I stick my favourites on the wall. If you go to an art shop you can probably pick up an A1 folder thing that art students use to xarry their work..that's what I used in the UK, I'm sure you can get them in Dubai Borders have them and I think C4 does as well.

oh !! well, I've found 2 other posts that are lifted from elsewhere.... Same person too? yes Really strange! Definition of a bedroom thread.... Not strange if it's a professional poster, that's what they do... Oh, never heard of professional posters. can be quite lucrative if you do enough !! lol So someone actually pays them to paste material onto forums? yes - the forum owner http://www.paidforumposting.com/content/ Well I have learnt something new, would not have thought it allowed on here and surely not right if they are impinging on copyrighted publications. It's the internet - I don't think copyright law works the same !! lol I found one on a blog and another on a website... and you're expected to provide your own content, not just pasted from somewhere else... edited by Doubting Thomas on 04/07/2014 I never heard of professional posters before, I wonder how you apply :) ------------------------------ Mochas try here Glamour Jewellers 50, Gold & Diamond Park, Sh Zayed Rd, Dubai 04-3477878

I don't get the reasoning behind allowing free zone cafes to remain open and all other cafes having to close, are there no fasting people in the free zones? They have different regulations, and perhaps the permit is easier to obtain. The DMCC one (JLT) for eg. allows consumption of food on premises behind a curtain, it's 1510AED for the permit. Yes I understand there are different regulations between free zones and outside, but still wonder as to the reasoning in permitting consumption of food publicly in a free zone and not permitting the same elsewhere when it is all happening in Dubai in public. Maybe it has something to do with the FZ companies being independently owned rather than the non FZ entities having a local sponsor. Therefore they have a say in this? ( I don't know this but perhaps) Could be, but its the principle I find confusing. I think Sarah could be right as the companies in free zone have 100% foreign ownership. That explains how they are permitted, obviously there is no exemption on a religious basis such as there is in the airport and so wonder at the need for restrictions elsewhere, I would have thought it a matter of religious principle, but obviously its not. Deleted my last message cos I'm not sure I had my facts right due to seeing this doc http://www.ded.rak.ae/en/licenses/Permits/Pages/CommercialPermits.aspx edited by Alismum on 30/06/2014

My special needs boy is 16 and I take him with me to the ladies toilet when his dad or his brother is not around. He does look like a 12 year old and only 'special needs' when you take a closer look. We are in and out very quickly and after 7 years in the Middle East I only got a protest once from a security guy in a mall. Most ladies in the restroom do not have any issue with him being there and I feel that the women/moms in the ladies toilet totally understand why I have to take him there. I cannot understand the people on this forum are having harsh opinions about what and what age should be appropriate for boys to use the restrooms with their mom! There is no general age to determine what is right and what is not, it is very depending on the situation! I never had issues either, took my eldest son until he was 11/12.

I was really shocked by a video of a social experiment I saw the other day which was carried out in New Dehli. It was dedicated to the Indian lady who was raped a year ago and thrown from a bus. I couldn't believe the apathy of the people, truly shocked me to the core. [u'>The Braveheart Humanity Experiment[/u'> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jTiKGkKmaDQ [i'>NEW DELHI, India – The entire world was shocked when news about the brutal Delhi gang-rape case emerged wherein a student was gang-raped and brutally assaulted in a moving bus in the national capital on December 16, 2012. Law in India forbids media to name the rape victims, thus so many aliases was given to the victim, one of them is braveheart. On the evening of the incident, reports said that ‘braveheart’ and her friend were deserted on the road after the assault, and sadly, no one stopped to help them. As it shocked India and the entire world, strong protests and candlelight marches by hundreds of people in New Delhi and other parts of the country were done. The brutal gang-rape incident and the protests that followed even compelled the government to come up with harsher anti-rape law. But despite what happened, many were asking if society has changed. An actor, in the name of Varun Pruthi, carried out a social experiment to see if any difference had taken place in society. Pruthi appeared as an injured person soaked in blood, asking for help to bystanders and passing vehicles. The actor shouts out for help from passersby, but no vehicle or person stopped to help him. Some slowed down their cars to look at him; others just stood as mute spectators. As it seems to be the most interesting part of the experiment, even an ambulance doesn’t stop to carry him to a hospital, which is at a distance of less than one km from the site of the experiment.[/i'> edited by Alismum on 26/06/2014

Bess, Check out the comments on the bottom of the full article here though, some say it's not true. Maybe he wrote the article to sell his Blockly maze software????? Judging by what Fam80 has written below I'm not surprised tbh [u'>[b'>Trend Watch: Housemaids prefer Westerners[/b'>[/u'> It seems a new trend has emerged among housemaids in the UAE: they have a stated preference for Western employers. But before others start asking what’s wrong with working for us, let’s dig a bit deeper to find out the reasons behind this so-called preference. According to the helpers, the reasons are quite straightforward: comparatively better salary, limited work hours, public holidays in line with the private sector, full amenities in their separate room (which often includes a TV set with channels in their own language), Wi-Fi connection and a grateful attitude of Western employers. Classified sections of most forums have many adverts posted by housemaids seeking jobs in the country, but they prefer Western nationals and some of them are very particular about it. “I have six years work experience in Dubai,” says a Filipina housemaid and “it’s been only with a Western family. I am expected to work 9am to 5pm. I clean only alternate days, do not cook at all and keep the children busy. I am paid Dh2,000 per month and get overtime pay if my employer wants me to work beyond these hours,” she told this website. Most Western employers are more accommodating, say housemaids in the city. Nationals from countries such as Canada, Australia and England do not mind if their housemaid spends an hour or so daily on social media websites like Facebook. “And, they are very thankful for the work we do. My employer always says thank you for any chore that I do for them and I feel nice about it. The previous family I worked with was never happy and not once did they say thank you to me,” said a Sri Lankan maid working in Dubai’s Meadows area. A European family living in one of Dubai’s Springs townhouses only requires their maid to work five hours a day and are very happy. “She’s wonderful and she’s the only one we’ve had so there’s nobody to compare her with,” says the employer. The maids also maintain that most Europeans do participate in doing the daily household chores, like making beds, cooking, bathing the children, cleaning the kitchen counter tops and use the dishwasher to do the dishes. This leaves the maids with enough free time to rest and do their own things. Many housemaids also have specific preference for their work areas with Umm Suqeim, Jumeirah, Arabian Ranches, The Meadows and The Springs areas being their preferred localities to work in. “These areas have their own housemaid accommodations, so families don’t mind if my friend comes to have dinner with me. There are also parks and lakes in these communities where I can go and meet my friends. I go for a walk with my friends every evening around the lake,” said a Filipina maid living in the Meadows. http://www.emirates247.com/news/emirates/trend-watch-housemaids-prefer-westerners-2014-06-26-1.554351 edited by Alismum on 26/06/2014

Are there still lizards in Dubai? I live in a high rise apartment building and hadn't seen any lizards anywhere (even outside on the ground or in the sand) and thought they had gone extinct. I thought that maybe when the metro was being built, all the lizards had been killed. I am rather scared of them. Now I'll be freaking out and won't be able to open my windows. I doubt if you'll see them in your appt so no worries, I haven't seen any for a long time either, I only saw them inside when we lived in a villa with a garden. edited by Alismum on 16/06/2014

[i'>But you can see their organs inside...[/i'> Though I agree with not killing them as they eat the bad stuff. But still. See through creatures should not be allowed! Organs schmorgans, they are so cute! Especially the ickle baby ones with their big googly eyes. I love having house geckos quietly going about their business eating the bugs. They are cute. When we lived in a villa we had them, they do run away fast though. I'd much rather have those little lizards than those big sand spiders. We had a humongous jumping spider in the villa once, freaked me out. You rarely get loads of creatures in apartments though, it is mainly ghost ants and few roaches here and there. edited by Alismum on 14/06/2014

[b'>My DD's passport has finally arrived[/b'> after many sleepless nights, many phone calls and emails and finally a response from Mr Paul Pugh. What was angering me more than anything was that British Passport office continually told me to get an ETD if not back in time but were unaware of the difficulties of doing this from Dubai. I spoke to Uk embassy in Dubai and they said that although possible it was complicated and would depend on where your passport was in the application process whether or not it was granted.. They also said that in order to exit the residency visa would HAVE to be cancelled and to get back into Dubai you would need the new passport as can't get in on an ETD. You would then require to reapply for residency on returning to Dubai. Yet, passport office in UK blithely kept telling me just to get an ETD. That's good news :) edited by Alismum on 12/06/2014

From the National [u'>DUBAI // Holiday plans for many Britons could be thrown into chaos by delays in processing passport applications in the UK.[/u'> A [b'>cost-cutting initiative[/b'> by the British government last year has effectively doubled waiting times for applications to renew or replace passports The government has admitted renewing a passport could take “significantly longer”, after it closed a centre in Dusseldorf, Germany last year that handled applications from expatriates The UK home office says there are an average of 350,000 applications a year from expatriate Britons, which until recently cost the British government £41.4 million (Dh255.4m) to process. so was it the expense or the security???????????????????? If it's due to security measures they are all done in Liverpool now then it's probably all this guys fault [i'>In 2008, 3,000 blank UK passports destined for embassies abroad were stolen from a delivery van in England when the driver stopped to buy a chocolate bar.[/i'> http://www.thenational.ae/uae/expatriate-britons-fear-for-holiday-plans-as-passport-office-struggles-to-process-applications

The father should hang too - he must have known. He complied as far as I'm concerned. His hands have blood on them. If the maid saw it happening, hardly plausible that he did not. I hope his beautiful young bride was worth it. So fantastic that "his favorite" daughter is now a memory. Let the mother be alone with the precious young wife. And then alone with the father. Not knowing all the circumstances, but have to wonder why the children were given to the father after he divorced and remarried this much younger woman, why not give custody to the mum if she is capable of looking after them. Step mothers should not be given custody of children from another marriage unless the biological mother is an unfit mother imho. In [i'>'most'[/i'> cases no-one can look after and love her children like the mum can (even if she remarries herself). They would have to tie me down kicking and screaming, and commit me to a loony bin before I let my husband go off with my kids and a new wife. [i'>"My daughters, who were staying with their father, are always telling me about the assaults on them by the stepmother.”[/i'> beggars belief nothing was done earlier to prevent this if it's true ([i'>don't want to slate the mum though cos you never can believe all you read[/i'>) edited by Alismum on 12/06/2014

Hi Corin, Is this the company [url=http://appliancesrepairdubai.com/'>link[/url'> If so then it was me who recommended them on here and I am truly sorry. When they came to fix our fridge last year they did a real good job. We had about 3 cowboys out before this company and they were the only one who fixed it properly, plus their price was very reasonable. I don't often recommend companies on here, but I thought they deserved a mention since they did such a good job. Now I wish I hadn't. Go on the following site and get their license details by clicking on Trade Names http://eservices.dubaided.gov.ae/Pages/Anon/GstHme.aspx?lid=1 (I have already checked and they do have a current license with the DED) Then if you check the above website in the link (and it is the company), you will see many contact numbers. sms all the numbers telling them you have their license details and if they don't come and fix your washing machine properly you'll contact consumer rights to lodge a complaint. http://www.consumerrights.ae/en/Aboutus/Pages/Contactus.aspx [i'>In all instances you will be expected to provide your name and contact details, full details of the retailer/service provider and a description of the case to be lodged. You should ensure that all supporting documents related to the case are with you at the time of lodging your complaint. The Consumer Protection division will provide you with a unique case number which should be quoted when enquiring about the progress of your case which we will seek to resolve within two working days.[/i'> I would post their name on here, but I don't think you can name and shame, but for what it's worth, they have fixed a few things in the past for other people that I know with no issues, and my fridge is still working. But if it is the company you had dealings with I will delete any of my recommendations. edited by Alismum on 11/06/2014

While we are on the subject, what is it with the design of bidets? On a toilet, you have a good bum sized hole (give or take) with a comfy seat. On a bidet you need to perch on the cold, bare rim of a huge bowl, whilst you try to direct the water towards where you need it. Left to its own devices, the water trickles down the small of my back, which is generally quite clean already. I did face the wrong way on squat toilets for years, so it is quite possible that I have got this wrong too. Adjust the water pressure so it sprays where it is needed ;), never had an issue with it spraying my back !! sounds like you sat too far forward....... But mine has a downward pointing tap right at the back of the bowl. Am I supposed to put the plug in, fill it up then dip my tail feathers? Who has time for that? edited by Chewit on 10/06/2014 Umm, Chewit, are you facing the right way on your bidet? http://www.howcast.com/videos/351816-How-to-Use-a-Bidet lol. Actually the bidet over here isn't like the one pictured. The ones in my place just have a tap that shoots out water from the back. Joyce, the bidet is a great place for plants, and for foot washing... :) edited by Alismum on 10/06/2014

funny how no-one has mentioned the wastage of water...especially seeing as we live in a desert environment......Coming from Australia if everyone washed there would be no water........ ...and yet everyone washes their hands? and showers (well we hope they do) [b'>Good wash once a week in the sink, feet on the draining board[/b'> ;-) Ah the good old days, I remember them well ;) edited by Alismum on 10/06/2014

I believe the Daily Mail has phoned at least two people living in Dubai today re the passport issue. They are running a feature tomorrow. Whether or not it will help is anyone's guess. I hope it makes a difference. I think they should open a section in the embassy over here for Passport renewals and put us all to work (for good money of course :) ). I'm sure we could clear the backlog in a few days.

Oh dear!!! [u'>Union threatens strike over passport delays[/u'> [i'>Workers at the Passport Office may go on strike over the growing backlog, as warnings emerged that hundreds of thousands of Brits could miss their summer holidays due to delays. Up to 500,000 people may not get their passports before their planned departure date, as the department struggles to get on top of the backlog. so, do all the people who only use the spray seriously imagine that those of us who don't are walking around with "pooey bums" (to use my youngest's phrase) ? Do you not think that we make sure the last piece of paper is spotless before we finish ? Sorry to be gross about this but there seems to be a misunderstanding.. also, most times there's barely a mark on the paper anyway - perhaps different diets make for different consistencies that require different levels of cleaning - trying not to be too graphic !! lol when you blow your nose do you have to use wet tissues ? I have had this conversation before and folks who spray can't imagine that toilet roll can remove all traces of pooh. Some of them even think people just wipe once and go. Worst toilet I ever went to was in an outside kebabery in Deira... OMG I had to hold it in for an hour, couldn't face squatting in the squalid hole there. I really think that holes in the ground were not invented for women at all. How does a person disrobe or take off jeans in there. Not a pleasant experience at all.

I am a convert must admit, I couldn't be without these little hosepipes now. Also just to ask, you know the loos in the malls, they have a little bin next to the toilet where everyone puts in their loo roll, it's always overflowing. What's the reason for this, is it because of the plumbing system is crappy and you aren't meant to flush the loo roll down the toilet in case it gets blocked? Do people wipe and put in the bins?, what about after no2. I've never put anything in the bin - I thought they were for ladies' things... I have seen one of each, one for STs and the other for used toilet roll???, I think the idea is to wipe and put in the bins, else the toilet becomes blocked, not sure though.....
