I think that they don't make it mandatory because there are some very large families here who could not afford several cars to shuttle all their members. Sorry but this could be the situation anywhere, its not an excuse, I know lots of families with 3+ kids back home and they manage, on very little money and they don't get assistance from the government beyond minimal child benefit which certainly wouldn't cover extra cars. It's not an excuse but it could be a reason why a car seat law is not mandatory here. Have you ever seen a Nissan Sunny drive by with 7 or 8 people in it? That's not such a rare sight here but would be quite a rare sight in my home country (the USA). I have 4 kids and a 7 seater-car. I could probably fit several more people in my car if it weren't for the 4 car seats. A lot of people who do not have nuclear families will try to put as many people as possible into one car. They don't even think of seat belts! edited by AnonDubai on 06/07/2014 Excuse or reason its the same end result for the kids whose parents don't understand. Not having a go at you just saying. Loaded up cars with adults and kids was a common sight growing up in Ireland, I traveled plenty in the boot of cars and the back of vans as a child and I'm sure it was common in parts of the US 20 yr ago too. Road safety is relatively new in general but laws and enforcement of same forced a change. Well then I have no idea why it is not law here considering that this country is so progressive otherwise. If there were a car seat law, store owners would be making lots more in profits. They could jack up the price of car seats. You'd think that they would have thought of that...

I have to say I am really very puzzled by all the thumbs down on this thread (cue me getting lots of thumbs down for this post :D) .. Especially for the original post requesting recipes ..and Izzys dinner.. 25 thumbs down? What's that all about? These threads happen every Ramadan and to me are no different from the countless other threads asking "What's for Dinner tonight" or requesting recipes for mulled wine etc at Christmas. Why all the disapproval for this particular thread? Genuinely puzzled. I got 9 thumbs down just for saying Izzys chicken broth sounds Lovely.. how bizarre How dare you support IZZY Maybe there are thumbs down because people don't want to eat chicken soup. I haven't thumbed down any posts on this thread but chicken soup does not sound appetizing to me, especially if I have been fasting...

Hi! I did this back in February and it was a pretty simple process. There is no difference between renewal and transfer in the immigration office. The maid does not need to leave the country. Both sponsors need to go to the immigration office with the maid's passport and fill out the paperwork and pay. That is it. After that, you will take her for her medical. She only has to do a blood and pregnancy test but they charge you the same fee anyway. Make sure that you have new pictures taken of her. They picked up on the fact that my maid's pictures were not new and made her get new pictures.

I did it several years ago. I think it depends on where you are going down South. We were going to the Toulouse area. My husband drove. I will ask him once he wakes up. He is an expert in Western European driving routes. You may have already considered this so please forgive my stupid suggestion but have you thought about just arriving by airplane down South? Emirates flies to Nice and Lyon and if you are going there from anywhere in Europe, there are lots of flights...

If you are open to the Taawun area in Sharjah, Victoria International School's nursery is absolutely amazing. My daughter went there and they have well qualified and amazing teachers, structured and well-designed curriculum, and a large clean classroom with outdoor playarea. That could be a thought, OP, and you wouldn't need to worry about the traffic as you'd be going against it...

Ramadan or not I've been working in DIFC since last September and some of the outfits I've seen women wearing, I wouldn't even expect to see in a non Muslim country! That is true. I know someone in the USA who dresses like a lady of the night. The other day, I was thinking that she would like living here because her dress sense would be more appropriate whereas it is kind of out of place in the USA where many women walk around in their pajamas... edited by AnonDubai on 01/07/2014

I have always used a sponge to bathe my babies. You can get them at the Babyshop for about 20 dirhams. The baby lies on top of the sponge. The mother kneels over the tub and uses the showerhead to clean the baby. As the baby gets older, its legs will be longer than the sponge, but that is ok. The baby's legs can be out and the sponge will just be under the upper body... http://www.amazon.com/Summer-Infant-Comfy-Bath-Sponge/dp/B000H953Y2 edited by AnonDubai on 30/06/2014 The link is just to give you an idea of what it looks like. edited by AnonDubai on 30/06/2014 Are u able to machine wash the sponge later?? No, but you can wring it out. And anyway, you will get rid of it after about a month and get a new one...

There is nothing wrong with being average, but surely we should encourage and believe in our children, because if we don't, who will? I once knew a mother who told me that her daughter had passed a very difficult exam. This woman told me that she told her daughter that there was no importance in her achievement because they were just working-class people. That could have been true, but surely we need to encourage and praise our children, especially when they are little...

Yes, I do agree with you, Silvstet. There is no offender registry here nor screening of employees who work with children and sometimes I wonder what kind of people are responsible for our children. I know that my children are never alone with any adult during the time that they are not with me, and I hope that that is enough. I also try to remind myself that bad things happen to children by carers all the time in my country (the USA) where they do have criminal checks before hiring plus offender registries.. In the USA, you can't even be a parent helper without going through a criminal check... Totally agree, and I also find it odd here that play outlets in the malls where under 5's are left alone while parents shop have male attendants, I was about to take DD's LO to the play zone in our mall and saw a male attendant handling a little girl inappropriately while lifting her up on to play equipment. I did an abrupt about turn, even though I was not going to leave here there alone. I would never leave my child alone in a play area, not so much because of the male attendants but because of the ubiquitous unaccompanied rough older boys who are too old to be there anyway...

Bit of humblebragging going on here, perhaps? :) I've never yet met a parent who didn't have a "bright" child. Even the ones whose kids were clearly totally average. Odd, that. edited by Madge_Gustard on 26/06/2014 Shouldn't we all be proud parents even if our children are 'average'? I agree. And also, I firmly believe that parents should believe that their children are exceptional or encourage them to be exceptional. If parents don't do this, who will? We are the only ones who will advocate for our children...

I took both my kids to Modhesh World and they loved it. I think its 6 halls at the DWTC with all funfair, games and rides. There is a roaming acrobat show, the music was a tat to loud but it was amazing. Nathan did lots of arts and crafts and there is a free baby gym as well.. supposedly for the above 3 year olds but my 9 month old had some great fun with all the toys.. Anon why do u dislike Modhesh? I really liked it. Indeed nothing Emirati about it to be frank.. all european brands there... I didn't like it because it is so expensive and I didn't think that there is much difference there compared with a shopping mall arcade. Plus they don't take credit card and they charge an entrance fee. Let's be realistic. If you have two children, you are looking at spending several hundred dirhams there. I spent 40 dirhams on the bungee jumping ride last year. That kept my kids busy for all of 5 minutes. Modhesh popped up today on all the road signs. Needless to say, I will not be happy to go there...

Men are not allowed to make unwanted advances to women or girls here. It is ok for members of the opposite gender to speak to each other. Let's use some common sense. Sorry, but how is a man supposed to know when an advance is 'unwanted' until after approaching a woman first? As I said, we need to use common sense. I'd say a bar is a safe place to hit on a woman... edited by AnonDubai on 23/06/2014

Wait until the staring moves onto openly trying to chat up your 14 year old daughter and her friend and trying to get them to meet up when they've finished work! As happened to us, so I certainly don't think anyone on this thread is being "over sensitive" As many have mentioned in this thread numerous times, when it becomes harassment you have to REPORT. Have you done that? Yes Good. It is actually illegal for men to randomly try to chat up women, let alone girls. What? How is this possible? So you're saying that expats who hook up in bars are breaking the law? People who don't know each other aren't allowed to talk to the opposite s3x? That the many relationships that form here based on meeting at parties/brunches/the office etc are actually borne from illegal activity?! That ... is unbelievable. . edited by LadyBee on 23/06/2014 It's not allowed to approach a random woman you don't know on the streets trying to chat her up. And I am sure that counts for under age girls in the pool. Clubs, offices and other socializing events would be a different situation. I see. Re the underage thing ... most 14-year-olds look like twenty-somethings (to me, at any rate!) so I'm not sure how the law helps there! ;) True. This happens a lot in the USA. Teenage girls tell men that they are older so that they can have relations. After the man gets in trouble, he says that he thought that she was over 18. No matter how old he thought the girl was, the law will not be on his side.... I assume that it is the same here, although the age of consent is lower here... edited by AnonDubai on 23/06/2014 edited by AnonDubai on 23/06/2014

As I was so fed up of being chased up and down the malls, being as attractive as I am, I decided to pop out a couple of children whilst also putting on some weight. Lo and behold, problem solved. Now if someone does a double take I always check if zippers are zipped up, buttons done or that no child accidentally fell off the twin stroller unnoticed by me. Do I miss my curvy size 6 figure? When I first came here, I got bothered a lot, even on a daily basis. After I became Muslim and started wearing an abaya, I still got bothered but much less than before. Once I had children, I 100% stopped getting bothered. Men here tend to leave women with children alone because they know that they are married. A woman with child in tow also appears a lot less seductive. One thing that I remarked is that I got harassed the most when I was alone. If you go out with others, you are less likely to be harassed. I have also been harassed in the USA and in Europe but here was by far the most...
