too young for sleep training. And this is coming from me who is and has been super strict about DD's routine since day 1. I don't think she has misunderstood as I was also given that advise when DS was just shy of 8 weeks old. I did question this as I thought I hadn't heard right (DH was there with me) I couldn't do it and think it's far too young.

Hi Kie, Did you try SuzyDuzy's #1 tip that she wrote below? Our DS wouldn't sleep at all during the day when he was first born and would eventually conk out at 3pm from shear exhaustion. We then moved his moses basket into his own room (he was sleeping in our living room with all the noise) and were able to get him to sleep albiet for only one sleep cycle at a time. I would race into his room just before the end of his sleep cycle and be there patting & shushing him to help him through to the next cycle. I also brought a Winnie the Pooh comforter for him, put it down my top for a few nights to get my smell onto it and I put it into his basket with him. Eventually he started snuggling up to it. It takes persistance, I had many, many hours standing at DS's basket patting & shushing him but it did work. Eventually she will work out how to resettle on her own. DS never took a dummy but when he finally worked out how to get his thumb into his mouth he was able to sleep longer on his own without our help. Do you live in Dubai Kie?

i'll show you a calculation based on low spending.... If you calculate housing at 80'000AED which would be enough to get you into a 3bed in Mirdiff or possibly an apartment and baring in mind these won't be the nicest places (I've just looked at an apartment in DSO for 75'000 per year with 40 days free and it was horrible IMHO) so thats 6666 per month, then you have school fees, and I'm assuming coming from NZ like me you'd like to have a decent school for your children, just calculating on the age group your kids are at today you'd be paying around 38000 per year per child at a decent school at more reasonable prices, so thats 6333 per month, then for a villa in Mirdiff if we calculate the DEWA (water and electricity) you'd be looking min 800 per month including housing fee (this is a modest estimate, and people have been known to have huge unexpected bills, so you have to account for that too). Then you'd either buy or rent a car, and assuming you get one cheaper rental you'd be looking at paying 1500 per month for that. Then you'd have to get petrol and depending on how far you travel per day you'd probably be looking at around 800 per month. Then food etc you'd be looking at around 5000 per month. Also as a first off for getting your house you'll have to pay a 5% agency fee 5% deposit and 1000-2000 DEWA Deposit The above is really basic expenses and doesn't include mobile phones, health insurance (if this is not included in your package and you'll have to get it as health care is expensive here), tickets, TV, landline, Internet etc Any way based on my conservative calculations you'd be spending around 22'000 per month. My personal opinion is thats not a very good package to leave NZ for (i'm a kiwi also). Its quite dangerous coming out here without any leeway in your package, and honestly not worth leaving NZ if you're not able to travel, save, and enjoy the lifestyle here, I mean if you're going to be poor you're better off being poor in NZ then here. Also, in terms of work for you, it really depends on your expertise and qualifications, bare in mind jobs like data entry, and many of the admin roles are low paying as lots of companies only offer low salaries as many qualified individuals from other nationalities are willing to accept these salaries that we might think is not even worth getting out of bed for. And also its not that easy to find work at the moment unless you're a teacher, doctor, nurse. Just take a look at the threads here of many complaining they are unable to find part time or even full time work. And also keep in mind if you are to take on full time work you'd have to arrange care for your children which also comes at a cost... I don't know what your husband works in but he should try to negotiate a better package, it is true that many companies now offer just a monthly package, but 27k is still low for a family in Dubai, If that was a salary for a single person I'd probably say it was OK, because you can flat, you don't have school fees, you would spend a lot less on food of course, and you're more able to move if need be then someone with a family. For a family, I'd say it would only be worth coming from NZ for a 40'000 package if they're only paying a monthly salary, but the better packages are salary + housing provided (which means they organize the payment, so you don't have to worry about having to pay in one cheque to 4 cheques, because as much as people say you can get 12 cheques, it comes with a higher price and they are few and far between) and also an extra schooling allowance, health insurance and return tickets yearly for the family. Coming from NZ myself and having lived here a long time, I can wholeheartedly say its not worth coming out here unless you're able to enjoy making good money, because in all honesty NZ is a fab place so it has to be worthwhile leaving it :) Completely agree - DH and I are both from NZ as well and we both feel that package is too low.

from the diaries of the less-than-perfect mom: "Threw a whole pack of kidney beans on the living room floor and told my DD to pick them up... just to give me enough time to chop all the veggies and finish off my cooking uninterrupted!" :) i'm a horrid sadistic person but i was going absolutely mental with her getting in my way in the kitchen! "Pinched a quiet DD so that she created an absolute ruckus at the airport to speed us through passport control" i know i know i'm terrible... but was absolutely desperate after a 9hr sleep deprived economy flight! Love it! This has given me my first laugh of the day....thanks! Will store those two away in the memory bank for future use with DS ;) We did find that he was pretty useful getting us through passport control on our trip last month, he was very grizzly and they sped us through which was super!

I didn't have help with my newborn either. Back home we don't so I didn't think I needed help here. DH was & still is a godsend though. He's very hands on. The first week I didn't change one nappy at all! Very important to sleep when baby is sleeping, don't worry about housework! DH is a clean freak but that's all changed now our LO has arrived. If it bothers you that much get a cleaner in. If you don't want one full time use a part time agency one. Those first few weeks finding your feet can be extremely exhausting so make sure if you need help, to ask. I was always on the phone to my sister or friends asking for advise etc. DH had to go on a business trip when DS was 2 months old. He was away for 2 weeks and I was so panicked leading up to the trip I worked myself up into a right state. His parents were going to fly up from NZ to help out but in the end I decided to do it on my own. I managed just fine and it was a really nice time with just me & my DS. Good luck :)

Not at all, great thread Pentel! Today we had Yellow Dahl (which my part-time Indian maid cooked so I can't share the recipe but its good even without salt) , we have pretty much the same thing for breakfast every morning which is either; A) rice pudding (made in slowcooker with 5Tb spoons short grain rice and 3-4 cups milk, with a few cardamom pods chucked in for flavour and removed before serving-sometimes I add an egg yolk too) served with either a fruit puree or these days genrally sliced fresh fruit (peaches/necatarine/papaya/banana). or B) A baby version of bircher muesli (cooked brown rice put in the blender with a few prunes/figs, a raw apple, milk, yoghurt and cinnamon.) My wee guy has reflux issues with wheat, oats and dairy which makes life a bit tricky, we don't have any pasta or cheesey dishes which writes off most of Annabel Karmel's ideas ;), we have a lot of rice & curry based dishes or meat and veg..... Lamb Shanks/stock/risotto in one go (tender enough for his 4 little teeth) 2 shanks (we use NZ lamb, of course :) ) in slowcooker with any vegies you have handy (sliced onion, garlic, potato, leek, tomato) and some fresh/dried herbs (I usually use mint or rosemary), and enough water to mostly cover the meat (its ok if a bit pokes out). Cook on low for as long as possible, overnight at the least and up to 16 hours to really get all the flavour out of the bones. The meat will be falling off the bone and easily removed. to extract the stock, gently drain and pour gently into a tall thin bowl and let cool, remove the fat from the top and you will be left with a rich jelly stock which you can use with rice to make risotto, or add to soup etc. Often I just let the liquid cool in the pot and remove the fat from on top, then add rice straight to it this a bit stodgy for the adults vs normal risotto technique though, but fine for baby ;) Good on the side is peas pureed with mint, this is also good on the side of... Salmon (wrapped in tin foil and baked with olive oil and basil, with lemon zest) try to buy the tail fillet as it never has bones. I also puree the leftover salmon with cream cheese and spinach or cooked corn, as a sandwich/rolled pancake filling. Chicken thigh also slow cooked with loads of tarragon, onion, leek and a little cream (thickened with cornflour and flavoured with white wine and salt for grown ups), served with mashed sweet potato/parsnip/cauliflower or finger food vegies Chicken or white fish or beef or lamb meatballs (meat, herbs, onion, egg, breadcrumbs, blitz in food processor and bake in oven. I roll these into sausage shapes rathe than balls so they are a better finger food. Rice pasta with a soup used as pasta sauce (sweet pototo or squash, fresh coriander, onion, garlic, ginger, coconut milk, butter, celery, garam masala) Snacks are usually finger foods like steamed brocolii and baby carrots, blueberries, sliced papaya, rockmelon, peach, mango, banana. I get SERIOUSLY hungry when I read your food posts!! :)
