The American University of Dubai have provided the volunteers for the labourers English classes, maybe contact them. http://www.thenational.ae/news/uae-news/english-classes-give-uae-labourers-a-second-chance Also what about contacting the schools that do IB. The secondary students are required to do 150 hours(?) valuable/charitable Community Service as part of their Diploma (CAS). You could perhaps advertise on the noticeboard or in the newsletters, maybe some of the students would be willing to help teaching some English to needy children as part of their Community Service . I have read in some countries that the IB students are doing just that. Worth a try. edited by Alismum on 12/09/2014

Taking about imbalance in society, another sector of the population that are few in numbers over here are the elderly, where are they hiding?. How many folks do you see with grey/white hair for e.g in the shopping malls, those who are perhaps 65+?. I went to the beach the other day with my kids and got to thinking about this, I never saw one person with grey hair, or older than about 45ish on the beach. edited by Alismum on 04/09/2014

Marroosh I like browsing around Superdrug as well. Boots in my home town is huge (on two floors), you could spend half a day in there looking around, they sell everything apart from the kitchen sink. The tiny Boots branches over here do not compare. Maybe if they did open Superdrug, it would be the same as Boots branches, overpriced and understocked.

I agree with Diamante, but do check with RERA because you are in effect changing the terms and conditions to four cheques instead of one cheque, which you might not be able to do without the landlords consent. You might be entitled to the same rent as last year according to RERA rules, but you may have to pay in one cheque again, same as last year. Always best to check.

http://www.expatwoman.com/forum/topic163307-something-is-eating-my-clothes.aspx We have discussed this before :) I haven't got a car, so can't be the seat belt for me. Also if it was the washing machine, zippers etc.. how come they are always in the same place (bottom of T.shirts). I don't use vanish or anything like that either. As for the kitchen tables, the counter tops are way above the area where they are on the shirts etc, so definitely not the kitchen, also DH hardly goes in the kitchen and he has them as well, also my son has them and he is bone idle. If it was silverfish or moths, then there would be holes all over, they wouldn't eat at the bottom of each T.shirt. I think ilovechoos theory about the button on the jeans rubbing on the bottom of T.shirts could be the reason.

Have you tried the microSD in your PC to see if you can access the files from there. Same thing happened with my sons, but we could access the files from the PC. I'm finding lots of conflicting dates, any definitive yet? I read that there will be an official announcement after 9pm tonight to say whether the moon was sighted or not, if sighted Eid will be tomorrow, if not then day after. The first thing you need to do before you move into a villa is make sure the landlord/agent has got a pest control company in to do a thorough sweep of the empty place, inside and out. They stick brown gummy stuff in places, particularly in the kitchen, and this gets rid of cockroaches, which are the main "bugs" you are likely to get. They say you should get pest control in every three months, but ours has lasted for two years. The pests don't go immediately, it can take a couple of weeks before they all disappear, if there is an infestation. Oddly, the worst place in our house was the hinge part of the dishwasher door, where they laid eggs because of the wet and warm environment, I think! Now we take special care to make sure that hinge is always cleaned out, we haven't seen any for a couple of years, as I said! Good luck, our little geckos are lovely and eat other bugs! [b'>we've never used pest control, not even before we moved in[/b'>... Have never seen a rat yet - and there is a lake nearby... edited by Doubting Thomas on 22/07/2014 Neither have we, OP buy a container of boric acid and some Pifpaf, you'll be fine.

I think it's a very old article. The author mentions the Burj Al Arab on licence plates and people running in front of cars for blood money. The BAA disappeared off the plates years ago, and I thought that the blood money thing was changed years ago too. Sandy it is, I remember seeing that article a long time ago as well. It's just awful:( There were 189 Dutch people on that flight, and that bring this tragedy very close. Every time I read about plane crashes and other tragedies it always happens somewhere else to other people. And then there is the Australian family who lost relatives on both the missing Malaysian Airlines flight and the one that was shot down yesterday. How terrible is that? It is terrible. Bless all the souls on board and all the families who have lost loved ones. I am flying to Schiphol in couple weeks, am a bit concerned, I hate flying at the best of times. ETA I didn't know about the Australian family that lost relatives on both flights, how sad is that :( and that Grandfather that was taking his 3 Grandkids back to Australia. edited by Alismum on 18/07/2014 I am flying to Amsterdam and London in a few weeks, but I am not afraid. It happened over Ukraine, not in Schiphol, but I guess when you already have a fear of flying, this is not helping at all. Hope you will be ok, wish you a same flight InshaAllah. I know it went down over Ukraine, but the flight was from Schiphol to Malaysia, with the flightpath over Ukraine, but like Lola said lots of planes have taken that same route to Europe (maybe from here too), and the Malaysian one happened to be the unlucky one, guess it could have been any of us. I am flying alone with my LO en route to England, I have been to Schiphol a few times, but do have the jitters a bit this time. [i'>"Airlines which used the same airspace over Donetsk as the MH17 plane on the same day include: Jet Airways; Thai Airways; Pakistan International Airlines; Qatar Airways; Etihad; Emirates; and Austrian Airlines 300 passenger planes were scheduled to fly over Ukraine yesterday. Some 290 commercial flights continued operating over the war zone, with just 10 fewer aircraft entering Ukrainian airspace than normal, according to European air traffic control centre Eurocontrol The flights were still operating in the conflict zone despite warnings from as far back as April from the UN's International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) about potential risks to commercial planes."[/i'> edited by Alismum on 18/07/2014

Tamannakhan this thread is from 2012 :) Good deal for the meals though. Also for those who do want to help hand out donated meals, you can turn up 30 mins before Iftar at the construction site next to Media Rotana, Tecom, you can help the volunteers set up and handout food to the labourers From http://www.motiroti.me/fillingtheblues/ [i'>Each night of Ramadan, we, the local startups and upstarts of Dubai, will aim to fill the bellies of the labourers toiling in the summer heat. Volunteers always welcome. How does it work? Every night, one homegrown business will team up to provide and handout food to labourers finishing their shift. For nights we cannot fill, we will provide 100 biryani packages through donations and help of volunteers. How do I take part? Volunteers: Turn up any night (except Fridays) to the construction entrance next to Media Rotana, Tecom. Bring whoever you like. Setup starts at 8.15pm, then we just hand out the food as the guys start clocking out. Please bring cartons of water if you can :) UPDATE: Thank you everyone. Amazingly now, around 50 extra labourers are coming every night from neighbouring sites, so we still gratefully accept donations to provide extra food for these guys too, please spread the word. I have just spoke to passport office to renew my sons passport, and you need to get an appointment at an office to do the 7days service, and the appointments can take three weeks, I was lucky I got an appointment for next week. Yikes!! 3 weeks for an appointment, then 7 days service??, so that's around 4 weeks, may as well post it and have regular service?? Buddha, might give it a miss then and come back and send it off from here. I will have 6 months left anyway in August. I can't hang around for 4 weeks in the UK, I am only going there for 2 weeks and I really can't trek up to Liverpool or Peterborough.

We ended up getting an EmergencyTravel Document to get out of the UAE and then applying using the 1 week service in the UK (which was not that much more expensive than the UAE application!) got the passport by the 3rd day, so they are capable of doing it more quickly when they want to. I am travelling to the UK in August, to get the seven day service do you just have to send by registered post to the passport office?. I really won't be able to travel to the passport office in person when I am there.

Hi All, I bought a new carpet (normal carpet, not a shaggy-ish rug) from crate and Barell about a month back and its been shedding like crazy. I have a two year old who plays on this carpet, and the fibres from the carpet is all over him, all over my couches, all over everywhere! We vacuum the carpet every alternative day. I called C&B to see if they could offer some advice - but they don't have any. They said it should be fine "Soon". Does anyone have any recommendations on how to sort out this shedding mess! edited by Zambia on 13/07/2014 Hi Zambia, I have had loads of wool carpets in my time and they do shed for a while, normally couple months, the shop is right, so wait it out all will be fine :)

Another scam to add from GN today [u'>International fraudsters target UAE hospitals in job scam[/u'> [u'>Modus operandi[/u'> 1. Fraudster sends an email to the candidate, asking him to fill up a questionnaire and choose the post he wishes to apply for from a host of ‘jobs’ on offer 2. Within weeks, F sends another email, informing C that he has been ‘accepted’ for the role he had applied for 3. C is now sent a ‘terms of employment’ that promises an outrageous ‘flat’ salary plus perks and he is asked to review and accept it 4. On accepting the offer by email, C is now sent a UAE ‘visa application form’ and contact details of a ‘travel agent’ designated to arrange visas 5. C is now required to pay $1,450 per person and $2,650 per family towards ‘immigration’ charges 6. C makes the payment in the hope of securing his ‘dream job’. However, most certainly will never hear from F ever again. http://gulfnews.com/news/gulf/uae/crime/international-fraudsters-target-uae-hospitals-in-job-scam-1.1357821 edited by Alismum on 10/07/2014

Sounds like she sees you as a pushover. I would give her a maids list (one of the below links has them), then when you get home from work go through the list with her, and ask her to show you the tasks she has carried out from the list during the day, then dock her pay or day off for shoddy work. Do this for a few weeks until she knows you're serious. or send her on one of these training courses to see if they can whip her into shape [url=https://www.facebook.com/housemaidhousekeepertrainingdubai'>link[/url'> [url=http://www.theperfecthelp.com/training_courses_for_maids_staff_dubai_cook--EN,m,4'>link[/url'> [url=http://www.sparkleandshineme.com/tdstaff.html'>link[/url'> edited by Alismum on 05/07/2014
