Ok, I guess I'm in the minority here. But I know I'd rather have been raised by my mother - no matter where or how - than by anyone else and I assume that's the case for most people. That is, of course, if your mother is a kind, sane, loving person...

:D forgot to ask about price??? how much that costs? 4950 AED. I checked worldwide prices in case it was cheaper to pick it up when I was home but the price is more or less the same everywhere. Wow! That is expensive...

Hazel is great and talented but she leaves the biggest mess. Hair absolutely everywhere. To make it more painful she giggles "oh I would help cleaning but I gotta run". Only go with her if you live in a villa and can do this in the garden. Also she would not help much with washing your hair, which is a bit awkward. And you pay salon prices for all this. The end result is good though, and that's important. Not a glowing recommendation for her, I'd say... Be careful posting the contact details of these mobile hairdressers. They are all operating illegally and are subject to fines...

I have attended many play dates over the years and none have ever been full of maids. How about attending an EW Mums and Tots meet-up? What part of Dubai are you in?

After reading all the comments and having a long chat with my sister i thought why not go to these play dates. Even if the nap doesn't work out its not like i'll be going everyday. I thought i'd do it so my kids can interact more with other kids and I too can meet other mums. Anyhow i got up and ready and as i was driving i was feeling so anxious and nervous, i kept thinking what if i'm the only mew mum there, would they want, i sat in the car for ten mins with so many thought going over and over in my head. In the end i thought, i need to stop feeling like this and just go in. When i hot there i noticed that not one single mum was there, they had all sent there maids/nannies instead. I couldn't help but think i'm panicking for no reason, i was actually the only mum, all the maids knew each other and were talking amongst themselves and paying half their attention to the kids while i just sat there thinking this is just great. I was so disheartened because the invite was for mums in our area and not one mum showed up. I understand that mums may be busy and have this to do but come on, is it like this at every play date? No, it's not. What kind of play date was this??

If she is Phillipino , everything will be fine. She can tell her DH that she was raped by the Sir or she can just tell him the truth and he will probably just choose to leave her or forgive her. If she is Sri Lankan, it may be an issue. In all cases, the one who suffers the most is the child. He/she will never have the right to know its father...

Thanks anon.... So better to buy a back pack or a trolley bag..I have already purchased the swimming bag and the library bag... Well, RDS says not to bring extra bags, but you will see that there are days when they have a lot to carry and it won't fit in the book bag!

They need a book bag which you can buy at the uniform shop. They also need a lunch box and a bottle of water. I purchased a small backpack for my DD (also starting Year 1) because they have to go upstairs alone and some days, there is a lot to carry. You also need the swimming bag purchased at the uniform shop!

I agree it's too early to be buying things and seeing Christmas decs in the shops. BUT with Dubai life as it is, (people travel, family visiting etc) I don't think it's too early to be discussing flights/Christmas lunch reservations etc. Before we know it, it will be the end of September and everyone will be saying 'ohh, so and so is fully booked for Christmas lunch!'. Also thanks to the airlines jacking up their fares, it makes sense to get in early. Actually, it's not just a Dubai thing. I've been in contact this past week with many pubs/restaurants in the UK regarding our Christmas lunch booking and they are all taking bookings and have their menus finalised. I guess the early bird does catch the worm! You are very organised! Your travel plans are already finalised for Christmas! edited by AnonDubai on 31/08/2014

As a mom of 4, and with 2 currently taking naps, I recommend Diamonds that you get your baby used to napping on the go. I also have a 6 month old and I go out all the time with him. If I stayed home for every nap, I would never leave the house! You can leave at your baby's nap time, let him/her fall asleep in the car, then transfer. My son is currently non-transferable but I know from experience that if you keep on transferring, eventually they will sleep through the transfers! Also, let your baby fall asleep at the breast or bottle and then just put him/her in their stroller or wear a baby carrier.

I haven't heard that but it wouldn't surprise me. As other labor supplying countries stop supplying maids, the government needs to find new countries and they are now looking to Africa. Wouldn't it be nice to have a French speaking maid?

I have my own car. It really depends where you live and where you work. If you live and work near the metro, you might not need a car. But that is only if you live and work really close to a metro station. It is really hot in this country and you will sweat half the year if you need to walk outside for more than a few minutes. I wouldn't mind taking taxis occasionally but I wouldn't want to put up with them on a daily basis. They are not very reliable and their driving standards are often poor. So, IMO, you will need to buy a car if you are a Westerner. If you are not, then your company will probably provide transportation.

Surely your daughter was recommended the flu jab not because it would do anything about her asthma, but to help prevent her catching the flu, which could be potentially more dangerous for her since she's young *and* asthmatic? It was presented to me as something that asthmatics need to have and I was also told by others that their children stopped getting sick so much after they had the shot. Now I just see it as a moneymaking gimmick.... edited by AnonDubai on 28/08/2014

When I first moved to this country, I wasn't used to hearing English spoken by people other than Americans. I had real trouble understanding people from Ireland and the UK and I used to feel like saying to them: "Please don't call me. Only text me because I won't understand anything you say on the phone." More than 10 years later, I have adapted to all the different ways that English is spoken here...

I love all the accents My favourites being Scottish Liverpuddlian Geordie Northern Irish The stronger the better for me ;-) Now that we are talking about English accents, I'd like to go beyond the UK. The strongest accent I have ever heard was from a native English speaker from Trinidad and Tobago. He and I were speaking the same language but I couldn't understand most of what he was saying to me. Yet he could understand me...

What a shame, kids can be so cruel. Sadly, there are adults who are just as bad. We had a holiday in China with Saga which was almost ruined by a group of 3 couples who constantly made stupid remarks about our strong Glasgow accents. They were from Surrey and to be honest we struggled to understand them at times. These "adults" were all in their 50s!!! My DH eventually snapped and cornered the male ring leader one evening, tearing strips off him loudly in front of the rest of our party who also thought that this group were out of order. Their behaviour stopped and they kept very quiet after coming up against my normally quiet DH's wrath!! A lovely Welsh couple were also on the receiving end of these idiots' behaviour. Bullies need to be stood up to. Hopefully your DS won't come up against these stupid boys again. x Good for your husband! He must have shown that bloke from Surrey who's boss! Not quite LOL! He just made him look small and childish saying that the last time he heard that kind of infantile talk was in a school playground and wouldn't his grandchildren ( that he had been droning on about) be so proud of hearing the way grandpa treated people just because they sound different. Told him to grow up and tell his equally childish WEE pals to do the same, while pointing in the direction of the kids' adventure playground telling him to run along and play. The best bit was when the 2 lovely English couples we were sitting with, clapped!! :D Awww! We need more guys like your DH!

I was advised to get it for my DD who was 3 at the time because she was asthmatic. She had it in September 2012 and again a month later (because it was her first time) and she still had an asthma attack in that year. The way I see it, Doris, is that our children are going to have to learn how to face bullies and we as parents need to learn to deal with them too. It could be an accent, acne, being too fat or too skinny, wearing glasses, being too smart or pretty, etc... You just need to instill pride in your son about where he came from and I would have reacted the same way that you did. I would not have sent my son back to summer camp. How about demanding a refund for the days he didn't go?

I cannot answer your question but I have heard that it is really bad there. Please don't think that you need a c-section because your first was one. You can easily have a VBAC but Zulekha probably won't help you to do that. If you don't have much money, go with the government hospital or Baraha Hospital...

I love it when people wait for me to leave my space. Just let me get all my 4 kids strapped in their car seats, stroller in the car, all bags in, and then hopefully the trunk door will close after I have done that. You must also wait for me to breastfeed my baby at the steering wheel before I get on the road. Only then can you have my space....lol

This happens to me a lot when I do the school run. I consider it acceptable if the parent is just dropping off their child and coming back out because parking is very limited. I took my children to the Sharjah Discovery Center last week. It is a bit of a drive but that doesn't really matter when you have a whole day ahead of you with nothing to do! Actually, it is only about 20 minutes from the Mirdif area. Anyway, it is 5 dirhams per child and 10 dirhams per adult. We spent a few hours there and the kids had a lot of fun. There is even a climbing frame and some sporting thing. It closes at 2 pm. After that, we went for lunch and my friend and I agreed that it was a great and cheap way to kill a day with a group of bored children! edited by AnonDubai on 27/08/2014

She didn't even attempt to take it because she didn't understand the value of it... and you seriously need that type of people around your children? sorry, i din't mean to sound harsh She was actually very loving. I had a maid run away in February 2013. We have no idea if she was ever found. We never heard from her again. They certainly didn't look for her. She left with a SIM card in my name so I went to Etisalat to get a replacement SIM. I kept a spare phone on until November 2013 and calls from her country were coming in until then. No one in her country must have known that she had left. It is a big mystery to us. I think that there is a lot of money to be made doing prostitution and freelance cleaning...

You can bring over a maid from abroad using an agency with a two year-contract. You could just employ the maid for the time you need her. If she is good, you can just help her to find another family to work for. That would not be difficult as people are always looking for maids. If she is not good, then you can send her home...
