Scared me? Abortive attempts landing in SA Burnt out planes on air strips in Nepal Emergency mountain flight out from Nepal Actually dying on a rafting trip in Nepal (miracles DO happen) Being knocked off a bike in Nepal Despite that country trying it's best to kill me? It is still the best country and almost my fav. in the world.

Year one is usually just a spelling sheet (the same 10 words per day each week) with a spelling 'test' the following Sunday. A reading book...usually get 2 a week as they master one well. And a couple of numeracy exercises. Doesnt take really any time at all.

pfft, hubby is weirdly addicted to these programmes, and I get sucked in against my will. Last night put me off entirely....the poor choices, the pocahontas routine, the school kids before the headmaster routine, and the blatant 'fiddling' with results by Simon. It's not a talent quest, it's a circus.

Depends on the school...some have a terms notice worked into your contract, in which case (if leaving without that much notice) you can apply to their board of governers for your deposit back...if you are at one of those schools that takes one, of course. You do need quite a bit of time to sort the school testimonials, and transfer certificate so a terms notice seems the norm, even without the hassle of deposits back etc.

check out guiness's place but we have friends in M 9, and i reckon it's pretty neat. You need to go look, though. What suits one family, may not suit another. And there's giant pylons along the back of some 9 villas and that would put me off if close to those...the rest are lovely.

We havent had anyone ask for a trick, but a joke, a song, maybe if you do get asked? And on the subject of scary dads, I was worried last year as hubby was way freaky and entertained himself hugely with scaring the life out of the older kids, (who, once word got round were lining up at our door in droves) but he always checked the peep hole and if it was smallies and in particular little fairy princesses he toned it way down. Well, as far as he could given his costume and make up :)

you could do that...you could play stroppy madam with the agency, and insist that she has to come at 2 as any other time just doesnt work for you?

I *think* their legal working hours are 10 hours daily, 6 days a week. You may well get her in trouble if you mention to the agency the hours worked as they will then know that she has called you to complain, and it might make life difficult for her.

I think PJ means redundancy doesn't exist as in there is no such thing within the labour law - not that it doesn't happen. As far as I'm aware employers don't have the option to make an employee redundant so it comes under arbitrary dismissal, if that makes sense. I get it, but tell that to the thousands made redundant...it's only a word, and then theres the law. Just sticks in my craw is all.

As a HR manager who has had to release well over 400 people over the past 4 years. With people threatening suicide no it ****** well hasn't passed me by. In the UAE there is no recognition for redundancy. It is arbitrary dismissal. right.....

Sorry to hear that you have been let go. It sucks! Redundancy doesn't exist here so you have been arbitrarily dismissed. In these circumstances if you have been employed for over a year you are entitled to all gratuity at 21 days per year and a minimum of 30 days notice. If you took the company to court they may grant you up to 3 months pay. You are in a good position to negotiate and ask for more than the month They should also pay any outstanding leave up to the end of your notice period and also a repatriation flight if you don't have another position to go to. Hope it all works out x Redundancy doesnt exist here? I beg pardon? You obviously let the last 4 years go by un noticed...

Mom of twins....I agree with just about everything you say...except. (theres always an except, hey?) I do not believe at all with talking about when the child goes home...we are HERE, this is our HOME. Where we are, is where we belong...letting the kids fantasize about what their rooms will be like at home seems cruel....let them have the rooms of their dreams, if neccesary, here. Well we ARE going back home and they will have their old rooms back (revamped as they like..). Just different situation for us. Besides, they already have the rooms they wanted here as well....I don't see why they can't have fond memories of home and look forward to going back... edited by MomOfTwins on 16/10/2011 Sure, it can be a different situation... I guess I just like the idea of our small people enjoying where they are...not forever looking forward to something (in the case of relocation home...years in advance...), or looking back at it either. A fond memory is one thing, a longing for a certain unatainable something is quite another. edited by arohadxb on 16/10/2011

Someone recently told me that they had a two months' notice clause put into their housing contract, so that if their job circumstances changed, they would be able to leave before the year was up. I don't know where that would leave them with the money paid in advance, though. wanna know something funny? LL came back to us and said...oh, but we didnt read the contract right! Thats not what it's supposed to say.....lol! Thats him stimmied :D

Did you know: New Zealand has never lost a Rugby world cup tournament against Australia when playing at Eden Park :):):) We are very hopeful here :):):) Pretty sure the ozies havent actually played a RWC game against the AB's at Eden park...so technically true that they've not actually wone one ;)

I wonder what the response would actually be....I once spoke to the police at the airport about men taking surreptitious photos of various women and they said there was nothing they could do as it is not illegal to take photos of other people! To say I was shocked is putting it mildly. Perhaps if it were local women they would have acted differently. Perhaps if they hadn't been eating their McDonalds breakfast , ditto. Perhaps a different policeman might have acted differently. Perhaps because it is children...who knows.... That's totally amazing for the police to tell you its not illegal because it is absolutely illegal in the UAE to take photos of anyone without their knowledge or permission. You had every right to complain. or maybe it was because it was airside as well and certain laws of the land don't apply? Could be, that would explain their attitude. Would have thought same rules apply even airside, what about if someone photographed local ladies in that area - the police would do nothing :\: I would say if it was local ladies, there may well have been a different reaction, sadly.

Our school actually specifies homemade. I make cakes because am lazy, though one term I made sweets...which took all day plus some. The committee tends to sort it all into groups so there is a price range of stuff to buy...individual cup cakes through to whole cakes, so everyone from the littlest budget through to mum browsing has an option.

I'm half way through chemo for breast cancer, i have surgery and radiotherapy to come. I never made it back to Dubai after my summer holiday, I'm in rented accommodation with none of my personal belongings yet other than the suitcsse I brought for my vacation. BUT i value every day more than ever, it doesn't matter to me where I am in the world as long as i'm with DH and my 2 precious little ones - they make me smile, laugh and give me joy every day. We make opportunities wherever we are in life, change can be good even it doesn't feel like it in the short term. Stay positive :o) And this is the post that makes me realise all my petty heartaches are just so much dust. I will light my candle tonight for you scribs and for the likes of Darcy...women who embody hope, beauty, strength and patience....thank you for sharing.

But how far back do you go if appearance isnt a thing? (and quite frankly, I'd smack someone if I was asian in appearance and said I came from england or wherever and they questioned it!) We're first ship settlers to NZ...Scottish both sides, one side minor (lowland) aristocracy (VERY minor if they went to NZ voluntarily, lol!) the other side (highland) had to do a runner from a certain king and took to the tea clippers, before hitting NZ and marrying a Norwegian settler. I have been to our 'roots' and am proud of that, and love learning about it...even in a relatively new country like NZ, we're all proud of where we came from and what we have acheived. But. We've been there since the dawn of western time on that wee island in the pacific and I think what sets us apart is: we are right to the very soul of ourselves, kiwis.

My daughter (6 years old) can write you an essay on this if you like? There are things we need...air, shelter, food, clothing, (and a few toiletry neccessities as she is a bit of a princess), the rest are wants. I can want lots of things, so can she, but we just try to instill the practise of working towards all our wants....they are not ours by right, or just because we 'can' afford them. Where we have no problem saying 'yes': is to experiences, whether they cost or not, that is what will truely enrich our lives. And we have no problem saying a resounding 'no' to sweets in the check out asile and rubbish plastic toys. I will however ensure her art and craft stuff is always fully loaded. And as a family a common weakness is books, so now we have a collective journey to the book shop to buy our books before each trip we make. This instills (we hope!) the idea that the books are not a given, but something to be treasured, looked forward to, enjoyed, and looked after. Lil miss is doing a training run/cycle thing with her school next week and gathering sponsers for donations to a school in Ajman...she is well aware that her comfortable home/bed/tv/dinner/school etc etc is not something all children are born into. I guess (and I am a parent who parents by the seat of her pants most of the time) that saying 'no' which we/I tend to do non stop most days is effective when the kids get to an age when you can explain the reasoning behind your no. We don't get that because it's not a need, it will fall to bits, is bad for you, etc..so I don't feel bad about the 'no's just the repetitiveness of it! I do like saying yes though, now that she very occasionaly gets the whole point of it.

If you are going to Khatmandu valley...make sure you head UP the hills and out of the smog/pollution I would recommend going to Pokara, you can get a wee flight from the city as the bus would take too long for a short break. Lots of lovely hikes either day trips of 4 day treks out from there and it's a beautiful spot.

Go to your list of friends by going to your profile and clicking on 'friends' above where the list is on the left. It will bring up a full page list and to the right of each person's name isa box which says 'Friends' and a tick. Hover over the box and it brings up a list - at the bottom of the list is 'Unfriend'. thanks
