I know this sounds stereotypical and I could be wrong, but this woman looks like a breastfeeder...

Obviously someone saw her do it! Personally, I don't think it is gross but I don't think it is acceptable either. If she is a breastfeeding mother, then there couldn't have been an odor. Some people need to think logically... So, logically, you think it's ok to feed your children in a public toilet? It's not ideal to feed a baby in a public toilet but sometimes logistically, it is necessary... I have fed babies in public toilets many times, but not in this country... edited by AnonDubai on 12/08/2014

It's not nearly as bad but there is still an odour with a breastfed baby. As the mother, you are immune to it, other people aren't. It's not just the smell anyway, it's unsanitary to have an open dirty nappy around food. I do agree with you, but I don't think the issue here was the smell, and certainly other people couldn't have smelled it unless they were at the table with her. The owner mentioned a smell. I am calling that illogical.

A breastfed baby's diaper does not smell at that age. So if the baby is only breastfed, then there cannot be a smell. I don't know if formula-fed babies have stinky diapers. Does anyone on here know?

Hi. I don't know much about free zones but I know that there are several in the UAE. The free zones are for expats to run businesses and they don't need a local sponsor and I believe that the licensing fees are much less. Someone on the board should know more than me....

hmm i see now, thanks a lot dears however, i need to ask about that Entelaq license, is it only given for Emirati? as i am an expat can i apply as well? The Intilaq license is only for Emiratis. Expats are not allowed to operate businesses from home, but they can operate from free zones..

Why don't you consider putting your child in a nursery? I think that is a much safer option than hiring someone you hardly know to be at home all day with your baby.

Firstly, where is she now? You can put a UAE ban on her, but that is only for one year. A GCC ban would be possible but that is only if she is a convicted criminal. If you have not been sponsoring her, then a UAE ban cannot be implemented...

Wow.. went to Dubai Mall today and it really is amazing, isn't it? :) Level Shoe District had some really nice brands but then I found Kurt Geiger was right opposite. Bought 2 shoes - a red Bond (courts) and Gold Britton. They are lovely but I ended spending much more than I wanted. Thinking of buying out their whole shop next time I am there :P Only problem, they didn't have any bags over there. Different from what I have seen in London but good none the less. Staff was good too. BTW Carambar, are you talking about Galaries Lafayette? Rude staff and very old collection. Am I the only one who thinks that? Would have posted some photos but I don't know how :( It is not possible to post pictures inside threads on this forum. edited by AnonDubai on 10/08/2014

It is really luck of the draw to find the Elsa doll. I found it completely unexpectedly a few weeks ago. It seems to be unavailable everywhere and not just in the UAE.

I know they aren't at all but there a cheap play areas around that don't break the bank, trust me I know I'm on a very low strict budget. But sitting at home and being lonely and hating it here will cause bigger problems. 150 dirhams a week to get 2 - 3 hours out for sanity is worth it and once you'veafe a good friend they won't care about the state of your home as they've become friends with you not your money, home or car. 150 for one session ??? Yes, if you have to pay for 3 kids. Then add a snack or milkshake/coffee. And that is at one of the cheaper play areas!

Asti I don't agree with you that children don't play outdoors here - I think in most communities where there is outdoor space (like where the OP wants to live), apart from Summer where it's like the Pied Piper has been here, there are loads of children out. Sometimes it is hard to get them in! :D Yes, I agree with you. My kids play in the backyard all year long, albeit less in the summer months. As long as there is shade, they can be outside. Just put them in their bathing suits and get them wet so they don't feel hot... edited by AnonDubai on 04/08/2014

I just renewed my maid's visa yesterday and I paid the usual amount which is much more than stated in the cited article... The article states all new fees are in effect from 1 August so you should of paid the lesser fee as mentioned... Very confusing.... I have my receipt and I definitely did not pay 150...

After having had both young (20s) and older (35+) maids, I would say that older is better because they act more mature. However, you are more likely to be paying for dental and medical issues for an older maid. Maids know that their health care is covered here by their sponsor and some may have frequent health issues that you will have to pay for... But despite that, if and when I hire another maid, I will be looking for someone 35+... edited by AnonDubai on 04/08/2014

For Tanzanian the fee is 7000, and the waiting time is a lot less at about three to four weeks. When looking at the CVs, did you notice if any had GCC experience?

I have been thinking recently about the worthiness of having a maid. When you total the visa fees, salary, plane ticket, medical fees, toiletries, clothes, food, utilities, wiring money, phone credit, etc., it is actually really expensive to have a maid! You also have to deal with all of the drama of having an extra person in your home. Nowadays, so many companies provide services that maids do, such as indoor and outdoor cleaning, ironing, grocery delivery, etc., and you can avail of those services without going through all the sponsorship hoopla. So I think that maids should be on their toes nowadays. Unless they are offering something of extreme value to a family, like cooking or child care, it seems a lot of hassle for nothing. There really is no place for a lazy maid. And as I wrote down below, if you find that your maid is not making your life easier, then why have her at all? Sorry for the rant but I am starting to think that us EWers should make a list of how much a maid costs annually and then decide if it is really worth having one....

Hi, I'm not sure what sort of contract she is on but my understanding is that if you are an expat sponsoring then the contracts are yearly. It is only locals that get 2 year visas for housemaids. at. If an expat uses an agency to find a maid, then they, just like a local will get a two year contract with the maid. The visa has to be renewed after a year but the maid agrees to work for two years and that condition was accepted before leaving her country...

Yes, she is right. She would not be able to come back here but she can still work in other GCC countries like Kuwait, Qatar, and the KSA. I'm sure that she'd be thrilled to know that. She could also go to Singapore... If she doesn't have much time on her visa left, you might think of sending her home now. And remember this: If your maid is not making your life easier, then what is the point of having her? I also have to tell this to myself as I have a similar issue...

1. IMHO, no. In any case, I don't think that it would be easy for her to find another housemaid position in this country without references from you. If she is as lazy as you say, then who would want to hire her, especially with her high salary expectations.... 2. You only need to pay for her ticket home. If she had been good, you could have offered her a leaving bonus, but it doesn't sound like she deserves that...

Maybe you have considered these aspects, so forgive me if you have.... 1. You cannot currently bring over a Phillipino maid. 2. Most Phillipinos who are already here working would not agree to work for an Indian family. 3. Have you considered hiring a Sri Lankan? Then your food issue would be solved. Most likely, you would have to train a Phillipino to cook Indian food and as we all know, cooking Indian food is not easy. 4. Lastly, if you do hire a Phillipino, don't make food an issue. Many people, myself included, have maids from very different cultures. Maids are used to preparing their own food. My maids are very picky so they cannot eat most of what we eat, including anything with milk and cheese! They come grocery shopping with me and choose what they need or add what they need to my never ending shopping list... I am aware of 1. thanks so we're not considering that. 2. Its not fair or always justly deserved but I can imagine why. 3. is also a strong contender except for the level of english. 4. So your maid's meals are included in their salary? Would you say that's more economical than an allowance? I have never really thought about number 4 before. I buy food. They eat it. If I have a cake in my house, for example, I usually give half to them. If I order take out, I order a meal for them too. My husband is local and used to having maids and this is the way he told me it should be done...

I have 4 children. There are pros and cons to the situation, of course, but you could say that too if you only had one or two children. My husband is Emirati so it was easier for me to decide to have a fourth child because it is the cultural norm here. If you can afford it, then go for it. I don't think my third or fourth children cost us much extra but yes, there are the school fees to think about....

I'm in Uk at Present and can think instantly of 20 reasons why I love Dubai. Has any one created a more positive list of 20 reasons why the UAE is great? I will write 6 and I hope that other posters will add to my list. 1. Safe city with little violence 2. Good variety of indoor and outdoor activities depending on the season 3. Nice, well-maintained roads 4. Tolerance for all religions and ways of life 5. Wide variety of foods available 6. Availability of ladies' gyms edited by AnonDubai on 28/07/2014
